JANUARY 2024 SPRING SEMESTER
CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL • ENTER TO LEARN, LEAVE TO SERVE
FALCON FAMILY NEWS “The star did not appear to the Magi in vain, for this sight caused them to receive the grace of God, and it made the day a day of salvation for them because they showed themselves most faithful to the divine inspiration. Are we attentive to the inspirations we receive from God?” Meditation 96.1, St. John Baptist de la Salle Happy New Year Falcon Family! I pray that you have had a wonderful Christmas break full of new memories, and hopefully some time to relax and rejuvenate in preparation for the new year. As I reflect on the past semester, I am full of gratitude for the genuine expression of welcome I have felt as the new principal. There have been so many moments of joy, a few moments of pain, and always opportunities to grow. I had always admired from a distance the beauty of the Christian Brothers community, and having now experiencing it firsthand, I am so grateful to have been called to be a member of this Lasallian family. As we prepare for the Feast of the Epiphany, St. John Baptist de la Salle reminds us that we can learn from the Magi, who trusted and followed the star to the manager to be inspired by an infant, who is our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Like the Magi, we must trust and be attentive to inspirations we receive from God so that we can become the person God created us to be.
A Message From the Principal
What inspiration might God be providing to you as we enter this new year? Is there a call to try a new activity, jump into a new service opportunity, maybe explore a new academic subject when you register for classes next year? Whatever it maybe, know that we are all encouraged to pay attention to the way God is moving in our lives, and how He is calling us to continue to push ourselves, expand our horizons, and find new ways to serve one another. We are eager to welcome you all back to campus for the start of what will be a fantastic semester of learning, growing, cheering on teams and performances, picking colleges for our Seniors, and so many other exciting memories to be made. There is never a dull moment on our campus, and we invite you all to jump in to share your gifts and talents and to make the very most of our time together! Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

News From the Counseling Department ATTENTION SENIORS AND PARENTS: Please remember to turn in copies of your admission decisions and scholarship letters to Cynthia Grajeda, Melissa McClellan, or April Melarkey, in the Counseling Center as you receive them. It is also very important that students update their “admission status” on Scoir. CLASS CHANGES: Students interested in class changes should see their grade-level counselor directly to pick up a pink Class-Change Form. PRE-PREGISTRATION FOR 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR: In January, grade-level counselors will be making their way into social studies classrooms to meet with their students and discuss pre-registration details for the 2024-25 school year. More details will come to you directly from the grade-level counselor. Parents, if your child has D's or F's on his/her report card, PLEASE READ the following: The CB Parent/Student Handbook emphasizes that "F's" and "D's" are bad news on report cards! It is important for you and your student to understand that neither "D's" nor "F's" are acceptable. “F” grades must be repeated for credit to graduate from Christian Brothers High School. “D” grades, though worth 5 credits towards graduation, are NOT accepted by four-year colleges and universities. All California State University campuses, University of California campuses, and most private institutions require a “C” or above in ALL core courses (core courses are approved History, English, Math, Lab Science, World Language, Visual and Performing Art, and Elective courses - also known as the "a-g" list of approved courses - see the chart on the following page for requirements. If students have “D’s” on the transcript in any a-g courses and do not remediate them, they are not eligible to apply for admission to CSU and UC, and therefore are seriously limiting their choices for college. If your child would like to keep his/her options open and remain eligible to apply to a four-year college, the Counseling Department highly recommends that he/she remediate (repeat for credit) any “D” grades earned in a-g approved courses. Students may enroll in a variety of classes during the 2024 CBHS Summer School session to remediate a grade. While previous grades are never removed from a student’s transcript, if a student completes the course in summer school with a “C” or above, his/her transcript will reflect the new credits and the new grade will be used when calculating the grade point average. For example, if your child is currently enrolled in Biology and received a “D” the first semester, he/she should consider repeating Biology this summer. If he/she is currently enrolled in a math course or foreign language course and received a low grade the first semester (D or F), it is important to receive a “C” or above at the end of the spring semester. CSU and UC will “validate” (count as successful) the whole year of a math course or a world language course if the student shows marked improvement the second semester (i.e., goes from a “D” to a “C”, “B”, or “A”). Therefore, students have a choice – work very hard this semester in math and/or world language and bring the grade up or repeat it in summer school or next school year to raise the grade. Since a full four years of English is a basic requirement for eligibility to a 4-year college, any "D's" in English should be remediated in the summer. One year of World History is the minimum requirement for eligibility, so students should be sure to have a "C" or above for at least two of the four semesters of Frosh/Soph World History. Any US History "D's" should also be remediated. Please contact your child’s grade-level counselor if you have questions about remediating grades. The grade-level counselor will also be reaching out to you at the start of this 3rd quarter with official recommendations for summer school if needed. This notice will include recommendations but also requirements if the Fall grade was at a certain mark and the class cannot be remediated with even a higher grade in the Spring. If you intend to register for summer school, registration will be available on-line. Check the CB website for further information.

Arts Update
CB Theatre Showcase: Senior Adam Sunderman ’24 has written an original one act play, Kitty Hawk that will debut at the CB Theatre Showcase along with monologues, scenes and songs performed by our most advanced theatre students. All of these pieces are bound for the Lenaea High School theatre festival where they will be performed for high school theatre students from across the west coast and adjudicated by theatre professionals. The festival takes place at the Harris Center in Folsom on February 2-4, but you can catch all of our performances in one night at the Theatre Showcase on February 9 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are just $5 and are available on the Ticket Hub. Spring Play Auditions: Auditions are coming up quick for our spring play, 12 Angry Jurors. This drama is a gripping examination of the jurist process in a murder trial, raising questions about what it means to be tried by a jury of peers and the responsibilities and motives of the citizens in the jury box. Auditions will be held February 6 and 7 from 3:15-5:30 in the theatre. There is no need to prepare a monologue- just show up! Email mjackson@cbhs-sacramento.org with questions. You can also join the Schoology group “Twelve Angry Jurors” with code CF5B-ZWBK-XT2G8.
