To each, his or her own By David Thiel, WILL-TV Program Director Recently, I was struck by an entertainment industry story that reported an eighth-place finish for the NBC television network on Thursday night. Its new legal drama, The Firm, landed behind not only competing broadcast fare on CBS, ABC and Univision, but also that of cable channels TNT, TBS and A&E. (Number one: MTV’s Jersey Shore. Yes, really.) There’s an important caveat here: the numbers reported were for the key demographic of adults aged 18-49, aka the Only People Advertisers Care About. In terms of overall viewership, CBS’ The Mentalist was on top with a little more than 14 million watching. PBS wasn’t represented in that article. Partially that’s because most public TV stations do their own local scheduling on Thursday nights, but it’s also because much of our audience falls outside the demographic group advertisers covet. What I found telling wasn’t just that NBC, once home to a powerhouse Thursday night lineup, had ceded ground to New Jersey shores. That report also spoke to the fragmentation of the television audience into ever smaller pieces. Less than five percent of the U.S. population tuned in to The Mentalist. The days when everyone watched the same handful of shows and chatted about them the next day are long gone. If you’re a cable or satellite subscriber, odds are there’s a channel out there that caters to your specific interests. (Might we someday see The Cats Wearing Clothing Channel? If so, I’d watch it!) Ironically, the massive audience erosion of the once all-powerful broadcast networks has been less of an issue for public television. We were programming for “niche” audiences long before anyone thought of devoting an entire network to C-list celebrities. It’s always been a part of our mandate to serve those who weren’t getting what they needed from the audience-magnet fare offered on commercial TV. But what we don’t do—unlike Food Network or a potential Cats Wearing Clothing Channel—is program to a single audience. On our primary TV service, you’ll find kids’ shows, how-to programs, travel, news, drama, comedy, history, science, biography, documentary and performance. (And if you want something that’s more narrowly focused, check out our World and Create channels.) WILL is an entire cable lineup in one place. We hope you agree!

To mark 2011 as the 25th anniversary year of The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh presented a lavish, fully staged production of the musical last October in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Great Performances captured the production, which comes to WILL-TV at 7 pm Sunday, March 4. Stars Ramin Karimloo as The Phantom and Sierra Boggess as Christine were chosen by Webber after their success in the London premiere of Love Never Dies, his sequel to Phantom. Both performers earned prestigious Olivier Award nominations for their roles.
Karimloo and Boggess are joined by Barry James as Monsieur Firmin, Gareth Snook as Monsieur André, Liz Robertson as Madame Giry and Wynne Evans as Piangi, together with a cast and orchestra of more than 200, including special guest appearances by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, the original Phantom and Christine. The Phantom of the Opera first opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre and is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Set against the glamour and spectacle of the Paris Opera House, Leroux told of a horribly disfigured Phantom, once a promising musician, who now terrorizes the opera company. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the Phantom is drawn to ingénue Christine Daae and begins coaching her secretly as a tragic romance unfolds between the pair.

Second in WILL Connect Series
Local challenges and successes for safe, affordable housing Champaign and Vermilion counties have seen many changes in their neighborhoods and housing stock since the nation’s economic decline. Among the challenges: more renters are competing for safe and affordable housing, a growing demand is putting stress on existing assistance programs and people sometimes have strong, often negative perceptions of lowincome housing. CU-CitizenAccess.org and Illinois Public Media are taking a comprehensive look at these issues during a day of programming Tuesday, March 27, on WILL-AM, WILL-TV and online.
the programming. CU-Citizen Access is a community journalism project of the University of Illinois College of Media with professional and student journalists. This examination of community housing issues is the second in the WILL Connect series in which Illinois Public Media is looking at issues identified in community conversations and listening sessions. The goal of the housing programming is not only to show problems with housing, but to highlight some innovative solutions already underway in our area and connect people to resources at our engagement website, willconnect.org.
The initiative will culminate that night in a live television program, Housing: A Basic Human Need, at 8 pm featuring stories about housing in the two counties and a roundtable discussion with local experts. Hosted by David Inge, the program will be videostreamed live at will.illinois.edu with a simultaneous online chat. Features include a look at Generations of Hope in Rantoul; a profile of homelessness in Champaign and what cities are doing to address it; and a look at a developer in Danville who turned the historic New Holland building into mixed income housing. Primary Election
2012
Bloomington physician David Gill and Greene County State’s Attorney Matt Goetten, the Democratic candidates running for Congress in the new 13th District, will meet in the WILL-TV studio for a debate hosted by Illinois Public Media in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Illinois. WILL-TV and WILL-AM 580 will broadcast the hour-long debate live at 7 pm Wednesday, March 14, with live video streaming on will.illinois.edu and an accompanying live Internet chat. Also broadcasting the debate live will be WEIU-TV, Charleston; KETC-TV, St. Louis; WUIS-FM, Springfield; and WGLT-FM, Bloomington. Illinois Public Media’s Jim Meadows will host the debate before a live studio audience, with three journalists joining him in asking questions. The 13th Congressional District stretches from Champaign-Urbana west to the Mississippi River and to the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis. The winner of the Democratic
primary faces the winner of the threeway Republican contest between U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson, now serving the 15th Congressional district that has been redrawn; Edwardsville veterinarian Michael Firsching; and tree-trimming business owner Frank Metzger from Glen Carbon. No Republican primary debate is planned at WILL because Johnson declined an invitation to appear in a primary debate, and Firsching and Metzger do not meet League of Women Voters campaign criteria for Congressional debate candidates. All five 13th District candidates will appear on WILL-AM’s Focus before the March 20 primary: Johnson, TBA; Firsching, 10 am Monday, March 5; Gill, 10 am Monday, March 6; Metzger, 11 am Friday, March 9; and Goetten, 11 am Wednesday, March 14. Tune in to WILL-AM and visit will.illinois. edu/election on primary election night for full coverage of the returns from central Illinois and around the country by NPR and Illinois Public Media News.
The Great BritCom Vote is March 3! Check out the candidates on page 18.

New host for Weekend Edition Sunday Rachel Martin is taking leave of her duties as NPR’s national security correspondent this year to fill in as host of Weekend Edition Sunday while permanent host Audie Cornish fills an assignment as host of All Things Considered. While serving as NPR’s point person on military and intelligence issues, Martin traveled regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan with the Secretary of Defense, reporting on the U.S. wars and the effectiveness of the Pentagon’s counterinsurgency strategy. She also covered the changing demographic of the U.S. military—from the debate over whether to allow women to fight in combat units—to the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” Martin was part of the team that launched NPR’s experimental morning news show, The Bryant Park Project, based in New York—a two-hour daily multimedia pro-

gram that she co-hosted with Alison Stewart and Mike Pesca. While serving as NPR’s religion correspondent in 2006-2007, Martin’s piece on Islam in America was awarded best radio feature by the Religion News Writers Association in 2007. As one of NPR’s reporters assigned to cover the Virginia Tech massacre that same year, she was on the school’s campus within hours of the shooting and on the ground in Blacksburg, Va., covering the investigation and emotional aftermath in the following days. In 20052006, she was based in Berlin, Germany, as a foreign correspondent for NPR. During this time, Martin covered the London terrorist attacks, the federal elections in Germany, the 2006 World Cup and issues surrounding immigration and shifting cultural identities in Europe.

march By 2006, thousands of new electric cars were purposely destroyed by the same car companies that built them. Today, the electric car is back with a vengeance. In Revenge of the Electric Car, director Chris Paine takes his film crew behind the closed doors of Nissan, GM, and the Silicon Valley start-up Tesla Motors to chronicle the story of the global resurgence of electric cars. Without using a single drop of foreign oil, this new generation of car is America’s future: fast, furious and cleaner than ever. With almost every major car maker now producing new electric models, Revenge follows the race to be the first, the best and to win the hearts and minds of the public around the world. It’s not just the next gen-
eration of green cars that’s on the line. It’s the future of the automobile itself. The film’s primary cast includes CEO and president of Renault and Nissan Carlos Ghosn; CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk; former vice chairman of GM Bob Lutz and EV do-it-yourselfer Greg “Gadget” Abbott. A free screening of the film and a discussion of the issues it raises will take place at 6 pm Tuesday, March 6, in Robeson Rooms A & B of the Champaign Public Library (200 W. Green St.). Illinois Public Media and the library are partners in presenting the 10-film Community Cinema series for 2011-2012. The film will be shown with closed captions for the hearing impaired and an English Sign Language interpreter will sign the discussion.
