Board of Trustees 2012-13 The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 11 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s Catholic, Lasallian mission. Before joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance – a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco. This summer, the board welcomed new member, John Nunan. Willie Nolan ’69 returns for the second year as chair. The Policy Governance model includes an inclusive, written set of goals for the school, called Ends Policies which guide the board in monitoring the performance of the school and its President/CEO. In the spring, a committee comprised of current and former trustees and members of the school’s faculty and administration, met to review and suggest revisions to the Ends Policies. In October, the committee met with the full Board of Trustees to review and finalize the recommended changes to ensure that Christian Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of the District of San Francisco. “I appreciate the time and attention that the Board of Trustees, former trustees and members of our faculty and administration devoted to reviewing and revising the Ends Policies,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “Advancing our Catholic, Lasallian mission ensures that students receive an excellent, holistic education and that Christian Brothers High School sustains its local legacy and tradition well into the future. I am grateful to the committee and the board for their time, leadership and dedication.”

Message From the President Fall 2012 Dear Alumni, Parents & Friends: According to Giving USA, Americans gave $298.5 billion to charity in 2011. But, times have been challenging. During the past six years, philanthropic giving has declined by 3 percent. Locally, the Sacramento region has been hard hit economically. As such, we are below the national average in both percentage of households giving and the average dollar amount given. At Christian Brothers High School, I’m relieved and grateful to say that we are countering the trend. Annual gifts last year increased by 6 percent. The number of alumni supporting the school increased by 15 percent. In 2011-12, donations totaled $2.4 million to support tuition assistance, operating needs and the Building on the Tradition Campaign – Phase II. Over the course of the last seven years, alumni, parents, families and friends have given a life-changing $12 million to the school. We are committed to serving as excellent stewards of your generosity and to enhancing the quality of campus life for our students. We opened the doors to the athletic field house in 2008 and have begun preconstruction projects for the new theater project (page 14). Most importantly, we provide more tuition assistance than any other local high school. This year, CB is providing $1.9 million in need-based tuition assistance to 356 deserving young men and women. We continue to build a community of students, faculty and alumni that are second to none in their contributions to the Sacramento community. But, we are also an independent, not-for-profit organization. In order to sustain our mission, and to see our mission thrive, we rely on your continued generosity and support. The enclosed Annual Report and list of donors (page 20) reflects gifts received during the July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012 time period, our 136th year. We are grateful to all of our benefactors and recognize that only through your generosity can we continue providing an excellent, valuescentered, Catholic, Lasallian education. Lifetime Achievement Award to the

Christian Brothers

The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Sacramento

honored the Christian Brothers with a Lifetime Achievement Award for their “longstanding and impactful contributions” to Catholic education in Sacramento. It was one of two inaugural awards recognizing the work of groups and individuals who have profoundly impacted Catholic schools in the area. The individual award was presented to Msgr. Edward Kavanagh of St. Rose Parish/St. Patrick SUCCEED Academy School.

“We were honored to receive the Diocese of Sacramento

Catholic Foundation inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award,” says Br. Donald Johanson, FSC, Brother Visitor of the District of San Francisco. “Bishop Soto was very kind in his tribute and we are grateful to the generations of families who entrusted us with the sacred responsibility of educating their sons and daughters. As we begin our 137th year of service to the young people of the Diocese of Sacramento, I am profoundly grateful to the many Brothers and Lay Partners who so tirelessly gave of themselves, and continue to give, to ensure that Christian Brothers High School remains a warm, vibrant and thriving school community.”

“The vocation of the Christian Brothers is teaching. As such,

they have been extraordinary teachers in sharing their mission, vision and values,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “Throughout my career, I have been blessed to work with a number of religious orders. None have been as intentional or as forward-thinking about sharing their charism and mission as the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Their willingness to so generously impart the Founder’s mission allows Catholic, Lasallian education to thrive with faith and zeal, not just in Sacramento, but, worldwide. Marian Shackel

CB’s 2012 Lasallian Educator of the Year “To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God.” St. John Baptist de La Salle Beloved CB educator, Marian Shackel, taught high school in Southern California for 21 years before deciding to relocate to the Sacramento area in 2000. Her goal was to move closer to her brother, Ken, and his family and to find a Catholic school where she could continue to share her love of literature and learning. After submitting résumés to each of the four Catholic high schools, she decided to check in with Christian Brothers. “I called to see if they received my résumé,” explains Shackel. “Within about five minutes, I got a call back. Kenny Kirrene ’78 was the English department chair and Tom Rutten was the principal. Kenny invited me to come in and meet with them and they hired me that day. I began teaching here in the fall of 2000. The minute I walked on this campus I knew it was the place for me. It just feels like community.” “When you meet Marian, it’s immediately apparent that she has a tremendous grasp of her subject matter, cares deeply for students and takes her role as an educator to heart,” says Kirrene. “I don’t think she knew it at the time, but at her core, she is Lasallian. The care and concern she shows for our young women and men are exactly what the Founder worked so diligently to foster in the Brothers.” Twelve years later, and Shackel’s feelings have not changed. “I love the students here,” she enthuses. “I’m fortunate because I get to teach freshmen and seniors. I get to see the transformation that occurs over their four years with us and watch them grow into these extraordinary young adults. I’m really in awe of some of my students and their potential. In fact, sometimes I think the kids are the Lasallian

educators. They teach me and they make me laugh. That is the part of teaching that is so amazing and it’s a great way to spend the day.” In fact, ask her to reveal the best part of her teaching day, she enthusiastically answers with “any time that I am in class. If you don’t love the kids, I don’t know what you are doing teaching. St. John Baptist de La Salle verbalized the idea that how we relate to those entrusted to our care is of paramount importance. The relationship we develop with the students is so important and I really try to develop a connection and show them that I care.” She also credits her coworkers with daily inspiration. “I am fortunate to work with a group of people who have shown me what it means to live the words of the Founder. I would love to have the cult following of Tom English. I really don’t know where he gets his energy. Randall McClure and Patti Gallagher ignite a spark in students that allows them to look at a subject and see it as more than just a subject. Working with so many phenomenal educators really keeps me working harder.” “Marian demonstrates her commitment in and out of the classroom to colleagues and students alike,” says Gallagher. “She goes above and beyond the call of duty to attend school events and support our students. She’s incredibly thoughtful, will do anything to help a student or coworker, and, her Aunt Tina’s cookie recipes are legendary.” “The Lasallian Educator of the Year Award is given each year to the faculty member who most exemplifies the spirit and dedication of St. John Baptist de La

Salle and his ministry to educate young people,” says Lorcan Barnes, president. “For the past 12 years, Marian Shackel has taken the words of the Founder to heart and ministered to students with tremendous dedication and care.” “Marian Shackel is a gifted educator with a heart of gold,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “Each day she lives the Lasallian ideal of teachers serving as big brothers, big sisters, guardian angels and good shepherds. Her commitment to touching the hearts and minds of our students goes beyond the classroom as she supports our student artists, student athletes, club activities and Kairos retreats. She is an inspiration to all of us and I am grateful for her service.” “Even to be nominated for this award is overwhelming,” says Shackel. “I don’t have the words to describe how it felt to be chosen and then to have my mom and other family members surprise me at the Liturgy. Wow!”

Korbinian Thalhammer ’13 Goes to Washington

Korbinian “Korbi” Thalhammer ’13 loves the great outdoors. Whether he’s running with

the CB cross country team, bike riding or hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Thalhammer is an avid outdoorsman. Last summer, he hiked the John Muir Trail with his father, Richard and hopes to hike all 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) before beginning college.

He is also an advocate for protecting the outdoors he loves. He is co-president of the

Environmental Club at CB and recently helped raise more than $1,000 for the Cosumnes River Preserve. In 2010, Thalhammer was awarded the Pacific Crest Trail Association’s Extra Mile Award for his outstanding advocacy and dedication to the trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. Each of the last three years, he organized a group of CB students and parents to help with trail maintenance. Twice, he has joined other members of the Association as they traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak out on behalf of the trail as a member of the “Hike the Hill” advocacy committee. This year, the group successfully secured $1 million from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The Forest Service will use the money to purchase privately owned parcels necessary to permanently protect the PCT.

“The Pacific Crest Trail gives a lot of people great experiences and memories that last a

lifetime,” says Thalhammer. “It’s available and free for everyone to use and it’s easily accessible. If I can help secure that for more people, then I will continue going to Washington and organizing maintenance trips.”

Welcoming students from around the world certainly helps move us in that direction.” Plans call for the program to grow slowly and circumspectly to ensure that all of the students are well served and cared for throughout high school. “We are very intentional in our admissions process,” says Kenny Kirrene ’78, admissions director. “We are careful to admit only students who can successfully take on the rigors of our curriculum, and, who also want to immerse themselves in our community. As the classroom doors opened on August 16 to begin Christian Brothers High School’s 137th year in Sacramento, students, faculty and staff welcomed eight new students from China, one student from Colombia, one student from Sweden and three students from Italy as part of CB’s new International Student Program. “The world is deeply connected and today’s students are connected, global citizens,” says Lorcan Barnes, president. “CB’s mission calls for innovation in ensuring that our students are prepared to take their place as ethical leaders in an interdependent, diverse and rapidly changing new world. Today, that means an international education that equips

University of Oregon,” he says. “I would rather go through this transition now at Christian Brothers than wait until I am in college.” Gallagher has also been impressed with the CB families willing to host the students. “We are grateful to the CB families who have opened their homes and hearts to our international students and we look forward to a positive and enriching cultural experience for all members of the CB community.” Kelsey Pfirrman ’13 and her family are hosting Kelly Xia ’16. “It’s been great having Kelly stay with us,” she enthuses. “Of course there are differences in our cultures. We expected that and we work through those. But, Kelly is like a member of the family. We love her.” “Throughout the years, Christian Brothers High School has welcomed students from varying countries,” says Barnes. “Launching an International Student Program is a strategic decision that benefits our students, contributes to a long-term strong and stable enrollment, and affords us the opportunity to provide a Catholic, Lasallian education to young people who may not have that opportunity in their home countries.” “In China, there is no talk of God,” says Wang. “In the beginning, I struggled in my religion class. I had never seen a cross. Who is God? When I watched kids do the sign of the cross, I had no idea who the Father, Son or Holy Spirit are. My teacher, Mr. Guro ’03, met with me after school and helped explain it to me.” “Welcoming students from other countries and cultures is only part of the equation,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “We know that in order to equip our students with 21st-century skills, learning about other cultures must be integrated into the study of literature, history, social studies, natural sciences, the arts, and other courses throughout the curriculum. Our faculty understands that teaching about other cultures, faiths, and ways of living will help our students better understand the various perspectives that frame our world.”

Like the admissions book says, CB is the place to be!” “We underestimated the demand for admission to Christian Brothers from students and parents in China,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “In talking with the parents, we learned that higher education options in China are limited and discerning Chinese families want American colleges. These families understand that an outstanding college prep school is a critical part of the formula. Each of the students to whom admission was offered has accepted our invitation. According to our partners at the Cambridge Institute of Education, this is unprecedented. We can all be proud that CB’s programs are ‘world class.’” Patricia Gallagher, French teacher and director of the International Student Program, has plans to expand the program to include students from additional countries. “I have already been talking with families from Spain, France and Belgium who are interested in sending their children to Christian Brothers,” says Gallagher. “Interest is high among families who value both community and excellent college preparatory education. Those are areas in which we simply can’t be beat.” “The teachers here are great,” says Christopher Guillen ’15. “They’ve really helped me a lot. I have to say it’s challenging to learn in English as opposed to Swedish and I definitely have more homework here. But, my teachers and classmates are always willing to help if there is something I don’t understand.” Guillen, a talented quarterback, plays for the Swedish National American Football Team and was moved up to CB’s varsity team as a sophomore. “I hope to play football in college. In fact, my dream is to play for the

extending to me the opportunity to return to Christian Brothers,” says Carmazzi. “I will always have tremendous respect for, and be grateful to, the Jesuit High School community for educating my sons and giving me a place to teach and coach these past 35 years. But, a part of me always wanted to return to Christian Brothers. Christian Brothers provided me with an excellent education and athletic experience under the guidance of Dick Sperbeck, Ron Limeberger ’53, Jack Witry, Dave Hoskins, Mel Fontes, John Zupan ’62 and Ralph Villanueva. This was a good time for me personally to make this transition and affords me the opportunity to give back. I’m excited and optimistic about the future direction of Falcon athletics. I’m also grateful that George Petrissans welcomed me to the football coaching staff.”

Carmazzi joins Jill Bennett, CB’s other co-athletic director, now in her tenth year of

overseeing athletics. He is also teaching AP Government and physical education.

“Our athletics program embraces the ideals of integrity, honor and excellence,” says

Barnes. “Dan and Jill understand that building young men and young women of character is essential to building winning teams and winning programs. Further, those ideals stay with the players long after they hang up their uniforms. They are nuturing better people, not just better athletes.”

Both he and Dan are terrific and our community is blessed to have them.”

A Great Night at Tower of Youth

Congratulations to CB’s video production students who had a great night at the 16th

annual Tower of Youth film festival in May. Alex Daly ‘13 and Brianna Pressey ‘13 won “Best of Category” in documentary for a social media news package. A.J. Johnson ‘12 and Nic Domek ‘12 won the the “Documentary Excellence Award” for “College Pressure.” Clare Manning ‘12 and Jordan Schneider ‘12 brought home the “Best of Category” award in Experimental Beauty/ Surrealism for their movie “La Foule.”

Sacramento Access Cable presented Ryan Peabody ‘12 and Jessica Szarek ‘12 with the “My

Voice Counts” gold award for their anti-texting & driving public service announcement.

Teacher Brendan Hogan ’95 and KBFT were recognized with an Award of Excellence that

included a Newtek Tricaster Studio-in-a-Box as the prize. The new equipment allows the KBFT crew to broadcast live from any venue that has internet access. For their first event, the group broadcast the 2012 graduation ceremony. Next, they took on Holy Bowl XLII.

CB Presents Dead Man Walking Sister Helen Prejean’s compelling novel, Dead Man Walking, was brought to life on the CB stage this past April. The drama, based on a true story, explores the issue of capital punishment as it looks at Sr. Helen’s efforts as a spiritual advisor to Matthew Poncelet, a death row inmate in Louisiana who is scheduled to be executed. Student actors, Mary Coyner ’12, and Angel Hernandez ’13 deftly portrayed Prejean and Poncelet in the show’s sold out, four-performance run.

The Curtain is Rising…Fall 2014 CB is the place to be for an outstanding education in media, visual and performing arts. With eight choral groups, eight instrumental performance groups, three annual theater productions, an award-winning campus television station and four annual art exhibitions, students enjoy numerous opportunities to discover and develop their God-given artistic abilities. “Arts education is a vital component of a well-rounded 21st century high school experience,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “We have a dedicated, talented team of faculty and remarkable students. Now, we’re excited to be on our way to giving them a place to shine – a performing arts center that allows them to fully develop and showcase their talents.” In November of 2008, Christian Brothers High School publicly announced its Building on the Tradition Campaign – Phase II with the grand opening of the $4.5 million athletic field house. While its completion marked a significant component of the campaign, the next critical need for students is the performing arts center. Although plans created in 2007 placed the theater on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. where Br. Bertram Hall currently sits; campus plans from the 1950’s were found that identified an alternative location at the northeast corner (between the SMAT wing and the varsity baseball field) of campus. After consulting with architects, the President’s Advisory Group, the Board of Trustees, the visual and performing arts department and senior school

administrators, a decision was made to relocate. Design plans for the new 350-seat facility are complete and the school recently began securing permits for the projects. “The arts teach students important life and career skills essential to success in the 21st century including communication, team work, creativity, discipline, self confidence, and commitment,” says Barnes. “In order to provide our students with the best educational experience possible, we must have facilities and programs that allow them to find and foster their God-given talents. This building helps us significantly in achieving that goal.” In order to accommodate the theater project, construction has begun to convert the library and little theater into classrooms to replace the modular classrooms that currently occupy the theater space. The guidance and counseling department will relocate to a new guidance center in Br. Bertram Hall. “The approximate cost of the project is $6.3 million,” says Barnes. “To date, we have secured 84 percent of the funding through donations and pledges. The remaining 16 percent will be raised from donors and/ or financed through school reserves. We are blessed to have no debt and a strong balance sheet, therefore we do not expect to incur outside debt. Fundraising efforts are continuing and I am confident that the Christian Brothers community will support this endeavor as they have every campus improvement over these past 136 years.”

Christian Brothers High School awarded diplomas to 234 distinguished young men and women as the school celebrated its 136th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 25. The day began with Baccalaureate Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament officiated by the Most Reverend Jaime Soto. Following Mass, graduates enjoyed a luncheon at the school and celebrated their graduation that evening at the Memorial Auditorium. The event proved to be the ideal ending to four years of hard work and special memories. Senior Class President Meg Taylor Class of 2012 salutatorian, Nicholas Domek, and (The George Washington University) served as master of valedictorian, Ryan Peabody ceremonies. Nicholas Domek (Santa Clara University) provided the Salutatory Address with Ryan Peabody (UCLA) honored as Valedictorian. Endowment Funds – Invest in the Future of CB Endowments are, quite simply, gifts that keep on giving! When donations are directed to endowment funds, the actual donation is placed in an investment account. The income generated is used to fund tuition assistance. The original donation, or principal, is never spent, just the earnings. Currently, CB’s endowment totals $7.8 million and generates approximately $330,000 in available funding each year. That money helps fund the $1.9 million in need-based tuition assistance awarded to 356 young men and women this year. An endowment is an investment in the future of Christian Brothers High School and its students. Contributions may be made to increase the principal amounts of these funds, thereby also increasing the income generated. La Salle Club Hosts 59th Annual Baseball Hall of Fame Dinner Take a seat at the La Salle Club Baseball Hall of Fame dinner and you might hear tell of Jim Westlake’s ’51 major league at bat for the Philadelphia Phillies, or Wally Westlake’s ’39 foray in the 1956 World Series. You might hear the legend of Leron Lee’s epic 500-foot blast off of Pat Fall, or reflections on Paul Carmazzi’s ‘’74 twenty-one conference championships as Sacramento City College’s baseball coach. Simply put, this is a group that loves baseball and celebrates the rich tradition of baseball in Sacramento. Each year, that same deep love of baseball is the impetus behind the La Salle Club’s Baseball Hall of Fame Dinner and awards ceremony. This year marked the 58th induction and awards ceremony. The event, held on April 28, honored inductees Jim Barr, Pat Fall, Mike Furtado, Ken Hottman, Don Murphy ’64,

a special tribute to the 1962 Bishop Armstrong Team and its coach, Dick Sperbeck. The La Salle Club was established in 1937 to raise money for sports teams and equipment at the school. That tradition continues today as proceeds from the dinner benefit CB’s athletic programs. 3

James “Jim” McNamara ‘47 August 17, 1928 – June 13, 2012

Ask family, friends and members of the CB community about Jim McNamara ‘47 and you are sure to hear about his warmth, humor, deep Catholic faith, commitment to service and unabashed love of baseball. As CB’s starting shortstop in 1946 and 1947, Jim’s fielding is credited with helping the Gaels finish the 1946 season with a perfect 14 and 0 record. In 1947, as co-captain of the team, he was named to the All-City team by both the Sacramento Union and Bee newspapers. Following graduation, Jim continued playing baseball in Sacramento. He Jim signed with the New York Giants organization in 1950 and played five seasons of minor league baseball. After returning home, he married Mildred Petralli, his wife of 56 years. Together, they were blessed with a loving family that included daughter, Patti Wagstaff (Joseph), son Tom ’78 (Julie). He was a devoted grandfather to Jennifer ’07, Alex ’12 and John ’14 Wagstaff, and Kelsey ’10, Jimmy ’12 and Joe ’16 McNamara. Jim loved Christian Brothers High School, serving as president of the La Salle Club for many years. In that role, he helped raise thousands of dollars for CB’s athletic program. He chaired the Baseball Hall of Fame Dinner for 13 years and his stamp on the event is indelible. As a parent, he served as vice president and president of the Parent Service Club and later as a member of the Board of Regents. He generously supported and assisted with the Building on the Tradition Campaign, Phases I and II that brought the Science, Math and Technology wing and the athletic field house to campus. In 2007, the school’s Alumni Association presented McNamara with its most prestigious honor, the Alumni Service Award, in recognition of his many years of dedicated service. When Jerry Kirrene ’53 formed a committee to chronicle the long and storied history of Christian Brothers High School, he asked Jim to research and write about baseball. For two years, Jim researched and then worked with his nephew, Joe McNamara ’83, to write what accounts to a 70 page book. Professionally, Jim enjoyed a 34-year career as an administrator at the Sacramento County Courthouse. Following his retirement in 1987, Jim began a 25-year run in senior softball that included many hours on the field with his brother, Frank’51, and continued until shortly before his passing. “Jim was one of the kindest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “He was Lasallian to his very core in a life filled with faith, family, baseball, and service. All of those, he embraced with tremendous zeal and a joyful spirit. I believe the world is a better place because of Jim, Christian Brothers High School certainly is, and I am better for having known him.” Jim is survived by Mildred, his children, grandchildren and siblings, Mary Kessinger, John ’50 and Francis’51, and numerous nephews and nieces. A Family of Friends When classmates and friends of Christina Pirruccello-Rosales ’96 learned in May that Christina’s breast cancer had virulently returned and metastasized, they were determined to help. Initially, they planned to collect money to help with daily expenses or to send the family on a vacation to help create memories for Christina, her husband Ryan, and their two-year-old daughter, Ella. When they shared their plans with Christina, she responded with a firm “no, thank you.” “If you are going to help me, help send my daughter to Christian Brothers,” she said. Twenty years ago, Christina’s family brought her to CB, even though it meant a 45-minute drive each way from Woodland. At CB she made lifelong friends and garnered a sense of values that resonated long after graduation. Giving that to her daughter was much more important than a vacation, Christina said. Sadly, she lost her battle with cancer on October 16, her 34th birthday. Christina’s CB friends worked resolutely to organize the first annual Bike Ride 2 Beat Cancer. The trek, from deVere’s Irish Pub in Sacramento to deVere’s Irish Pub in Davis, culminated with a spirited silent auction. More than 50 bikers participated in the July 28th event, including numerous CB alumni. As a result, $31,000 was placed in a trust for Ella. “We kicked around a lot of ideas and thought this might be a good way to show support,” said de Vere’s Irish Pub co-owner Henry de Vere White ’97. “When Christina beat cancer the first time in July of 2011, she took took up bike riding, so we all felt having a ride would be a good fit.” “Christina was totally blown away by the event,” says close friend, Mary HoganHuarte ’97. “She couldn’t believe that that many people came out and reached out to her. But, I wasn’t surprised. CB is such an amazing place and experience. We don’t always realize how connected we are, but, when something happens, we’re family and we’re there to help. Really, Christian Brothers is the place where Christina’s family of friends originated.” According to Henry deVere White ’97, the event will continue as an annual event at least until Ella’s tuition is fully funded,

possibly longer. Additional proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research at the UC Davis Medical Center. Christina’s family has also established an annual scholarship in Christina’s name that will benefit CB students for years to come. Though I did not have the pleasure of knowing Christina, I’ve been told that she was an incredibly warm, outgoing, loving and vibrant person,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “She loved her family deeply and cherished her friends. As evidenced by the phenomenal outpouring of support, she was loved very much in return. Because of Christina, Ella and countless other young women and men will be welcomed into the CB family. What a fitting legacy and tribute to this wonderful young woman.”

On a mission to make the 25th annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza the largest & most successful celebration in event history, the CB Alumni Association spent the last year working to secure sponsors, recruit wineries, breweries & restaurants, & sign up attendees. Judging by the record-setting crowd of 1,700 & more than 100 enthusiastic vendors, the group succeeded in meeting its goal & then some. Richard Peter ’64 was inspired by Martin Sheen’s film, The Way, to travel the Camino de Santiago. In September and October of 2012, over the course of 20 days, he biked the 500-mile path from Roncesvalles on the French-Spanish border to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. Traveling the Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage to the reputed site of the tomb of St. James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles. Peter says the trip gave him the opportunity to deal with the physical and mental challenges of biking some tough terrain, engage in some extensive introspection on his life, immerse himself in the Spanish language and culture, and the opportunity to speak with dozens of “pilgrims” from all over the world. It was an unforgettable experience that he recommends to anyone who is physically able to walk or ride the path. Rocky Niehaus ’74 took home first prize at the fourth annual Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation’s Rib Cook-Off at the Hilltop Tavern. Jacque Walter ’74 is currently living in Washington and working as an independent investment portfolio manager. He is a graduate of both American River College and University of Phoenix and completed a course in practical gunsmithing at American Gunsmithing. Walter also enjoys selling artwork on Etsy.

Jeffrey Wells ’75 puts his years of experience with the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento Sheriff ’s Department to use as the owner and operator of Jeffrey J. Wells Private Investigation Services. The business investigates a host of civil, criminal, personal and business issues.

Stan Mette ’82, Luis Maldonado ’82, Steve Kreizenbeck ’82, Paul Harrington ’82, Troy Bird ’82, & Eric Edelmayer ’82 enjoyed some serious male bonding in Chicago as the Giants took on the Cubs at historic Wrigley Field. Vince Delgado ’84 was inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame for his performances in the 1982 and 1983 Holy Bowls. In 1982, he carried 15 times for 169 yards and 1 touchdown. He surpassed those numbers the next year with 204 yards on 26 carries. The Falcons won both games. As a senior, Vince played a key role as the team went 13-1 and won the section title. He rushed for 2,357 yards and 22 touchdowns and was named the Sacramento Bee Player of the Year. He was named All-State and went on to play for UC Berkely. Vince’s son, Max, joined him for the trophy presentation at this year’s Holy Bowl. Rolf Davidson ’92 is working as Associate Executive Director of California YMCA Youth & Government in Sacramento. Peter Hoey ’97 is currently working at Brewers Supply Group, the largest supplier of ingredients to craft breweries in the country. He was hired as a Technical Sales Representative for the Brewers Supply Group. In the position, he is able to use his vast brewing knowledge as he provides consulting services, technical support, sales and ingredient sourcing for all of his customers. He currently services California, Nevada and Hawaiian breweries.

Abigail (Goldthwaite) Crouch ’97 is the founder of the A Heart to Hold charity which offers comfort to families who have suffered pregnancy and infant loss. In 2011, Crouch’s second son, Corbin David, was stillborn. It was a shock as the pregnancy was completely normal. He weighed 9 lbs, 13 oz. and was 21 inches long. The morning after, Abigail’s midwife came over to see how the family was doing. She presented the family with a heart-shaped pillow weighing 9 lbs, 13 oz. explaining that mothers who lose babies heal better with something to hold in their arms. The pillow was created by a mother who had also lost a child. Because the pillow provided so much comfort to the Crouch family, Abigail decided to launch A Heart to Hold to help other families suffering loss. Eric Harris ’05 is in his second year of law school at the University of Oregon. Harris spent the summer working as an intern in Washington, D.C. for the Democratic National Committee. In his work for the political department, Harris wrote briefings for dignitaries traveling West. He also spent time advocating for Americans with Disabilities Act causes. Capping off the summer, Harris was invited to address College Democrats at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Evan Burford ’07 accepted a new job as a senior financial analyst at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Megan Dagang ’07 graduated in 2011 from St. Mary’s College in Moraga with a degree in Italian. She was also the recipient of the De La Salle Award. In May, she will graduate from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley with a master’s degree in Theology which she will use in her work as a youth minister at Santa Maria Church in Orinda.

Robert Meyer ’09 is on schedule to graduate from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with degrees in both Marine Engineering and Facilities Engineering in June. He will then either work as a ship engineer with the Merchant Marine or attend graduate school. Nolan Wallner ’09 spent much of the past year studying communications in Rome, Italy. One of Wallner’s instructors, Sean Lovett, works as the director of Vatican City radio. Wallner recorded an interview in the recording studio Pope John Paul II used to record his Polish radio programs. He also enjoyed creating a study abroad commercial in the Vatican TV station. The best part of the adventure, though, was immersing himself in a totally different culture and learning so much about Italy and the history of Rome. During his time off, he traveled to Greece.

Daniel Calvillo ’08 graduated from Santa Clara University with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in economics.

Xochitl Hermosillo ’10 is currently attending Sacramento City College and working at Masullo Pizza. When she isn’t singing, at school or cooking, she is writing music. Congratulations to Will Simmons ’10, a junior Harvard University, who was named a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and a Carol K. Pforzheimer Fellow, Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America. These prestigious research fellowships are awarded to some of Harvard’s best and brightest scholars. As such, Simmons will be published in the Harvard Undergraduate Research Journal.

Asa Jackson ’08 was drafted in the 5th round by the Baltimore Ravens. His hard work in training camp paid off as he earned a spot on the final roster as a cornerback/right safety. During his rookie season, it’s expected that Asa will see playing time as a punt returner. Congratulations Asa, we’ll be watching! Connor Long ’08 graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He hopes to attend either graduate school or medical school in the near future. Congratulations to golfers Cameron ‘08 and Grant ‘08 Rappleye, and Jordan Swanson ‘09 who helped CSUS clinch the America Sky Conference championship. Cameron was the America Sky medalist with the lowest individual total in the

Alex Contreras ’11 is a sophomore at Stanford University leaning toward majoring in Management, Science, and Engineering. School has been an incredible experience for him and CB prepared Contreras well for the rigors and challenges college presents. He is currently spending most of his free time with the men’s basketball team as he recently became a manager for them. He will be on the bench during every home game and even travel to some away games. Contreras hopes to take advantage of every future opportunity that comes his way, and college is a wonderful place to do so! Aijalon Range ’11 was awarded a Walter F. Burnett, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. She is currently a sophomore at Tuskegee University with aspirations of attending law school in the future.
