A NOTE FROM THE ARIEL QUARTET
Tonight’s program explores the fascinating realm of spiritual juxtapositions. Menachem Wiesenberg has long been interested in the Jewish melting pot of cultures from different areas of the world gathered in Israel. His Between the Sacred and the Profane juxtaposes music inspired by religious life and customs (such as the Sabbath) with day-to-day social life, a dichotomy that in many ways defines the Jewish-Israeli cultural fabric today. Mohammed Fairouz’s Prophesies, enjoying its world premiere tonight, is a musical journey through the heritage and history of the Islamic and Jewish spiritual roots, exploring their unique musical characteristics. The eight movements bear the titles of the two religions’ different forefathers, highlighting the often-ignored fact that both faiths share some of their most prominent founding figures. When writing his Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, Beethoven was suffering from an illness that had the potential to claim his life. He recovered, yet the experience left a profound imprint on his spiritual outlook and gave birth to an additional (third) movement composed for Op. 132: “A Convalescent’s Holy Song of Thanksgiving to the Divinity, in the Lydian Mode.” The ongoing shift between the main chorale section of the “Thanksgiving” and the middle dance section titled “With New Strength” is the forefront of the movement’s explored dichotomy of illness and recovery, life and death. An underlying, subtler narrative can be seen in the programmatic nature of the harmonic language. Set in the Lydian mode instead of the traditional “Major,” the choral lacks a solid “home” key, implying instead two juxtaposing harmonic centers: F Major and C Major, both fighting for dominance.
