We have reorganized ourselves internally, and many of us have expanded our roles and responsibilities. We’ve developed more partnerships with community organizations that have knowledge of needs and resources. That’s increasing our ability to connect people to local community resources. We’ve been out in the community listening more to your aspirations and challenges. This listening has helped guide our story selection, public affairs programming and online content. And now we are unveiling a new initiative called WILL Connect. That’s an umbrella term for the intersection of our local online and on-air content, and our work in communities in east central Illinois. The purpose of WILL Connect is to identify needs, and connect you to local resources and to each other. You can start to see these connections come together in two new ways: on a new website we’ve created, WILLConnect.org, and in a future on-air series called “WILL Connect.” Both focus on our region of east central Illinois and highlight community priorities. For example, in Macon, McLean and Champaign Counties, residents told us that reducing obesity by increasing opportunities for daily activity and access to healthy food is a priority. You’ll see this priority reflected in WILL Connect as we provide local content, resources and opportunities for you to participate in the conversation, get involved or seek help. You can find video clips of local cyclists from the Champaign area who ride their bikes to work sharing their stories of how they do it, how they keep safe and the benefits they’ve discovered from commuting on two wheels. The editor for WILLConnect.org is Celeste Quinn. You’ll still hear her on the air and you’ll also see her more often in the community and online. Sean Powers, our multiplatform journalist, is already producing new content for the WILLConnect.org site. We’ll also have a new community calendar for local organizations to post their events. We hope you’ll find WILL Connect to be helpful for you and your community.

Getting on the bus changed our country In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American society. Many states violently enforced the policy, while the federal government, under the Kennedy administration, remained indifferent, preoccupied with matters abroad. That is, until an integrated band of college students—many of whom were the first in their families to attend college—decided, en masse, to risk everything and buy tickets on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. These more than 400 black and white Americans called themselves the Freedom Riders. They endured beatings and imprisonment to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. Now on the 50th anniversary of these actions, award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Wounded Knee, The Murder of Emmett Till) has created an inspiring documentary for the American Experience series. Freedom Riders is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil-rights activists. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of youth and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds.

s Freedom Riders Joan Mulholland and C.T. Vivian

The program airs at 8 pm Monday, May 16, on WILL-TV.

The music of the civil rights movement American Experience: Soundtrack for a Revolution (8 pm Monday, May 9) tells the story of the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. This documentary blends heart-wrenching interviews, dramatic images and contemporary performances by top artists, including John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean and The Roots.

In the early days of WILL’s Internet service, there was no budget for developing our small site on the World Wide Web. Jack Brighton, then producing WILL-AM’s Focus 580, taught himself Web technology and design, and launched WILL’s first streaming service in 1998. “I realized we needed to be on the Web and we needed to get good at it,” he said. He went to campus surplus, found some “ancient but free” computer hardware, and began using it to archive WILL’s locally produced radio programs so people could listen to them online after the program aired on the radio. Now WILL’s website offers tens of thousands of streaming archives, making content available to a growing global audience. Jack, who gave up producing for radio to devote full-time to WILL’s new media in 2003, has built a number of websites, totaling some 100,000 Web pages, under the IPM umbrella. He is also responsible for social media, digital media systems integration, e-commerce and Web services. “I saw the Web as an incredible opportunity to be more effective in our mission,” said Jack. “The Internet represents a true revolution in media, where all previous forms come together in a global network that is available anywhere, anytime. Public media can do more to serve people than ever before, so why not take advantage of that?” In recognition of his valuable service to Illinois Public Media, the University of Illinois campus and the community, Jack was named a winner of the 2011 Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award in April. “Jack’s work in broadcasting has been consistently outstanding,” said IPM general manger Mark Leonard in his nominating letter. “But his contributions since the dawning of the Internet Age have truly set him apart as a leader and inspiration to others.” In addition to his work at Illinois Public Media, Jack has been deeply involved in the emerging Illinois Campus Webmasters community. He has helped cultivate a spirited community of collaboration on best practices and solutions for improving the quality and accessibility of campus websites, said Mark, and he is also an international leader in digital media archival standards and best practices, serving as chair of the News, Docu-

Bicycling safely for work and play As part of Illinois Public Media’s work with C-U Fit Families, we are partnering with other groups in planning and promoting C-U Bike to Work Day on Tuesday, May 3. Full details are on the event website, www. cubiketowork.com To help riders prepare, we partnered with Champaign Cycle, the Bike Project and the City of Urbana to sponsor a bike commuting workshop April 19 at the Urbana Free Library.

photo to come

May 21. It will take place near Urbana’s Market at the Square in the parking lot on the south side of Illinois St., next to Concord Custom Cleaners. This free, family event involves obstacle courses that help prepare kids to safely navigate routes and road traffic.

“It was rewarding to help people choose safe bike routes to and from their work places, along with sharing information on community resources that support safe biking,” said Kimberlie Kranich, Illinois Public Media’s director of community engagement. Illinois Public Media is also collaborating with the C-U Mass Transit District and C-U Safe Routes to School to offer the annual Bike Rodeo from 8 am to noon Saturday,

mentary and Television Committee of the Association of Moving Image Archivists. He is also an adviser on digital media strategy to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and a member of National Public Radio’s Digital Advisory Working Group. Jack says he has expended such effort on community, campus and national projects, in addition to his work at Illinois Public Media, because, to him, collaboration is everything. “Knowledge is best when it’s shared,” he said. “Things are moving so fast that there’s no way anyone can see everything and keep up with everything. We must collaborate to find a way forward.” Every day in his work, Jack says, he’s reminded of the Web’s huge impact on the world. “The Web is akin to the development of moveable type in terms of its effect on human culture,” he said. “But it’s more than just a powerful new way to get access to knowledge. It really provides universal access to creating and sharing knowledge. Anyone can publish globally, instantly. That’s revolutionary.”

Calling all parents and early childhood educators! WILL-TV is teaming up with the Champaign Public Library and Sid the Science Kid to introduce parents and teachers to new ways to make science appealing to kids. Join us for a special event at 2 pm Saturday, May 7, to learn how to create a Super Fab Lab in your school, home or child care center. We’ll meet in Robeson Rooms A and B of the Champaign Public Library (200 W. Green St.), where you can also explore hands-on resources from the Sid TV series and website, plus share your ideas with other parents and teachers. Space is limited, so you must preregister by calling the Champaign Public Library at 217-403-2030 before May 3. PATTERNS • MAY 2011 3

It’s okay to dig in the dirt, if you are a dirt detective. Kids in Mary Linnenburger’s Champaign Early Childhood Center classroom examined some soil with a magnifying glass as part of Illinois Public Media’s book mentor project in April. Book mentors read the book “Wonderful Worms” to the children, who also watched a video clip of Sid the Science Kid. Sid and the kids all learned that dirt is important because it helps things grow and contains tiny rocks, pieces of leaves and even living things like bugs and worms!

Tour

Join WILL-TV program director David Thiel for a trip throughout Britain visiting locations seen on Masterpiece, Doctor Who and more. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine will have a unique opportunity when executive producer Alan J. W. Bell takes us to see Sid’s Café and much more, on a private tour of Holmfirth, the Yorkshire village that is home to the series. Part of your package cost is a donation to support WILL.

The tour wraps up with guided tours of the capital, and a final free day in London. Group size is limited to 27 friends, so do not delay. For more information, phone us at WILL, 217-333-7300, or visit tourgrouppro.com/will.

We will fly in and out of the less-crowded Manchester, England airport. Our tour guide for the trip is Victor Seedman, a seasoned professional who is head of the Travel, Tourism and Hospitality program at the London campus of the University of Gloucestershire and a huge fan of the BBC/PBS Masterpiece Mystery series Morse and Inspector Lewis.

C-U Fit Families was named in March as one of six recipients of the Robin A. Orr Community Partnership Award presented to organizations throughout Illinois. The award was established to recognize Ms. Orr’s lifetime commitment to outstanding service for persons seeking to improve their nutrition and lifestyle.

In addition to our visits to Holmfirth (and plenty of Last of the Summer Wine sites), we’ll visit the town of Thirsk, hometown of the veterinarian who wrote the beloved All Creatures Great and Small. Brontë fans and others will enjoy visits to the family’s parsonage, and Haddon Hall, which represented Thornfield in the recent Masterpiece presentation of Jane Eyre.

Following her death in May 2010, Orr was lauded as a tireless advocate for the needy. A University of Illinois Extension Specialist, Orr’s passion was nutrition education, partnership development and food security. The Illinois Interagency Nutrition Council, which she helped establish, presented the award.

We’ll also visit Wales, keeping a special eye out for Doctor Who locations. Making our way to London, we will visit Lacock, Chippenham, which served as the fictional town of Cranford in the recent Masterpiece Classic production, and Highclere Castle featured in Downton Abbey.

Illinois Public Media founded and is an active participant in C-U Fit Families, a coalition connecting Champaign-Urbana community and university members who want to increase active living, reduce obesity and promote childhood wellness.

Community partnership award for C-U Fit Families

Community Cinema May: Welco me to Shelby ville

s Students recite the Pledge of Allegiance during ESL class.

Illinois Public Media’s community cinema offering for May, Welcome to Shelbyville, focuses on a small Tennessee town as it grapples with rapid demographic change and issues of immigrant integration. It captures the complexity of AfricanAmerican, Latino, white and Somali residents as their lives intertwine against the backdrop of a crumbling economy and the election of a new president. Join Illinois Public Media at 6:30 pm Tuesday, May 10, for a screening and audience-driven panel discussion of the Independent Lens documentary. The event, the fifth in Illinois Public Media’s Community Cinema series, takes place in Robeson Rooms A and B of the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., Champaign. It will be shown with closedcaptioning for the hearing impaired. A sign language interpreter will sign the pre-andpost film discussion.

African-American residents looked back at their segregated past, balancing perceived threats to their livelihood and security against the values that they learned through their own long struggle for civil rights. While the newcomers, mostly of Muslim faith, attempt to make new lives for themselves and their children, leaders in this deeply religious community try to guide their congregations through this period of unprecedented change. Through the vibrant and colorful characters of Shelbyville, the film explores immigrant integration and the interplay between race, religion, and identity in a changing America, creating an intimate portrayal of a community’s struggle to understand what it means to be American. For those unable to attend the screening, WILL-TV will broadcast Independent Lens: Welcome to Shelbyville at 9 pm Tuesday, May 24.

When the documentary was filmed, the economy was in crisis, factories were closing and jobs were hard to find. The local Tyson chicken plant was hiring hundreds of new Somali refugees, and when a local reporter initiated a series of articles about these newcomers, a flurry of controversy and debate erupted within the town. Just as the town’s Latino population began to grapple with their own immigrant identity, s Shelbyville resident overlooking the community’s Duck River.

McCollum documentary wins Peabody Award

Photo: L. Brian Stauffer, U of I News Bureau

The Lord Is Not On Trial Here Today, a documentary by University of Illinois associate professor of journalism Jay Rosenstein and produced in partnership with WILL-TV, was one of the winners of the 70th Annual Peabody Awards. The awards committee said: “A beautifully researched documentary by a Champaign, Ill., station, it examines a First Amendment case critical to the establishment of separation of church and state in public schools.” The film tells the personal story of Vashti McCollum’s lawsuit against the Champaign public school system after her son, Jim, was abused by classmates and punished by the school for not taking part in a voluntary Protestant religion class. After she lost in lower court decisions, she won a resounding 8-1 decision in the U.S. Supreme Court, establishing the foundation for the separation of church and state in public schools. Jay said he was stunned and humbled by the recognition provided by the award. “I am thrilled that this award will help a new generation of Americans learn about the 20 PATTERNS • MAY 2011

inspirational story and courage of the late Vashti McCollum,” he said. The award was possible because of the assistance of many people, especially WILL-TV and the Independent Television Service, as well as The Illinois Humanities Council, former U of I Chancellor Richard Herman, and the U of I College of Media and Department of Journalism, he said. The documentary recently won a 2011 Gracie Award for Outstanding Documentary from the Alliance for Women in Media, and also won two regional Emmy Awards (Mid-America Region), a CINE Golden Eagle, the Broadcast Education Association’s Best of Competition Award in the faculty long-form documentary division, and a bronze Telly Award in the documentary category. Rosenstein’s production debuted in October 2010 on WILL-TV, and will be rebroadcast in June. It is scheduled for distribution by PBS Plus in May. The broadcast schedule is available on the film’s website at www.thelordisnotontrial.com. The film is also being distributed to educational institutions and libraries through New Day Films.
