Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral! Fully vaccinated worshipers are encouraged to wear masks indoors on campus. Worshipers who are not fully vaccinated, including children over the age of two, are expected to wear masks. We have a socially distanced and masked seating section available. The east transept and first rows near the pulpit are reserved for those who choose both to physically distance and wear masks. If you’re sitting in the marked sections, you’re expected to wear masks and sit socially distanced. We have resumed administering wine at Holy Communion. Intinction (i.e.-dipping the wafer in the chalice) is permitted. However, in accordance with Bishop Doyle’s guidelines, at Communion we will not drink from the common cup. It is also acceptable to receive bread but not wine, as each element of Communion contains a full measure of grace. The congregation will be invited to the altar rail to receive Communion. Our offertory anthem today is a jubilant setting incorporating two well-known Spirituals, “O, what a beautiful city,” and “Bright mansions.” The text is based on Revelation 21:13 describing the New Jerusalem: “The city had a great and high wall with twelve gates inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve angels at the gates. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb …” This is one of many popular works written by the eminent choral conductor and composer, André Thomas. Among his many honors is his designation as “A Living Legend” by The African Diaspora Sacred Music Association. Having previously served on the faculty of the University of Texas, Austin, André anticipated a relaxed retirement after stepping down in 2020 as Director of Choral Activities at Florida State. However, his plans were upended when he was offered a position on the music faculty at Yale…and he just couldn’t resist. — RLS 10
