FALCON FAMILY NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LASALLIAN STUDENT LIFE “Pay attention my young friends, to go against the current; this is good for the heart.” – Pope Francis, Confirmation Mass at St. Peter’s Square, April 28, 2013 DEAR FAMILIES: During our Homecoming Prayer Service in October, we reflected on the theme of seasons changing. This theme is very fitting as we continue to navigate the transformations that have occurred within our lives. As we reflect on these changes, what allows us to keep looking forward is the gratitude in knowing that although sometimes changes can be hard, they work for the good of the people and the community. The experience of “Koinonia” that is so important is constant here at CB. The Greek term, “Koinonia,” is found throughout the Bible and is used in Christian Theology. It is defined as an experience of fellowship and joint participation where everyone contributes and collaborates. As “koinonia,” we are the body of believers that share in the life of the Christian world as disciples among one another and our Lord. We are a community, we are CB. As Director of the Lasallian Student Life Office (LSLO), it is a boundless joy to experience the collaboration of students, faculty and staff members who have worked so hard to ensure that this year is as normal as possible. Since returning to school, we have had to modify many of our co-curricular activities and events so that we can provide safe, fun, and meaningful experiences for our students. In a homily by Pope Francis in April 2013, he encourages young people to “swim against the tide.” How we have risen to the occasion!

Drive last month where we collected donations for animals in shelters affected by the CA wildfires. SALT also meets weekly to help provide services and bring fulfillment to the Oak Park community. These events are a few of the many reasons why CB is the place to be, and it has been an honor to lead its charge. I am amazed every day at the drive and commitment each person in our CB community has given to the school and the Koinonia that is experienced daily here at CB. Each day, it is a joy to see students embracing our school motto, realizing what it means to “enter to learn, leave to serve.” In the Lasallian Student Life Office, we are grateful to provide a space for students to serve their CB community. Live Jesus in our Hearts Forever!

Jerome Baybayan Director of Lasallian Student Life

Guided by our LSLO staff, which consists of four new employees: Cecilia Powers (Assistant Dean of Student Life), Kim Pacatte (Lasallian Student Life Coordinator), and our newest addition, Manolito Jaldon Jr. (Assistant Director of Lasallian Student Life), we have been successful in reinvigorating the school with activities around Student Life, Christian Service, and Campus Ministry. Since this school year has begun, we have hosted a Freshmen AND Sophomore Lock-In, and great outdoor dances, most recently Homecoming attended by 1,290 students from CB and other local high schools. We have held multiple school masses outdoors where the entire student body has been able to attend in person. After an almost two-year long hiatus, we reinstated our Kairos retreat program. 46 students attended Kairos 82 at Zephyr Point in Lake Tahoe. In addition, our Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) continues to serve the community this year, hosting a very successful Falcon Family Drop-off

LASALLIAN STUDENT LIFE OFFICE As the sky begins to grey and much needed rain descends upon Sacramento, we want to cozy up next to a fireplace with a captivating book or binge watch our favorite show in comfy PJs...but the LSLO never rests! A busy November follows a whirlwind October. The event-filled month ended with our eagerly awaited Homecoming Dance relocated to Koppes Plaza due to unpredictable weather. A little cold and rain couldn’t stop our Falcons and their guests from dancing the night away to DJ Justified’s beats. It was a true celebration of CB and our entire community’s return home.

Upcoming Events November begins with our All Saints’ Day Mass, a November 1 feast day to remember saints and martyrs who have ascended into heaven. This mass and All Souls’ Day on November 2 commence a month of honoring loved ones who have passed. Throughout this sacred time, our community is invited to visit St. Joseph’s Chapel to pen the names of those they wish to pay tribute to and lay photos of departed loved ones at the altar. Please note that photos won’t be returned, so be sure to bring a copy of a beloved photo. Anyone who would like to bring a photo or have the name printed in our binder ahead of time, please visit the LSLO in Room 106. With November also comes Thanksgiving, and our community believes that everyone deserves to share a hearty meal with their family and friends on this special holiday. For this reason, the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) will host another Falcon Family Drop Off Drive – this time for canned food donations. Four tents, one for each grade level, will line the front of CB on Saturday, November 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. For each can donated, the student’s class will receive a spirit point. The class with the most spirit points will receive modified dress! Thank you in advance for helping put food on families’ tables during the holidays. Kairos 83 departs for Zephyr Point, Lake Tahoe on November 16. During this highly anticipated final retreat of their CB tenure, 30 seniors will deepen their connections with God, others, and themselves. With the support of student and faculty leaders, the retreatants will enter into a time of serious reflection, reigniting their spirituality and love for their CB community. After the overwhelmingly positive response from our Kairos 82 group, K83 is beyond thrilled to follow in their footsteps and partake in this transformative process.

Twinning The LSLO would like to introduce our community to our twin school, Saint John Baptiste de La Salle Catholic School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The De La Salle Christian Brothers began the Twinning program in 1995 to financially assist economically poor districts with the goal of helping these districts achieve financial self-sufficiency in the long term. The Christian Brothers founded St. John Baptist de La Salle Catholic School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2010 to serve the educational needs of children living in the Mother Teresa Orphanage and the children in the Asko district and Burau Keta, Oromiya. While the school is open to the public for a moderate fee, the children from the orphanage do not have to pay. St. John Baptist de La Salle Catholic School currently serves more than 1,649 students, including 789 boys and 860 girls, ages five through 18 in kindergarten through secondary school. Additionally, 250 adults attend the evening school. The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and finishes at 3:30 p.m. Tutoring classes are held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening classes for adults take place from 5:45 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. More than 65 teachers, including part-time teachers, serve the students. The school receives more than 800 applications each year, but can only admit approximately 300 new students. With our partnership and support, the Brothers can continue to transform lives in the Lwanga District in Africa. Consider a donation to the school by clicking this link!

STAY CONNECTED! For more information on updates and events happening at CB, check out the daily bulletin, weekly update and the online school calendar.

LSLO’s final event for the month is the Thanksgiving Prayer Service on November 23. Our Falcon community will gather in gratitude for our many blessings. While the past two years have presented numerous challenges, we have much to be thankful for. The LSLO team sends our warmest gratitude to our CB family. It is with your bountiful support that our office has produced meaningful events for our students this year. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | WWW.CBHS-SACRAMENTO.ORG
