PATTERNS • FEBRUARY 2012
Let us count the ways! By Debbie Hamlett, Director of Development With February the traditional month to celebrate love, it’s timely to let all of you who support Illinois Public Media and the WILL stations know how much we appreciate and value you. As we begin the second month of an exciting new year, we’re able to launch new programs and community initiatives because of individual financial support like yours— dollars that now make up 43 percent of our overall budget. Thank you! It’s support from Friends of WILL that has put new Illinois Pioneers programs in the pipeline, including our first new episode featuring David Inge’s interview with University of Illinois College of Media graduate Rick Kaplan, who’s served as president of CNN, senior vice president of ABC News and president of MSNBC—not to mention holding the record for most Emmy Awards by an individual in a career. This show airs at 7:30 pm Friday, Feb. 17. Another Pioneers installment features a true pioneer of local public broadcasting—former WILL chief engineer Rob Beldon. This program includes rare footage of early WILL-TV programs produced during Rob’s tenure, recently discovered as part of our American Archive project funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It airs at 7:30 pm Friday, Feb. 24. In addition, we’re continuing our previous efforts on radio, TV and online to address area communities’ concerns surrounding hunger and its related issues. As part of our radio fundraising pledge drive this month, we’ll partner for the third year with the Common Ground Food Co-op to donate meals for families through the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Support AM 580 and FM 90.9 and this community effort beginning Thursday, Feb. 9. Then on Tuesday, Feb. 14, we’ll join with other public radio stations across Illinois in a day-long call for financial support. Please help us show that WILL Radio supporters love their stations the most! Day in and day out, it’s our pleasure to hear from all of you connected to us and to one another through your relationship with public media. We know you agree that exploring topics and learning about issues creates a space for making your own informed decisions. It’s important work and we couldn’t do it without you!
From draft dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between scandal and achievement. In Clinton, the latest installment in the critically acclaimed series of presidential biographies, American Experience explores the story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history. The two-part series airs on WILL-TV at 8 pm Monday, Feb. 20, and at 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 21. The program begins by recounting key events in Clinton’s life, including earning a Rhodes Scholarship and a J.D. from Yale Law School—where he met fellow student Hillary Rodham—to his election as governor of Arkansas before defeating George H.W. Bush for president in 1992. American Experience then follows Clinton across his two terms during the crucial and transformative period between the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11 as he confronted
some of the key forces that would shape the future, including partisan political warfare and domestic and international terrorism. The program also examines his struggles, with uneven success, to define the role of American power in a post-Cold War world, including his responsibility in facilitating the Middle East Peace Agreement of September 1993 (shown below) between Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat. Most memorably, it explores how Clinton’s conflicted character made history, even as it enraged his enemies and confounded his friends. The program features unprecedented access to scores of Clinton insiders including White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers, White House counsel Bernard Nussbaum, White House chief of staff Leon Panetta and deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes, as well as interviews with foreign leaders, members of the Republican opposition, childhood friends, staffers from Clinton’s years as governor of Arkansas, biographers and journalists.

Programs honor Black History Month
s Ameena Matthews, violence interrupter
The WILL stations feature a variety of programs in honor of Black History Month, including the following three offerings on WILL-TV. Frontline: The Interrupters Join a group of older former gang leaders trying to “interrupt” shootings and protect their communities from the violence they once committed. This new film follows the inner workings of CeaseFire, an innovative program in Chicago designed to prevent shootings, including weekly meetings where the interrupters report on the simmering disputes and the senseless shootings in their neighborhoods. From director Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Stevie), The Interrupters is a compelling observational journey into the stubborn, persistent violence that plagues our American cities. It airs at 8 pm Tuesday, Feb. 14. 2 PATTERNS • FEBRUARY 2012
Great Performances: Memphis Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for best new musical, Memphis tells the 1950s story of white disc jockey Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) and his romantic interest, Felicia Farrell (Montego Glover), a rising black singer who can’t make the break out of segregated clubs on her own. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the golden era of early rock ’n’ roll takes flight. But as things heat up, the question of whether the world is ready for their music—or their love—is put to a test. With an original story by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) and a new score with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan, the production is directed by Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys). Don’t miss the program at 8 pm Friday, Feb. 24. American Masters: Cab Calloway A singer, dancer and band leader, Cab Calloway was an exceptional figure in the history of jazz while he charmed audiences
An interactive conversation with the C-U mayors
Join WILL reporter Jim Meadows as he talks to Champaign Mayor Don Gerard and Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing about the past year and the year ahead for the twin cities. Airing at 8 pm Thursday, Feb. 2, on WILL-TV and WILL-AM 580, with live video and an interactive chat online at will. illinois.edu, Focus: A Conversation with Two Mayors will give viewers and listeners a chance to call in with their questions.

around the world with boundless energy, bravado and elegant showmanship. His back glide dance step is the precursor to Michael Jackson’s moonwalk, and his scatting lyrics find their legacy in today’s hip-hop and rap. An ambassador for his race, Calloway was one of the first black musicians to tour the segregationist South, as early as 1932. At the top of his game in the jazz and swing eras of the ’30s and ’40s, he toured as Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess, forever putting his personal stamp on “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” His career flagged until he was rediscovered in the 1980s in The Blues Brothers and even on Sesame Street, becoming a new cult hero of sorts. Watch this program at 9 pm Monday, Feb. 27.

“Although the cities are separate, with different city officials, police forces and schools, many of the issues affecting one affect the other. There’s a lot of overlap,” Jim said. “We’ll be talking about policecommunity relations, ideas for alternate energy sources, economic development, efforts to reduce crime and other issues important to residents of both cities.” The progam will be repeated at 3 pm Saturday, Feb.4.
Send words of love on Valentine’s Day Win your sweetheart’s favor when you combine a special dedication with a music request to be included on WILL-FM’s Words of Love, Soft and Tender. Hosted by Roger Cooper, the program airs in place of The Evening Concert from 7-11 pm Tuesday, Feb. 14. Just think of that special someone in your life and write a few poetic lines—perhaps something such as: Dear John, Roses are red, Violets are blue. I requested Gershwin’s Rhapsody for you. Make your request via email to willamfm@ illinois.edu before Feb. 10. Then sit back, relax and share the fun when we read your poem and play your music request. PATTERNS • FEBRUARY 2012 3

Learn about proposed stormwater utility fees This month, Illinois Public Media takes a look at the nation’s aging water system and plans for a stormwater utility fee in Champaign and Urbana. Both cities are considering implementing a fee as have other Illinois cities, including Aurora, Bloomington, Moline, Normal, Rock Island and Morton. At 3 pm Sunday, Feb. 12, WILL-TV airs Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure, which tells the story of America’s distressed essential infrastructure systems: drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater. These complex and aging systems—some in the ground for more than 150 years—are critical components for basic sanitation, health, public safety and economic development. 6 PATTERNS • FEBRUARY 2012
Then on Wednesday Feb. 15, on WILL-AM’s Morning Edition, Illinois Public Media News examines proposed stormwater utility fees in Champaign and Urbana. Reporter Jim Meadows reports on why cities say they need the fee to pay for the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of the stormwater drainage system. If a fee is adopted, every property owner within the city would pay based on the size of the area on their property that rainwater won’t penetrate. Then at 11 am the same day on WILL-AM’s Focus, with a video webcast on will.illinois. edu, representatives of the city and others knowledgeable about water infrastructure issues will talk to host David Inge and answer listener and viewer questions.

Play it again!
The second season of Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook airs at 8 pm Fridays, Feb. 3, 10 and 17. In the first program, Time Machines, the singer-songwriter explores how technology has preserved and altered the way we think about the great songs and singers of the past. Next, Lost and Found reveals Feinstein’s discovery of an undocumented song by one of the giants of American popular music and follows his quest to verify its authenticity. Then Saloon Singers examines the allure of musical nightlife, from Mississippi juke joints to the neon of Las Vegas, and highlights the history of some of the pioneering nightclub entertainers. 10 PATTERNS • FEBRUARY 2012
A workable health care model?
One small community in Colorado delivers the highest value-for-the-money health care in the United States and covers nearly everyone in town. Abandoned shortly after birth in Bangladesh, twin girls joined at the head had little chance of survival until they were saved and taken to Australia by an aid worker. After two years, Trishna and Krishna are ready for a marathon separation surgery. With exclusive access, NOVA documents the girls and their caregivers throughout their journey in Separating Twins at 8 pm Wednesday, Feb. 8.
s Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers flank their musical director and arranger Hal Borne. It was in a box of Hal Borne’s papers, given to Michael Feinstein by Hal’s widow Rose, that Michael discovered a previously unknown, unpublished, lost song by a major American songwriter.

American Experience answers many questions about the Amish religious community, including how the insular order has thrived within one of the world’s most open, individualistic societies. The Amish (7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 28) explores how the Amish have successfully asserted themselves in resisting the encroachments of modern society and government, asks what Americans’ attraction to the Amish says about national values and looks at what the future holds for a community whose existence is so rooted in the past.

Extraordinary people risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape via the clandestine Underground Railroad. Among them was William Still of Philadelphia, a free black man who accepted delivery of crates containing human “cargo.” Underground Railroad: The William Still Story (9 pm Monday, Feb. 6) reveals some of the lesser-known stories behind this humanitarian enterprise, and explores key Canadian connections, including the surprising fate of former slaves who crossed the U.S.-Canada border. When did slavery end?
From the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas Blackmon, Slavery By Another Name highlights new practices of involuntary servitude that arose in the South following the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Spanning the eight decades following 1865, the program examines a “neoslavery” system in which men, often guilty of no crime, were arrested and compelled to work without pay. Choosing to make a bequest gift
John D. and Lissa May Mudrick
I
n addition to their current annual support, John and Lissa May Mudrick have chosen a bequest gift to underscore their appreciation for and enjoyment of the WILL stations.
Lissa is a University of Illinois graduate who first discovered FM 90.9 for background music while studying. Later, as an agent for State Farm Insurance, she became a charter member of WILL’s Business Partners program. John discovered the stations when he moved to the area in 1987 to begin a new position with Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul. Shortly after they married in 1993, Lissa and John prepared wills and realized they also wanted to make provisions for various charitable organizations that hold special meaning for them. “We liked the fact that we could choose to earmark a percentage of our estate, rather than a fixed dollar amount, for WILL and other charitable organizations,” Lissa said. “It’s a good way to think in terms of a ‘no matter what, we can do this’ amount. Plus,

it allows for the fluctuations in the value of your assets,” she added. “And since none of us knows what life has in store for us, it’s also beneficial that the bequest arrangements are adjustable or even revocable in the future,” John said. The programs that spur John’s support are This Old House, Motor Week, As Time Goes By and any history-related show. Lissa’s favorites include All Things Considered, Weekend Edition and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. “We both enjoy the in-depth news reporting, the intelligence and wit in the various entertainment shows and the quality of the research and production in the history and documentary programs. We’re happy to do our part to support public broadcasting because we understand how Illinois Public Media enhances our daily lives,” Lissa said. “Thanks to WILL’s programs, we keep finding and learning new and different perspectives on our world community,” John added.

Community Cinema: February
In More Than a Month, Independent Lens tells the story of Shukree Hassan Tilghman, a 29-year-old African-American filmmaker on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month. This tongue-in-cheek journey investigates what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in a “post-racial” America.
Rooms A & B of the Champaign Public Library (200 W. Green St.). Illinois Public Media and the library are partners in presenting the 10-film Community Cinema series for 2011-2012. The film will be shown with closed captions for the hearing impaired and an English Sign Language interpreter will sign the discussion.
A free screening of the film and a discussion of the issues it raises will take place at 6 pm Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Robeson
If you miss the Community Cinema screening, More Than a Month airs at 9 pm Friday, Feb. 17, on WILL-TV.
