FALCON FAMILY NEWS CB IS THE PLACE TO BE AN ARTIST DEAR FAMILIES: “Things are unpredictable, and we don’t know what the future holds. But every day that we get to be together doing what we love is a gift. So, we’re going to take it one day at a time.” This was the message of director Michael D. Jackson to the cast of our fall musical, “Call Me Madam,” on the first day of rehearsal. After three semesters without a live production, we were hoping to be in front of audiences once again, but even that was uncertain. The pandemic and hybrid learning tested the resolve and creativity of all our teachers and student artists. Ceramics teacher Rob Boriskin sent loads of clay home with kids to roll and shape on kitchen counters, choral students recorded their voices individually so director Christian Bohm could edit them together for a virtual concert, and theatre went old school with radio productions. And though I couldn’t be prouder of how our entire CB Arts community rose to the challenge, the thrill of making art together on campus again has been euphoric. I walk into my office in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center to the sound of songs from the Star Wars films emanating from the band room. I cross the Main Lawn where KBFT students are filming video segments for broadcast. The work of the visual arts students is on display in a brand-new case by the Learning Commons. And I will never forget the whoop of joy from the cast when we were informed that, thanks to CB’s phenomenal weekly COVID-19 testing efforts, we would be able to perform without face masks. The heart of a Lasallian school is shared community experience. De La Salle and the Brothers made an intentional choice to do their work “together and by association.” And though I’ve spent 12 years of my life at CB, I’ve never felt the profound gift of togetherness in quite the way I feel it this year. From the administrators who have worked so hard to provide the testing, equipment, and procedures that keep us healthy, to the parent volunteers who graciously give their time in service to the school, to my colleagues who attend shows and concerts after a long day of teaching in support of their beloved students,

and the broader community who put up with the discomfort of face masks while on campus so that we can safely be together, everyone has pitched in to keep us doing what we love. Words can’t express my gratitude. Thank you for supporting our school, our students, and the Arts, one day at a time. With heartfelt thanks,

Heather Christianson ‘01 Technical Director, George Cunningham ‘40 Performing Arts Center Performing Arts Teacher

Pre-Registration For 2022-2023 Classes

CIF Academic Awards

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be working on pre-registration for the next school year with their counselors during February and online pre-registration will be open from February 28 to 8:00 a.m. on March 11. This process allows Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, Ms. Pickren, and the department chairs an opportunity to begin building the master schedule with the proper number of course sections. Students should be looking ahead to their post-secondary plans when trying to decide which courses to take next year and beyond. The counselors encourage students to think about challenging themselves academically, but with courses that they can be successful in (C’s or better). Teachers are also highly involved with the process of recommending the proper courses for students to take. Look for the pre-registration materials students will have after counselor classroom visits and use the Course Catalog (under the Academic section of the website).

Class of 2022 College Information Seniors are finishing college applications and are now in a “holding pattern,” anxiously awaiting word on whether they are admitted into their colleges. If parents have any questions, they should contact Ms. Melissa McClellan or Mrs. April Melarkey. Seniors should make sure that they turn in any college acceptances and/or scholarships to the counselors by the April 1 deadline for the Graduation Program.

Class of 2023 College Information Juniors have begun meeting individually with College Counselors, Ms. McClellan and Mrs. Melarkey, to learn about what is involved in the college planning process. They are looking over their transcripts, talking about SAT and ACT tests, performing college searches, and talking about summer programs, in addition to asking any other questions that they have at this point. Juniors are also encouraged to update their Personal Bio/Activities & Achievements on Scoir, enter potential colleges into the “Following” section under My Colleges, and complete the Career Profile.

Sophomore Academic Planning Night Students and parents of the Class of 2024 are virtually invited to attend Sophomore Parent Academic Planning Night on Wednesday, February 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Pre-registration and early college planning are two topics that will be addressed.

The women’s cross country team was awarded the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section Fall Academic Champion Award for the 2021 season. This Academic Championship award is a great way to finish the season for our cross country Falcons. Three other fall CB teams were also in the top five in the section GPAs for their sport: football, women’s tennis, and women’s water polo. Congratulations to all!

LASALLIAN STUDENT LIFE OFFICE Prayer Service The January Omicron surge brought with it much anxiety and many challenges. A few LSLO events were postponed to later months to ensure the health and safety of our CB community. We have hope that this too shall pass, and February will be filled with exciting events that bring our community great joy. To commence the final winter month of the school year, the Black Student Union and Asian Cultural Alliance will host a Prayer Service on Tuesday, February 1. Accompanied by the talented Honors Chorale class, the two clubs will lead us in celebrating Black History Month and Lunar New Year in a moving live-streamed service.

Junior Retreat Also on February 1, a group of 11th graders will depart for the first Junior Retreat of the school year. The title of the overnight retreat, “Journey,” is reflective of their time and activities during this experience. Juniors will explore how they have reached their current relationship with God and themselves. By pondering the many twists, turns, joys and challenges of their journey, they can find a way to move forward in their faith and life goals. Due to the pandemic, this will be the first retreat for many of our students. We are very excited to offer this meaningful and communal experience for juniors.

Valentine Dance Homecoming was such a hit that the LSLO can’t resist hosting another dance for our movers and shakers! Weather permitting, our Valentine Dance will be held outside on Saturday, February 5, once again with DJ Justified. Once we know that the weather will cooperate for an outdoor event, ticket sales will be announced. Out of an abundance of caution for the health of our community, only CB students may purchase tickets and attend this event.

$1 during all lunches from February 7-11. The sweets and treats will be distributed to their Valentines on February 14, bringing lots of warm fuzzies to our CB community!

VENAVER While our first in-person VENAVER was unfortunately canceled due to the COVID-19 surge, we look to the future with high hopes. Our second VENAVER will take place in Los Angeles. 11 CB students will accompany Mr. Paul Havey and Ms. Catherine Shackelford on this formative experience from February 27 through March 5. While in LA, students will visit Homeboy and Homegirl Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. In addition, VENAVER participants will volunteer at the Guadalupe Homeless Project and the Catholic Worker. Connections to our Lasallian family will be strengthened with a visit to Cathedral High School for Ash Wednesday Mass and lunch. Please keep this special group and all those they meet on this journey in your prayers.

SALT Diaper Drive More exciting events bloom in spring, starting with the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home Diaper Drive - another SALT Falcon Drive we are eager to support. Diapers are a necessity that all young children deserve. Please consider aiding our cause on Saturday, March 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The flier shows diaper assignments for classes, faculty, staff, and alumni. The LSLO thanks you for your encouragement and support throughout our upcoming events!

Freshmen Retreats Our two Freshman Retreats of the school year were rescheduled for Wednesdays, February 9 and February 16 at Sacramento State’s Newman Catholic Center. “Becoming,” CB students’ first experience in our comprehensive retreat program, encourages our freshmen to observe their own goodness and who they are becoming as they navigate high school life. Our 9th graders will explore their connection with the Lasallian community and new identities as part of the CB family. All freshmen will attend one of these two mandatory retreats determined by their freshman religion class set.

Valentines One can’t think of February without also thinking of Cupid’s ow and arrow. In order to help our students celebrate their love and friendship for one another, Student Council will sell Valentine themed candy grams and mini teddy bears for
