The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 10, 2021 11 a.m. We welcome you to Christ Church Cathedral. Since 1839, this Christian community has gathered for worship. The Cathedral is equipped with a hearing loop for assisted listening via telecoil.

Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral! Fully vaccinated worshipers are encouraged to wear masks indoors on campus. Worshipers who are not fully vaccinated, including children over the age of two, are expected to wear masks. We have a socially distanced and masked seating section available. The east transept and first rows near the pulpit are reserved for those who choose both to physically distance and wear masks. If you’re sitting in the marked sections, you’re expected to wear masks and sit socially distanced. We have resumed administering wine at Holy Communion. Intinction (i.e.-dipping the wafer in the chalice) is permitted. However, in accordance with Bishop Doyle’s guidelines, at Communion we will not drink from the common cup. It is also acceptable to receive bread but not wine, as each element of Communion contains a full measure of grace. The congregation will be invited to the altar rail to receive Communion. If you choose to sit in the area reserved for physical distance, Communion will be brought to you in your pew. We’re glad you’re here! Let us prepare to worship the Lord.

Garth Edmundson (1892–1971)

Hymn 475

The Word of God Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People

And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant continues

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray.

Lord, we pray thee that thy grace may always precede and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Reading

Job 23:1–9, 16–17

“Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge. “If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face!” Reader People

The Second Reading

Hebrews 4:12–16

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Reader People

Hymn 550

Alternate Tune, Stuttgart

Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult of our life’s wild, restless sea, Day by day his clear voice soundeth, saying, “Christian, follow me;” As, of old, Saint Andrew heard it by the Galilean lake, Turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for his dear sake. Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world’s golden store; From each idol that would keep us, saying, “Christian, love me more.” In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, “Christian, love me more than these.” Jesus calls us! By thy mercies, Savior, make us hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. 5

Tone II

V. Alleluia. Show they marvelous lovingkindness, O Lord: R. Thou art the Saviour of them who put their trust in thee. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel

Mark 10:17–31 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age — houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions — and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. 6

The Rev. Kathy Rock Pfister, Canon Vicar

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. 7

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence The People may add their own petitions. The Celebrant then prays:

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of thy people, and strengthen us to do thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant says

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Silence may be kept. Minister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, 8

have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. The Priest, stands and says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Priest continues

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. — Matthew 11:28 God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. — John 3:16

The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with thy spirit. The People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The Holy Communion At the Offertory Anthem

Paul Lindsley Thomas (b.1929)

Lord, we pray thee, that thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. — Collect, prayer book Sung by The Treble Choir and Tenor and Bass Staff Singers Marianna Parnas-Simpson, director

The Great Thanksgiving

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Creator of the light and source of life, who hast made us in thine image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Sanctus and Benedictus

Mass in a minor

Harold Darke

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 10

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 11

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Celebrant says

O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received: the memory of his passion is recalled; the spirit is filled with grace and the promise of future glory is given to us. Alleluia. — Saint Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274)

Prayer after Communion Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. 12

Closing Voluntary “Trumpet Voluntary” from Suite

John Stanley (1712–1786) arr. H. Coleman Music Notes

Today’s opening hymn is a lovely setting of a text by Gerhardt Tersteegen, an important German religious writer and hymnist. Tersteegen was born and spent his early life in the German city of Moers. A predominantly catholic area of Germany, he would soon find himself involved with a fast-growing protestant presence in the city. After finishing school, Tersteegen apprenticed under a merchant until he met Whilhelm Hoffman, a pietistic revivalist who inspired him to begin writing. His writings that survive include a collection of hymns published in 1729, many prayers, other letters, and finally translations of the writings of Julian of Norwich and other important religious figures. He would go on to live to 72 years of age. The text of his hymn speaks of the adoration of God, surrendering our lives to him so that we may live in true harmony. Today the Tersteegen’s text (except for stanza three which is a text by Henry Sloane Coffin, a Presbyterian leader and minister) is set to the tune TYSK. This tune is from a compilation of tunes from a collection named Psalm und Choralbuch published in 1719. The pairing of the text and the tune is first found in the 1940 Episcopal hymnal, and is a popular hymn sung to this day. — MRD The Book of Remembrance This week we remember Thomas E. Cobb. The Beauty of Flowers The flowers on the Cathedral Altar are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Bill Renfro by his family. The flowers in the floor vases are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Phyllis Keese Webb by her family.
