What is your operation like and your farming background?
The dream was always to get back to the farm and the way we started it was doing custom feedings and confinement hogs. That gave us enough money to eventually buy some ground and buy some hogs. We farm 1,500 acres and 20,000 hog spaces with a few helpers from hired hands and my boys.
We got involved with C & B through Ethan Voss, service manager over in Sibley, IA. He helped get us back up and running with our IH machines and now with the relationship there we have transitioned over to John Deere machines.
We live on great-grandpa’s place and we are the fourth generation on this particular farm.
What do you love the most about farming?
Just being outdoors and being your own boss. Watching the miracles every spring. It never ceases to amaze me. You plant that seed, and it becomes a plant. Some years, that’s your paycheck. It’s an admirable, fun lifestyle. This is about the legacy that you can leave behind. You take your grandkids in a tractor, and you hope they want to take over for you one day. You invest a lot of money. You invest in the equipment and let God do the rest.
What do you wish people knew about being a producer?
The enormous challenges of keeping everything going. You wear so many hats. Basically, you’re a veterinarian, an electrician, a banker and a marketing expert. It’s a very emotionally draining business, there’s a lot of stress that goes along with being a farmer. People look at it and think it’s very simple. There’s a lot of stress people don’t see from the road.
What are your biggest challenges as a producer?
Weather and markets are probably your biggest mental challenge. We can do the physical challenges and the John Deere equipment makes it easy these days to do the rest.
Do you have any advice for young farmers?
Never give up. Some years you don’t know quite why you are doing this. My advice is everyone always says it’s not going to work or it’s impossible but do what your heart leads you. There were times I worked three jobs to pay for this place. You have to have a cast iron heart. If you commit to it for a lifetime, you will succeed. Sacrifices may need to be made. You might not get a new car and might have to skip that concert. If it’s every waking thought, you’ll succeed.
How does the equipment you run impact your operation?
It makes it so much easier these days with the automation on these tractors and combines. The mental stress is so much better. The machine drives for you, runs for you, turns your planter on and off. Now when I’m planting, I’m doing a lot of back window watching to watch the digging and the planting. It allows you to focus on what you’re trying to accomplish and to put in bigger days, accomplish more with less manpower.
