FALCON FAMILY NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR FAMILIES: I write this letter after having had the blessing of spending a little time outside today during lunch. The sun was shining, music was playing, two spirited games of Spikeball were in progress, and a football was being tossed around…it was truly like something out of a movie…a beautiful moment. One of the students even commented “This really feels like a scene out of High School Musical!” To see this spiritually, ethnically, racially, and economically diverse group of young people outside on the green grass, bright blue sky, laughing, talking, playing, belonging…it was truly a vision of Christ’s kingdom on Earth.
In the meantime, thank you for entrusting us with your sons and daughters. We are working diligently to ensure that the sacrifices you are making for your children today – tuition, time, and example – will reap rewards long into the future. Live Jesus in our hearts.
Crystal LeRoy, Ed.M. President
Thank you for the blessing of your children. We recognize that you make tremendous sacrifices to send them to Christian Brothers High School. Our constant challenge is balancing mission-centered excellence with affordability. Recently, the Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase of 3.5 percent ($509). Tuition for 2022-23 will be $15,059 and the registration fee will remain $725 for a total of $15,784. While our tuition remains below the average for Catholic high schools in Northern California, we recognize this is significant. Please know that we work hard to thoughtfully invest your resources in your children’s education and work hard to improve efficiency, maintain distinction, and control costs. This increase allows us to attract, retain, and compensate the best educators while providing our students with an effective learning environment and outstanding programs. We recognize our tuition is a sacrifice for most families. We also recognize that it is prohibitive for some families. Our Lasallian Catholic mission calls for us to serve the poor while also ensuring that CB is accessible to modest and middle-income families. In 2021-22, we are distributing $3.3 million in need-based tuition assistance to 444 students. That is 39 percent of our student body. We expect these numbers to be similar in 2022-23. Tuition assistance comes from three sources: endowment earnings, fundraising efforts, and the operating budget. We are grateful to all of our parents, alumni and friends who support our fundraising activities. Ongoing support is critical to our mission! As such, I hope to see many of you at the annual auction on Saturday, March 19. We’re Off to the Races for what we pray will be our most successful fundraiser to date. This fun-filled, spirited event is critical in supporting tuition assistance and student programs.

COUNSELING Highlighting our Wellness Program At Christian Brothers High School, we have been very fortunate to have a dedicated Wellness Counselor in our department for over a decade to better serve the emotional needs of our students. Mrs. Emily McDougall, in her seventh year at CB, sees many students across all grade levels who seek out help in everything from anxiety and depression to substance use, eating issues, and coping with stress and grief. She also goes into the classrooms throughout the year offering presentations about wellness, which involve the whole person (physical, emotional, academic, social, intellectual, environmental, and of course, spiritual). In this time of COVID-19, we are especially grateful for the support Mrs. McDougall has been able to offer our students. She regularly checks the “Emotions” Survey on the Safely app and makes proactive contact with students who shared feelings of sadness, depression, or anxiety. Along with her in-person sessions with students, Mrs. McDougall has been putting out “Wellness Wednesday” messages to our students and families via Schoology and email, offering support with opportunities for self-care, reflection, mindfulness exercises, and coping mechanisms. She also instituted our “Virtual Calming Room” that can be found at this link and offers meditations, visual relaxation, yoga, prayer, music, and creative activities. Mrs. McDougall also covers topics including self-care, social media, substance use and abuse, and transitioning to adulthood. Each month, there is a wellness theme that includes compassion, awareness, gratitude, motivation, and inclusion. She is a licensed MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) who has been in private practice for many years working with teens and parents. We feel very blessed to have her. If you have any questions for Mrs. McDougall, she can be reached at 916-7333688 or emcdougall@cbhs-sacramento.org.
Pre-Registration 2022-23 The Counseling Department would like to ask you to please go over your student’s future courses with them before the registration period closes on Friday, March 11 at 11:00 p.m. This will ensure everyone is on the same page and require less changes over the summer. Counselors have finished meeting with students in the classroom and they have received a Class Registration Planning Sheet. All students will be completing pre-registration through PowerSchool from Monday, February 28 through Sunday, March 11. Students may log in to make changes as many times as necessary throughout that time period and must log into the PowerSchool website and not use the iPad app. Specific directions will be sent to students via Schoology.
Course Catalog is available on the CB website under the “Academics” section. Summer School information and registration links are also live and available on the CB website under “Academics.” Counselors will be available to students at lunch outside of the Learning Commons to answer pre-registration questions or complete on the spot registration in PowerSchool during pre-registration dates. Additional questions may be directed to the appropriate grade-level counselor or the college counselors.

“Quest” Sophomore Retreats This month, the sophomores will be attending their one-day mandatory retreat for the entire sophomore class. The retreat is called “Quest” and gives sophomores the opportunity to reflect on their values and choices thoughtfully and prayerfully, and how these values influence the most important choices that they make. The sophomore retreats have been split into two days to cater to two halves of the class. Students will be assigned according to their religion class and will have to attend on either Monday, March 21 or Tuesday, March 22. The retreats are led by the LSLO and the Senior Retreat Leadership Team.
