The CCM PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT is a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the Greater Cincinnati Alliance for Arts Education, The Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, and the Suzuki Association of the Americas. CCM Preparatory is a founding member of The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. The department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, Schools of Theatre, and Schools of Dance. Lessons and ensembles are housed at UC Blue Ash College, Lakota West High School, Walnut Hills High School, St. James Episcopal Church in Westwood, Baldwin Music in Hyde Park and we are in the planning stages of opening a satellite location at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park. CCM Preparatory also offers in school and after school programs as part of its community outreach initiative program in several Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky schools.
MUSIC stARTS!
For 3-4 year olds 9 and 10 a.m., Saturdays Designed by our faculty especially for our youngest students, stARTS! offers three 8-week series that introduce children to music, dance and theatre through child-friendly experiences. The sessions seek to increase children’s comfort level in the performing arts, become acquainted with the CCM village, and allow children to experience all the performing arts before entering any of our curriculum-driven programs. Each of the sessions has a different theme, so children can take all three sessions without repeating, and there is a discount for enrolling in all three. NOTE: This is the only option we offer for children younger than 4 years old. Young fours may be asked to take this class prior to entering one of the curriculum classes. Our staff will be happy to discuss this with you. Dates: Fall — Sept. 27-Nov.15, Winter — Jan. 10March 14, 2015; Spring — March 21-May 16 Cost: $125 per eight-week session (no registration fee required). If taking all three sessions, the total cost is $350.
PRIVATE LESSONS
CCM Preparatory offers private lessons in keyboard, strings, wind and percussion instruments, plus theory and composition. Students can augment individual lessons with chamber music groups, ensemble participation, theory classes and student recitals. All new private-lesson and specialized lessons students must contact Dr. Peggy Grant, music registrar, at 513-556-2637, or by e-mail at peggy. grant@uc.edu before enrollment. teacher based on your goals, proficiency, and schedule. She also will guide you through the placement and registration process, answer questions, and provide additional information regarding our programs. Please note that all the programs require a $30 registration fee except where noted.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION
Students may sign up for 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute weekly lessons. Students register and pay through the Preparatory office, but schedule lessons directly with the private teacher. Students register for the academic year September through May and may choose to study in the summer as well. Private students may enter the program at any time; tuition will be prorated to the end of May. Cost per 30-week year: Tier I $25 per 30-minute lesson, or $750 / year $37 per 45-minute lesson, or $1,110 / year $50 per 60-minute lesson, or $1,500 / year Tier 2* $33 per 30-minute lesson, or $990 / year $49 per 45-minute lesson, or $1,470 / year $66 per 60-minute lesson, or $1,980 / year *Tier 2 lessons are taught by master teachers with advanced education and extensive teaching and/or performing experience.
TRIAL LESSONS
Students may schedule a single trial lesson of any length. In addition to the cost of the lesson (see above), there is a $5 processing fee, but no registration fee.
SUZUKI
Designed to teach music to young children, the Suzuki method is based on evidence that talent derives from environment more than from heredity. Children learn through a series of achievements reinforced by motivation, listening, repetition and parental involvement. Led by teachers with special training, the Suzuki program at CCM Preparatory creates a community of learning that supports children and parents. Lessons are offered in piano, violin, viola and cello. Interested parents should visit the website ccm.uc.edu/prep/programs/ music/suzuki.html for more information and to determine whether the Suzuki Method is a good fit for their family. Students and parents of all Suzuki programs must attend both lessons and classes. Prospective students and their parents are expected to observe at least one class before registering. The SUZUKI STRING PROGRAM includes a full program of lessons, group classes and performance opportunities. Upper level students attend two weekly group classes from 5-7 p.m., Thursdays at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center, 322 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, Ohio, along with a private lesson at CCM. BALDWIN MUSIC EDUCATION CENTER
For more than 50 years, Baldwin Music Education Center, located in Hyde Park/Oakley, has been the preeminent preschool music and group piano program in the city. We are pleased to announce a community partnership in music education for students in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Baldwin Music Education Center offers: Musical Beginnings classes for students ages 6-24-months Music for Little People - keyboard-based general music classes for preschoolers ages 2-4 Group Piano Programs for ages 5 and older
The unique, age-appropriate classes, which run year around, are taught by trained group music instructors and offer family discounts, as well as a convenient, central location. MUSIC FOR LITTLE MOZARTS For ages 5-6 10 a.m., Saturdays Instructor: Lindsay Zierolf
A great introduction to piano for youngsters, this program lays a foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Students follow the adventures of Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear as they learn to sing, play, listen to and create music. Cost: $450 per year. An additional materials charge of $25 is payable at the first class.
KEYBOARD FOR KIDS I For ages 7-9 10 a.m., Saturdays Instructor: Brianna Matzke
Not sure whether private lessons are right for your child? This class includes a short weekly private keyboard lesson plus unison playing, singing and movement sessions that use games and worksheets to develop reading, rhythm, ear training skills and musicality. Cost: $450 per year
KEYBOARD FOR KIDS 2 For ages 8-10 11 a.m., Saturdays Instructor: Brianna Matzke
For students who have successfully completed the Keyboard for Kids I course, or who have received the advance approval of the instructor. Cost: $450 per year
CHAMBER MUSIC
Students of all ages are strongly encouraged to participate in chamber music ensembles coached by CCM Prep faculty. Students will be placed with other musicians of similar ability and age, and a rehearsal schedule will be established for each group based on members’ availability. THE SASSMANNSHAUS TRADITION For ages 4 and older Saturday mornings at UC Blue Ash
This string method teaches note reading and advanced techniques from the very beginning. Included in the tuition are a weekly private lesson, musicianship class, chamber music coaching, and a large string ensemble. Many students of this program have been accepted into CCM’s Starling Preparatory String Project for talented young string players with professional potential. Cost (30 weeks): Tier 1: 30-minute lessons — $1,350 45-minute lessons — $1,650 60-minute lessons — $2,000
STARLING PREPARATORY STRING PROJECT Chairperson: Kurt Sassmannshaus
This specialized honors program for young string students is generously funded through a grant by the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation. These talented musicians perform as the Starling Chamber Orchestra and are selected by audition. Students receive one hourly lesson per week and take music theory, chamber and orchestra each Saturday. Instructors include CCM faculty and graduate students specially trained and chosen by Prof. Sassmannshaus. CINCINNATI JUNIOR STRINGS For students in grades 3-9 2-5 p.m., Sundays, at UC Blue Ash Director: Rachel Bierkan
CJS is a high-achieving orchestra designed to augment area public school string programs in training young players. At the conductor’s discretion, one student will be awarded a full tuition scholarship for the year. Rehearsals begin Sept. 14 at Muntz Theatre, UC Blue Ash. CINCINNATI NEW HORIZONS ORCHESTRA
Beginners: 10:30-12:30 p.m., Saturdays, UC Blue Ash Intermediate: 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, location TBA Director: Dr. Betty Anne Gottlieb The New Horizons Orchestra provides string instruction to adults over age 50, including those with no musical experience at all and adults who were active in school music programs, but have been inactive for a long period. GUITAR FOR THE YOUNG
For individual students age 5-7, with parental involvement. Instructor: Rodney Stucky Guitar for the Young is a unique classical guitar program for young children. It requires parental involvement and begins with rote learning. It proceeds very gradually in small steps, giving the student ample opportunity for musical success and technical development at each level. Music reading is added once the child is comfortable with the guitar and has learned to play a few simple tunes. Cost: $990 for 30 half-hour private lessons.
INTRODUCTION TO GUITAR I For ages 7-12 10 a.m., Saturdays Instructor: Brandon Coleman
Students in this course will be introduced to basic strumming, hand techniques, note-reading and simple chords in a friendly, low-pressure environment. For students without their own guitars, guitars will be made available to use during class time. Dates: Fall — Sept. 27-Nov. 15, 2014, Winter — Jan. 10-March 14, 2015, Spring — March 21-May 16 Cost: $120 for one of the eight-week sessions
CINCINNATI JUNIOR YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE (JR. CYWE) For students in grades 6-8 5:30-7 p.m., Sundays Director: James Daughters

BRASS CHOIR
For students in grades 9-12 7-9 p.m., Wednesdays Director: Paul Hillner Open to outstanding high school brass performers, the choir presents two concerts annually on campus and also performs in the community. Intended for both enthusiasts and serious musicians, the Jazz Program at CCM Preparatory seeks to create competent, knowledgeable and expressive musicians through active experiences. Private instruction in jazz guitar, bass, saxophone, percussion and piano are available, as well as a variety of ensembles for students of different ages and skill levels.

CINCINNATI YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE (CYWE)
Combo programs are aimed at motivated musicians and learners who want to perform jazz music in a small group setting. Members learn to master jazz standards and contemporary tunes with a primary emphasis on improvisation and small group interaction.

ADULT VOICE CLASS
7-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Aug. 26, 2014-May 19, 2015 Instructor: Jill Dew This is a 30-week course for adults to explore efficient vocal technique. In the first 15 weeks, the class will be a group effort, with everyone working together, learning technique. The second 15 weeks will be in the manner of a master class, where all have the opportunity to sing and learn from each other. Cost: $450 per year
THE JAZZ EXPLOSION
For students in grades 7-9 Director: Jan Diehl Rehearsals: Saturdays at CCM between 9 a.m.noon; beginning Oct. 4. Ensemble for students who have a strong interest in learning both jazz improvisation and authentic jazz styles. Open to any instrumentalist, but some limitations may be made for certain sections of the group.

CCM YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
For students in grades 10-12 Directors: Bill Burns and Jennifer Grantham Rehearsals: 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays at either Lakota West or Walnut Hills High school in Cincinnati, beginning Nov. 11 The Youth Jazz Orchestra offers musical challenges for advanced high school aged students in a big band setting. Emphasis will be placed on developing professional musical, improvisational and performance skills. Please note that the number of students auditioning and instrumentation will require us to have two groups; one based in the northern suburbs and one based near UC. An understanding of theory is essential for instrumentalists. The class is an introductory theory class for students who have not taken music theory, need a refresher, or just know a little bit about music theory. Discounts do not apply. Cost: $120 for 20 weeks
COMPOSITION LESSONS
Students with an interest in composing original music can take private composition lessons and have an opportunity to perform their own works at recitals. Traditional and computer composition lessons are available. An understanding of music theory is essential. Cost: $66 per hour
SONGWRITING AND MODERN PIANO LESSONS For teens and adults Instructor: Steve Goers
Songwriting lessons combine theory, stylistic techniques, and critical analysis to help songwriters achieve the best results while developing their own musical voice. Modern piano lessons blend classical technique, jazz theory and improvisation, and rock/pop stylistic sensibilities to expand the possibilities. Cost: $75 per hour
CONDUCTING LESSONS
CCM Preparatory offers conducting lessons to aspiring high school and adult students who have an interest in conducting. Please check with the Music Registrar (see Private Lessons, above) for more information.
HONORS PROGRAM
The Honors Program is a three- or four-year program designed for high-achieving music students who are entering high school. Students must apply and audition to gain acceptance. For students who are accepted, the applied teacher recommends and oversees an appropriate course of study. Students in this program are expected to participate in a variety of experiences, including concert attendance, community service and secondary study. There is an additional $150 administrative charge per year.
MUSIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
CCM Preparatory encourages its students to participate in the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, the nationwide standard program for music students of all ages studying all instruments and voice. Students can apply for private applied study, music theory or both. The applied teacher will assist in preparation for testing and there is a class designed to prepare students for the music theory test. There are additional fees associated with this program. MUSIC THERAPY
For individual students of all ages and abilities. Mimi Sinclair, Music Therapist Active learning experiences and music-based treatment for children and adults with physical, emotional, cognitive and social problems. Adapted musical instruction for special learners is offered, as well as summer programs for individuals of all ages. Music therapy services are provided by Mimi Sinclair, MM, MT-BC, a CCM graduate and Board-Certified Music Therapist with 20 years’ experience. THEATRE ARTS Fully accredited, the Theatre Arts division of CCM Preparatory offers classes and programs in voice, acting and dance that adhere to the highest standards for theatre education. We offer entrylevel, special-interest and auditioned classes for students of all ages. The Musical Theatre Intensive, Honors Acting, Jr. Musical Theatre and the Acting Certificate Programs are for the student who desires comprehensive training.

THE YOUNG ACTORS TOOLBOX For ages 4-6 10 a.m., Saturdays
The young actor explores acting through storytelling, theatre games, fairy tales and improvisation; the class will also include basic voice and movement exercises. This is a wonderful class to build a young actor’s self esteem. Cost: $190 per semester
ALL ABOUT ACTING For ages 7-9 10 a.m., Saturdays
A beginning acting class designed to allow young students to continue to explore their imaginations through voice, movement, and the elements of drama. Cost: $380 per year

Recommended for ages 10-13 9 a.m., Saturdays Acting I students begin with improvisation that leads to group scenes and monologue work with a
focus on body awareness and vocal technique. Cost: $380 per year

ACTING 4 (SCENE STUDY)
For ages 14 and up (Acting III prerequisite) 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturdays In this advanced acting class, students develop acting skills by working in scenes from contemporary and classical theatre. The focus is on learning to be a better actor by fulfilling the actor’s responsibility to other actors, the playwright and the audience. VOICE CLASSES

The Honors High School Theatre Program is an intensive one year pre-professional/pre-collegiate program designed to create well-rounded, curious and thoughtful theatre artists. Each of the following two classes incorporates historical and sociological contexts as well as performances and projects. This program offers an optional one-week Study Abroad course in London, England, and Paris, France, during winter break (additional cost). This is an advanced course in which students will study the varied works and theatrical styles of differing cultures in the Americas and around the world. Through the reading and analyzing of scripts and other texts, students will be encouraged to recognize and analyze ethical issues and actions while examining the socio-political, economic and historical conditions from which diversity both emerges and converges. Using the multi-cultural theatrical styles and previously studied techniques students will perform scenes from works with origins in African, Asian and Native American culture. Cost: $400

A class especially designed for students fascinated by lighting, sound, scenery, props and costumes, this “traveling” class will be held at CCM, the Dunham Arts Center and other theatrical locales, and will feature skill building, hands-on activities in all the backstage areas. Cost: $400, plus $50 materials fee.
Students will embark on a 7-day journey to the exciting cities of London and Paris, where they will attend a diverse selection of lively theatrical productions, explore many sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Globe Theatre, and the Louvre, enjoy a backstage tour of the London National Theatre, and savor a multitude of culinary delights. This rewarding experience promises friendships and memories to last a lifetime.

Students serious about musical theatre are encouraged to audition for the Musical Theatre Intensive program. This program encompasses voice, dance and acting components. JUNIOR MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE PROGRAM

For 3-4 year olds 9 and 10 a.m., Saturdays Designed by our faculty especially for our youngest students, stARTS! offers three 8-week series that introduce children to music, dance and theatre through child-friendly experiences. The sessions are designed to increase children’s comfort level in the performing arts, become acquainted with the CCM village, and allow children to experience all the performing arts before entering any of our curriculum-driven programs. Each of the sessions has a different theme, so children can take all three sessions without repeating, and there is a discount for enrolling in all three. NOTE: This is the only option we offer for children younger than 4 years old. Young fours may be asked to take this class prior to entering one of the curriculum classes. Our staff will be happy to discuss this with you. Musical theater dance introduces students to the steps, techniques and styles of dance commonly used in musical theater. Classes consist of a jazz or ballet warm-up, floor stretches, isolations and

Classes focus on developing the “dancing actor” by working on characterization through movement and choreography. Students in beginning MTD do not need to audition. TAP
Tap classes at CCM Preparatory provide students with a broad range of training, from traditional vaudeville and Broadway steps and styles to rhythm tap and improvisation. All classes learn routines that represent different eras and styles of tap. Technical goals for the classes include timing, rhythmical accuracy, dynamics, accent and style. Rehearsal and performance techniques and etiquette, showmanship and expression while performing are also emphasized. Students in beginning (Level 1) tap do not need to audition. Auditions for other classes are for placement only; students should attend the tap audition on Saturday, Aug. 23. Distinctive and welcoming, the CCM Preparatory Ballet Program for all ages is proud to be housed within one of the few collegiate classical ballet programs in the United States and also the oldest college-affiliated dance program in the country. The philosophy of this program is that every student deserves careful and individualized training from qualified instructors. For an optimal educational experience, we establish a maximum and minimum number of students for each class. Insufficient enrollment may result in class cancellation. Students who have enrolled in and paid for a canceled class will receive a full refund.

Any time the University of Cincinnati closes, the Preparatory Department will not hold classes. Cancellations will be noted on local radio and television stations, on the main UC Web site, and on the CCM Preparatory website as soon as possible. When closings are confirmed, we inform students and families by voice mail, our website, and local broadcast media. If necessary, we have set aside two Saturdays for Saturday group class make-up days. If there are a series of weather-
related closings, we will implement the following schedule for lessons: – One lesson missed because of UC canceling: there will be no makeup lesson – Two lessons missed because of UC canceling: one makeup by faculty member – Three lessons missed because of UC canceling; one credit lesson for student – Four lessons missed will be the same as one and repeat
ABSENCES
Each private-lesson student is allowed one absence per 15 weeks. The calendar has extra weeks and allows flexibility on the instructor and student’s part to reschedule when necessary and agreed upon. A 24-hour notice must be given for any cancellation. Our faculty may occasionally need to reschedule a lesson. If a teacher must cancel a lesson, that lesson will be made up. We expect music students to take all 30 lessons each year.
TUITION AND PAYMENT PAYMENT OPTIONS
Tuition payments are due at least in part at registration. We accept checks, cash, or credit card (Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover). Please consult the CCM Preparatory website, ccm. uc.edu/prep, for full information about tuition payment installment options.
ONLINE PAYMENTS
You may register and pay online through the CCM Preparatory web site, ccm.uc.edu/prep. Our online registration system, ASAP, allows you to quickly and easily access or create an account, register for your classes and pay using a credit card. There is no need to complete a paper registration form if you use this method. A registration form and signed waiver must be submitted by every student each year.
REFUND POLICY
Students who withdraw from a class in the first two weeks may receive a 50% tuition refund. A full refund may be given in case of illness or injury (documented by a written statement from a physician), minus the non-refundable registration fee. All refund requests must be made in writing and approved by the director.
REGISTRATION FEE
Every student must pay an annual, non-refundable registration fee of $30. Exceptions are noted on the Tuition Page, ccm.uc.edu/prep/tuition.
LATE FEE
A $20 late fee is applied to the student’s account one month after payment is due unless arrangements have been made with Assistant Director Elizabeth Boland at 513-556-9467. Students who have outstanding bills may not be eligible to participate in recitals and performances. Discounts will be removed if a payment is not received within 60 days of its due date.
UNPAID BILLS
Per UC policy, bills more than 120 days overdue are turned over to the university collections agency. To avoid this problem, please contact Assistant Director Elizabeth Boland at 513-556-9467 to arrange alternative payment options.
DISCOUNTS
CCM Preparatory offers discounts for the following students: – UC faculty and staff, their children and UC students receive a 10% tuition discount. – Clifton area hospital employees receive a 10% tuition discount for family members. Please show your hospital ID to receive this discount. – Families with more than one member studying at CCM Preparatory receive a 10% discount on the lower tuition bill(s). – Students receive a 20% discount on private lessons on the instrument they play in our ensembles (confirm with the office) – Students enrolled in a musical theatre dance class and a ballet class receive a $150 tuition credit. – Students enrolled in a junior musical theatre program receive a 10% discount on an additional theater or dance class. Students may claim this discount in addition to another discount for which they are eligible. – Families whose tuition exceeds $750 per year are eligible for a 1% tuition discount if their bill is paid in full at the beginning of the school year. Please note this discount on your registration form. This discount does not apply to registration fees or parking passes. Except where noted, students may claim only one type of discount. Some special fees are excluded (i.e. musical production fee, and accompanist fees). SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID CCM Preparatory offers several scholarship programs. Links to information are available on the website, ccm.uc.edu/prep, and at our offices. Financial aid is available for students who cannot afford to pay full tuition. High school students approved for financial aid receive a work-study award and are required to assist in the Preparatory Department in exchange for tuition assistance.
