FALCON FAMILY NEWS

Dear Families:

As Lasallian educators, we often look to the writings of our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, for guidance and inspiration “Take care that your school runs well,” wrote De La Salle in a 1709 letter to Br Robert, who was leading a school in France As President of Christian Brothers High School, I am ever mindful of this simple, but profound statement and take seriously my role as a steward of Lasallian Catholic education in Sacramento. Fortunately, I am not in this alone.

Our community is served by dedicated administrators, faculty members, and staff whose commitment to outstanding academics and enriching co-curricular activities is resolute CB is blessed with dedicated volunteers whose time, energy and talents support the school through our Lasallian Parent Ambassadors, our New York, New York! Auction Committee, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging endeavors, our Alumni Engagement Committee, and the La Salle Club just to name a few. Collectively, these groups all work tremendously hard to ensure that our school runs well and by doing so, assist us in ensuring that CB is the place to be and belong for our students

We recognize that you make tremendous sacrifices to send your children to Christian Brothers. Our constant challenge is balancing mission-centered excellence with affordability. Please know that we work hard to invest your resources well in your children’s education and consider this a sacred partnership

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Recently, the Board of Trustees approved an operating budget which calls for an increase in tuition of 4.75% percent. As such, tuition will be $16,365 and the registration fee is set for $785 for the 2024-25 school year While this is greater than our typical increase, we are not immune to the rising costs of goods and services impacting us all Much time and effort are directed at ensuring that increases are minimized to the extent possible with great attention placed on tracking inflation and economic factors affecting families.

We recognize our tuition is a significant sacrifice for most families We also recognize that it is prohibitive for some families Our Lasallian Catholic mission calls for us to ensure that a Christian Brothers education is available and accessible to families at all income levels We embrace this opportunity.

In 2023-24, we are distributing $3 4 million to 455 students, approximately 40 percent of our student body We expect these numbers to be similar in 2024-25 Tuition assistance comes from three sources: endowment earnings, fundraising efforts, and the operating budget. We are grateful to all of our alumni and parents who support our fundraising activities. Your ongoing support is critical to our mission!

De La Salle also said “To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God ”

Thank you for entrusting us with the “gift” of your children. We are working diligently to ensure that the sacrifices you are making for your children today – tuition, time, and example – will reap rewards long into the future

FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

Highlighting our College Counseling and Wellness Programs

Christian Brothers High School has the most robust Counseling Program of any private school in the region and our College Counseling and Wellness Programs are perfect examples of the excellent programs available to our students. In the Wellness Program, we are very fortunate to have two Wellness Counselors in our department for over a decade to better serve the emotional needs of our students. Mrs. Emily McDougall, in her ninth year at CB and Mrs. Juanita Patterson ‘81, in her second year at CB. Both wellness counselors see many students across all grade levels who seek out help in everything from anxiety and depression to substance use, eating issues, coping with stress and grief They also go into the classrooms throughout the year offering presentations about Wellness, which involve the whole person (physical, emotional, academic, social, intellectual, environmental, and of course, spiritual) and also offer small group support on the topics of Stress Management and Social Support Mrs McDougall sends out her insightful “Wellness Wednesday” message to our students and families via Schoology They even offer virtual services via their “Virtual Calming Room” that can be found here and their one-of-a-kind Virtual Wellness Center that offers meditations, visual relaxation, yoga, prayer, music, and creative activities along with the ability for students to sign up for in-person sessions via the website They are truly invaluable to our entire school community and offer tremendous expertise and care for all of our students.

The CB College Counseling duo of Ms. Melissa McClellan and Mrs. April Melarkey are outstanding resources for any or all topics related to college advising. You would be hard-pressed to find two experts that know each other so well and work so tirelessly for our entire CB community. No stone goes unturned in their practice as they can be found in-person for one-on-one sessions, on the stage giving packed-house presentations, in the classroom giving college advising sessions, virtually in Morning Coffee Meet-Ups, and on the lawn for College Fairs. They have years-long relationships with representatives of colleges all over the country and stay up-to-date in all topics related to college advising. Our reputation as the “Place to Be” stays intact under their watchful eyes in college counseling! Please join our entire community in our shared gratitude for these outstanding programs and everything they do to make the CB Counseling Program the premier program in the region
