Feast of Italian Year 9 Italian students were treated to a culinary experience to remember at Fremantle’s own La Sosta restaurant as part of their language studies. The boys were joined by Miss De Palma, Mrs Emslie and Mrs Romagnoli for a four course meal, practising their language skills with Head Chef Matteo and showing their appreciation for the traditional fare of the town of Amatrice in central Italy, which suffered a devastating earthquake in August. With proceeds of the pasta dishes assisting in recovery efforts at the earthquake site, the lovers of Italian were happy to devour authentic lasagne al forno and spaghetti all-amatriciana, complemented with Pizza Bianca straight from the wood fire oven and delicious homemade strawberry gelato. The La Sosta experience proved to be an amazing opportunity for the boys to employ their language skills in a practical and enjoyable way.
Jonah raises money for diabetes research CBC Year 10 student Jonah Marsh was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just over 18 months ago. Since then the 15 year old has been trying to raise awareness about both type 1 diabetes and JDRF, which is the world’s leading not-for-profit supporter of Type 1 diabetes research. Jonah is participating in the JDRF walk, which brings together around a million people to raise funds for life-changing T1D research. Old V What CBC boys say about CBC Fremantle... More than 100 CBC Old Boys and their wives attended the Over 60s’ Morning Tea in the College Staffroom. Sponsored by Old Boy John Hughes (Class of 1952), the annual event attracted alumni from the Classes of 1939 to 1972 and is a highlight of the Old Boys’ calendar.
Philip Gianquinta Class of 1946
Richard Woodgate Class of 1955
Frank Legana Class of 1965
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? I didn’t know what to do with myself. I finished up working for 12 months in Perth and then I left and went to work for CBH, the big wheat people, and ended up working there for 40 years.
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? I sat the Junior Certificate. I got third division and I worked in the Australian Auditor’s office.
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? I went overseas for 12 months – being of Italian origin I spent 12 months in London and Europe then came back and went into the logistics business.
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Br O’Connor. He was a thorough gentleman. What is your fondest memory of CBC? Probably the people; we played a lot of sport. I played football in the 1st XVIII. My favourite teacher was Br Devlin. He used to give me the strap and make a joke out of it. He was a lovely man. Page 10 | CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 9 Term 3
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Br Quilligan then Brother Collopy, I think. It’s going back a while! What is your fondest memory of CBC? Sport and the comradeship. It wasn’t a big school then.
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Br A Kelly – he was a great man. What is your fondest memory of CBC? The interaction with the Brothers was really positive. They were great leaders and looked after the boys. And the sport; I loved the sport.
Philip Taranto Class of 1966
John Plummer Class of 1967
Frank Ferrero Class of 1972
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? Funnily enough George Ayres came around and got me a job at the AMP.
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? I worked in the wool stores.
What did you do immediately after leaving CBC? Went to WAIT to do a commerce degree. I’m a certified financial planner.
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Br Marshall. What is your fondest memory of CBC? I think possibly the calibre of the teachers at the time. There was a fair emount of discipline, which oddly enough I enjoyed as I probably needed it at the time. I enjoyed sporting activities, and the people who were in the school.
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Oh I remember that – Br Marshall. I used to get into trouble. What is your fondest memory of CBC? Just the lads and the teachers.
Who was the Headmaster when you were here? Brs St John and Drake. What is your fondest memory of CBC? I haven’t stepped back here for 45 years. What’s my favourite memory? Comaraderie of the boys. How we used to try and prank, as kids do. And the focus on Sport; that was a strong influence.

Black Dog on a Lead On Sunday 16 October join the Black Dog on a Lead walk, raising money for Headspace while getting people to talk openly about depression or ‘the black dog’ within our community. Almost half (45.5%) of the total population experience a mental health disorder at some point in their life and although you may be one of the lucky ones, there is a good chance that someone you LOVE, is or will be effected. In Australia, eight lives are lost every day as a result of suicide and it is the number one cause of deaths for Australians aged 15 to 44. Indigenous communities are up to eight times more likely to take their own life than non-Indigenous Australians and we currently have the highest rate of suicide in the world for young Indigenous males. We are ALL in this together and no one should have to suffer in silence. To register for the walk click the link www.mycause.com.au/events/blackdogonalead. Alternately if you’d like to avoid the walking bit and still support Headspace you can donate by sponsoring Mrs Petrina Brewer at the following link: www.mycause.com.au/page/134220/black-dog-on-a-lead-petrina-richmond.
