“Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” This quote from Helen Keller perfectly describes this issue of Patterns. The theme of collaboration runs throughout the articles, proof that we can do so much more when we are united with others. Primarily, we continue our joint venture with WTVP in Peoria through the promotion of David Thiel. Page 17 tells how he will now act as content director for both stations, a step forward in uniting our two entities. Our cover story includes details for a sneak peek viewing of Hamilton’s America, a documentary on the acclaimed musical. Guests of the event at Champaign Public Library will get a preview of this behind-the-scenes film from Great Performances, as well as the chance to win prizes. And finally, our collaboration at Illinois Public Media is often as simple as people helping people. A photo on page 20 shows the many donations we as a staff sent to our colleagues at Louisiana Public Broadcasting affected by flooding. The staff here at IPM prove to me every day what Helen Keller knew: collaboration is the key to success. I’m proud to be part of such an organization.

Hamilton’s America, the documentary film that brings history to vivid life through the lens of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon Hamilton – winner of 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize – airs at 8 pm Friday, October 21 as the season premiere of the PBS Arts Fall Festival. The story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, which saw Hamilton killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. But the full story of this political genius – a poor immigrant who built himself up from nothing to become one of the nation’s most vital architects – has largely been forgotten by history…until now. Today, Hamilton’s fan club is vocal and growing, thanks, in no small measure, to Tony, Grammy, and Emmy-winning composer and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical. With its young cast claiming America’s history as its own, Hamilton is redefining how audiences learn about history. Directed by Alex Horwitz, Hamilton’s America delves even deeper into the creation of the show, revealing Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Further fleshing out the story is newly shot footage of the New York production with its original cast, trips to historic locations, such as Mt. Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda and other cast members, and a surprising range of interviews with prominent personalities, experts, politicians, and musicians, including President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Secretary Hank Paulson, Secretary Timothy Geithner, and Stephen Sondheim. Hamilton’s America shows just how timeless the hot-button issues of today’s America are: immigration, states’ rights, debt, income inequality, and race relations. These were the same fights that defined Hamilton’s time, and they are the driving force of Miranda’s historic work. The film endeavors to brush the dust off American history, much as the musical does, and provide a unique new way for us to view our national heritage and current political landscape.

35th season of Nature begins October 12 Nature’s fall 2016 schedule kicks off Season 35 with Super Hummingbirds at 7 pm Wednesday, October 12. Filmmaker Ann Johnson Prum returns with her second film on the hummers that presents new scientific breakthroughs about the super powers of the world’s smallest birds. Narrated by actress Patricia Clarkson, high speed camerawork captures their ability to fly backwards, upside-down, and float in mid-air. For the first time, viewers will see the colorful dazzlers mate, lay eggs, fight, and raise families in intimate detail.

At 7 pm Wednesday, October 26, Giraffes: . Africa’s Gentle Giants investigates what it takes to relocate a herd of wild giraffes in Africa, whose population is being threatened by poaching and oil drilling. One determined man named Dr. Julian Fennessy, his supportive family, and dedicated Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and veterinarians are about to find out. The delicate operation involves capturing and transporting a herd of Rothschild’s giraffes, the world’s rarest giraffe, to a safe sanctuary across the Nile River. Any mistake could be costly, not only for the giraffes being moved but also for an entire species.

My Congo at 7 pm Wednesday, October 19 is the first-hand account of wildlife cameraman Vianet Djenguet’s return visit to his homeland after spending many years in Europe. He seeks to reveal the beauty and majesty of the Republic of Congo and its people by traveling to his favorite locations to watch and film a diversity of wildlife from forest elephants to Western lowland gorillas. Djenguet’s journey is also one of self-discovery as he makes his way through the remote Northern rainforest that was his great-grandfather’s homeland. It is there that he is in for an emotional surprise.

Throughout American history, Latinos were often kept from the ballot box through the use of poll taxes, gerrymandering, and outright intimidation. Willie Velasquez’s 1974 Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project (SVREP) changed the face of American politics by harnessing the power of the Latino vote in unprecedented ways. Velasquez launched over a thousand voter registration drives in 200 cities, creating a movement that has continued to grow in power each year. “Today there are over 27 million eligible Latino voters,” said Sandie Viquez Pedlow, executive producer and executive director of Latino Public Broadcasting. “By encouraging Latinos to become invested in the democratic process by registering to vote, Willie Velasquez and SVREP paved the way for the continually increasing power of Latinos at the polls.” Willie Velasquez: Your Vote Is Your Voice, narrated by Luis Valdez, premieres at 9:30 pm Monday, October 3.

Is the American Dream alive and well? At 9 pm Friday, October 7, Dream On investigates the perilous state of the American Dream after decades of rising income inequality and declining economic mobility. In an epic road trip, political comedian John Fugelsang retraces the journey of Alexis de Tocqueville, whose study of the United States of America in 1831 came to define the country as a place where anyone, of any background, could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Following in the Frenchman’s footsteps, Fugelsang asks whether the optimistic spirit of the American Dream that Tocqueville popularized is alive and well in the twenty-first century, or whether George Carlin was right when he famously quipped, “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.” PATTERNS • OCTOBER 2016 3

WILL Content Director
David Thiel assumes WTVP programming duties Two years ago, Moss Bresnahan began his work as president and CEO of both WILL and WTVP, kicking off an unprecedented collaboration between the two stations. Now, that partnership grows stronger as David Thiel, WILL’s longtime content director, takes on programming duties at the Peoria-based station as well. “After the death of beloved WTVP colleague Stacey Tomczyk this past April, WTVP’s programming leadership has been in a transitional state. Extensive discussions with directors at both stations led me to the decision to merge programming duties under one manager,” said Bresnahan. Thiel was the logical choice for the role. After 19 years as WILL’s content director, he’s ready to tackle programming both stations. “I welcome the challenge of working out the details of this unique partnership. While some public TV stations contract with programming services from entirely different regions of the US, I live right here in central Illinois and travel to Peoria frequently. My personal relationship
with the staff of WTVP goes back more than 25 years, and I can’t imagine a better partner.” Bob Culkeen, interim chief operating officer at Illinois Public Media, said, “David’s responsibilities will include working directly with WTVP staff to recommend and create their television schedule. This is a great example of how our collaboration works to create operational efficiencies in support of our strategic plan.” Congratulations, David!

Chicago walking tour On Thursday, October 13, join WILL on a trip up to Chicago to partake of a walking tour of Chicago’s great skyscrapers. Kevin Hinders, U of I Associate Professor of Architecture and member of the Chicago Architecture Foundation, will act as our tour guide as we experience Chicago’s loop on foot. Our excursion will follow in the footsteps of Geoffrey Baer, host of the television program Chicago’s Loop: A New Walking Tour. It will include Chicago’s most iconic buildings. This fundraising event is $120 per Friend and includes the bus trip to and from Chicago, lunch in Cellars Market on the lower level of the historic Chicago Board of Trade building, and the walking tour.
The bus will leave WILL parking lot B-22 at 8:30am on the 13th. Depending on weather conditions and time of travel, we may be able to make a bonus stop before returning home. Guests should be prepared to walk two miles in rain or shine, including climbing stairs. Register by October 5 by calling 1-800-898-1065
