Dear Friends: Since I arrived in the Queen City in September 2008, I’ve celebrated the richness and excellence of the CCM Village. One cannot fully appreciate CCM without acknowledging our rich heritage of accomplishment while simultaneously exclaiming our dynamic future of excellence. This new season brochure reflects the significance of growing toward tomorrow with respect and appreciation for where we have been. The size of this brochure might be the same as before, but the breadth and depth of performances and information reflects the ever-growing dynamism of CCM. You’ll find more than 70 events listed from among nearly 900 presented annually — dance, drama, jazz, musical theatre, opera, orchestra, chorus, wind ensembles and more. Programs are chosen for what they teach our students who learn and perform classics and popular favorites. CCM students create and produce new works resulting from the holistic training we provide. Add to this our well-developed and ambitious curricula taught by exceptional, dedicated faculty in our state-of-the art facilities and the result is excellence and magic. Part of our students’ immersive education is to perform before audiences. It is critically important to the students, faculty, guest artists and CCM administration to have you in our audience. We need to hear your reactions — laughter, sighs and, of course, applause. Your support and involvement in the school is important and appreciated. NCE CCM SCHOLAR Caroline Betancourt started dancing when she was three years old. She attended New World School of the Arts High School in Miami, Fla., and continued to study ballet and modern dance. At the age of seventeen Caroline participated in the VIII USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Miss., known to many as the Olympics of ballet. In June of 2010, she will be receiving her BFA in ballet from CCM. “Because of my scholarship I have been able to attend CCM and earn a BFA in ballet, which I could not have done in my home state.”

AMA CCM ALUMNI Lauren Carter is “a thrilling talent” according to CCM Drama chair Richard Hess. Her admirable work on campus included award winning work in Charley’s Aunt and The Glory of Living. In New York for two years now, Lauren has starred in the film The Prodigies and recently filmed Rising Stars after appearing in the Off-Broadway production of Night Sky. Hess adds that Carter “is an artist who possesses depth, maturity and range coupled with a wicked sense of humor. I’m not surprised by her professional success.”

CCM SCHOLAR Philip Hilger is a 4th year saxophonist from Williamsburg, Va. majoring in Jazz Studies. He is already actively performing with professional jazz and contemporary groups in the tri-state area. “The jazz program at CCM is truly one of a kind. In addition to having an exceptional faculty and wonderful facilities, it offers students the chance to hang out and learn from the best jazz players of today. I have benefited tremendously from master classes by visiting artists like Christian McBride, Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis and Bob Mintzer. CAL THEATRE CCM ALUMNI Adam Jonathon Wagner, originally from Chesterton, Ind., is a graduate (2005) of the musical theatre department at CCM. Unable to afford piano lessons, he is self-taught and began to write songs in 2001. In June 2005 he presented an original revue, Don’t Look Down, as part of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. The show received the Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Best Alternative Production and a Cincinnati Enquirer Acclaim Award.

In ancient times, the city of Rome has fallen into depravity and it seems the only honorable woman who remains is Lucretia. The king’s son seethes with jealousy, determined to test Lucretia’s chastity, and the events that ensue become a symbol of the regime’s oppression, sparking an uprising among the people. Featuring some of Britten’s most beautiful music, the opera conveys with intense passion the struggle between evil and redemption. Sung in English with supertitles. CHESTRAS CCM SCHOLAR Sarah Lynch began playing the oboe at age 11. While earning her performance degree at CCM, she has been a treasurer of Mu Phi Epsilon, box office representative for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and an active volunteer in the local arts community. She hopes to play for movie soundtracks some day and has a passion for the administrative aspect of the arts. “Without my CCM scholarship, I would not have been able to take my music abroad and share the once-in-a-lifetime experience of playing Italian Opera in the heart of Tuscany with other amazing musicians.”

CCM SCHOLAR Felipe Morales-Torres is in his second year at CCM, studying both Bassoon Performance and Music Education. “When I got the call from admissions, I wanted to blast the person on the other end with a million YES’s… but there were issues to consider. Namely, how would I pay for it all? The answer came not four days later in an envelope carrying two offers: my official admission and a CCM Scholarship. CCM SCHOLAR Kara Huber, from Oakland, Ill., began piano lessons at the age of five. The celebration will surround an extended run of the American tribal love/ rock musical Hair in November, which premiered in 1968, the year CCM musical theatre was established. Karen Olivo wins her first TONY Award for her spectacular performance as Anita in the 2009 revival of West Side Story. “I’m so unprepared for this,” Olivo said in her acceptance speech. “I want to dedicate this to everyone who has a dream. A lot of people said I couldn’t do this. I just think that if you surround yourself with people who love you, you can do anything.” Matt Kraus (CCM ’01 Theater Design & Production) was part of the design team for Liza’s at The Palace...!, the 2009 Tony winner for “Best Special Theatrical Event” and starring Broadway legend Liza Minnelli. Kraus served as sound designer for this dancefilled tribute to the late-1940s nightclub act of Minnelli’s godmother, Kay Thompson.
BALDET PLAYS TIMON IN THE LION KING
Damian Baldet (CCM ’95 Drama) grew up in Forest Park and Mt. Healthy before attending CCM. He can currently be seen as Timon in the Las Vegas production of The Lion King. Damian is know for his original work with The Civilians, most notably their Off-Broadway hit Gone Missing. “[CCM] was an incredibly, incredibly intense place. It makes you focus and get used to the idea of being under pressure and trying to deliver something that you hope is entertaining.”

THE SATORI GROUP The Satori Group was founded in Cincinnati by eleven award-winning artists from across the United States — graduating students from two colleges, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and Williams College. Since their inception The Satori Group has created three original works and presented a wide array of productions. Their original work premiered at the 2008 Cincinnati Fringe Festival and earned Cincinnati CityBeat’s Critic’s Pick.
RECENT GRADUATE SHOOTS FEATURE FILM Adrien Finkel graduated from CCM Drama one year ago with the Class of 2008 and has had a very busy year thanks to the training she received. In the year she has been in Los Angeles she has signed with an agent and a manager, joined SAG and AFTRA, and been seen on Disney and MTV. In addition, she shot a feature film called Exodus Falls, which has been submitted to the Toronto Film Festival.
A film edited by 2004 E-media graduate Greg Nicholson, Robot Love From Another World, was made for the 48 Hour Film Festival in Cincinnati. After the film won Best of Cincinnati it went on to the Miami International Film Festival. And then that led to Cannes. Greg edited the film for the Cincinnati comedy team Pizza Infinity, comprised of Kendall Burns and Josh Flowers. “I recently landed my dream job, I have a film in the Cannes Film Festival and I’m getting to do what I love everyday. I have to say, I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for such a great experience at UC and CCM. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Electronic Media Division.”
HANSON EDITS OMEA PROFESSIONAL JOURNAL Dr. Lisa Hanson graduated from CCM in 2001 with a DMA in Choral Conducting. Dr. Hanson is the Choral Director at Lakewood High School in Northeastern Ohio. Her groups have consistently received superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Adjudicated Event for the last two decades. She was president of District IV, OMEA, and is presently serving on the Board of Trustees of OMEA as the Editor of TRIAD, OMEA’s professional journal. One of her fondest memories while at CCM was a quote by Dr. Elmer Thomas: “I am never alone. I spend my time with the greatest human beings — those like Mozart, Bach and Brahms.” He was right.
CCM SCHOLAR John (J.T.) Rooney is a junior in the Electronic Media program at CCM studying Audio, Video and Web technologies. He is an officer in all four Electronic Media extra-curricular organizations, including UCast Student television, BearCast Student Internet Radio, the National Broadcasting Society and the Music Entertainment Industry Student Association. “Being able to receive scholarships from CCM in addition to my UC scholarship was the final push for me to apply for the Electronic Media program.”

The most convenient place to park for CCM performances is in the CCM Garage, managed by UC Parking Services.
