Confession

The Officiant says to the people Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Officiant and People, all kneeling Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Preces and Responses All stand Thomas Ebdon (1738-1811) Hymn 119 Dix

Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14

Setting: Thomas A. Walmisley (1814-1856)

Sung by Choir, People seated.

Give the King your justice, O God, * and your righteousness to the King’s Son;

That he may rule your people righteously * and the poor with justice;

That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, * and the little hills bring righteousness.

He shall defend the needy among the people; * he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor.

He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, * from one generation to another.

He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, * like showers that water the earth.

In his time shall the righteous flourish; * there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more.

The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall pay tribute, * and the kings of Arabia and Saba offer gifts.

All kings shall bow down before him, * and all the nations do him service.

For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, * and the oppressed who has no helper.

He shall have pity on the lowly and poor; * he shall preserve the lives of the needy.

He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, * and dear shall their blood be in his sight.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

First Lesson

Reader A Reading from the Book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 42:1-9

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He

will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Magnificat in F Peter Aston (1983-2013)

Sung by Choir, People seated.

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden: for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

All stand

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Second Lesson Matthew 3:13-17

Reader A Reading from the Gospel according to Matthew.

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Nunc Dimittis in F Sung by Choir, People seated. Peter Aston

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

All stand

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed People and Choir monotone, all standing.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Suffrages Sung by Choir. People kneeling. Thomas Ebdon

The Lord’s Prayer

Sung by Choir.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Collects and Prayers

Greeting

At the Offertory Peter Cornelius (1824-1874); Anthem chorale: attr. Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608); arr. Ivor Atkins (1869-1953)

Solo

Three Kings from Persian lands afar To Jordan follow the pointing star: And this the quest of the travellers three, Where the newborn King of the Jews may be. Full royal gifts they bear for the King; Gold, incense, myrrh are their offering.

The star shines out with a steadfast ray; The Kings to Bethlehem make their way, And there in worship they bend the knee, As Mary’s child in her lap they see; Their royal gifts they show to the King, Gold, incense, myrrh are their offering.

Thou child of man — lo, to Bethlehem

The Kings are trav’lling — travel with them! The star of mercy, the star of grace, Shall lead thy heart to its resting place. Gold, incense, myrrh thou canst not bring; Offer thy heart to the infant King.

Chorale

How brightly shines the morning star!

With grace and truth from heav’n afar Our Jesse tree now bloweth.

Of Jacob’s stem and David’s line, For Thee, my Bridegroom, King divine, My soul with love o’erfloweth.

Thy word, Jesu, Inly feeds us, Rightly leads us, Life bestowing. Praise, O praise such love o’erflowing.

— solo text: Peter Cornelius; trans. The Rev. Herbert Newell Bate (1871–1941); chorale text: Peter Cornelius after Philipp Nicolai John Gallagher, soloist
