WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? The four main rules of perspective as stated by Durer are as follows: First, the perpendiculars in the perspective must all meet at the central vanishing point. Next, parallel lines in any direction share a vanishing point. Furthermore, if the parallels are on the horizontal plane, the vanishing point also lies therein. If the parallels form a 45 degree angle with the picture plane, then the distance seperating a vanishing point and the central point is equivalent to the distance between the eye and the picture plane. Finally, there is foreshortening present in perspectival images.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space?

Homogenous space is an infinite, fully rational and immutable space, the metric space used in Elucidean geometry and mathematics. It is based on the postulate and compared and contrasted against visual space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 reveals both a threshold of depth and also highlights the sheltered nature of the Renaissance/Gothic inspired bazaar. The top floor hides the bustle beneath, and is even quieter than the latter in both notation and physical activity.

Perspective 2 highlights the fleeting interactions between the characters and the atmosphere reflects that. The focal point on the courtesan flanked either side by the giant and the veiled lady creates a sense of glances and connections which are ephemeral in nature, and the distance between characters emphasizes this.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

The girl’s glance towards the store owner highlights a revelation and realisation of the conditions they work under. The atmosphere is ethereal, the connections and interactions are fleeting yet pronounced, which is what Chloe is, a city through time.

The viewpooint from the stall places emphasis on the fragile yet direct viewpoints between the figures, while the receding fittings and glass stained windows represent variety and diversity, something which Chloe is described as having plenty of.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic objects depend on their contact with the author for their authenticity. Allographic objects on the other hand can exist without the direct influence of the author: they use notation as a means to reproduce the authenticity of their works.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? Because new representational techniques reflect the technological advances within the modernised society. The modern world is made up of fluid elements: data, communications, economics, etc. Representational techniques should reflect this and innovate to match the present times.

The spatial qualities of the city are evident in the thresholds of depth and the open lower floor. The contrast between light and dark is particularly evident through the perspectives.
