From the Principal Aboriginal Reconciliation

Some readers may remember a speech

The establishment and maintenance

delivered in 1992 in the Sydney inner-

of a strong culture and set of beliefs is essential to the effective functioning of a good school. At CBC Fremantle we seek fairness and equity for each member of our community and the promotion of these same qualities in wider society. Mr Burgio wrote very eloquently about equity in the last newsletter and I hope this is a principle which is clearly understood and embraced CBC Fremantle

by everyone who is part of this College.

city suburb of Redfern by the Australian Prime Minister of the time, Paul Keating. Occurring shortly after the Mabo decision in the High Court and the establishment of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, this speech was a turning point in how Australia recognised and acknowledged its history. It called for an understanding that this country had a record of human occupancy and culture which extended back for 50,000 years and not the 200 which had commonly been the focus of teaching and understanding to that point. It also paved the way for the formal apology to Indigenous Australians for past government practices, which was delivered by Kevin Rudd some 15 years later.

Most importantly, Mr Keating encouraged all non-Indigenous Australians to consider the question of justice from the perspective of our Indigenous brothers and sisters. He said: It might help us if we non-Aboriginal Australians imagined ourselves dispossessed of land we had lived on for 50,000 years - and then imagined ourselves told that it had never been ours. Imagine if ours was the oldest culture in the world and we were told that it was worthless. Imagine if we had resisted this settlement, suffered and died in the defence of our land, and then were told in history books that we had given up without a fight. Imagine if non-Aboriginal Australians had served
