Hymn 287 (stanzas 1-4)

Sine Nomine

The Word of God Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant There is one Body and one Spirit; People There is one hope in God’s call to us; Celebrant One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People One God and Father of all. People

The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. People

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The First Reading

Ephesians 1:11-23

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the 2

saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Reader People

The Holy Gospel Deacon People

Luke 6:20-31

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Deacon People

Thanksgiving over the Water The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. People

Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses or pours water upon the candidate, saying

N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 7

Then the Bishop or priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying

N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen. Following the Baptism, a candle is lit from the Paschal candle and presented to the candidate. The People stand.

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Celebrant

Let us welcome the newly baptized. Celebrant and People

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People

And also with you.

The People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The Holy Communion Offerings of alms and bread and wine are received.

At the Offertory Anthem

Richard Dirksen (1921-2003)

Rejoice, ye pure in heart! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! Your glorious banner wave on high, the cross of Christ your King. Hosanna. Rejoice, give thanks and sing! With all the angel choirs, with all the saints of earth, pour out the strains of joy and bliss, true rapture, noblest mirth. Then on, ye pure in heart! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! Your glorious banner wave on high the cross of Christ your King. — Edward H. Plumptre, 1865

The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. People

Then the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For in the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: 9

Sanctus and Benedictus

John Rutter (b.1945)

Communion Service (Series 3)

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 10

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

All baptized Christians are welcome and encouraged to receive Holy Communion. Communion is received either kneeling or standing at the altar rail. Receive the Bread in the palm of your hand, and the Wine either by drinking from the Cup or by intinction, touching the Bread to the Wine. Gluten-free Bread is available; ask at the altar rail. 11

At the Administration Anthem

Richard Strutt (1848-1927) arr. Russell Schulz (b.1944)

In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer for the saints who before us have found their reward; When the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, but now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, he called them away from our worship below; But not till his love, at the font and the altar, had girt them with grace for the way they should go. These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, and dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, and still they were seeking the city of God. Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found him, whose journey is ended, whose perils are past; THey believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, where the clouds of earth’s sorrow are lifted at last. — William H. Draper (1855-1933)

Prayer after Communion Celebrant Let us pray. Celebrant and People

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
