IDA GROVE — For Ida and surrounding county farmers, this past harvest was completed faster than most years. A dry summer didn’t relent much in the fall.
“It’s been a weird harvest,” said Adam Lansink, service manager for C & B Implement in Ida Grove. “We only had one rainy day that affected our service schedule.”
Lansink, 41, has been an employee at C & B since March of 2013.
Adam Dirksen, C & B Implement’s parts manager, agrees about the strangeness of this year’s harvest.
“We were very busy in the parts area since mid to late September,” stated Dirksen. “We closed early on one rainy day but, even then, a part of our coverage area kept rolling without much rain at all.”
Dirksen, 37, has been an employee at C & B since May of 2013.
Both Adams started in the parts department when it was Hultgren Implement and then Noteboom, and now fill their service roles for C & B. Both also have family farming backgrounds that include livestock and row crops. And both, along with their total staff of 13, have a strong commitment to supporting the farmers in their region. One of the few things that seems to set them apart is their last names.
“From my start, I enjoyed helping customers get the parts they need. I applied for parts manager, because we have a long history of excellent parts support,” said Dirksen who has led the department since 2017. “I also like working with the people in this building. Sure, like any job, it can be challenging, but it’s fulfilling to know we’re doing the best we can to get the right parts into our customers’ hands as quickly as possible.”
Collectively, Dirksen’s four parts employees have 73 years of parts-support experience.
C & B utilizes a regional inventory manager but relies on Dirksen to stay in touch with his local customers’ needs.
“We stock over $1 million in inventory just to make sure we have what a customer needs when they need it,” said Dirksen. “If we don’t have a part, we pride ourselves with our ability to get it through the manufacturer or another of our 38 stores.
“Having said that, we have material supply issues like most industries these days. Fuel, oil, and air filters have been a problem at times, as well as a simple radiator cap for the 4440s. Luckily, some availability issues are slowly improving.” Dirksen said, at the height of the supply chain problem, dealers had to be “stingy” with their inventory when it came to sharing with each other.
C & B is a John Deere dealer and is heavily involved with material handling equipment such as forklifts, dollies, and jacks; they also own also own C & B Powersports in Spirit Lake. It’s a diversification that has necessitated a workforce skilled in all modes of service work.
“Years ago, our service department was segmented,” said Lansink, who began managing the implement’s service department in 2017. “Our customers have a variety of needs, and it doesn’t make sense for an employee to have just one area of expertise. There just wouldn’t be enough of us to go around.”
Lansink has nine service people who have 124 years of collective experience. Eight of the nine service employees are full-time, and one is a student technician.
“Hands-on experience is very important to us,” said Lansink. “We have an apprentice program. We expect people to make mistakes, but we also expect them to learn from those mistakes. We really don’t have a slow time; we always have combines, balers, tractors, and tillage pieces in the shop.
“We always practice service to the best of our ability. We employ people who have gone to school for diesel mechanics, but we take that background and give it focus. We have in-house training — our ‘Road to Success’ program — which includes online and in person training. We send our techs to John Deere schools in Davenport, Iowa, and Eagan, Minnesota, as well as to our C & B specific training in Mitchell, South Dakota. Our service people are expected to keep learning.”
With harvest in the rear-view mirror, Dirksen and Lansink eye improvements in their workplace.
“Our employees are always thinking, always trying to make things better,” said Dirksen. “We’re fortunate to work for a company that values its employees and its customers.”
“None of us are just numbers — not our customers, not us,” said Lansink. “Our company — even at the top — employs down-to-earth people who want to serve farmers the best they can through the development of great employees.”

Estes tested these setups last year and were blown away by the performance so they decided to offer it as a package. It has quickly become a best seller. You will literally be lapping guys with OEM systems with cleaner tanks, less damage and with less loss.
For 2022, Estes has “beefed” up the Xtreme Separation grate to insure it can take the worst of conditions and punishment. In testing its limits, they loaded the combine so much that the OEM grates snapped in half going through the chopper. However, our grates were untouched and still firmly in the machine.

When you say ALL CROPS, do you really mean ALL CROPS?
The XPR 2 bars are now case hardened for maximum wear. The life expectancy is 3-5x greater (depending on crops harvested) than a non-case hardened bar.

Part No. JDXPR2X1-K
Yes. There hasn’t been a crop Estes hasn’t been able to thresh or separate with the XPR 2 system; And with more performance than an OEM setup. Whether its the hardest threshing wheat or wet rice, the XPR 2 outperforms all others. Some of the crops our customers have harvested: corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, milo, oats, canola, popcorn, flax, millet, bluegrass, radish, pinto beans, edible beans, field peas, hemp, chickpeas, lentils, mustard, rye, rice, sesame, sunflowers, among others.
Is the only difference between XPR 2, XPR 2+ and XPR 2+ Max, the # of Xtreme Separation Grates?
Yes, that is correct. The threshing concaves and cover plates are the same for XPR 2, XPR 2+ and the XPR 2+ Max. The only difference is number of grates.
Considering upgrading to an X9, how much capacity does a S790 with the XPR 2+ Max System have?
The performance of the S790 with XPR 2+ Max system is extremely impressive and close to the performance of an X9 for a much, much smaller price tag. It’s highly recommend you consider this setup as an option, its an unbeatable ROI.
What is the most popular setup?
XPR 2+ is the most popular. It’s only recommend the XPR 2+ Max if you are running a Class 8 or Class 9 machine, as you will run out of horsepower before you run out of capacity with that setup.
Is the XPR 2+ still recommended for STS machines?
Yes, the extra Xtreme Separation Grate allows you run the machine at max capacity often with no rotor loss.

We all know this guy, you know, the one guy who is well known for his wicked sneezes. Sneezes that spray across the room. That’s bad, but not as bad as those sprayer tips that don’t give your equipment the spray it needs to get the job done.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) developed the ASABE S572.1 standard to measure and interpret spray quality from nozzles. The ASABE S572.1 standard uses eight droplet classification categories, six of which are common for agriculture and horticulture: Very Fine, Fine, Medium, Coarse, Very Coarse and Extremely Coarse. Most agrochemical applications recommend a fine, medium, or coarse spray.

The Copperhead Furrow Cruiser® finally solved the SIDEWALL COMPACTION problem that came with the development of the double disk opening system on modern planters. The “V” created by the opening system on planters causes a compaction zone that is necessary to get the seed down to planting depth. The problem with this is that current stock rubber tires and cast press wheels cannot consistently crumble and firm this soil back around the seed. Not included with 8% off sale.
