SOLID RESEARCH WITH PARTNERS & BOLD EXECUTION
SOLID RESEARCH & BOLD EXECUTION FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT With support from the Government of Canada & IDRC, CBU & partners are leading research to explore how social enterprise models that empower front line community healthcare workers offer hope for combatting high child and maternal mortality in South Sudan.
THE SOCIAL & PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGE Only 45% of the population of South Sudan lives within 5 km of a health clinic (World Bank, 2014) South Sudan’s critical lack of healthcare infrastructure is contributing to one of the highest child and maternal mortality rates in the world. •
•
13.5% of children born in South Sudan that do not reach their first birthday South Sudan’s maternal mortality rate is 2.1%, the world’s highest
TESTING SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MODELS Model 1 • Sales of health products fund community health workers
Model 2 • Clinics fund health worker outreach to underserved communities
Model 3 • Revenue from other enterprises (energy, water, agriculture) fund health workers
SOLID RESEARCH & BOLD EXECUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 40 year track record working with Canadian indigenous communities and graduating large numbers of Aboriginal students 10 year track record in graduating MBAs with a community economic development skill set New proposal to launch CBU MBA CED in Africa with natural resource management focus
