A Message to Our Members I recently received a note from a Friend

of WILL who said he bought a new car that had a defective radio. He couldn’t get WILL. And that’s when he realized just how important our station is to him. As a result, he said he is planning to increase his support with his next pledge. This Friend’s note was indeed timely, as it arrived just minutes before I sat down to write my annual message to you about our October pledge drive. While I certainly do not wish a broken radio on you, I do hope you will take a moment to consider the role WILL plays in your life and how much you value having it available to you when you want it. I’m sure you’ve heard and read about the significant financial challenges we have been working to overcome lately. If not, please drop me a line and I would be more than happy to detail them for you.

from Radio Station Manager Jay Pearce But as important as it may be to point out the need for Friends to help us make up for these draconian cuts in government funding, I don’t want our fundraising message to appear to be a scare tactic. Rather, when you receive a letter from me or hear an announcement on the air soliciting funds, I hope you will join our Friend with the new car in taking a moment to think about how important WILL is to you. Then base your decision on how much to contribute. Maybe you’re enjoying more news and information now that you can better hear AM 580’s programs after sunset on FM 90.9 HD-2. Maybe you are happy that, after a five year absence, Fresh Air is returning to WILL-AM (weekdays at 7 pm). Maybe you appreciate our continuing commitment to classical music on WILL-FM. All of this was possible due to the support of Friends like you.

Take some time. Enjoy. Reflect. Maybe even turn the radio off for a day and see if you miss it. Then I hope you will act. Our pledge drive begins with a Power Hour at 7 am on October 16. And, to our Friend with the new car—I hope it at least had a good dose of new car smell!

Making History, Making Choices It has been called one of the most historic presidential elections in our nation’s 232 years, pitting the iconoclast against the newcomer, the heroic prisoner of war against the first African American nominated by a major party. As in other years, PBS programming on WILL-TV explores this 2008 presidential election with insight into the issues and candidates. They are the most recent wave of new participants in the U.S. electoral process, but will Latinos coalesce as a voting bloc in the manner of two previous waves—Irish Americans and African Americans—to continue their influence on the nation’s future? On Wednesday, October 8 at 9 pm, Latinos ’08 offers a fresh examination of how today’s candidates and advocacy groups are working to attract and mobilize Latino voters. The documentary explores which of the current strategies—from get-out-the-vote campaigns to bilingual blogs to mariachi theme songs—is working. Also included is commentary on the effectiveness of Latino politicians in advancing the interests of their constituents while promoting ethnic unity.

and their ascent to their party’s nominations. On October 2 at 8 pm, Gwen Ifill of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Washington Week, moderates the Vice Presidential Debate between the Democratic and Republican nominees, live from Washington University in St. Louis. The second Presidential Debate on October 7 at 8 pm features unde-

cided voters posing questions to the candidates. Tom Brokaw moderates the action, live from Belmont University in Nashville. With a focus on foreign policy, Bob Schieffer moderates the third Presidential Debate on October 15 at 8 pm, live from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. WILL-AM will broadcast the three debates live.

On the Issues in Illinois: For the People The issues of energy and the economy are front and

center in this year’s presidential election. In a series on Thursday nights in October, WILL-TV and experts from the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) will examine how the positions of presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain on these issues would affect people in Illinois. The series, For the People: Election 2008, will also look at the ballot question on whether Illinois needs a Constitutional Convention, and end with an hour-long roundtable discussion about the presidential campaign with a panel scheduled to include former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar.

When Frontline first aired a profile of presidential candidates during the 1988 election, The Choice redefined political journalism on television. Now on October 14 at 8 pm, The Choice 2008 tells a deeper political story about Barack Obama and John McCain, the decisions they made and why their nominations may indicate a historic change in American politics.

Programs and scheduled panelists are:

10/23, 7:30 pm - Constitutional Convention: Brian Gaines and Richard J. Winkel, both of IGPA (8 pm on AM 580)

WILL’s John Paul, above, will moderate the discussions.

The advice that Dianne Noland and

her Illinois Gardener panelists provide each week as part of WILL-TV’s call-in program will soon be dispensed far and wide all around the state.

WILL-TV’s Illinois Gardener to Air Statewide

Public TV stations from Chicago to Carbondale, and all areas in between, will begin airing the program in October. “It gives us a chance to inform, educate and entertain more people in Illinois about gardening,” said Dianne. “We’re excited to be able to reach an additional audience.” WEIU in Mattoon-Charleston, WUSI in Olney, WSIU in Carbondale, WYCC in Chicago and WTVP in Peoria will offer the program to their viewers beginning in October. WSEC in Springfield, WMEC in Macomb and WQEC in Quincy are also making plans to offer the program.

Intimate Conversations Return to WILL-AM

Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, returns to WILL-AM this month, airing at 7 pm weeknights beginning October 1. One of public radio’s most popular offerings, the program’s intimate conversations are heard each week by nearly 4.5 million people on NPR stations across the country, as well as in Europe on the World Radio Network. “Ever since we had to drop Fresh Air from our schedule five years ago, listeners have consistently asked to have the program back. NPR also wanted the program back on WILL,” said WILL radio station manager Jay Pearce. “This year, despite our much publicized financial challenges, we are finally able to return the program PATTERNS • OCTOBER 2008

to the air thanks to listener support and NPR’s willingness to work with us to get Terry Gross back on the air for our audience.” Though Fresh Air has been categorized as a “talk show,” it hardly fits the mold. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with “probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insights.” And a variety of top publications count Gross, right, among the country’s leading interviewers. The show gives interviews as much time as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics and commentators. Fresh Air is produced at WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and broadcast nationally by NPR.

tions about insects, flower and vegetable gardening, trees and lawn care. Her style of engaging and encouraging people, whether experienced or novice gardeners, puts callers at ease. She hopes to add experts from all over the state to her rotating panel of guests, which already includes 31 experts. “I have former students all over the state that I can tap to participate,” she said. She said when the viewing area for the show becomes larger, it won’t be hard to tailor advice for various parts of the state. “We’re all in the same plant growth zone, zone 5,” she said. “Daffodils may bloom in Southern Illinois in early March, in central Illinois in mid-March and in Chicago the early part of April. But there’s not a huge difference. And trees are trees no matter where they are in the Midwest. So we can answer viewers’ questions about their area, but our advice will also be applicable in other areas.” In its 16th year on WILL-TV, Illinois Gardener can be seen at 7 pm Thursdays and 11 am on Saturdays. WILL-AM 580 will begin airing the audio of Illinois Gardener at 6:30 am Saturdays in October.

More Radio Stations Air WILL-AM’s Ag Reports WHPO-FM radio in Hoopeston

has joined the growing list of stations airing the WILL-AM’s Closing Market Report, which brings to six, including WILL, the number of stations airing the program. Five regional stations also air Commodity Week. Other stations airing the Closing Market Report are WHOW-AM 1520, Clinton; WKEI-AM 1450, Kewanee; WTIM-FM 97.3, Taylorville; and WGFA-FM 94.1, Watseka. AM 580 agriculture director Dave Dickey says that the growing number of stations airing the Closing Market Report and Commodity Week underscores the need for sound agricultural marketing analysis on the airways. “It is a testimony to the work of Closing Market Report

and Commodity Week host Todd Gleason and our stable of outstanding brokers, cash grain dealers, and meteorologists,” he said. “The information they provide is critical to producers and agri-businesses in making smart marketing decisions.” The map above shows the counties in which the programs can now be heard with a reliable signal.

Greet your trick-or-treaters with

The Scariest Music of All Time! Join us on FM 90.9 from 4:06 to 8 pm this Halloween as we

once again air The Scariest Music of All Time! This special program, produced at WILL-FM and newly-revised and expanded, is the perfect soundtrack for greeting and treating neighborhood goblins and ghosts at your door, as each hour of our macabre mood music, from the worlds of classical and film music, is presented uninterrupted and without talk! Bring along a portable radio while you trick or treat with your young ones, or have it playing on your porch or in your living room as you greet your neighborhood trick-or-treaters. It’s a great way to introduce kids to the sounds of classical music, and for getting a Halloween get-together for grown-ups off on the right note too! But wait, there’s more: because Halloween falls on Friday this year, the last hour of our broadcast will feature The Scariest Jazz of All Time!

examination at historic unrest in 1968 America and 2008 Pakistan as it opens a new season.

Combining bold original animation with extraordinary archival footage, writer/director/producer Brett Morgen explores the buildup to and unraveling of the infamous conspiracy trial of the Chicago Seven. Visceral and emotional, the film brings viewers inside the courtroom to experience firsthand the riveting drama, legal wrangling and raucous political theater. Chicago 10 portrays the struggle of young Americans attempting to confront an oppressive and armed government—their own. In Dinner with Musharraf, Pakistani filmmaker Sabiha Sumar and Sri Lankan codirector Satha Sathananthan sat down with Pakistan’s president, Pervez Musharraf, to address his ideas of a democratized society in their country. The directors engaged Musharraf in conversation about his political past and vision for the future and asked the bold question—how does an army general plan to establish democracy in Pakistan?

Inside WILL Two Emmy Nominations for WILL-TV Two WILL-TV programs, both part

of the station’s Central Illinois World War II Stories project, were nominated for regional 2008 Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Chapter. The winners will be announced at an October 4 presentation in St. Louis. An hour-long special, which aired as part of the 2008 season of WILL-TV’s Prairie Fire, was nominated in the arts/entertainment program/special category. It included stories about USS Indianapolis survivors, the life of a Japanese-American in an internment camp, and the survivor of a kamikaze attack on the USS Missouri. Other stories featured the experiences of a remarkable woman who served on the front lines in Europe for the American Red Cross, a man who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and one of the first female navigation instructors.

The hour-long documentary and the video story were produced by WILL-TV’s Denise La Grassa, edited by Eleanore Stasheff and researched by David Noreen. Henry Szujewski was executive producer. Both the World War II special and the Elmer Jones story can be viewed at www.will. illinois.edu/prairiefire.

The other nomination, in the historical/cultural program story/feature category, was for a Prairie Fire story about Tuskegee Airman Col. Elmer Jones, one of six original aviation cadets for the Tuskegee Airmen trained at Chanute Field in Rantoul. Jones, who became ground crew commander, served his country in aircraft engineering in an all-black unit during World War II. He maintains that being in a segregated unit provided an unexpected opportunity for the Tuskegee Airmen. They were able to prove their abilities at a time when people questioned whether African Americans should be allowed to fly and maintain planes.

s Clockwise from top: WILL-TV producer Denise LaGrassa, right, with Yuki Llewellyn and a famous photo of Llewellyn as a child in a Japanese internment camp; Jill Knappenberger, who served with the Red Cross on the front lines in Europe; Tuskegee Airman Elmer Jones.
