Saturday Specials: Lebanon, Sickle Cell and Boat Building This month the Saturday Specials
begin with a focus on local stories in the monthly news/magazine show Sidetrack at 6 pm October 4, and continue with an emphasis on international issues. Located at the crossroads of East and West, Lebanon often serves as the battleground for wider conflicts in the Middle East and its highly sectarian population has endured decades of infighting. Now, after six months without a president, the country’s situation seems even more precarious. In America Abroad: Battleground Lebanon, hosts Ray Suarez and Deborah Amos explore the roots of Lebanon’s instability and examine America’s failed attempt in the 1980s to bring peace to the beleaguered nation. The 6 pm October 11 program also investigates the

growing political influence of Hezbollah and travels to Syria to look at the role of foreign powers in Lebanon’s chronic volatility. Chasing the Crescent Moon, 6 pm Saturday, October 18, relates the journey of Dr. Kwaku Ohene-Frempong, from his childhood in Ghana to becoming a Yale scholar, an Olympic athlete and one of the most important international warriors against sickle cell. Dr. Frempong heads the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and established in Ghana the only citywide newborn screening for sickle cell in all of West Africa, where 1 in 50 babies suffers from the illness. In Ghana alone, he has screened more than 200,000 newborns.
Join WILL This Month at the Farmer’s Market!
s When positive sickle cell tests happen, Nurse Hannah has to go on foot to the baby's parents.
The Story of Lata, 6 pm Saturday, October 25, explores the efforts by the people of a remote part of the Solomon Islands to preserve their traditional boat building culture and navigation. The program blends personal reflections by the region’s older women, who consider it their role to revive the tradition, with the realities of adapting to modern life. Underlying this story is the myth of Lata, which guides a profound understanding of time and space necessary to the individuals involved in the ancient art of Polynesian navigation.
