Canberra Through the Seasons
Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons, from the endless blue skies and warm days of summer, through to the fresh mornings in winter, and the beautifully temperate autumn and spring. No matter when you visit for your event, there are ample activities and experiences to enjoy.
SUMMER With balmy weather that extends well into the evening, conferencing during Canberra summer means your delegates can go straight from the conference venue to outdoor dining in one of the city’s many summer-friendly restaurants and bars. Cricket fans can treat themselves to a live match at Manuka Oval, including international clashes, while lovers of all things horsepower can attend the annual Summernats event. And don’t miss the summer blockbuster exhibitions at Canberra’s museums, art galleries and national institutions.
AUTUMN
Autumn in Canberra is a kaleidoscope of colours as the exotic trees transform and paint the town vibrant tones. Lap up the views by hiring a GoBoat on Lake Burley Griffin, for one of the best ways to visually capture the change in season, or get the heart pumping with a hike to the top of Mt Ainslie or Black Mountain, to enjoy the colourful expanse from above. It’s also a season packed with events. Get out of bed early to witness the mesmerising Canberra Balloon Spectacular, and stay up late to see the city’s signature festival of illuminations, Enlighten. Or watch the short films of Lights! Canberra! Action!, taste your way through the Night Noodle Markets, and take part in the celebrations of Canberra Day.
WINTER
The quintessential winter experience in Canberra includes a glass of local wine in front of the fire and indulging in truffles. You can even take your delegates on a truffle hunt just 10 minutes from the city centre, to see first-hand how the exclusive and mouth-watering morsels are found. Canberra is also an easy 2.5 hours to the snowfields, making it a great option for a day trip, or to extend your stay once the conference is over. Back in the city, warm up in the hot shop at the Canberra Glassworks and be inspired as you watch the glass creations of local glass artists come to life.
SPRING
As the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer, spring in Canberra brings with it a sense of renewal and energy. The season in Canberra is most synonymous with Floriade, Australia’s month-long celebration of spring. See impressive displays of flowers bloom across the city, and take part in the rich program of workshops, entertainment, and events. As the weather warms up, it’s a great time of year to make your event program an active one. Head for a hike in one of the picturesque national parks, with ample options just a short drive from the city centre.
