A Message to Our Members While it seems that the rest of the

world slows down a bit in June, for WILL it’s one of our busiest and most important times of the year. That’s because June 30 marks the end of our fiscal year. It’s time for the final push to meet our membership and business support goals—so that we have the operating revenue that helps purchase programs for the coming year. Invariably, the end of the fiscal year is also a time to review the previous 12 months, recalling the station’s successes and challenges, while looking at exciting new opportunities for the months ahead. Above all, it’s a chance to reflect on how fortunate we are at WILL to have such strong and wideranging community support. More than 13,000 individuals, families and businesses throughout central Illinois make voluntary contributions to WILL. It’s one of the largest contributor groups of any non-profit organization in our region. This support plays a vital

role in our ability to serve you and our communities with a wide-ranging variety of public media resources. In fact, nearly 40 percent of the programs and services that WILL provides are made possible by the Friends of WILL. You are one of those Friends of WILL. And for that, I thank you. The successes WILL experienced this year—from a re-vamped, more robust web site (will.illinois.edu) to new programs, such as TV’s Lincoln: Prelude to the Presidency, FM’s The Morning Express, AM’s award-winning news and election coverage and more—are a reflection of the partnership we enjoy with the community and with Friends like you. We continue to offer great programs and partnerships as June unfolds. I invite you to read more about them in this issue of Patterns and join us as often as possible. As we look to close out our fiscal year successfully, we must raise just under

$400,000 by June 30 to achieve our goal of $2.1 million in viewer and listener support. To be honest, it’s a tall order. So we will be asking for your continued generosity. When you receive a letter from us, please return it with the largest contribution you can make. Or when you see or hear something you enjoy, please phone in your renewed support or your additional gift to 217-244-9455. As always, you may also choose to contribute online through our secure giving site, willpledge.org. Your support has real impact on our ability to serve you with great programs in the weeks and months ahead. I hope we can count on you again this month as we close out our fiscal year. Thank you for all you do.

Illinois Public Media Projects Engage Youth in Research, Media Production Solid Black

Teens Research Assets They Can Use in E2Y Project African-American teens in ChampaignUrbana live in the community, but often don’t feel part of the community, says Patricia Avery, executive director of the C-U Area Project. “There’s been a disconnect between youth and adults,” she said. This summer a group of 10 teens in the E2Y (Engaging and Empowering Youth) Project will interview business owners, neighbors, community leaders and others to identify and map opportunities for youth in the cities. When she grew up, said Avery, older men in the community hired boys for odd jobs and helped them learn self-

confidence and a trade. “They got all of that from just being around these older gentlemen,” she said. The E2Y project can connect young people to adults in the community who can provide the kind of information and help that will enable youth to make their lives richer and more rewarding, she said. Avery asks adults in the community who would be willing to be interviewed by the teens to contact her by email at cuapavery@juno.com or phone at 217-373-2827. Teens will concentrate on mapping assets in the Garden Hills and Holiday Park neighborhoods in Champaign, the Scottswood neighborhood in Urbana and the North End of both cities. They’ll be us-

ing a mapping curriculum developed by the Illinois Rural Families Program. Illinois Public Media is partnering with the C-U Area Project, the Mental Health Center of Champaign County and the University of Illinois Community Informatics Initiative in the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences on the project, funded in part by a $10,000 grant from the Lumpkin Foundation. Illinois Public Media will train the teens to make videos of their interviews with people in the community. The information will be presented in a printed booklet and on a special Web site where asset maps will be displayed.

Youth Radio Series Features Lives of Two C-U Women Growing up in a segregated society, Erma Bridgewater of Champaign and Ruby Hunt of Urbana were turned away from stores, restaurants and schools. Their stories, told to students in the Youth Media Workshop, form the basis of a new radio series, I Remember, I Believe.

University of Illinois journalism graduate student Keri Carpenter, working with WILL-AM’s Dave Dickey, produced the series looking at the experiences of African-American women. It airs on WILL-AM 580 at 4:45 pm and 6:45 pm Mondays and Tuesdays June 8-30. Eight girls from Franklin Middle School participating in the Youth Media Workshop interviewed and made audio recordings of Bridgewater, 96, at left with students, and Hunt, 72, several years ago as part of the Youth Media Workshop in which U of I journalism professor Leon Dash trained the students in “immersion journalism” interviewing techniques. The women talk about what it was like growing up in a segregated country, rais-

ing children in Champaign-Urbana, and watching desegregation take place. “Mrs. Bridgewater remembers everything,” Keri said. “She’s in her 90s, but she can talk about things that happened in her 20s like it was yesterday.” Mrs. Hunt’s stories about dealing with the indignities of segregation impressed her, said Keri. “Not that she was at peace with any of it, but she had the maturity to handle some difficult situations at a young age,” said Keri, who did additional interviews with the two women. Participating students were Lalaina Smith, Amaris Bailey, Isis Griffin, Gabrielle Ceaser, Brooke Harris, Keneasha Terry, Kahlilah Cook and Kayla Carter. Teacher Shameem Rahka worked with the students at Franklin Middle School. The Youth Media Workshop is a partnership between Illinois Public Media and William Patterson, associate director of the U of I African-American Cultural Center. PATTERNS • JUNE 2009

Hitting All the Right Notes Four music specials

bring you front-row seats to outstanding performances by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, Victor Borge and Josh Groban this month. With a career spanning more than four decades and a host of accolades—including 18 Grammy Awards and a record total of three different inductions into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame—guitar legend Eric Clapton is known for his mastery of the blues style and, of course, rocking out on his famed Stratocaster. Great Performances’ In Concert from Madison Square Garden, captures Clapton and his longtime friend, Steve Winwood, performing again for the first time since their days in the supergroup Blind Faith. This reunion concert at 8:30 pm Wednesday, June 3, features a wide range of material from the Clapton catalog, hits from Winwood’s time as front-man for the band, Traffic, and their collaborations from Blind Faith. Victor Borge: 100 Years of Music and Laughter is an unparalleled collection of the entertainer’s classic comedy, including Phonetic Punctuation, Inflationary Language, Autumn Leaves with Robert Merrill, The Opera Singer with Marylyn Mulvey and more. Rare archival footage from the Borge family vault enhances this memorable retrospective, which airs at 7 pm Thursday, June 4. Introduced to the world at the age of 12, superstar Stevie Wonder quickly became known for his expert fusion of soul, funk and R&B styles. Signed to Motown Records by Berry Gordy, “Little Stevie” rocketed to stardom with hits that included My Cherie Amour and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours), producing nine #1 records and amassing 22 Grammy Awards over the course of four decades. At 8:15 pm Thursday, June 4, Great Performances presents Stevie Wonder: Live at Last, filmed at London’s O2 Arena in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Motown Records. In a Soundstage special event at 7 pm Sunday, June 7, Josh Groban performs favorites from his best-selling albums in an intimate theater setting. Taped at Frederick P. Rose Hall, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Josh Groban Live in New York includes Alla Luce del Sole, You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up) and February Song. The show features special guest appearances by acclaimed jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Chris Botti.

A Private Life Made Public With unprecedented access to one of the world’s music

legends, American Masters explores how Neil Young’s unbending dedication to the muse has generated an aweinspiring body of work—and bruised a few egos along the way. Neil Young: Don’t Be Denied airs at 7 pm Wednesday, June 3, tracing his musical journey in his own words. Compiled from three hours of interviews shot in New York and California, the film uses previously unseen performance footage from the singer’s own extensive archives. It also features cohorts Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Nils Lofgren and James Taylor. From Young’s early transcontinental American quest for recognition, through the first flush of success with Buffalo Springfield to the mega-stardom with Crosby, Stills and Nash and the soulful rock of Crazy Horse, his career has enjoyed many guises.

David Suchet (Henry VIII, The Way We Live Now) returns to his signature role as Poirot—exercising his “little grey cells” by helping police investigate crimes and murders, whether they ask for his help or not. In Cat Among the Pigeons at 8 pm Sunday, June 21, Poirot tackles a murder case involving international espionage, a MiddleEastern revolution and a missing princess. In Mrs. McGinty’s Dead at 8 pm Sunday, June 28, Poirot joins forces with famed crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker, Harry Potter) to save Mrs. McGinty’s lodger, James Bentley (Joe Absolom, EastEnders), after he’s sentenced to death for her murder.

to prove once again that an object found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary. Eduardo Pagán, professor of history and American studies at Arizona State University, has signed on as guest co-host for this new season, joining Wesley Cowan, Gwendolyn Wright, Elyse Luray and Tukufu Zuberi in exploring the stories behind local folklore, prominent figures and family legends. The seventh season debut includes a PsychoPhone, which may have been invented by Thomas Edison to record messages from the afterlife; a cryptic letter from one soldier to another regarding the character of a dog trainer; and a watch fob com-

memorating Francisco “Pancho” Villa’s murderous raid on Columbus, New Mexico. The intrigue continues in the next installment, featuring a patent and an associated letter from the Atomic Energy Commission that might have had explosive results; a 23-pound block of beeswax carved with strange markings; and a French manuscript that may be a 160-year-old collection of family love poems.
