PATTERNS • JUNE 2012
New chapters By Mark Leonard, General Manager June marks the end of the fiscal year for Illinois Public Media and the departure of some very familiar faces. Along with many other employees at the University of Illinois, several staff members at WILL are retiring by the end of June. For many long-term employees, changes to retirement pension benefits beginning in July make it financially disadvantageous to remain. Among our departing staff members are David Inge (host of Focus), Celeste Quinn (host of The Afternoon Magazine), Harriet Williamson (radio producer for Focus), Rita Schulte (director of membership and marketing) and Rick Bigler (broadcast engineer). We are sad to see them go, but wish them well and hope that they stop back to see us! Our challenge now is to bring several new employees on board who can fill the (large) shoes of our departing friends—no small challenge! We are committed to continuing the on-air traditions that David, Celeste and Harriet have established— thoughtful daily talk programming. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on the qualities of Focus and The Afternoon Magazine that make them work so well, as well as a chance to refine the formats. Director of News and Public Affairs Craig Cohen is working on a long- term vision for both shows and will be filling in as replacement host of Focus beginning in July. We hope to be able to announce our permanent plans for these important programs by fall. On the membership-marketing side, it will be hard to replace Rita’s institutional knowledge, on-air enthusiasm and tireless efforts. We will be recruiting for several positions in this important area. In engineering, Rick Bigler is a transmitter specialist with a particularly deep understanding of our AM transmitter. You don’t notice a transmitter until it’s not working, and Rick has been one of the people called into service late at night, over weekends and on holidays to restore our transmitters to service when trouble strikes. At least now Rick can ignore the phone when it rings late at night during severe weather! We will miss our friends, but wish them the very best as they each begin new chapters in their lives.

Italian tenors earn their wings
Il Volo—Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble—have received unanimous raves for their vocal talent and showmanship. Since their May 2011 American debut, they have appeared on American Idol, The Tonight Show, Ellen, The Today Show, Good Morning America and Entourage. Now PBS is showcasing the trio in a new special, Il Volo Takes Flight, at 8:30 pm Wednesday, June 6, on WILL-TV. Filmed in a live performance at Detroit’s famed Opera House last October, the group sang operatic, pop and Italian classics. Backed by a 49-piece orchestra and five-piece rhythm section, Il Volo’s versions of “O Sole Mio,” “Il Mondo” and “E Più Ti Penso,” a medley of Ennio Morricone songs from the soundtracks to Once Upon a Time in America and Malena, and the Charlie Chaplin song, “Smile,” were met with standing ovations from the concert audience. The trio continued their magic with the well-known Neapolitan song, “Funiculì, Funiculà,” as well as a new Diane Warren original, “La Luna Hizo Esto.” In addition, world-class guitarist Milos Karadaglic accompanied the group to introduce the song “Granada.”
Get Il Volo’s debut album Being released worldwide this month—after receiving rave reviews in Italy—Il Volo’s first recording is available on CD as part of a combo premium package with your $150 pledge to WILL-TV. The package also includes a CD of music from Il Volo Takes Flight and a DVD or Blu-ray of the special.
After their debut on the Italian hit TV show, Ti Lascio Una Canzone (Leaving You a Song), Universal Music Group released Il Volo’s selftitled debut album in Italy in November 2010. Already certified gold and on its way to platinum status in their home country, the album will be released worldwide in June.

We’re looking after your health and fitness
A new special from fitness icon Kathy Smith addresses and provides solutions to the “personal energy crisis” of individuals over the age of 50. Kathy Smith Ageless Energy (7 pm Tuesday, June 5) provides tools to create a life plan that ensures continuing energy, stamina, strength and vitality. Smith, who turned 60 last year, offers easy-todo exercises, along with information that explains how movement, food and attitude impact personal energy levels. She also outlines her four pillars of energy, why energy is the key to staying youthful and the importance of functional fitness and strength training. Then at 8:30 pm, Blood Sugar Solution with Dr. Mark Hyman explores what he terms “diabesity,” outlines the underlying causes and provides a personalized plan to combat it. The program is based on his book of the same name, released in February 2012 and currently on The New York Times bestseller list. Dr. Hyman identifies seven keys to achieving wellness—optimizing nutrition, balancing hormones, cooling inflammation, fixing digestion, enhancing detoxification, boosting energy metabolism and calming the mind—plus shares a six-week action plan that includes exercise advice, stressreducing strategies, a menu plan with delicious recipes and much more. 2 PATTERNS • JUNE 2012

Sharing music from the Little House books
Just as the American family experience was documented by Laura Ingalls Wilder in her Little House on the Prairie books, Pa’s Fiddle celebrates the music that she heard as a child during her family’s adventures on America’s prairies in the years just after the Civil War. In Laura’s memories the music was played by her father on his fiddle—outdoors, by the potbelly stoves of
their many houses, at church services and at Saturday night socials. The program, which airs on WILL-TV at 8 pm Monday, June 4, features performances by Randy Travis, Rodney Atkins, Ronnie Milsap, Committed, Natalie Grant, Ashton Shepherd and The Roys, along with an allstar Nashville band led by Grammy-winner Randy Scruggs. Sequel to the Phantom Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spellbinding follow-up musical to the phenomenal Phantom of the Opera, picks up 10 years later to find the Phantom in New York’s Coney Island. A new special showcases the highly acclaimed Australian production, which Webber described as “one of the finest productions I’ve ever seen of my work, anywhere.” It features a 21-piece orchestra and an impressive cast, including musical actors Ben Lewis as the Phantom and Anna O’Byrne as Christine Daae. The program airs at 7 pm Saturday, June 2, to kick off the WILL-TV fundraising drive.

Antiques Roadshow’s first visit to Phoenix was in 1997, when Arizona’s biggest story was a UFO sighting dubbed the “Phoenix Lights.” Fast forward 15 years for new believe-it-or-not moments: “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” the original 1897 letter to the New York Sun, was appraised at $20,000 to $30,000 and gets a nice current value of $30,000 to $50,000; on the other hand, a circa 1890 mechanical bank, then worth $3,700, gets a lump of coal and a current value of $1,000 to $1,500. Vintage Phoenix airs at 7 pm Monday, June 18.

Simple questions prompt science revelations A new BBC series, History of Science, shows how the political upheavals of history combine with iconic inventions and discoveries, along with the ideas of great thinkers, to create the advances that have transformed our lives. At 7 pm Tuesdays, June 12, 19 and 26, two episodes on each of the evenings will begin with a disarmingly simple question and then delve into the past, uncovering human stories and recreating the great experiments of the men and women who sought answers. Discover how science has found out what we are made of; where we came from; and what exists beyond Earth. Find out how science revealed the hidden secrets of nature; how it provided the force to topple kings and emperors; and how it unleashed untold power from within our planet. It’s the story of how history made science, and science made history, and how the ideas that emerged made the modern world.

Signing off When I arrived at WILL in 1976, I had a bachelor’s degree in psychology and no plan for the rest of my life. As an undergraduate I had worked at WNIU-FM, the public radio station of Northern Illinois University. I saw that WILL had an opening and I drove down for an interview. I don’t know what he saw in me, but Don Mullally, the General Manager at the time, offered me a job. Radio was something I knew I could do and I thought the job would pay the rent while I figured out what I really wanted to do.

I will be forever grateful to Don and to WILL for giving me the opportunity to learn so much, to engage my curiosity and to talk with a host of fascinating people. Many listeners have said some very kind things about me and my program in our three decades together and I want to thank them as well. I also want to say a word of thanks to all of the people I have worked with. Had they not been such a fine bunch of folks, I would not have stayed so long.

I was asked recently what I had learned over all these years. The questioner was looking for a pearl of wisdom and I had none to offer at that moment. Forced to respond, I would offer this thought: there are no simple answers. Whatever the topic of conversation, it is always more complicated than you think it is. To my many failings you may add the tendency to be sympathetic with whomever I am talking with at the time. One thing I have learned is that I am not a big-city kind of guy. I have become rooted in the rich black soil of central Illinois and do not expect to leave anytime soon. Besides, I have the same problem I had when I came here more than 35 years ago. I have to come up with a plan for the rest of my life.
Toes were doing some serious tapping when Kevin Kelly hosted a group of oldtime piano players on WILL-FM’s Live and Local on May 17 in advance of the OldTime Piano Playing Contest in Peoria May 24-28. “We asked five contestants and former contestants to play for us at The Blind Pig in April and we recorded it.” Old-time is a style used in public venues like drinking establishments and ragtime competitions between 1890 and 1929. Andrea Seabrook at Uni High NPR congressional correspondent Andrea Seabrook said she loves having an excuse to ask “the inappropriate question.” Covering Congress for NPR is the best job in journalism, she said as she interacted with the students in Chris Butler’s class of seniors at Urbana University Laboratory High School. Illinois Public Media brought Seabrook to central Illinois for a two-day visit that included the appearance at Uni High. Seabrook told the students that although the news media often like to focus on what lawmakers say and what happens each day on the floor, she likes to pay attention to what members of Congress don’t say and on the meaning of the congressional action or non-action. She’s recently been investigating fundraising by members of Congress. “Your average member of Congress spends two to three hours a day raising money,” she said. “Pretty much every member wakes up every day saying, ‘Today I have to raise $10,000-$15,000.’ It is a huge part of what they do.” They’re raising money for their parties and for reelection, she said. Seabrook doesn’t believe that lobbyists or members of Congress who make

themselves accessible to lobbyists are corrupt. “The relationship between members of Congress and lobbyists is corrupt. It’s the system that is diseased. It pushes members of Congress toward corruption,” she said. There has been a noticeable dip in civility and bi-partisanship in Congress, she said. “People ask me if this is the worst that it’s ever been,” she said. “But if no one’s beating anyone with a cane then it’s not the worst it’s ever been, although in some ways beating someone with a cane is more functional than nothing happening at all.” Uni class member Sarah Yockey said students were impressed with Seabrook’s blunt assessment of the state of Congress. It spurred a good class discussion the next day. “We talk a lot in class about why good ideas aren’t going anywhere in Washington,” she said. After Seabrook’s visit, students talked about how people go in to Congress with good intentions, but get sucked into the system. “We talked about what could be done to change that,” she said. Seabrook also appeared on WILL-AM’s Focus and spoke to an audience at Campbell Hall during her visit.
