Social media and the public interest By Jack Brighton Director of New Media & Innovation In the 12 years I’ve been building WILL’s websites, I’ve been enthusiastic about the Internet’s power to serve the mission of public broadcasting. During this time we’ve seen accelerating change in technology, deeply affecting our culture, politics and economy. While technology will continue to improve our lives in many ways, the pace of change seems overwhelming. Most importantly, we don’t have enough opportunity to consider the unintended consequences of the choices we are making. Take social media, for example. Facebook now has more than 500 million active users. More video is uploaded to YouTube every 60 days than the three major TV networks created in 60 years. Twitter has been at the center of the social media storm as a reporting tool in natural disasters, and as an organizing tool for activists throughout the world. They are called “social media” for good reason: the one-to-many model of the broadcast age has been superseded by the many-to-many model of the network age. This is both a threat and opportunity for traditional media. If we want to remain relevant in a world of social media, we must be included there, especially for younger audiences. So we ask you to “like” our WILL Radio-TV-Online Facebook page, and follow us on Twitter at willpublicmedia. But by promoting our presence on these social media services, we are also promoting the services. The more people who sign up for Facebook accounts, the more Facebook is worth. I would not argue against Facebook pursuing its corporate interests, but I think it’s important to point out that those interests overlap only partially with the public interest. This is why I believe it’s more important than ever that public media continue to “own” its custom content and Web presence. We do this by maintaining a robust website and hosting our own online media library. We have tens of thousands of audio and video archives available on demand at will.illinois.edu, and we operate the service ourselves. This may lead to a few bumps compared to Facebook or Amazon, which have huge technical staffs. But in the emerging world of the corporate cloud and social media, someone has to keep public media truly public. We’re committed to that, and hope you appreciate and support it.

Mid-American Gardener debuts!
Gardener’s producer. “This change builds on the program’s Fall 2008 expansion to statewide syndication,” he added.
Same expert advice, new name and new digs at WILL-TV With a new moniker, Illinois Gardener is poised to share its weekly broadcasts of Hardiness Zone 5 plant expertise with gardening enthusiasts in neighboring states. After all, thanks to the live video stream and video archive on will.illinois.edu, Zone 5 residents outside of Illinois can already benefit from the program’s advice. Now back to full-time production after a brief hiatus, Mid-American Gardener will debut at 7 pm Thursday, July 21, with a new set. Apart from these changes, everything remains the same. Host Dianne Noland (above) is back after her May retirement from a 31-year teaching career at the University of Illinois and is eager to re-join her fellow panelists. “It’s a natural fit since the information Dianne and the panelists provide applies outside the state’s geographic border,” said David Thiel, WILL-TV program director and
Dianne agrees. “It’s a decision that came about over time and is a nice progression. We hope it’s also an opportunity to share what we love with even more gardening friends,” she said. Particularly rewarding to her is the fact that the new set was funded with a 2009 College of ACES Team Award for Excellence she and 10 ACES colleagues—all members of the Gardener team—earned. “Everyone voted to invest the monetary award back into the program,” Dianne added. “It was exciting to work with the show’s director, WILL video production manager Jeff Cunningham, on the set design. The timing of unveiling it along with the new program name seems like the perfect way to celebrate the program’s success.” As the show’s budget permits, David is also planning to include occasional on-location segments for Mid-American Gardener in the future. Panelists are blogging on the program website, which changes in July to midamericangardener.org where there’s also a live online chat during each show.
Name that program! Longtime panelist Bill Erickson of Prairieview Landscaping submitted Mid-American Gardener as a program name in response to David Thiel’s request of WILL staff and Gardener panelists. PATTERNS • JULY 2011 1
Happy birthday, USA! This year’s presentation of A Capitol Fourth features Josh Groban, Jordin Sparks, Little Richard and the cast of the Broadway hit, Million Dollar Quartet. These award-winning musicians are accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jack Everly.
Justice has a new defender
Broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the program also offers viewers the most spectacular fireworks display anywhere in the nation—thanks to 20 television cameras stationed around the city, including the White House, the Washington Monument and across the Potomac River. In tribute to America’s birthday, the show is capped off with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery.
What does an honest cop do when his bosses are on the side of the lawbreakers? Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters, kidnappers and killers, Detective Aurelio Zen (Rufus Sewell) brings justice to modernday Italy, whether the authorities want it or not. Zen is a Roman police detective hailing from Venice, where Zen is a local shortening of the name Zeno. Separated from his wife and living with his mother, he is too frazzled by his job to think about romance—until he meets Tania Moretti (Caterina Murino), his chief’s new secretary. New from Masterpiece Mystery!, Zen brings a trio of spellbinding cases based on the bestselling novels by British crime writer Michael Dibdin to WILL-TV. In Vendetta (8 pm Sunday, July 17), a killer is on a vendetta-fueled rampage against those who wrongly imprisoned him, including a cop who had almost nothing to do with it: Zen. But Zen is too busy dealing with another crime—a politicallycharged murder—to notice that he’s on the psychopath’s hit list. Ordered by his boss to nail the chief suspect in the murder case whether he is guilty or not and by a justice official to get the guy off, Zen is in a no-win situation. In the next installment, a disgraced aristocrat dies after falling from a bridge—or was he pushed?

As usual, Zen gets mixed signals from his scheming bosses: he’s pressured from the Ministry of Justice to rule it a suicide while a powerful prosecutor wants him to find a murderer. The plot thickens when it appears that the victim was trying to inform on a previously unknown group with conspirators at the highest levels of Italian society. Meanwhile, Zen and Tania are having trouble closing the book on their failed marriages. Cabal airs at 8 pm Sunday, July 24. In the final episode, Ratking (8 pm Sunday, July 31), a wealthy industrialist and political party funder is kidnapped. The Ministry of Justice wants Zen to get the hostage back alive at any cost, but the kidnappers kill the lawyer who brings a ransom payment from the family. In kidnapping-plagued Italy, it’s illegal to pay a ransom, and Zen must skirt this issue while dealing with the bickering relatives, who seem ready to forget about their captive kinsman. Even worse, Zen has a tyrannical new boss who is a stickler for regulations, including the one against workplace romances, jeopardizing the detective’s burgeoning affair with Tania.
After one year at the helm...
Another conversation with U of I President Hogan WILL’s David Inge will talk with University of Illinois President Michael Hogan about some of the top issues on campus, and give listeners and viewers direct access to the president through phone calls during the show. You can also email your questions before the show to will-talk@ illinois.edu. Focus: A Conversation with U of I President Michael Hogan will air at 9 pm Wednesday, July 13, on WILL-TV and WILL-AM, with live audio and video streaming online at will.illinois.edu. Issues likely to come up are reorganization of the university administration, state support for higher education, how colleges can improve retention of students and the movement for accountability in higher education.

July 4 specials on WILL-AM We hear a lot of discussion about the concept of community—but it’s often easy to lose perspective on the real stories of the people who are working to create interwoven lives and neighborhoods. In State of the Re:Union, Public Radio Talent Quest winner Al Letson(above) travels our nation to find those stories, then tells them with grace. Don’t miss two of these specials airing in place of WILL’s Focus on Monday, July 4. At 10 am, Letson explores the misguided portrayal of the rural Appalachian region as a place of people

at the mercy of the region’s poverty or bigotry. Join him when he travels to southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky to examine how residents are balancing deep ties to their history while facing the future in a new way. Then at 11 am, Letson moves on to Austin, Texas—a city wrestling with its identity, not because of an economic meltdown, but rather as a result of its success. With a spike in population and economic advantages, many residents are concerned that this growth and development might jeopardize the city’s unique, countercultural feel.

One special library Pagan wonders why U.S. troops were in Siberia during World War I and Elyse Luray sizes up a Ronald McDonald costume. On July 12, the detectives investigate a Civil War soldier’s letter, a 1950s comic book and fabric from an aircraft that could be linked to Charles Lindbergh. Then on July 19, the items include a propeller from a World War II drone, a wooden club that could be Teddy Roosevelt’s and a letter that Clara Barton might have written. For the July 26 program, investigations include Japanese characters carved into a cane, an unusual wooden telescope and drawings of huge gold nuggets from the Gold Rush era.
A decade ago, Colombian teacher Luis Soriano (above) was inspired to spend his weekends bringing a modest collection of precious books, via two hard-working donkeys, to the children of a poor and violence-ridden province. As Soriano braves armed bands, drug traffickers, snakes and heat, his library on hooves carries an inspirational message about education and a better future for Colombia. Now POV tells his story in Biblioburro: The Donkey Library at 9 pm Tuesday, July 19.

Illinois Public Media names new development director Debbie Hamlett has been named director of development at Illinois Public Media (IPM), which includes the WILL radio and television stations. Debbie worked for more than 15 years at South Carolina ETV, a statewide public radio and television service, where she was most recently the director of development and programming. “Illinois Public Media has an outstanding reputation for serving the community,” she said. “I’m thrilled to join such a great team to build on the station’s remarkable legacy. I was immediately drawn to the warmth and generosity of the IPM staff and everyone I met.” Debbie, who began work at IPM on May 31, manages the membership, marketing, corporate support and major giving activities at IPM, and also serves as a member of the organization’s senior management team. Illinois Public Media General Manager Mark Leonard said Debbie’s successful track record in development at South Carolina ETV is one of reasons she is an outstanding choice to lead Illinois Public Media’s fundraising and marketing efforts.
“Her extensive industry experience and enthusiasm will be great assets to IPM and to the central Illinois community,” he said. Debbie has served on the board of the Public Radio Association of Development Officers and served for four years as chair of the National Educational Telecommunications Association Development Council.

Ask any of the 520 Red Green fans who attended the May 15 final stop on his Wit and Wisdom Tour, and they will tell you the event was aptly named. Norm Murdent (left) posed after the show with comedian Steve Smith, who summoned his betterknown alter ego to help raise nearly $32,500 for WILL. In addition to ticket sales, this amount also included generous sponsorships from four business friends (see the inside back cover of this issue for more information) and the proceeds from sales of Steve’s books. To everyone who braved the cold and drizzling rain that day, thanks for helping support WILL!
We’re tickled plaid
Sponsors made Red Green event possible The partnership of ticket buyers and four generous WILL business friends created a laugh-packed May 15 event with Red Green at the Virginia Theatre. For their role in making the event possible and helping us raise nearly $32,500 for WILL, we salute these businesses.
Thanks for helping Gardener grow! From the first show in 1992, Illinois Gardener has been all about helping an ever-growing community of plant lovers learn how to make their hobby more successful. That kind of education and information is one of the things public media does best, so we’re pleased that the program keeps getting better and continues to reach more people. We’re looking forward to even more growth as MidAmerican Gardener! We know we couldn’t do it without the support of these longtime Gardener sponsors. Thanks!
