FALCON FAMILY NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT “To touch the hearts and minds of your pupils and to inspire them with the Christian spirit is the greatest miracle you can perform and one God expects of you.” – St. John Baptist de La Salle DEAR FAMILIES: May 15 marks the Solemnity of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the De La Salle Brothers), and patron saint of teachers. Lasallian schools throughout the world celebrate the occasion, also known as Founder’s Day, with masses, student activities, and more. At Christian Brothers High School, we will be marking the occasion throughout the week with a Founder’s Mass, recognizing the school’s Lasallian Educator of the Year honoree, and festive celebrations for our students, faculty, and staff. It is incredible that what began so humbly more than 300 years ago in France, continues today in 80 countries, educating approximately 1 million students. In Sacramento, we are profoundly blessed to be thriving as the area’s largest, most diverse, and longest-thriving Catholic high school. And, as the idiom goes, time flies when you’re having fun! I cannot believe we are just weeks away from completing the school’s 146th year. Having joined the CB community in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have marveled at the dedication of our faculty and staff, and am in awe of the resilience, hard work, and spirit of our students. This year of navigating the challenges and evolving protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic has also marked an incredible return to the many activities and milestones and mark a year in the life of Christian Brothers High School: Holy Bowl, Holy Court, Homecoming, Open House, class retreats, Kairos retreats, Valentine’s Day hearts, concerts, theatre performances, prayer services, Masses, Earth Fest, Upper Division Ball, and so much more. At the end of the month, we return to commencement celebrations including Baccalaureate Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and graduation at the Memorial Auditorium. I am grateful to all of you who joined in on the important work of Educational Visioning. Your efforts and insight have been critical as we create a five-year strategic plan for the school that ensures the sustainability of Lasallian Catholic education in Sacramento. Many of you also participated in Challenge Success endeavors to
inform our work in increasing student well-being and academic engagement. Thank you for your discernment and care. To all of you who joined the Parent Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee, please know that your time, energy, and foresight truly enhance our efforts to bring our Lasallian Catholic mission to life and help ensure that we continue to learn, grow, and truly live our Lasallian Core Principles of Inclusive Community and Respect for All Persons (see page 4 update). Yes, this has been an incredible year. I am profoundly blessed to serve the Christian Brothers High School community and see firsthand the miracles that transpire when teachers reach the hearts and minds of our students. Thank you for entrusting us with the sacred responsibility of preparing your sons and daughters for success in college and life. Live Jesus in our hearts!

COUNSELING Summer is Still a Time for Action The counselors would like to remind students and parents that summertime is a good time to continue college planning and academic preparation. Studies have continued to show that students who are involved in structured, productive activities in the summer are less likely to engage in at-risk behaviors. Busy, involved, goal-oriented students who are working on academic pursuits, athletics, a summer job, community service or enrichment activities are better prepared for the rest of high school and for college. In addition to the many external summer program opportunities available, consider CB’s own Summer School Program. There are also several other things that students should be doing this summer: All Students: Remember to spend time this summer completing your summer reading assignments!!! Freshmen: Log into your Scoir account and update your Profile (Resume). Sophomores: Update your Profile (Resume) and complete You Science assessments in Scoir. Utilize Khan Academy’s online SAT prep and the online ACT Academy to start preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT in October. See the Counseling web page to find out about College Summer Programs. Juniors: A checklist of reminders... May/June • Start prepping for the SAT by utilizing Khan Academy’s online test prep and for the ACT by utilizing ACT Online Prep for schools that require the exams or may be test optional. • Plan for a challenging senior year. If you want to make course changes other than what you pre-registered for, please contact Mrs. Gormley. • Update your Resume on Scoir and finish any other suggested activities. Summer • Complete summer “homework” for college admission (distributed soon by Ms. McClellan and Mrs. Melarkey and is on the Class of 2023 Schoology Page) – This is due the first day of school in August! • Check commonapp.org and other college admissions websites for dates when colleges begin accepting applications (the Common App opens over the summer and the UC App will open August 1). • Start checking out financial aid and scholarship resources and continue this throughout the summer. Try www.fastweb.com or www.finaid.org. Next fall will be very busy with your classes, college applications and other activities that you are participating in, so “downtime” in the summer is the perfect time to seek out these opportunities. • Begin drafting your college essay (part of your summer “homework”). • Log into Scoir to research colleges and career opportunities and visit colleges if you can. • Do something extraordinary! Try a summer program on a
college campus (we have a list on the Counseling web page), work at a job, or complete a service activity. Seniors: A checklist of reminders... May • You must submit your acceptance (“Statement of Intent to Register”) to the college you have chosen to attend by May 1. • Congratulate yourself and finish strong! • Go to Family Connection by 8:00 am on May 2 and list the colleges where you were admitted and where you have decided to enroll. • Fill out college housing forms and pay careful attention to deadlines concerning housing deposits, etc. • Write “thanks, but no thanks” letters to colleges you will not attend. Emailing them is okay. Ask Ms. McClellan or Mrs. Melarkey for directions on how to do this if you don’t already know how. • Click here to order your final transcript for college. June • Make sure you have responded to all requests from your college of choice. • Don’t forget to thank your teachers, counselors, the registrar, etc. for all of their help over the past four years!
Important Reminders for Students who Receive ‘D’ or ‘F’ Semester Grades • All semester F’s must be remediated during the summer in Christian Brothers’ Summer School program. • Any semester F’s by seniors will cause you to not receive the CB diploma you have worked for over the past four years. • Semester D’s could put a student in jeopardy of not being eligible for four-year colleges and universities immediately after high school. We strongly suggest that D’s be remediated in the summer! (If you have any questions regarding the need for taking these courses or the consequences of not taking them, please see the Course Catalog on the school website and/or contact your child’s grade-level counselor).
CB’s Summer School Program Provides Excellent Options for Students Our summer school program at CB provides excellent opportunities to accelerate a student’s curriculum goals or to provide schedule relief next year and allow for a study hall one or both semesters. Please view the courses that will be offered this summer on the school website or see your counselor to discuss your options.
Counseling Issues Arising Over the Summer All counselors (grade-level, college and wellness) will be accessible by email should any issues arise that require counseling and/or an outside referral. Feel free to reach out to us. We want to continue to help our students and parents during the summer break.

DEIB PARENT COMMITTEE UPDATE
Please Note the Following Important Information Concerning the Upcoming Athletic Year:
Last spring, Dr. LeRoy invited all CB parents to join a new CB Parent Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Committee to help ensure that CB is not only the place to be, but the place to belong for all students. Since then, we have grown into a group of about 20 parents who meet regularly with Dr. LeRoy and senior administrators. We also partner with the Adult (staff) DEIB Committee and DISC, the student DEIB Committee. We hope this update encourages all interested parents to join us in this important work!
• All athletes must have the FinalForms athletic medical clearance with a valid physical prior to any participation in summer athletics. To find the FinalForms information, please visit the CB website. An email will be sent to all families regarding how to register for the 2022-2023 school year. • Ms. Melissa Flowers is taking on the role of Co-Athletic Director. This change is a testament to Ms. Flowers’ hard work as Assistant Athletic Director and the strong partnership Mr. Dale Milton and her have built over these past three years. She is a wonderful asset to the school and her dedication shows in all that she does. Together, as co-directors, they will continue to work to ensure Integrity, Honor, and Excellence in athletics and appreciate your support of our more than 600 student athletes.

STAY CONNECTED!
This year, we have adopted a vision statement, and identified multiple ways that parents can help us achieve our goals through three subcommittees. Our Outreach and Engagement subcommittee will encourage broad family and student voice through communications, conversations and events that share perspectives and increase our collective knowledge of how to be a truly diverse, inclusive and equitable community. We will also use our connections to the Oak Park community and Sacramento to identify opportunities for increased partnership and collaboration. Our Needs Assessment and Data Management subcommittee will work with the administration to analyze existing information and gather additional data about how well CB is living up to our Lasallian Core Principles. We will also support the Dean’s Office to create a data tracking system and benchmarks so we can all be confident that DEIB issues and incidents are addressed effectively, consistently, equitably and transparently, in keeping with appropriate confidentiality. Our Policies and Systems subcommittee is focused on bringing parents’ professional expertise to support CB administrators and staff in areas such as updating policies and procedures to accurately and clearly describe expectations, consequences, and supports for students, staff and families. We will also support CB staff to create systems that address the important issues of mental health and wellbeing that are so connected to belonging. We know that all CB families share our commitment to being a school that truly embodies respect for all persons, inclusive community, and social justice. For more information on how you can get involved, please contact Assistant Principal Julian Elorduy at jelorduy@cbhs-sacramento.org. And stay tuned as we will be regularly sharing information and opportunities!
