The Word of God

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

1
Hymn 599 Lift Every Voice

The Celebrant continues

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Gloria in Excelsis S 204

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And with thy spirit.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Old Scottish Chant

All-knowing and Almighty Lord, who guides us safely through trouble, give us clarity about our path. Grant us strength and courage to follow in your footsteps, so that we are not led astray. All of this we ask through Jesus our teacher and the Holy Spirit our helper who is always with us. Amen.

The First Reading Joel 2:23-32

O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Simplified Anglican Chant

How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of / hosts! * My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living / God.

The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her / young; * by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my / God.

Happy are they who dwell in your / house! * they will always be / praising you.

Happy are the people whose strength is in / you! * whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ / way.

Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of / springs, * for the early rains have covered it with pools of / water.

They will climb from height to / height, * and the God of gods will reveal himself in / Zion.

The Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18

I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn 686 Nettleton

The Holy Gospel Luke 18:9-14

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, `God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, `God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

4

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Lord, we pray for the lives of those living and working in areas of unrest, That they may gather the strength to continue what they do in peace.

Give us the discipline and strength to look after the habitats of your creation, That all your creatures may thrive in the future on this delicate earth.

We pray that all those living in homes of dysfunction and abuse, be granted stability and security,

That they may find balance in their day-to-day life.

Have mercy on all those with illness and disabilities, whether mental or physical, and we pray that those recovering may do so at ease,

That they may receive respect and support from our community.

We ask that our police officers, government officials, and other leaders treat citizens with honesty and awareness, That they may maintain order in both social and city environments.

Help our farmers who supply food to all of your people, and nurture the crops of your creation, That we may be nourished to do your good work in the world.

We pray for this church, Christ Church Cathedral, in finding a new dean, That we may be led by the Holy Spirit in faithful discernment.

5

The Celebrant adds a concluding collect.

The People remain standing.

The Confession of Sin

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

The Absolution

The Priest stands and says Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.

Matthew 11:28 God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

The Peace

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with thy spirit. The Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Jerusalem, our happy home

When shall we come to thee?

When shall our sorrows have an end?

Thy joys when shall we see?

There’s cinnamon that scenteth sweet

There palms spring on the ground

No tongue can tell, no heart can think

What Joy do there abound

For evermore the trees bear fruit

And ever more they spring

And ever more the saints are glad

And ever more doth sing

There Magdalene, she has less moan

Likewise there she doth sing

The happy saints in harmony

Through every street doth ring

Fair Magdalene hath dried her tears

She’s seen no more to weep

Nor wet the ringlets of her hair

To wipe our savior’s feet

The Great Thanksgiving

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

Creator of the light and source of life, who hast made us in thine image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

7

Sanctus and Benedictus S 114

Healey Willan (1880-1968)

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. A men.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

8

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction Anthem

At the Administration

If anybody ask you where I’m going, where I’m going soon.

So, if you want to know where I’m going,Where I’m going really soon. I’m going up yonder to be with my lord.

If I can take the pain, the heartache they bring There’s comfort that in knowing, I’ll soon be home.

If God gives me grace, I’ll run this race, And soon I see my savior face to face.

I’m going up yonder to be with my lord. I’m going up yonder, going home.

Prayer after Communion

Celebrant Let us pray.

And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist

9
