It’s the season of thankfulness, and I, of course, am continually grateful for the opportunity to work here at Illinois Public Media. It’s a pleasure to work in an environment where I always have good news to share with you here, and November is no different. Big things are happening with our joint venture Illinois Newsroom. Page 18 introduces you to our new executive editor, Scott Cameron. Read all about his experience in public media, as well as the plans for our statewide news collaboration. Niala Boodhoo and The 21st have joined forces with Joe Tek Yun at Technology Services at Illinois to bring social media’s hot topics to radio. The article on page 17 gives the details on how advertising students gain real-world experience as they help connect us directly to our listeners. And as always, it wouldn’t be November without our Farm Assets conference. Produced in cooperation with the University’s College of ACES, the conference continues to be one of the most popular for farmers across the state in preparation for the next growing season. BS presents the classic Lucy Maud Montgomery story of a young girl’s life on Prince Edward Island, L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, at 7 pm on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 24. Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming, said she is excited to bring the film to viewers on Thanksgiving evening, as it is a great example of the “quality, family-friendly programming PBS strives to provide during the holiday season and all year long.” L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables tells the story of Anne Shirley, a precocious young girl taken from an orphanage and placed in the care of the uptight Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew. The conservative Marilla has a profound effect on the adventurous Anne and creates a journey of learning and personal engagement that has resonated with generations since L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908. The book remains an iconic work of Canadian
literature and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Directed by John Kent Harrison and based on the original script by Susan Coyne, this adaptation, filmed in Canada, stars critically acclaimed actor Martin Sheen. Sheen has previously appeared in blockbuster films such as The Amazing Spider Man and The Amazing Spider Man 2, and played the President of the United States in the multi-Emmy winning series The West Wing. In the film, Sheen portrays Matthew Cuthbert, one half of the brother-sister couple who care for Anne Shirley. Additional cast members of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables include 14-year old Ella Ballentine as Anne Shirley; Sara Botsford as Marilla Cuthbert; Julia Lalonde as Diana Barry; Kate Hennig as Rachel Lynde; Stefani Kimber as Josie Pye; Drew Haytaoglu as Gilbert Blythe; Kyle Gatehouse as Mr. Phillips; and Linda Kash as Mrs. Barry. Journalism Assistant Professor Charles “Stretch” Ledford met Yemaya Bordain in the summer of 2014 while Bordain was a Ph.D. student in electrical and computer engineering. Throughout their discussion, Ledford learned that Bordain would be the first African-American woman to be awarded the degree, a feat she achieved in 2015. Inspired by her story and others, Ledford launched the Black Science Matters movement. Ledford worked with University of Illinois students in journalism, graphic design, and industrial and computer engineering to produce eight short films. The films tell the stories of black students in STEM (Science, 2 PATTERNS • NOVEMBER 2016

Technology, Engineering, Math) programs and their experiences. Now featured as a WILL web series, #blacksciencematters explores the challenges faced by minority students that want to study STEM areas, from financial assistance, unsupportive environments, and difficult curriculums.

In order to provide 21st century radio for the 21st state, The 21st’s executive producer Niala Boodhoo and her staff know they need to develop stories that are relevant to the people of Illinois. The idea is not just to start conversations, but join ones that are already happening. So – social media is a natural outlet. “Tools like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit give us the advantage of connecting with our listeners on a personal level,” said Boodhoo, Host/EP of the daily talk show. “But we wanted to take it one step further.” That’s when Joe Tek Yun and Nick Vance stepped in. As the Leader of Social Media Analytics at Technology Services of Illinois, Yun also teaches Advertising 490-Social Media Analytics. Yun and Vance describe their role as one that helps University officials listen to and analyze all social media regarding the school. “It’s a great way to gauge the climate of a topic, both locally and nationally,” Yun said. “How often are people discussing it, in what way, is it primarily student-led or is it faculty and staff? All of this information helps officials determine what is important to the University in real time.” The 21st staff was interested in that, as well.
“We want to know not just what’s relevant to listeners throughout Illinois, but what people are talking about,” Boodhoo said. “Joe’s team of colleagues and students make that possible – to not just quickly find out what’s trending in Illinois, but also reach out to provide a deeper analysis. The University has access to social media repositories that contain searchable information of almost every public Tweet, Facebook post, blog site or comment posted to newspaper sites. The information can be narrowed down not just to geographic location, but can also indicate which people are getting the most attention online. “Say, for example, someone in Illinois is tweeting about their new favorite book,” Boodhoo explained, “and that book happened to be on one of the summer readings lists the show put together. Joe and Nick help us locate those people, tell them we’re going to be talking about their favorite new book on the show – and invite them to listen and join our conversation.” For Yun, the experience shows his students how the classroom applies to real life. “These students can now walk into a job interview and say, ‘I can make your social media work for you.’ That’s something that will set them apart, that will lead to success after college.” PATTERNS • NOVEMBER 2016 17

appoints a leader for Illinois Newsroom Illinois Newsroom—the statewide, sevenstation journalism collaborative, spearheaded by Illinois Public Media and funded through a $715,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) as well as support from the public media partner newsrooms—launches with the appointment of a new leader. Scott Cameron, former senior editor of NPR’s Talk of the Nation and current director of news and public affairs at Illinois Public Media, has accepted the executive editor position to lead the regional news collaborative. “This is a strong group of partners that’s come together with an ambitious goal: Transform the way public media journalism informs and engages our communities. I’m excited to help build the team and infrastructure that will serve Illinois audiences with the best news and information available on any platform,” said Cameron. Cameron will lead a team of seven journalists, headquartered across Illinois, and will be responsible for executing the overall editorial strategy of this news collaboration, established to expand the partner stations’ ability to provide comprehensive reports, series, investigations, and video programs across all platforms. “By leveraging the skills, resources and strengths of each of the partners, we will serve local, regional and national audiences in ways we never could individually as stations,” continued Cameron. “Each newsroom already produces strong, communityfocused journalism; Illinois Newsroom will increase our capacities to provide national-

quality, in-depth, multi-platform enterprise and investigative reporting as well as community engagement.” Under his leadership, Illinois Newsroom reporters and editors will deliver in-depth coverage around three key topics—education, health and environment, and state politics and policy—to regional and national audiences. “NPR Illinois | 91.9 UIS is looking forward to being a partner station in the Illinois Regional Journalism Collaborative (RJC) led by Scott Cameron as executive editor. Scott’s experience at NPR with Talk of the Nation at WGN, and WILL will lead the RJC to inform Illinoisans further on the state of our state,” said Randy Eccles, general manager of NPR Illinois. Additionally, Illinois Public Media was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Robert
R. McCormick Foundation through the Democracy Program to support Illinois Newsroom earlier this year, with the objective of strengthening the digital-first journalism model and regional engagement. For Cameron this means starting by equipping reporters and editors with the proper tools to create the right content, at the right time, for the right audiences, on the right platforms. “I’m thrilled to have Scott—someone who is so clearly committed to thoughtful journalism, engagement, innovation, and public service through public media—lead Illinois Newsroom,” said Moss Bresnahan, CEO and president of Illinois Public Media. “With his veteran years of experience, both here and at NPR, I know Scott will lead this team in producing stories that are relevant, informative and innovative with a digital-first journalism approach”
Illinois Newsroom collaborating public media stations are Illinois Public Media (WILL-Urbana); WTVP-TV (Peoria); NPR | Illinois Public Radio (WUIS-Springfield and Pittsfield); WSIU (Carbondale, Mt. Vernon and Olney); Tri-States Public Radio (Macomb and Galesburg, Ill., Keokuk and Burlington, Iowa); WVIK Quad Cities (radio, Rock Island); and WEIU-TV (Charleston). They will work with the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting (Champaign-Urbana) and Brant Houston, Knight Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Media, opening up opportunities to students and faculty across the state. The collaboration will produce journalism for partner stations and work with national programs, including PBS NewsHour and NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Illinois Public Media is excited to partner again with the Illinois Corn Growers Association and the Illinois agricultural community to present the 2016 Farm Assets Conference on Tuesday November 22nd at the Marriot Hotel in Normal, Illinois in conjunction with the Illinois Corn Growers Association’s annual meeting. This event is a great opportunity to visit with agricultural leaders and discuss challenges facing the industry. A November institution for the agricultural community in Illinois, the Illinois Commodity Conference has evolved into the Farm Assets Conference. For more than twenty years, WILL’s Ag Department has hosted an Ag Outlook Conference at the Beef House in Covington, Indiana that
draws well over three hundred farmers and leaders. In 2014 WILL hosted its first Farm Assets Conference in Normal the day before the Illinois Commodity Conference. The event drew over 200 participants. Afterward, Illinois Public Media and the Commodity Conference organizers agreed to merge the two Fall conferences into one. Last year’s conference drew more than 300 people. More importantly, the meeting brought together both ag industry leaders with farmers who work in the field every day. The 2016 Farm Assets Conference will be hosted by WILL-AM and Todd Gleason, one of the premiere voices of Illinois Agriculture. Todd is backed with the resources of the University of Illinois’ College of ACES and Extension service. Information about last year’s conference can be found online at: www.farmassetsconference.com.
