A Message to Our Members As I sit writing this column on
October 1, I wonder what our financial markets will look like when this column is published. It has been a frightening sight to watch our economic institutions implode during September, and wonder what the long term implications of their collapse will be. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the specter of economic collapse will have passed, and we are looking at stabilized credit and investment markets. Amid the economic uncertainty, WILL received some promising financial news in September. WILL has been awarded two significant grants, one for funding an emergency generator for our FM and television transmitter in Monticello, and one to fund expansion of WILL’s Youth Media Workshop. Details on the Youth Media grant are on page 19 of this issue of Patterns. In the case of the generator, WILL had applied to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration PATTERNS • November 2008
16 14 from General Manager Mark Leonard Public Television Facilities Program (NTIA/PTFP) for funding last spring. With severe thunderstorms, ice and snow a routine part of central Illinois’ weather, WILL suffers from frequent power outages due to severe weather. This has been a frustration to viewers, listeners and staff members as we often lose our signal at times of critical need for weather and public safety information. The projected cost of a suitable generator is approximately $140,000, and the federal grant will pay about $67,000 of that total. With the most skilled weather forecasting staff in the region, to be off the air in times of weather emergencies was unacceptable. We will be seeking funding for the remaining cost of the generator from local businesses and foundations, as well as individual donors. If you are interested in participating, please contact Danda Beard, our Director of Major Giving. I hope that you agree that this is a critical investment, despite the challenges of the current economy.
In my September column, I described the conservative budget planning that WILL had gone through for the current fiscal year, and why realignment in resources was necessary. The guiding principle in our decision making was to seek efficiencies where possible, identify areas of strategic investment to improve WILL’s competitiveness, and increase service to our community. We have put an increased emphasis on seeking external funding for both new and existing activities, as well as capital equipment projects. I am pleased to point to these two new grants as a successful beginning. WILL is healthy and strong. We have been pruning the branches a bit over the past year, but with an eye toward the health of the root ball. Your continued financial support helps us to look past the current challenges, and make the important strategic investments for the long term strength of your public broadcast stations.
“Aw”-Inspiring Images and a Serious Look at Panda’s Plight
Since making her entrance into the world, Zhen Zhen,
fourth in the line of San Diego’s “royal family,” has captivated legions with her antics and charm. Panda Tales, airing on WILL-TV at 7 pm Sunday, November 30, chronicles the giant panda cub’s first year at the San Diego Zoo. Amid the story of Zhen Zhen’s progress, an unexpected storyline emerged nine months into filming. A massive earthquake in China on May 12 struck in the heart of panda country. At Wolong, many of the giant panda enclosures were destroyed or severely damaged. Panda Tales captures the zoo team’s concern for their colleagues in China, as well as plans to aid in the breeding center’s rebuilding. Though there is no shortage of endearing clips of Zhen Zhen as she grows, Panda Tales is much more than a collection of “aw”-inspiring images. The program takes a serious look at the plight of the giant panda and how the zoo’s program has affected the resurgence of this species.

Heroism Personified Medal of Honor, a PBS documentary
premiering Wednesday, November 5, at 8 pm, presents the powerful stories of those who have received our nation’s highest military award for valor in combat, and explores fundamental questions about what it means to have the courage of a hero. The film traces the history of the award, from a profile of Sgt. Paul Smith, the first soldier to receive the award in the Iraq War, back to its origins during the Civil War. Among those profiled are a Holocaust survivor who single-
handedly defended a hill from an advancing enemy force in the Korean War; an injured Navy SEAL who saved the lives of two comrades by swimming for two hours to bring them to safety; and a Marine at Iwo Jima, who alone silenced seven Japanese bunkers with a flamethrower to clear a path for his demoralized company. Through intimate accounts of fear and the realities of surviving war, movingly told by 13 living recipients, the program showcases these extraordinary acts of heroism for which the medal has been awarded.

Viva Violin! Live from Lincoln Center’s Gil Shaham and Orpheus at the Penthouse showcases celebrated violinist Gil Shaham’s performance of music by composer Pablo de Sarasate, broadcast from Lincoln Center’s intimate Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. A composer best known for infusing Spanish themes into the classical music of the Romantic period, Sarasate was an accomplished violinist who wrote pieces for the instrument. Shaham will perform Sarasate’s works with New York City’s acclaimed Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The New York Times calls Shaham “a virtuoso and a player of deeply intense sincerity.” Born in Champaign-Urbana where his father worked at the University of Illinois, he moved when he was two to Israel, where he began violin studies at age seven with grants from the America-Israel Foundation. He took first prize in Israel’s Claremont Competition before reaching his teens, and became a scholarship student at Juilliard shortly afterward. He’s a great organizer—the Residents’ Association, the football team, the Rotary Club—whatever he can get involved with. Regarded as a pompous bore by most of the local residents, Martin’s faithful supporters include friends Howard and Hilda, as well as his wife, Anne. How they cope with Martin’s personality makes for hilarity all around. Richard Briers headlines the cast as Martin, with Penelope Wilton as Anne.

The first of three new Nature episodes this month, Clever Monkeys,
examines the complex traits—love, language, guilt, envy, generosity, secrets, lies and sophisticated family structure—we share with our primate cousins. As the babies of two different species are reared, viewers learn how and what monkeys teach their young, and how they use that knowledge to adapt to the variety of environments they now call home. A look at the diverse range of species on several continents shows just how much of the human experience they share.
Nature Debuts New Episodes
Unique to North America, the bald eagle is the continent’s most recognizable aerial predator, with a bright white head, electric yellow beak and penetrating eyes. Photographed by Emmy-winning cinematographer Neil Rettig, American Eagle tells the story of a year in the lives of these majestic raptors on a breathtaking stretch of the Mississippi. The latest in camera technologies gives viewers unprecedented high-definition access into the nests—and into the skies—with these amazing birds. In fall 1893, a young bounty hunter from New York arrived in the wilds of New Mexico to kill the wolf leader of a marauding, cattlekilling pack. By the time Ernest Thompson Seton finally met the renegade Lobo, the wolf had become a hero in his eyes. Seton’s tale of the encounter captured the essence of the vanishing wilderness and led both to the establishment of the national park system and the Boy Scout movement in America. NOVA takes viewers on a scientific
journey to the beginnings of modern religion in this new two-hour special, including fresh examinations of the origins of ancient Israelites, the evolution of their belief in one God and the creation of the Bible. For the first time, more than a century of literary detective work and decades of archeological excavation in the Holy Land will challenge viewers with provocative new insights, including that most Israelites worshiped pagan gods and many believed that God had a wife, who was venerated as an idol. A story of science, history and faith, The Bible’s Buried Secrets could become the definitive documentary on the Bible for generations to come.

WILL-TV has been awarded a $120,000 grant from the PBS Foundation’s Adobe Youth Voices Venture Fund to continue and expand the Youth Media Workshop project. The grant will allow the Youth Media Workshop to work with 30 economically-diverse African-American students to create video shorts exploring social issues from an inter-generational perspective using the latest portable digital technology. The students’ work will be distributed on a special project page of the Youth Media Workshop Web site that youth participants will help design and maintain.
“I love the fact that with this grant, we can purchase portable video cameras for the students that they can keep so they can continue to do this work. They’ll be able to upload their videos to the Youth Media Workshop Web site and their My Spaces pages, even after our year of work together is over,” said Kimberlie Kranich, co-director of the Youth Media Workshop at WILL. WILL will train teachers from local schools and students from the College of Media in the summer of 2009 to work with 10 students at each of three public schools for the 2009-10 school year.

Inside WILL
A Personal Look at the Ripple Effect Editor’s note: David Grothe entered the University of Illinois as a James Scholar in Fall 1964. His U of I experience was life-changing, so Dave has decided to give back to the institution that made such an impact. All of us at WILL are incredibly thankful for Dave’s long-time financial support, and we’re pleased to have his valuable guidance as a member of our Community Advisory Committee. We’re also honored that Dave is inviting you to support WILL and the University through a charitable gift annuity as described in his letter below. It seemed entirely fitting since Dave, an AM 580 and FM 90.9 listener, learned of CGAs through announcements that air on WILL. Dear Friends, My experience at the U of I was quite special. The courses were excellent, and beyond that, the ability to participate in such a significant research project as the supercomputer Illiac IV was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The group of graduate students and professors who comprised that group were top-notch in every respect. It is truly rare to be able to work in such an atmosphere. Beyond computing, the U of I also offered numerous cultural opportunities. I have been a lifelong lover of
classical music and took advantage of what the School of Music had to offer while I was on campus. Naturally, I became familiar with the U of I’s FM radio station, WILL, and have continued as a listener and supporter ever since. Which brings me to the charitable gift annuity (CGA). I had two bequeathals written into my will for several years. One was for WILL and the other for a memorial fund in the name of Dan Slotnick, the principal investigator for the Illiac IV project. Recently I was reminded of the U of I Foundation’s CGA and realized it is an ideal vehicle for these gifts. Using the CGA will allow
us to lower our tax bill this year from the immediate deduction we received. Given the uncertainty of estate tax laws, there may not be any tax savings had we waited until we are gone. Also, more than 60 percent of the guaranteed lifetime income we receive is going to be tax free. This is a tremendous benefit over other income-producing options we might have chosen. Perhaps the U of I played a significant role in your life like it did in mine and you’ve considered providing support; or maybe the university is already part of your estate plans. If so, I urge you to contact the Foundation’s Office of Gift Planning to see how you might benefit from a CGA; or to let them know about your plans to provide support through your estate plan. Either way, your current support or future gift can be included in the Brilliant Futures campaign, which will help ensure its success! David Grothe ’69 MS, Computer Science
More on Digital Radio
How do I tune to WILL’s digital radio signals? You need to have a radio labeled “HD” (hybrid digital) to receive the digital signals. On the HD radio, tune to FM 90.9. After a brief delay, the radio will pull in the FM 90.9 HD1 signal. To listen to the AM news and information service, dial the radio up to HD2. An HD radio will also pick up analog signals, not just digital signals. Are analog radio broadcasts going to end soon, as analog TV will end in February 2009? Not for a very long time. The FCC is relying on marketplace competition, instead of a mandate (like TV has) to move the digital radio conversion ahead. Radio stations that convert to digital will be required to continue to offer their existing analog transmission services. 20 PATTERNS • November 2008
