Message From the President November 2016 Dear Alumni, Families and Friends: Each day that I come to work at Christian Brothers High School, I see the culmination of 140 years of Lasallian Catholic education in Sacramento and the result is nothing short of a masterpiece. Our 1,149 young men and women thrive in an inclusive, nurturing, faith-filled community. Our faculty and staff are devoted to excellence in education while touching the hearts and minds of the students entrusted to our care. I am profoundly grateful to God for the grace He has shown in the many Brothers, teachers, staff members, alumni, families, students and friends who collectively shaped Christian Brothers into the phenomenal school community that it is today. This issue of Connection contains the Annual Report which recognizes the many donors who so generously supported the school between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Thanks, in large part to their generosity, we lead the region in need-based tuition assistance. In 2016-17, we are distributing $2.6 million in need-based tuition assistance to 435 deserving students (nearly four of every 10 students). At this year’s commencement, Elmer Lizarde ’16, himself a recipient of tuition assistance, delivered one of the most powerful salutatorian addresses that I have heard. The depth of his understanding of the Lasallian Core Principles and stalwart appreciation for the Lasallian educators and classmates who so lovingly embodied them over the course of his four years was palpable. “We are bound together by a set of values and principles that encourage us to act on our love…What we've learned here goes beyond common knowledge, because quality education reaches much farther than a classroom. Inclusive community isn't a goal, but a standard; concern for the poor isn't an idea, but an action; respect for all people is a responsibility; and faith in the presence of God is a blessing." - Elmer Lizarde ’16, salutatorian We are grateful to our benefactors for their loyal partnership…for acting on their love. Please know that we are careful stewards of their gifts and continue in our commitment to fiscal responsibility while maintaining the CB tradition of excellent, value-centered, Lasallian Catholic education. If you haven’t been to campus in a while, I invite you to stop by for a tour and see firsthand the many reasons CB is the place to be. Live Jesus in our Hearts!

140TH COMMENCEMENT On Friday, May 27, Christian Brothers High School celebrated its 140th commencement, awarding diplomas to graduating seniors and adding 238 young men and women to its renowned ranks of alumni. The day began with Baccalaureate Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament officiated by the Most Reverend Bishop Myron J. Cotta. Following mass, graduates and families enjoyed a luncheon at school and celebrated graduation that evening at Memorial Auditorium. The evening proved to be the ideal ending to four years of hard work and special memories. Senior class President Efrain Vallejo (Seton 2 Hall University) served as master of ceremonies. Elmer Lizarde (UCLA) provided the salutatory address with Anysia Lee (Duke)

serving as valedictorian. The band earned a loud roar of applause for their lively rendition of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” followed by a performance of “I Love You/What a Wonderful World” by the choir. Lizarde concluded his beautiful Salutatory address with the following, “What we’ve learned here goes beyond books and common knowledge, because quality education reaches much further than a classroom. Inclusive community isn’t a goal, but a standard. Concern for the poor isn’t an idea, but an action. Respect for all people is a responsibility. And faith in the presence of God is a blessing… Thanks to Christian Brothers, you all understand that God is love, and every small act of love goes a long way… Class of 2016, as you disperse across the United States and the world, remain true to the one vocation of every Lasallian, Leave to Serve… Class of 2016, Serve the world.”

A Summer in Morocco Summer is often the time for students to press pause on their studies and enjoy the warmweather months. Junior Katherine Stiplosek ’18 not only spent her summer studying a new language, but did so in a classroom halfway around the world. In the spring, Stiplosek was awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship through the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to learn Arabic in the north African country of Morocco. She was one of approximately 600 competitively selected students from across the United States to receive the scholarship to study languages identified as critical by the U.S. State Department. Stiplosek spent six weeks in Morocco’s capital, Rabat, with a host family, attending full days of Arabic class along with 17 other American students. “I would have full days of class learning to speak Arabic from the ground up, then I would

go home and do homework and do it all over again the next day. It was very challenging to learn a totally new language in just six weeks, but extremely rewarding,” says Stiplosek ’18. When not doing homework, she spent her evenings bonding with her host family and exploring the local bazaar markets. On the weekends, Stiplosek traveled on guided excursions with the other American students to places like Marrakesh, Casablanca, the “Blue City” of Chefchaouen and the Sahara Desert. She especially enjoyed riding camels through the desert and watching the sun rise. Stiplosek returned from her summer adventures in Morocco with a new outlook on life. “I gained a whole new perspective on the world by stepping out of my comfort zone and immersing myself in a totally different culture to learn their language. While I was in Morocco, I kept telling myself to try to image life in the shoes of others and to see myself from their perspectives. This outward thinking allowed me to fully appreciate the privileges of home and gain insight into a culture and religion I knew nothing about before. Best of all, I gained a whole new family on the other side of the world that I hope to see again someday.” Stiplosek plans to continue practicing Arabic to reach fluency level and hopes to use her bilingual skills in a political career in the future.

ANIMAL CRACKERS Chico, Harpo and Groucho Marx lived again in CB’s spring musical production of the Marx Brothers classic, Animal Crackers. The early 20th century play centers around the chaos following the theft of a valuable painting during a party to honor glorified African explorer, Captain Spaulding. CB’s fantastic student-actors dedicated many hours to researching their roles and channeling the personas of the famous siblings. Over 60 students worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on stage to bring the beautiful production to life on the stage of the Thea Stidum Theatre. Bravo!

CB TAKES HOME FOUR ELLY AWARDS CB had another great showing at the Sacramento Area Regional Theater Alliance’s annual Elly Awards on September 11. The awards recognize high school theatre productions from the entire Sacramento region, stretching from El Dorado Hills to Stockton. CB's fall production of The Tempest garnered four Elly Awards, including Ian

Ferrell '17 for Best Supporting Actor in a Play, Michael D. Jackson for Best Costume Design in a Play, and Heather Christianson '01 for Best Scenic Design in a Play and Best Lighting Design in a Play. Congratulations to the winners and all those who contributed to CB’s fantastic theatre productions this year!

Christian Brothers Names 47th Principal Christian Brothers High School is proud to welcome the school’s 47th principal, Mr. John O’Connor. O’Connor brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to Lasallian Catholic education to the position, as seen in his 22 years of experience in education, 17 of those with Lasallian schools. O’Connor attended Archbishop O’Hara High School, a Lasallian Catholic school, in Kansas City, Missouri. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from University of Missouri, Columbia and a master’s degree in school leadership from Baker University. He returned to his high school alma mater eight years later to begin his teaching career and coach football. He then moved on to serve as dean of students, athletic director, assistant principal and principal at other schools in Kansas City before ultimately returning to Archbishop O’Hara in 2011 to serve as principal and activities director. In 2015, the diocese made the decision to close Archbishop O'Hara and replace the school with a new Catholic high school that would not be guided by the Lasallian charism. “I am so happy to be at Christian Brothers because of its strong Lasallian tradition and amazing school culture,” says O’Connor. “Since the start, it has felt incredibly warm and welcoming. There is an indescribable energy on campus and within the student body. Everyone I encounter has been fantastic to work with. I look forward to having a great school year and continuing the tradition of Christian Brothers.”

“I’m grateful to be entrusted with the sacred responsibility of working with our amazing faculty and staff to ensure that Christian Brothers High School is the place to be, now and in the future.”

“It was clear during the hiring process that John O’Connor is deeply committed to Lasallian Catholic traditions,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “His dedication to De La Salle’s mission and experience in the classroom, on the field and as an administrator were unparalleled. There is no doubt that we have found an outstanding person to take the reins and continue leading Christian Brothers on a path of success and excellence.” The O’Connor family left Kansas City in July and has since been adjusting to a new neighborhood and new schools. Emma ’20 is in her freshman year at Christian Brothers and Zoe attends sixth grade at Sacred Heart School in East Sacramento. John’s wife, Kelly, is an elementary school teacher at St. Robert Catholic School. “It is an honor to be here,” says O’Connor. “I’m grateful to be entrusted with the sacred responsibility of working with our amazing faculty and staff to ensure that Christian Brothers High School is the place to be, now and in the future.”

2016 Lasallian Educator of the Year CHUCK ZANNETTI Students erupted in boisterous cheers as Mr. Chuck Zannetti made his way to the front of the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium to receive the 2016 Lasallian Educator of the Year award at the Founder’s Day Liturgy on April 28. The award came just days before the end of the school year and the beginning of Zannetti’s retirement after 26 years of teaching religion at Christian Brothers. Initially working towards a life in the priesthood, Zannetti’s plans changed when he met and fell in love with his now wife, Patty Kirrene. He began working at Christian Brothers in 1990, just as CB became a coeducational school. “Every year this school keeps getting better and better. The students are wonderful, the programs have grown immensely, and the Lasallian mission is so strong throughout the community. I have seen the development of CB over the past 26 years and I will miss it dearly,” says Zannetti. “He is a blessing to this community and has left an imprint on each student’s heart. Through his excellence in teaching, bright personality, and his emphasis on the Catholic faith, Mr. Zannetti has been a sign of faith for me. He has taught me to serve others by his example. He continuously commits himself to his vocation of being a Lasallian,” says Anna Sorensen ’16. For Brendan Hogan ’95, Zannetti wears many hats including teacher, colleague and friend, “As teachers sometimes we don’t know if the lessons we are teaching are actually being learned. Teachers can test for them and students can remember for a week or more, but do you retain them for a lifetime? When I encounter alumni, they remember Mr. Zannetti’s religion class and can recount a lesson and

experience from room 203. They remember because he is a sign of faith for them.” Hogan continues, “I had a conversation with a late-90s grad who remembered his senior seminar’s first day of class. These memories LANDED and more importantly these lessons have been learned and that’s the mark of a Lasallian educator. Faith, spirituality and religion are complex issues, and Zannetti has been exploring these ideas with young minds here at Christian Brothers for 26 years as an educator and a true ‘Signum Fidei’ (sign of faith) to his students, to his colleagues and to me personally. He is more than deserving of his recognition as CB’s 2016 Lasallian Educator of the Year.” “When thinking back on my high school experience, the one teacher that stands out most is Mr. Zannetti. He is an all-around amazing person and he clearly cares for his students. Zannetti has a great personality and is easy to talk to. He is the perfect role model of faith and character,” says Paty Patlan ’15.

Zannetti feels honored to be recognized with his esteemed colleagues, “The Lasallian Educator of the Year award began in my first year at CB and I know all of the recipients. It is a truly an honor to receive this award and to be included in a group with those individuals. There are so many of my colleagues who deserve this recognition, they should really give out more than one award each year. Christian Brothers High School is a unique place and the spirit of De La Salle is very much alive and present here. I will miss the CB community greatly, however, now I have a reason to come back and visit at least once a year.” “Chuck Zannetti really connected with his students and the overall CB community,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “His classes had a reputation for sparking deep and meaningful dialogue with students on complex issues of spirituality and life. The energy, passion and respect he has for teaching and the Lasallian charism which he brought with him every day to campus will be greatly missed. We wish Chuck well in his retirement.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Sam Regalado ‘07 CB WAS THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME… Sam Regalado ’07 demonstrates exactly why Christian Brothers High School provides young people of limited financial means with the finest possible academic and spiritual education. As a student who faced serious challenges and financial limitations, his life was dramatically improved by his four years at CB. Sam graduated with honors from Christian Brothers, received his bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and is now working towards both his M.D. and Ph.D. at University of Washington. Tuition assistance made all the difference in Sam’s life and he’s not shy in stating how he feels about the impact its donors have made in his life.

“Christian Brothers was my saving grace!” Sam’s early interest in biology at Christian Brothers inspired him to study biochemistry as a pre-med major at Cal. His commitment to his studies is only outshone by his passionate drive to serve others through medical research and innovations. His scholastic achievements on their own are impressive. His ability to focus on his studies during teen years marked by instability and uncertainty is noteworthy. Sam chalks up much of his success – both as an academic and as a person – to the teachers at CB who taught him life values along with coursework.

“It’s where you start that matters most. I got my start at Christian Brothers because someone invested in a kid like me, a kid who otherwise never would have had a chance. Statistically speaking, I am not where I’m supposed to be. CB was the difference for me.” Christian Brothers’ commitment to the Lasallian tradition of giving a “human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor and working class” provides opportunities that make a critical difference for hundreds of students each year. Sam, as a young alumnus, made his first gift to CB this year, saying “that’s why I decided to give to Christian Brothers. I’m a student, so I can’t give a lot, but I’m giving what I can so that others can have the same chance I did.” 16 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 25

DONOR PROFILE

Kathy Separovich Davis ‘63 A LEGACY OF FAITH, FAMILY AND LOVE Kathy Separovich Davis ‘63 remembers her time at Bishop Armstrong High School fondly, but that is not where her Christian Brothers story begins. It begins in 1918 when her grandfather died in the influenza epidemic, leaving her father Mark Separovich '31, then five years old, and his three siblings to be raised by his mother alone. The family lived near 3rd and O streets, a poor neighborhood in those days. As a child of immigrants, raised by a single mother, Mark’s prospects were not great. Br. Benebern invited Mark to try out for the Christian Brothers baseball team. When Mark’s mother indicated that she simply couldn’t afford the tuition, Br. Benebern arranged for Mark to attend Christian Brothers tuition-free. Mark went on to excel in athletics at CB as a pitcher, graduating in 1931, but more importantly he became a man of quiet faith and strong character.

“Christian Brothers changed the trajectory of my father’s life,” says Kathy, “and because of that it changed my life and that of my whole family. Despite growing up without a father figure, my dad became a man of good character and a wonderful husband and father. This is due in large part to the generosity and support of the Christian Brothers community.” In quiet word and deed, Kathy’s father taught his family that Faith, Family and Love are far more important than any material things. Because of his experiences at Christian Brothers, Mark made sure to provide a Catholic education for his two daughters. Kathy Separovich Davis graduated from Bishop Armstrong in 1963 and Janet Separovich graduated from Bishop Manogue in 1969. Reflecting fondly on her high school years, Kathy notes, “There was a real sense that the nuns and brothers cared. They cared if we learned. We felt safe and it was a wonderful community.” 26 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

Kathy remembers her sister Janet as an “indescribably lovely” person. She lived passionately, lived her faith, and practiced what she learned in her Catholic education including respect and tolerance. Janet’s life was also characterized by perseverance, earning her bachelor’s degree in 2000. “It may have taken her a while,” says Kathy, “but she never gave up.” When she passed away unexpectedly in 2010, Kathy learned that just about everyone considered Janet to be their own best friend. When looking at Christian Brothers today, Kathy sees the same legacy of faith and love that shaped her father’s life, her sister’s, and her own. “After talking to friends about their children’s experience, I can tell that Christian Brothers is still helping low income students. Still teaching faith, values and character. The parents I know see it most when their kids go away to college. They are ready both academically and morally for the challenges they face.” From her own family experience, Kathy believes that education is the only way up and out of poverty. And she also believes that it is important to quietly do good. “My children have had a comfortable life, and have never known the hardships my father did. I think it’s important that they know upon whose shoulders they stand.” For all these reason, Kathy decided this year to honor the memory of her sister and father with a gift to Christian Brothers, establishing the Mark J. Separovich ’31 Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Janet M. Separovich ’69 Endowed Scholarship Fund.

“This is my chance to pay it forward,” says Kathy, “I am so happy to know that I can honor their memory and help low income children at CBHS have the same life-changing opportunity my father had.”

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 33

DONOR PROFILE

Vince McDonald ‘72 COMMUNITY AND FOUNDATION Vince McDonald’s foundation began in a strong Catholic family of Lebanese Christians, deeply rooted in community and Christian values. In his extended family, Catholic education was a priority. Faith and values were a part of daily life. In 1956 just as the first class of Bishop Armstrong High School, now Christian Brothers High School, was starting at the brand new Oak Park campus, Vince’s father founded McDonald Plumbing, Heating & Air. Vince himself entered Christian Brothers’ Oak Park campus as a freshman in 1968. Growing up as the middle child, the only boy with six sisters, he loved the all boy environment. Says Vince, “I didn’t have to worry about how to dress or how to look. Plus, I was outnumbered at home!” Vince recalls, “In elementary school, my grades weren’t great, I wasn’t a serious student. It wasn’t until I got to Christian Brothers that I woke up. I entered in basic classes, but by the time I left I was in all advanced classes.” He attributes this change in attitude to the caring teachers and staff.

“They taught me that you have to apply yourself. Athletics also helped me stay focused.” He recalls formative discussions with Br. Thomas in homeroom and Br. Claude who taught Religion and Psychology, noting that the lessons learned in these interactions have stayed with him throughout his life. “The Christian values I learned at CB have been important to me my whole life. CB gave me my foundation.” After graduation Vince spent four years in an apprenticeship. And just as he learned to apply himself at CB, he applied the skills he learned in apprenticeship to help build the family business. Working together, he and his father shaped McDonald Plumbing, Heating & Air into something that looks much different today than it did back in 1956 when his father founded it.

34 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

Vince took over his father’s business in 1984, and moved to its Oak Park location in 1989. “People thought I was crazy for moving here at that time. But having gone to CB, I was familiar with the neighborhood. I was comfortable here.” Vince tries always to be a good neighbor and a part of the community. His formula is straightforward, he respects people and in return, enjoys the respect of the neighborhood. Vince and McDonald Plumbing, Heating & Air have been a long standing sponsor of CB’s Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza. “It’s a great event, one we’re really proud and happy to support. It feels good to give back.” Vince has gone one step beyond his annual gift and remembered CB in his will. This decision reflects his core values, “I’ve taught my kids that money won’t make you happy. I’ve been fortunate in my life and I can afford to give back now, to what I feel is most important in my life. And CB is an important part of my life. I feel blessed.” Through the years, Vince has stayed in close touch with classmates, and still enjoys that bond of brotherhood. But he notes that there’s also a special connection you feel to anyone else in the CB community, whether or not you graduated together. “This school has a long legacy, and when you’re a part of it, you just feel connected to others in the CB community.” He is also clear that while he loved his all-boy experience, he has come to value the co-ed experience at CB today. “It’s a real world situation at CB. Girls and boys, and the full spectrum of income levels. Students learn respect for each other. That’s important when they have to go out and live in the world.”

“When I run into kids wearing their CB gear, I always ask them how they like their school. They always say they LOVE it! I laugh because who says these days that they LOVE high school?!!” CB kids do.

Golfers drove, chipped and putted in support of CB Athletics at the first annual Christian Brothers Family and Friends Golf Tournament on June 17. The sold-out tournament, organized by The La Salle Club, blanketed both courses at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex with over 200 CB alumni, family and friends competing for the first place title. The day kicked off with a Pitch and Putt Clinic given by David ’84 and Kevin ’82 Sutherland, PGA Tour professionals and CB alumni. The Sutherland brothers expertly taught the finer points of golfing on and around the green to tournament players, exhibiting many of their new skills later on the course. A total of 50 foursomes played the Haggin Oaks Alistair McKenzie and Arcade courses extremely well, with some familiar Christian Brothers golfing families taking home the biggest prizes. The Rappleye family foursome consisting of Grant ’08, Kevin, and Hunter ’13, along with Jasper Gill, took home first place on the Alistair Mackenzie course. On the Arcade Course, the McMullen family foursome took home first place- congratulations to Scott Gillaspy, Will Osen ’18, Jackson ’15 and Eric ’18 McMullen for showcasing their golf skills on this great day.

$18,000 FOR CB ATHLETICS The event raised an impressive $18,000 for CB athletics. Kirk Murphy '77, tournament director, is thrilled with the support from the CB community. “I am extremely proud and excited about the turnout and overall support for the CB Family and Friends Golf Tournament. The ability to support Christian Brothers and the Athletic Department through a memorable day of fun, friendship and fundraising for a great program has been very rewarding. It couldn't have been accomplished without the support of The La Salle Club Board, Dale Milton, Rolf Schumann and the Haggin Oaks Tournament Director Charlie Cheung ’73. We look forward to having another amazing day at next year’s event." Special thanks to the event sponsors including Haggin Oaks Golf Complex and CB graduate Charlie Cheung ’73, Rex Moore Electrical (Brock Littlejohn ’85), Digital Dr. Tablet Specialists (Kenny McKechnie ’88), Gallina and Associates/John Donovan '77, Cleveland/Srixon Golf, Athletics Unlimited, Metro PCS, Home Start and Friends of CB Softball, along with many other in-kind sponsors that made this day a special one for The La Salle Club and the Christian Brothers family. Planning is already underway for the second annual CB Family and Friends Golf Tournament on June 2, 2017.

Signature Event Still Thriving 29 Years Later! A beautiful full moon lit up the sky over a vibrant CB campus at the 29th annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza in September. Attendees sampled libations from 67 wineries and breweries while noshing on delicious appetizers donated by more than 30 Sacramento area eateries. Private Reserve attendees enjoyed an additional hour of celebrating including music by Jackson Rohm and an exclusive selection of food and drinks. The evening’s festivities generated over $147,000 to support the CB tuition assistance program. Tables hosting wineries, breweries and restaurants covered the CB campus from the main lawn to the Koppes Family Plaza as 2,000 party goers made their way through the electric crowd to visit with friends and classmates. Patrons of the new Speakeasy Lounge enjoyed 1920s-themed signature cocktails, sparking wine and cigars on the Mary Lawn. High-energy dance band Livewire brought down the house in the beer garden with their mix of hits from the 70’s, 80’s and today. “Every year I am astounded by the level of community support for this event. From attendees to the vendors, the event just keeps getting bigger and better thanks to the generosity of all involved,” explains Lorcan Barnes, CB president. “This event would not be possible without the dedication of event co-chairs John Silva '98 and Matt Ruggiero '00, Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, Yolanda Torrecillas, director of alumni giving, and the entire Alumni Association Board of Directors. Without their months of hard work and dedication, we would not be able to change the lives of students who directly benefit from the funds raised at this event.” A special thank you to the Classes of 1970, 1972, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989 and 2000 for hosting food and drink tables. A big thank you to Rick Pires '79 and his classmates for providing the wonderful hors d’oeuvres and delicious BBQ during the Private Reserve. Planning is already underway for the 2017 Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza. Be sure to read the spring 2017 edition of Connection magazine for more information about the event.

For the fourth consecutive year, Christian Brothers High School has earned a place on the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging Private High Schools.” Using a Challenge Index formula designed to identify schools who challenge their students academically, author Jay Matthews ranks high schools from across the country, looking at the ratio of college-level tests given and the student body size of each school. Also noted are the percentages of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one Advanced Placement test during their high school career, called equity and excellence (E&E). With rigorous academics molding students into college-ready graduates, CB continues to be the place to be! CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION 43

Ambassadors' Club Dinner 2016 A warm October evening served as the perfect backdrop for the 32nd annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner celebrating CB’s most generous supporters. Guests enjoyed the musical styling of harpist Alanna O’Neill ’19 and delectable hors d’oeuvres during the welcome reception. A delicious dinner was later served while the CB Chamber Choir provided the dinner entertainment. The program commenced with a State of the School address by President Lorcan Barnes, followed by a video directed by Harrison Daly ’17 and Alex Tagudin ’17. John O’Connor, 47th principal of Christian Brothers, delivered the keynote speech. The evening concluded with the presentation of the 2016 Ambassadors of the Year award to Willie ’69 and Sheila Nolan.

44 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

Ask Willie Nolan ’69 about his time at Christian Brothers High School and he will tell you that although most of his memories involve playing sports surrounded by grammar school friends, his fondest memories were formed in the classroom. “I was fortunate to have gone to Christian Brothers. The Brothers, teachers, coaches and friends have had a lifelong impact on me,” says Willie. For both Willie ’69 and Sheila, CB has become much more than just a high school experience, but a lifelong passion. As graduates of Christian Brothers and Loretto high schools, they understand firsthand the importance and significance of attending a Catholic high school. When the time came to send their four children, W.R. Theodore ’94, Katherine ’96, Stephen ’01 and Elizabeth ’05 to high school, there was little question of where they would attend. “Our children each have their own unique personalities and interests,” explains Sheila. “At CB, they each had a diverse high school experience that met their individual needs and expectations. The common thread for all of them was that CB provided them with what they needed to be successful in college and beyond. The teachers and administrators genuinely care about the students as individuals and want to help them succeed and become all they can be! Their dedication inspires me to help continue the legacy and mission of Christian Brothers.” “As great as the school was when I attended, it has become even better now,” explains Willie. “The addition of young women to the student body in 1990, the growth of the school, academically and spiritually, and its continued dedication to the Lasallian Catholic mission make it the wonderful and nurturing place that it is today.” Willie and Sheila have worn countess hats at CB including enthusiastic volunteers, event sponsors, donors and parents. Willie served on the Board of Trustees for six years, two of those as chair, providing leadership and guidance at a time when the school was developing its current campus master plan.

The pair has generously and proudly supported the school financially for more than 30 years. When asked why, they say there are many reasons which all lead back to the strength of CB as both a school and a business. “I credit much of CB’s current success to Lorcan Barnes’s business-savvy leadership, the dedication of the board of trustees, and the generosity of the school’s supporters. CB has been able to sustain significant growth and improvement, including new facilities and academic programs. None of that would have been possible without the school being in a financially stable position with passionate donors and allies.” Sheila recognizes the many gifts and opportunities provided to students that would not be possible without the support of donors. “I am touched by the opportunity students have to

Jennifer Makol, Br. Dan Morgan, FSC, Troy Bird ’82

learn in fantastic classrooms, study engineering and perform in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center. So many aspects of the campus are truly gifts to our students that would not be possible without financial stability.” Splitting their time between Chicago, IL, and Sacramento does not stop Willie and Sheila from continuing their involvement with Christian Brothers. Willie will be serving as chairman of the upcoming capital campaign aimed at achieving the 15-year vision for the school. “Willie and Sheila Nolan are known for being ‘CB cheerleaders’, always promoting the school to everyone they meet, especially their neighbors,” says John Nunan, board of trustees chair. “They have been our friends and neighbors for over thirty

years. We attribute our longtime connection to Christian Brothers High School directly to them and we are truly grateful.” “Willie and Sheila make a profound difference in the lives of young people through their support of Christian Brothers High School,” says Lorcan Barnes, president. “Their ongoing support of tuition assistance has made it possible for children to attend CB who would otherwise not have that opportunity. Their support of our Building on the Tradition campaigns ensures that our students have the facilities essential to discover and develop their God-given gifts. We are incredibly blessed to honor such deserving people as the 2016 Ambassadors of the Year.”

Michelle La Sala ’98 Helps Falcon 5K Fly FALCON 5K 2016 & 2017

Michelle La Sala ’98 has always been passionate about running. As a CB student, La Sala ran cross country and track under the direction of Danny Delgado ’79, going on to race at the NCAA Division 1 level for the University of Portland.

She returned to CB in 2009 and 2010, reuniting with Coach Delgado to coach cross country for the Falcons. In all, she has completed 27 marathons and holds a 2:59 personal best race time, even competing in the infamous 2013 Boston Marathon. Recently, she ran in the Berlin Marathon, a premier race for top runners around the world. Needless to say, she was born to run. La Sala even made a career for herself out of running, working in race management for the past 12 years on events including the Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco marathons, before starting her own race management company, Blistering Pace Race Management, in April 2016. So when CB came up with the idea to organize a 5K, Michelle La Sala’s name naturally emerged. “I got involved with the Falcon 5K through Nancy Smith-Fagan and Dennis Zilaff ’71. I met with Nancy in the fall of 2015 about the idea of organizing a CB 5K , and then it just came alive…,” says La Sala. Coincidentally, La Sala was working on getting Blistering Pace Race Management up and running, making the Falcon 5K the perfect test race. After months of meeting and preparation, the first Falcon 5K was held at William Land Park on April 2, 2016. In its first year, the event drew over 600 participants, raising $14,589 for CB student activities and programs. La Sala is thrilled with the event’s turnout and believes it is a great start for a brand new tradition with the potential for major growth, “Having 600 participants for a first-time 5K race is great! It shows the event’s potential for growth and interest of the community.” “This event would not have been possible with Michelle’s help and expertise! She jumped right in and showed us where to start to get the event off and running. We are honored to be one of Blistering Pace Race Management’s

first official events and we look forward to a long-term partnership. Michelle truly demonstrates what it means to 'Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve' by utilizing her strengths and talents to support the CB community,” says Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement. La Sala continues giving back to her alma-mater because of the passion she discovered as a CB student and the support she felt from the school community, “What motivates me to support Christian Brothers and the Falcon 5K is that CB holds a very special place in my heart. As a runner at Christian Brothers, I was a section champion and 10th in the state in cross country. I had so much support for my accomplishments from classmates, teachers and

Connie, Mack '20 & Sophie '17 Emerson

administrators. It has been especially motivating to me in recent years to see how many people from CB have become runners themselves. It has been great to reconnect with people through running and at local races. To present running as a fun way to be healthy and involved, a way to support a cause that is important to you, and a way to promote community, not only at Christian Brothers, but within the greater Sacramento area and the running community, it is truly a win-win. I can’t think of a race I’d rather be involved with from the start than the CB Falcon 5K!” She has high hopes for next year’s event and hopes to get more CB alumni and their families involved in the race, “I am looking forward

Kaylee Barnes

to next year’s event and seeing the race get even bigger and better. I really want to see more alumni out there running. We had so many students and their families, but I think alumni could add another level of CB spirit and pride. My hope is the Falcon 5K becomes one of those traditional CB events that everyone marks on their calendar annually and attends in a big group.”

Mark your calendars for the 2017 Falcon 5K on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in William Land Park! More information will be available on the CB website in January 2017.

CB Alumna Revamps KBFT Studio Over the summer, the KBFT Studio received a major set makeover thanks to Mina Mohhaddes ’09. Mohaddes, a graduate of Loyola Marymount University, works in Los Angeles as a production designer and production assistant on television and digital projects for companies like Home Depot, Facebook, Buick, Priceline, and more. She also serves as production assistant for major award shows like the Teen Choice Awards, Emmys, and American Music Awards. She has been fortunate enough to work on the Grammy Awards three years in a row and it is her favorite project to work on each year. Mohaddes credits her ability to juggle many tasks and projects to the time she spent at CB, “Being in set production requires being a ‘Jane of all trades’, something which I certainly started doing back at CB as KBFT executive producer, student council

rally chair and honor student. The diversity of opportunity and challenge at CB paved the way for me to excel as a multi-tasker who would not confine or limit myself. It allowed me to challenge myself to work hard and set my standards for the quality I demand from myself. My work ethic has not gone unnoticed in my profession and it is the reason I have come so far. Thank you to Mr. Hogan ’95 and Mr. Capogreco ’86, as well as my many other wonderful teachers who challenged me to be creative and work harder. I would not be where I am today without their influence!”
