NOTES

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Welcome to the CCM Acting production of The Government Inspector. I hope you’re ready to laugh. I can be quite a sourpuss, slow to abandon myself to laugh out loud. When I first read the Jeffrey Hatcher adaptation of The Government Inspector, I laughed out loud. Repeatedly. Without control. I laughed during every rehearsal. I hope this theater is filled with laughter for every performance. The playwright Nikolai Gogol said, “Don’t blame the mirror when it’s your face that is crooked.” He also said, “You can’t imagine how stupid the whole world has grown nowadays.” The Government Inspector was written in 1834 and produced in 1836 with the consent of Emperor Nicholas I. It’s said that he later regretted his tolerance. A good satire bites when it is written. A great satire withstands the test of time and continues to bite for future generations. The Government Inspector is a classic because it was funny then, and it is funny now. Our production is set in an 1836 that feels uncannily like 2018. Welcome. Let’s laugh together. I’m so glad you’re here. — Richard E. Hess, director

THE VILLAGE NEWS ALUMNI APPLAUSE Todd Almond (BM Vocal Performance, BFA Acting, 1999) holds the leading role of Elias Burke in Girl from the North Country, a new musical by Bob Dylan and Conor McPherson that recently debuted Off-Broadway. Cincinnati audiences most recently saw Almond performing as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) this past summer. In November 2017, CCM premiered Almond’s The Earth is Flat, an affectionate play about his time at UC. Sarah Davenport (BFA Acting, 2015) has a leading role playing Jo in the new film Little Women, which premiered in theaters on September 28 to celebrate the 150 anniversary of Louisa May Alcott’s original novel. She also appeared onscreen in Bodysnatch, The Hatred and Stitchers. CCM audiences will remember Davenport from her portrayal of the title role in The Heidi Chronicles during CCM’s 2014-15 Mainstage season.

Sun Hee Kil (MFA Sound Design, 2009) is an assistant professor at SUNY New Paltz’s Department of Theatre Arts, where she teaches courses in sound design and assists students with the audio for the school’s major theatrical performances. In February, Kil was an associate sound designer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

Josh Reiter (BFA Acting, 2018) currently stars as Eugene Morris Jerome in Broadway Bound at the West Coast Jewish Theatre in Los Angeles. During his time at CCM, he had an internship with Lin-Manuel Miranda on Hamilton, and he has also worked with the Saratoga Shakespeare Company. Recently, Reiter signed with the CESD Talent Agency.
