The Holy Gospel Deacon People

Matthew 28:16–20 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Deacon People

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon

The Very Rev. Barkley S. Thompson, Dean

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, 6

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. 7

Silence

O Most mighty and merciful God, in this time of illness, we flee unto thee for succour. Deliver us, we beseech thee, from our peril; give strength and skill to all those who minister to the sick; prosper the means made use of for their cure; and grant that, perceiving how uncertain our life can be, we may apply our hearts unto that heavenly wisdom which leadeth to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Among the departed, we pray for all those who have died in service to their country and all those who have perished in war-torn areas of the world. The Celebrant says

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Confession and Absolution The Celebrant says

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Silence may be kept. Minister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. 8

The Celebrant says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People

And with thy spirit.

The People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

At the Offertory Anthem

Calvin Hampton (1938–1984) Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly; THe earth is not too low, his praises there may grow. Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out; But, more than all, the heart must bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! — George Herbert (1593–1633) Joel Goodloe, soloist

The Blessing The Dismissal Celebrant Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. People

Thanks be to God.

Closing Voluntary Epilogue from The Hovingham Sketches

Herbert Howells (1892–1983)

Joel Goodloe, soloist Daryl Robinson, Cathedral Organist 9

Music Notes The offertory solo this morning is a strikingly original and engaging hymn by Calvin Hampton. The text is by the great 17th century poet and priest George Herbert. Its expression of jubilant praise is heightened by the music’s mesmerizing “spinning wheel” accompaniment and melodic inventiveness. Before Hampton’s tragically early death, noted scholar Erik Routley called him “the greatest living composer of hymn tunes.” Organist-Choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City, Hampton pioneered a midnight organ recital series that filled the church every Friday night. — RLS The Book of Remembrance This week we remember Robert Stanley Pieringer. The Beauty of Flowers The flowers on the Cathedral Altar are given to the glory of God in loving celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary by Amy and Dieter Ufer.
