Labeling the Click-to-Run Virtual Drive v1.0 April 19, 2010
Summary Microsoft Office Starter 2010 will be preinstalled on OEM machines, and uses the new Click-to-Run (C2R) technology to host the Office Starter files in a virtualized application space. This restricted space is mapped to a drive which cannot be access by the user, but is visible in Windows Explorer. To help communicate to the user that this drive is not accessible, Microsoft provides OEMs with the ability to label this drive with a more descriptive localized label.

Introduction Microsoft Office Starter 2010 will be pre-loaded on OEM machines, and uses the new Click-to-Run(C2R) technology to host the Office Starter files in a virtualized application space. This restricted space is mapped to a drive (Q:) which cannot be accessed by the user. To help communicate to the user that the Q: drive is not accessible, Microsoft provides OEMs with the ability to label this drive with a more descriptive localized label.
Technical details Click-to-Run (C2R) is using Microsoft virtualization technology to run Office Starter 2010 in an isolated environment. The contents of the virtual file system are exposed through a drive. By default, only programs running inside of the virtual environment will get access to the contents of the drive. Drive access by the user is blocked and attempts to access the drive results in a denial error: “Access is denied”. OEM’s should use a Registry Key to add a label to this drive letter, so that end-users know that this drive is part of the Microsoft Office Starter 2010 implementation.
List of approved localized labels Below is the approved list of labels. These labels are descriptive. OEMs should therefore use the label that matches the user selected preferred OS user interface language. The non-descriptive label “Microsoft Office 2010” should be used in case an OS UI language has no matching label. Language

How to create the registry key that adds the label to the Q drive To apply the appropriate label to the Q: drive, a registry key must be set. OEMs can create this key manually for non-MUI images and may develop their own solution to ensure that the appropriate label is applied for MUI OS images that permit the the end-user to make the UI language selection in OOBE. Alternatively OEMs may use a Microsoft developed tool shared under the Microsoft Public License (MsPL) at http://labelc2rdrive.codeplex.com which fully automates this process for MUI and non-MUI images. Two suggestions how to add the label are described below: Suggestion 1: Manual steps: 1. While in system audit mode on the target system open regedit. 2. Using regedit add the following keys to the registry: Note: Replace “Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (Protected) with the label matching the OS UI language. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\Q\DefaultLabel Name=null value, Type=REG_SZ, Value=Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (Protected)
On a system pre-loaded with Windows Vista SP1 64bit or later the following additional registry needs to be added to ensure that the label is displayed in 32bit programs. This is not necessary on Windows 7 64bit as changes in WOW64 were made in that version. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\Q\Defau ltLabel Name=null value, Type=REG_SZ, Value=Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (Protected)
Suggestion 2: Using the tool provided at http://labelc2rdrive.codeplex.com: 1. Download the tool from http://labelc2rdrive.codeplex.com. Note that Microsoft provides both the binary (recommended) and the source code (in case OEMs want to modify/enhance the functionality) licensed under the terms of the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL). 2. While in system audit mode on the target system extract the files from the downloaded .zip-file to c:\windows\setup\scripts\ . Please note that this directory does not exist by default and needs to be created.
3. The machine is now ready to be syspreped. Technical details: SetupComplete.cmd gets launched automatically and with elevated rights after the OOBE phase of the Microsoft Windows setup is complete. SetupComplete.cmd will launch the labelc2rdrive.exe tool which detects the preferred system UI language and sets the correct matching label. There is no output visible to the end-user during the OS OOBE and the complete process takes less than 1 second.
Questions and answers Q: What happens if the label registry key is set and the user never installs Microsoft Office 2010 Starter? A: The drive label would not be visible to the end end-user. Q: What if the end-user is using Q: for something else (network share, USB drive)? Would it get the label? A: It depends. Mapped network shares and removeable drives (like USB drives) would not get the label, but fixed disks with the Q: drive letter assigned would. Q: What can end-user do in case the label gets applied to fixed disk? A: User can simply right-click on the drive in the Windows Explorer and select “Rename to change or remove the drive label.
