Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 11 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s Lasallian Catholic college preparatory mission. Before joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance, a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco New Orleans. In the 2018–19 school year, the board welcomed a new member, Donald Fitzgerald. David Walrath serves in the role of chair and Steve Mahaney ’69 is the vice chair. The Policy Governance model comprises an inclusive, written set of goals for the school, called Ends Policies, which guide the board in monitoring the performance of the school through the President/CEO. Ends Policies help ensure that Christian Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the District of San Francisco New Orleans. “Thank you for being part of the Christian Brothers community. The Board welcomes you to the new school year. I am humbled by the passion and commitment in those who educate and help our students grow,” says Chair David Walrath. “While we have great academic programs, CB is also committed to excellent co-curricular activities for our students to become complete individuals embracing the Lasallian Core Principles.” “As Chair, I would like to thank every Trustee for their continued dedication to the Lasallian Catholic mission and goals set by the founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle.”

Connection is a publication of Christian Brothers High School. The purpose of the magazine is to strengthen the connection between the school and alumni, parents and friends; to cultivate community support for assisting CB in its operation and advancement; and to recognize and thank supporters. Message From the President Fall 2018 “I have received, my God, so many blessings from your infinite goodness that I would have to be very ungrateful if I failed to express to you my very humble gratitude. I owe you everything that I am.” —St. John Baptist de La Salle Dear Alumni, Families and Friends: As I sit at my desk writing this letter, I too am humbled and grateful to God for the many gifts He has bestowed upon our school community. Foremost on my mind today, is the gift of our Lasallian Catholic charism. This coming spring marks 300 years since the passing of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. De La Salle transformed education by forming a community of educators with whom he developed a spirituality of teaching and learning that centers on Catholic faith and personal relationships. While emphasizing each student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development, De La Salle recognized that in order to reach students, a teacher must begin by reaching hearts. This legacy continues today with Brothers and Lay Partners educating nearly 1 million students in 80 countries. Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento is blessed to be a part of this incredible mission and thankful that, in our 143rd year, CB is thriving as the largest Catholic high school in the region with students joining us from 72 zip codes and four foreign countries. The academic programs have never been better as evidenced by five consecutive years on the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” While many schools boast exclusivity, Christian Brothers focuses on building an inclusive community. A 2018 list from “Niche Rankings” identifies the Most Diverse Private High Schools in America. According to “Niche,” CB ranks number one locally and in the top two percent nationally based on ethnic, economic and cultural diversity statistics and opinions from both students and parents. “Niche” describes a high ranking as an indication “that the school is extremely diverse and fosters a community that accepts and promotes a diversity of viewpoints, backgrounds, religious beliefs, etc. We are grateful to the parents and guardians who entrust us with the hearts and minds of their children. We are also grateful to the alumni, families, businesses and friends who give so generously to ensure that we continue to thrive into our 143rd year and beyond. This issue of Connection includes an Annual Report of Gifts (see page 18) to recognize donations given between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. Every name represents a vital partner in our efforts.

“We are grateful to the parents and guardians who entrust us with the hearts and minds of their children. We are also grateful to the alumni, families, businesses and friends who give so generously to ensure that we continue to thrive into our 143rd year and beyond.”

Please know that we are careful stewards of your gifts and continue in our commitment to fiscal responsibility while maintaining the tradition of the excellent, value-centered learning at the heart of a Christian Brothers education. Live Jesus in our hearts!

A LOOK INTO THE ARTS

CB is the place to be an artist Media, visual and performing arts are essential components of a well-rounded education at Christian Brothers. Currently, 600 students, more than half of the student body, participate in the arts. Students can take classes in choir, band, KBFT, The Talon, theatre and visual arts. Theatre productions, Open Mic nights and student-led choirs, De La Femme and De La Dudes, are open to all students. Whether a student is an experienced artist or novice, there is a place for everyone.

CB Takes Home Five Elly Awards! It was a year of spectacular productions by the Christian Brothers theatre program as evidenced by a total of 17 Elly Award nominations for the fall production, “Hamlet,” and the spring musical, “State Fair.” “Hamlet” earned eight nominations and “State Fair” earned nine. Each year, members of the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance attend and judge more than 70 high school theatre productions at more than 30 schools in the region. The Elly Awards recognize exemplary artistic achievements in local and community theatre and are appropriately named after the late Eleanor McClatchy, a devoted patron of the arts. This year’s Elly Awards Ceremony was held on September 9. Months of hard work paid

off as Christian Brothers took home five awards, continuing CB’s tradition of excellence as the most awarded theatre program in the Sacramento region. Just in the past four years, CB has earned an astonishing 67 Elly nominations and 21 wins. “I’ve enjoyed being back at my alma mater, where my interest for technical theatre began,” says theatre arts teacher and technical director for the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center Heather Christianson ’01. “It has been a joy working with such talented students and seeing them bloom as artists. We are also fortunate to have performing arts teacher, Michael D. Jackson, on board for the expertise he brings to the stage.”

CB alumni recall how the theatre program helped beyond the classroom and led them to be where they are now: “CB absolutely prepared me to succeed in the classroom. The theatre arts program fostered my love of performing and really instilled in me the confidence to follow my dreams,” said Allison Lian ’14, NYU Tisch School of the Arts ’18, who is currently performing on the national tour of “Finding Neverland.” “I was fortunate to be a part of the Christian Brothers theatre program. As a freshman, I could not have imagined the incredible opportunities that were ahead. It was such a joy to bring a diverse array of characters to life, from Harpo Marx to Hamlet. Not only did I have the privilege of working with exceptional leaders; I also worked and made memories alongside my very talented friends. My time at CB has been so full of joy and love

CB Visual Arts Students Beautify Sacramento program offers them choices and a path to grow into the artists they hope to be. Teaching visual arts at CB is truly my dream job.”

CB offers a four-year visual art program that includes a rich variety of courses for all artistic levels, ranging from Introduction to Art and Ceramics to Painting and Drawing. Students have the opportunity to grow as artists and choose their creative path as upper division students. “I feel incredibly blessed to work with such intrinsically motivated, hard-working, skilled and talented students,” enthuses fine arts teacher Christine Kerr. “No matter what medium or challenge I throw at them, they always dive in and blow my mind. They are an inspiration to me and to each other. I couldn’t possibly ask for better students. I love that our

The student artwork gets displayed in various ways both at CB and out in the community. The students design the school’s annual Easter and Christmas cards as well as poster advertisements for theatre productions. They enjoy presenting and promoting their work at CB and local art shows, including the annual La Salle Art Exhibit, High School Self-Portrait Show, B Street Theatre Art Show and the student-led Courage Art Show. This past summer, the California State Fair visual art displays were full of artwork created by CB’s artistic students.

Christian Bohm Returns to Lead CB Choirs It’s not often someone leaves a job to return 18 years later. Christian Brothers welcomed back Mr. Christian Bohm as the Choral Director. Bohm formerly taught at CB from 1995 to 2000, running the entire performing arts program — teaching choir, acting classes, orchestra, jazz band and directing the fall play and spring musical. Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco, a fellow Lasallian school, invited him to become a music teacher to assist in improving their music program. After 18 successful years in San Francisco, Bohm felt a calling to return to Sacramento and the Christian Brothers community. “I came back because my family is here, my home is here,” explains Bohm. “And I love Christian Brothers, it’s always been my home.”

The California State Fair wasn’t the only place CB art was showcased. Abandoned for half a decade, the former Mansion Inn was used as a place for local high school students to create artwork, known as the “Tearing Walls ApART” initiative. The name of the event comes from the student participation in this immersive art exhibit before the hotel gets torn down and turned into a new one. Visual arts student, Ryan Lee ’19, collaborated with McClatchy High School student, Adrian Lau, on an entryway mural at the “Tearing Walls ApART” event on September 23.

The students are happy to have Mr. Bohm back on campus. “My experience in choir this year has been an amazing journey,” says Melenaite Fetuu ’19, a member of the school’s Concert Choir. “Mr. Bohm has helped me challenge myself in how I sing and to succeed in those challenges. I definitely would love to continue my music career in college or at least still have it be a part of my life in the future.” Motivated to once again grow a program, Bohm is strategically doing outreach and promoting at the grammar school level. He is also organizing summer camps for grammar school children, making plans to increase the choir’s presence in the CB community so more people will see and hear them perform. “There is so much talent on this campus,” enthuses Bohm. “I’m excited about the future of the choral program and the opportunities we have to share our love of singing. I’m blown away by the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center and CB’s commitment to the arts.” With the return of Mr. Bohm, the Christian Brothers choral program is looking sharp for the new school year.

“From the short time Mr. Bohm has been here, choir has been a highlight in my school day. He makes choir fun and exciting. He is such a role model in my life with the way he carries himself and how he teaches us. I will pursue choir in college, thanks to the excellent experience that Mr. Bohm has given me in the past three months.” CARMEN SINGER ’19, MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL’S CONCERT CHOIR

the experience I gained as part of KBFT, I entered CSU Fullerton’s cinema and television arts program well ahead of my peers and solidly prepared for success,” says Trevor Rappleye ’08, founder and CEO at EventFilming and CorporateFilming — a nationally ranked video marketing firm recently named among the top three in Los Angeles. “Mr. Hogan gave me the skills and freedom to find my professional calling and I’m grateful to CB for investing in such an important program.” KBFT is now more than a television station, broadening the scope to sports broadcasting. Director of KBFT and Media, Visual and Performing Arts department chair, Brendan Hogan ’95, teamed up with fellow Media, Visual and Performing Arts and English teacher, Dave Anderson ’07, to expand their offerings, adding a sports broadcasting class. On their third season now, students write articles focused on CB sports and provide recaps, sideline interviews, and colorful play-by-play commentary for live broadcasts. These students truly know how to bring viewers and listeners into the game. KBFT broadcasts are available for public viewing at YouTube.com/KBFT.

Instrumental Music to Your Ears CB offers a four-year instrumental arts program that includes several talented groups, including Beginning, Concert, Jazz, String, Honors, and Jam Band, which plays at football and basketball games with school spirit. Every year, the amazing CB student musicians put on an Instrumental Christmas Concert in the fall and a Spring Instrumental Concert. Several times a year, students enjoy performing out in the community at elementary and middle schools, hospitals, assisted living facilities and events as well as providing music for the spring musical production. Students also get to experience college life by going on local college and university tours playing at places like UC Davis. The instrumental students feel they belong in a community and speak highly of Mr. Travis Maslen, band director and performing arts teacher: “I have developed a lot as a musician,” says Asher Bloom ’20, a member of the school’s Honors Band and Drumline leader. “I began playing drums when I was eight years old but, I really learned to read music my freshman year with Mr. Maslen. He does a really good job of teaching new instruments.” “The CB Band is really a family,” explains Hallie Mikacich ’19, a member of the four-year band program in Honors Band and enthusiastic performer in the school’s Jam Band. “Mr. Maslen is so much fun and at the same time, he really helps us learn music, challenging us with music theory, major and minor scales. I

really hope to continue with music in college, hopefully as part of a marching band.” “I’m definitely going to continue with music in college,” says Northwest Christian Universitybound Katherine Williams ’19. “Mr. Maslen has been a wonderful teacher. He’s so smart and well-educated. I’ve loved performing on the stage with the band and in the pit as part of the school’s musical productions. I’ve grown so much as a musician and look forward to performing as part of the worship team in college next year.” “Music is a huge part of my life,” says Argain Sanchez ’19. “Mr. Maslen has really helped and challenged me to grow. I look forward to band class every day and I’m excited to be in the pit for “Singin’ in the Rain.” It’s definitely a whole new experience to be part of a live production, knowing that the actors are really depending on us.”

Here at Christian Brothers, the arts go beyond the classroom. We are incredibly proud of our talented students and hard-working faculty who help make CB the place to be for media, visual and performing arts. “The arts enrich the lives of our students,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “In a time where art programs are being cut from schools, we are grateful to be in a position to provide a rich and diverse program for educating the ‘whole’ student.”

To accommodate changing school populations and new high schools in the section, the SJS goes through a realignment process every four years. Since 2014, CB has competed in the Capital Athletic League (CAL) facing off against Casa Roble, El Camino, Mira Loma, Rio Americano, and Vista del Lago. With the new realignment cycle this fall, CB will again compete at the Division III level which is comprised of five leagues: Capital Athletic League, Central California Conference, Foothill Valley League, Monticello Empire League, and the Valley Oak League. reassignments for Casa Roble and Mira Loma, the Capital Athletic League welcomes Capital Christian, Del Campo and Sacramento high schools. “The SJS has been meeting for approximately two years regarding this realignment cycle,” explains Dale Milton, CB athletic director. “As the second largest section in the state, it is quite a job to ensure that all 198 schools are placed in the appropriate divisions and that new schools can be integrated into the various conferences, ensuring competitive equity. I believe the new CAL offers us some tough competition and exciting playoff opportunities.”

2018 Lasallian Educator of the Year BRENDAN HOGAN ’95

Confusion and disbelief filled Brendan Hogan ’95 as he thought he saw his wife’s car pull into the Christian Brothers parking lot the morning of the St. La Salle Liturgy where the Lasallian Educator of the Year award would soon be announced. “There’s no way it’s me,” he thought to himself and decided it was simply someone else in a similar car. Little did he know, his wife was just one of many family members coming to surprise him as he would soon be announced as CB’s 2017–18 Lasallian Educator of the Year. An alumnus of Christian Brothers, Hogan believes his path back to CB was fate working one small step at a time. He earned his bachelor’s degree in new media studies from San Diego State University and got involved in real estate in Hawaii. He later decided he wanted to substitute teach, leading him to obtain his teaching credential soon after. At that time, his sister, Lizzie Hogan ’05, was a senior and encouraged him to teach at CB. So, he began part-time substitute teaching for various classes in 2004. During this time, he noticed KBFT, CB’s on-campus television station, had been paused as Br. Roch Dufresne, FSC, was out of the country. He approached the students and got it back up and running while simultaneously juggling his real estate endeavors in Hawaii. Shortly after, Br. Dan Morgan, FSC, asked him to return to CB to teach KBFT for a few months. Soon enough, he bought the textbook for the class, hopped on a plane back to California, read the textbook on his flight and started his new job three days later.

“Mr. Hogan doesn’t just talk to his students, he speaks with them. By engaging in a dialogue, Mr. Hogan gives a personal experience that builds rapport and helps students understand media from a new perspective.” AIDAN SMITH-FAGAN ’18

“I fell in love with teaching,” Hogan says. “I love working at CB —  I love what we do here.” During his 14 years at the school, he has been on four VENAVER service immersion trips and four Kairos retreats, coached powder puff football, volunteered to serve as co-chair for the employee portion of CB’s Securing the Future Campaign and graduated from the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies program. He is currently the Media, Visual and Performing Arts department chair and helped launch the sports broadcasting class three years ago with fellow CB teacher, Dave Anderson ’07. Under Mr. Hogan’s leadership, KBFT has earned numerous national awards, including the nation’s No. 1 student-produced news broadcast. “Every time I walk into room 608, I enter a learning environment unlike any I have ever experienced. In KBFT, Mr. Hogan teaches not just through instruction, but by leveling with his students and working with them,” recalls Aidan Smith-Fagan ’18. “Mr.

Hogan doesn’t just talk to his students, he speaks with them. By engaging in a dialogue, Mr. Hogan gives a personal experience that builds rapport and helps students understand media from a new perspective.” Dave Anderson ’07 sees Hogan as the perfect choice for the award, “Having Mr. Hogan as a teacher was an immense gift; working alongside him every day is an even greater privilege. He has touched the hearts and minds of his students and colleagues in immeasurable ways and has done so in the manner of our founder St. John Baptist de La Salle, albeit in his own, lovable ‘Hoganesque’ way.” Mr. Hogan was surprised and humbled to receive the recognition among other equally deserving candidates. He feels honored to be able to live his vocation every day at CB, “This job is wonderfully rewarding. This is not a profession — it’s a passion.”

2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

CB Ambassadors Create a Legacy Held at the beautiful Croatian American Cultural Center on October 18, the 34th annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner served as an opportunity for members of the Christian Brothers community to express their gratitude and thank those who have generously supported the school.

2

The evening began with remarks from President Lorcan Barnes and prayer with Principal Chris Orr. Following them was a lovely performance from CB’s Honors Chorale, under the direction of choral director, Christian Bohm. The students performed several pieces, including “For Good” from “Wicked” to recognize the donors’ support. This year’s special Ambassadors of the Year honoree was the CarreraJoffe Foundation for its generous and continued dedication to supporting tuition assistance.

3

CB’s relationship with the Carrera-Joffe Foundation dates back to 2003 when Mark Warren, CB’s president at the time, responded to an invitation from a new charitable foundation whose mission was to provide access to high quality education to students who come from families with limited economic means. The foundation agreed to fund one student scholarship at CB and has since added a student every year for the past 16 years. Sam Regalado ’07, the first Carrera-Joffe scholarship recipient, delivered a compelling keynote speech, talking about the impact Christian Brothers had on his life and how it has helped shape who he is today. He fondly mentioned Randall McClure, Armando Diaz ’94, and Dave Levasseur as teachers who challenged him, inspired him, and fueled his passion for science. Regalado is now fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor as he is currently pursuing two doctorates in medicine and computer science at University of Washington. “The gift of Lasallian Catholic education is transformative and lasts a lifetime. Thanks to the generosity of the Carrera-Joffe Foundation, seventeen students have directly benefited, and countless more benefited indirectly, because these young men and women became integral members of the CB community,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Further, the impact of their generosity doesn’t end on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Carrera-Joffe scholars and their classmates will take their CB education and their CB experience out with them to their college communities and the world.”

2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

Carrera-Joffe Foundation 2018 AMBASSADORS OF THE YEAR “I felt a strong need to give back,” says Margaret Carrera, when asked what first brought her to Christian Brothers High School. “I had started my own company and was blessed with success. My parents worked hard to ensure that my siblings and I were all educated. I wanted to do the same for others.” Margaret and her husband, Philip Joffe, were living in the Auburn area when they were looking for a high school. “We began looking at private schools and really liked Christian Brothers. We were so impressed with the teachers and students. Everyone was enthusiastic, and we really liked the diversity and the fact that the school is coeducational.” The first student whose tuition was paid for by the Carrera-Joffe Foundation was Samuel Regalado ’07. “When I look back on my time at Christian Brothers, it was so much more than an academic education,” says Regalado, a graduate of UC Berkeley in 2012, who is now enrolled in medical school while also pursuing his PhD in computer science at University of Washington. “What Christian Brothers provided me with, in addition to rigorous college-preparatory academics, was a building of my selfconfidence, a formation of my identity, spiritual growth, and a community of supporters and mentors. That would not have been possible without the support of the Carrera-Joffe Foundation. Their generosity has truly been life changing and opened numerous doors of opportunity to me. Their impact lives on in the work I do, and moving ahead, I hope I can pay it forward and make a meaningful impact in the community.” “When our first student is Sam, how can we go wrong?” enthuses Margaret. “Christian Brothers is the perfect fit for us. I really believe that we need to set people up to stand on their own two feet and the best way to do that is through education. And, the earlier we can reach them, the more successful they will be.” “My Christian Brothers education prepared me with rigorous courses, a heavy workload and the ability to engage in high-level problem solving,” says Nason Tarver ’18, University of the Pacific ’22. “If I could be at the Ambassadors’ Club Dinner, I would give Ms. Carrera and Mr. Joffe a big hug! Their generosity in providing me with the opportunity to attend CB has given me the foundation to be successful in life. They will forever have my most sincere gratitude.”

16 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

“I actually live in Oak Park,” says Juanita Patlan ’12, UC Davis ’18. “I grew up going to school next door at Oak Ridge where my teachers told me to make CB the goal. I would see the CB kids in their uniforms and I never imagined that it was a possibility for me. It was totally out of reach because my family was just trying to survive.” Patlan’s goal became reality when in 2008, she was offered admission and full tuition assistance. When asked about her sponsors, the Carrera-Joffe Foundation, Patlan becomes emotional. “I don’t even know how to say thank you. Thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime! You gave me hope. I found a home. I found family. I met my husband and I found my place with God. Every day was a dream and a privilege.” “Margaret and Philip’s passion for education has made it possible for Sam, Juanita, Nason and 14 other students to attend CB who would otherwise not have the opportunity,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Among them, we have computer programmers, a medical student, a student attending dental school, a computer scientist, a restaurateur, an accountant and more. To borrow from Margaret’s words, they are ‘standing on their own two feet’ and their lives are forever changed thanks to the Carrera-Joffe Foundation’s life-changing gift of education. It is my honor to congratulate them as our 2018 Ambassadors of the Year.”

2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

You are Cordially Invited to Join the Securing the Future Campaign! CB exists to provide an excellent Lasallian Catholic education that inspires and empowers young men and women while preparing them for success in college and life.

We are at $8.5 million of an $11.8 million goal.

In strategically planning for the future, school leaders worked to create a new 15-year campus master plan during the 2013–14 academic year. After consulting with community stakeholders and architectural and building professionals, the following priorities were identified: • Improved athletic facilities • Endowment growth • Improved parking The campaign is succeeding due to the work of a large team of dedicated volunteers and the generous support of our closest friends and families. To date, their efforts have resulted in gifts and pledges totaling $8.5 million toward an $11.8 million goal. The only way Christian Brothers High School can effectively implement the construction of these facilities and improvements is through the generous support of our closest friends and families. Those who believe in the values-based education that is at the heart of the Lasallian philosophy can secure its future for generations of students to come. We invite you to consider a gift! Please contact Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, at (916) 733–3647 or by email at nsmithfagan@cbhs-sacramento.org to learn more about the long-range vision of the school and the Securing the Future Campaign.

Rayne Soriano ’93 PAYING IT FORWARD As the oldest of five children, life wasn’t always easy for Rayne Soriano ‘93, whose parents sacrificed time, money and health as his father worked two jobs for 30 years to put his children through school. With the help of tuition assistance, he and his four brothers, Cary ’95, Rey ’97, Aldo ’99 and Clyve ’02, had the opportunity to attend Christian Brothers. “Coming to CB was truly a turning point in my life,” says Soriano. “The value CB gives you is not only for college but for the rest of your life.” During his time at the school, he took part in intramural sports, was involved in the yearbook club and co-founded the Halo Halo club, the first Asian and Pacific Islander club at CB. He fondly remembers taking driver’s education with Mr. Ron Limeberger ’53 and working at the bookstore with Mrs. Lee Wurschmidt. Most notably, he recalls volunteering and doing community service through Wellspring and tutoring students at Oak Ridge Elementary School next door. He grew up with a passion for helping and taking care of others and followed a calling towards health care. He went on to the University of San Francisco, earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing, so he could dedicate that caring passion to his career. Soriano found himself serving clinical and administrative functions in the emergency department after college, a job he held for ten years. He was also fond of teaching and coaching due to the positive impact that his teachers and mentors at CB and USF had on him, leading him back to school to get his master’s degree in education from Sacramento State University. From there, he co-led the implementation of electronic health records in 21 hospitals throughout northern California and was then asked to launch a Medicare Operations program serving elderly patient populations. His career in health care came full circle as he earned his PhD in nursing science and health care leadership from University of California, Davis and is now the Regional Administrator for Kaiser Permanente Northern California. In this role, he leads the effort on building programs to serve those who are homeless, elderly, suffering from mental health crises or substance abuse and other vulnerable groups get the resources they need to be safe and healthy. With that caring mentality and CB’s lasting impact on his life, he took that passion and continues to find ways to pay it forward to students today. “It’s inspiring to give back to CB because I know what the school has done for my family and me,” he states. “And for me, to give back is just a small token of my appreciation and investing in our future alumni as they go forward in their careers.”

“The value CB gives you is not only for college but for the rest of your life.” Now raising three young boys (and future Falcons) of his own with his wife, donating isn’t always easy but he remains dedicated to giving back. “Christian Brothers is grateful for the generosity of Rayne Soriano and fellow donors,” says Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement. “Monthly, recurring donations are a convenient and feasible way for donors to give. All gifts matter and contribute to a large impact for CB students.” The Soriano brothers were given the chance to attend CB thanks to the generosity of others, something that continues to inspire him today. “I’m a strong believer in investing in the right people who have dreams of giving back. Our society needs that more than ever,” says Soriano. With his help, Christian Brothers can be a reality for students, just as it was for his family members and him.

DONOR PROFILE

Amber Ramos ’96 GIVING BACK Growing up in poverty and a single-parent household, Amber Ramos ’96 knows what it is like to not have much. Christian Brothers gave her the opportunity to be a thriving student, who was not only prepared for college, but for life. With the help of tuition assistance, Ramos was able to obtain a Lasallian Catholic education and experience CB’s mission. As a CB student, Ramos was a cheerleader and involved in the yearbook class. She fondly remembers Mr. English, who gave her a love for architecture, and Mr. Kirrene, who challenged his students to grow in their weaker areas of study. After high school, Ramos went on to attend University of the Pacific where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. However, her professional plan led her a different way, ending up in human resources, a field she has since been in for 18 years. “My career path was very accidental,” says Ramos. As a college student, she worked at UOP’s Career Resource Center where she met a recruiter at an employer recruitment event. She was asked if she ever thought about working in human resources due to her people skills. From there, she decided to give it a try, earning her master’s degree in human resources from Golden Gate University, and has enjoyed the work ever since. Ramos currently resides in the Silicon Valley and is a human resources professional for Atlassian, an international software company. With CB’s lasting positive influence on her life, she takes advantage of her company’s charitable match program to double the impact in helping deserving young women and young men receive tuition assistance to attend Christian Brothers, just like she did. “I feel compelled to give back because CB changed my life. The teachers taught me life skills through quality education,” says Ramos. “I learned how to organize and accomplish things and gain the confidence to pursue something great. I knew how challenging it was and I could feel the reward of what I was working for.” She credits much of her success to her CB teachers who believed in her and pushed her to be better and to continue pursuing challenging goals.

“I feel compelled to give back because CB changed my life. The teachers taught me life skills through quality education.”

Thanks to the generous support and dedication of alumni, donors and friends, Ramos was able to attend Christian Brothers and become the successful, career-driven woman that she is today. “The school creates high-achieving, successful students who go on to be successful adults, but the school does it in a way that’s not pretentious,” explains Ramos. “The Lasallian mission permeates how the school operates.” Ramos is proof that being a CB Falcon can be a reality for anyone, no matter where they come from.

ALUMNI LIFE

31st Annual

It’s one of the biggest and most-anticipated events of the year at Christian Brothers High School — the annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza.

Cantaliers, featuring Andrew Grajeda ’12 on the drums, brought classic and cool sounds with their return to the wine lawn stage. Foreverland, the electrifying 14-piece tribute band to Michael Jackson, performed on the beer garden stage on Koppes Plaza, resulting in nonstop dancing and high energy.

Each September, alumni, friends and families arrive at the CB campus to enjoy an evening of Sacramento’s finest food, libations and entertainment. Guests enjoyed samples from 36 breweries, 37 wineries and 29 eateries. The evening’s festivities raised a record-breaking $170,000 to support the CB tuition assistance program. A big thank you to Mike Genovese, Lon Burford ‘73 and Kelly Brothers of Genovese Burford & Brothers for being the event’s Presenting Sponsor.

“The level of support for our students from the community is astonishing. This event greatly impacts our tuition assistance program in supporting students who might otherwise not be able to attend CB,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Without the behind the scenes work put in by event chair Miamah Reed ’05, Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, Yolanda Torrecillas, director of alumni giving, and a hardworking group of alumni, volunteers and vendors, this event would not have been possible.”

Private Reserve Tasting attendees received the VIP treatment and enjoyed an exclusive selection of food and drinks an hour before the main event. A live performance by singer, songwriter and blues guitarist, Kyle Tuttle ’05, set the mood and got the party started on the Mary Lawn. There were familiar faces behind the bar as Paul Havey ’81, Tomas Capogreco ’86, Ken Bennett ’74 and Jill Bennett served as guest bartenders. Thank you to WHA and Rex Moore for sponsoring a fun VIP pre-party. The ever-so-popular Cigar Bar, sponsored by Rick Pires ‘79, Carpenters Union, and the class of 1979, had a variety of quality cigars, tasty bourbon milkshakes and delicious pork sliders served up by Joe Frasca and the team from Joe’s Meats. The

Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, Genovese Burford & Brothers, for their continued, generous support of the event as well as all of our sponsors. Thank you to the classes of 1970, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989 and 1996, the La Salle Club and the Athletic Department for hosting food and drink tables. Thank you to the IT Department for their behind the scenes work on the automated ticketing process. And of course, thanks to Neumann Enterprises and LYFT for their support and assistance in ensuring that revelers had a safe ride home. Be sure to not miss next year’s Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza on Friday, September 6, 2019.

“The level of support for our students from the community is astonishing. This event greatly impacts our tuition assistance program in supporting students who might otherwise not be able to attend CB.” LORCAN BARNES, CB PRESIDENT

Baseball Hall of Fame Dinner Knocks It Out of the Park The La Salle Club’s 64th annual Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame dinner was certainly a “grand slam” with a sellout crowd of more than 380 baseball fans filling the Jack Witry Field House. Each year, the La Salle Club hosts the dinner to celebrate the rich history and achievements of the Sacramento region’s baseball community. This annual event holds strong traditions as generations of baseball enthusiasts gather at Christian Brothers High School to honor former players, scouts, managers, coaches, umpires, and writers who have excelled in the game of baseball and contribute to the community. Likely the most prestigious group of inductees in event history, the Class of 2018 is comprised of:

Among them are World Series winners, Major League Baseball Managers of the Year, MLB All-Stars, a 45-season high school coach, a writer, the ascribed “father” of Sacramento State baseball and the man Forbes magazine named the Most Powerful Sports Agent in the World. The event was originally inspired during the World War II era to honor former Bush League players and continued in various forms for many years. The first official La Salle Club-hosted dinner at Christian Brothers was held in 1952, and the Hall of Fame was created the following year to showcase the talent and contributions that the region has made to the game of baseball. For more information on this year’s honorees, please visit their website at thelasalleclub.com. The La Salle Club was established in 1939 to raise money for sports teams and equipment at the school. That tradition continues today as proceeds from the dinner benefit CB’s athletic programs.
