The University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Recognized both nationally and internationally as one of the leading conservatories of the performing arts and electronic media, CCM offers the benefit of a professional training conservatory within the setting of a comprehensive public research university.

The University The University of Cincinnati (UC) ranks among the nation’s top public research universities, educating over 42,000 students annually on an operating budget of $1.1 billion. As the founding place of co-operative education, UC also has a long tradition of putting theory into practice while standing among an elite group of universities with “very high research activity” as defined by the Carnegie Commission. The University of Cincinnati and its affiliates topped $443 million in research funding for FY10, an increase of more than $65 million over FY09. U.S. News and World Report placed the University on its “up and coming university” and Best National Universities list. The Chronicle of Higher Education called UC a “research heavyweight.” Forbes magazine named UC one of the world’s most beautiful campuses, and the Princeton Review acknowledged UC as the only public institution in Ohio with “green university” standing. The oldest university west of the Alleghenies, UC is approaching its 200th anniversary in 2019. UC2019 The University of Cincinnati welcomed its 27th president, Gregory H. Williams, in 2009. At his investiture the following year, he set a course for the future by announcing a new strategic plan for the University. To build on its history and successes, the University has begun to plan for its future with a campaign “Accelerating Our Transformation,” dedicated to helping UC take its place among the elite institutions of the nation and to become a global university. The University will continue to enhance the ways in which it transforms lives, education, and knowledge as it establishes itself as a first-choice destination for students, faculty, and staff. UC2019 is based on two major outcomes:

· Measuring success against the elite set of peers represented by the Association of American Universities and The Top American Research Universities, and

· Prioritizing and targeting institutional resources by investing resources in those areas in which the University excels.

The Dean of CCM will play a critical role in the University’s plan to enhance its national standing and strengthen its contributions to the surrounding region and to society at large. More information on the University of Cincinnati may be found at the University web site: http://www.uc.edu. Among the most immediate of changes to CCM will be the adoption of the semester calendar in autumn 2012, shifting away from the current quarter system. The College-Conservatory of Music One of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country, with educational roots dating back to 1867, CCM has long been a center of visionary instruction and inspired performance. In the most recent rankings by U.S. News and World Report, CCM was honored as the sixth top university program in the country for pursuing a graduate degree in music. Within the specialty areas of Voice and Conducting, CCM’s programs placed third and fifth, respectively. Other nationally ranked programs include Music Composition and Drama. The Musical Theatre program is widely considered one of the best in the country, and the mainstage and studio series of operas have won top honors in major competitions. In Autumn 2009, CCM became an all-Steinway institution. CCM’s faculty and staff and its state-of-the-art facilities make possible the professional training and exceptional education on which CCM believes the future of the arts relies. The school’s roster of eminent faculty regularly receives distinguished honors for creative and scholarly work, and its alumni have achieved notable success in the performing, scholarly, and media arts. The school currently consists of eight separate divisions:

· Composition, Musicology, and Music Theory · Dance · Electronic Media · Ensembles and Conducting – Choral, Jazz, Orchestral, and Winds · Keyboard Studies – Collaborative Piano, Harpsichord, Organ, and Piano · Music Education · Opera, Musical Theatre, Drama, Arts Administration, Theatre Design, and Production · Performance Studies – Brass, Percussion, Strings, Voice, and Woodwinds

CCM’s annual enrollment is approaching the 1,500 mark with approximately 780 undergraduate students and 710 graduate students. Nine degrees are offered (BA, BM, BFA, MFA, MM, MA, AD, DMA, PhD) with around 100 possible majors as well as an undergraduate Performers Certificate program. The Arts Administration program, in conjunction with the College of Business, is one of only four programs in the country to offer an MA/MBA. CCM’s E-Media program has grown rapidly in recent years, drawing students interested in the continuously evolving ways that contemporary artists and reporters present content, deliver a message, and express themselves. The physical plant of CCM is exceptional. At the turn of the millennium, the school completed a $93 million, seven-year project in which existing buildings within the complex were fully renovated and new facilities constructed. The quality of design was such that CCM was one of only 14 recipients, from among 421 submissions, of National Honor Award for Outstanding Architecture by the American Institute of Architects. Among the performance spaces are the 750-seat Corbett Auditorium, the 400-seat Patricia Corbett Theater, the versatile Cohen Family Studio Theater, the 280-seat Robert J. Werner Recital Hall, and the 140-seat Watson Recital Hall. “Smart” classrooms allow electronic access to the latest information in real time and offer opportunities for cuttingedge audiovisual presentations. Production facilities include an 8,500 square-foot scene shop; 3,000 square-foot costume shop; wig, make-up and prosthetics studios; design/ drafting studio; sound design studio; lighting laboratory; 1,350 square-foot Walter and Marilyn Bartlett Television Production Center; and 1,400 square-foot J. Ralph Corbett Audio Production Center with audio recording studio.

In early 2010, the Albino Gorno Memorial Music Library moved into new and fully renovated space in the Blegen Library. The Gorno Library supports the full range of programs offered by CCM with a specialized collection of 120,000 volumes that includes books, scores, journals, microforms, and recordings. CCM students and faculty also have access to the 3.6M volumes in the UC library system as well as a large digital collection of close to 800 databases, 80,000 e-journals, and more than 1M e-books. In addition, the UC Libraries are founding members of OhioLINK, a consortium of 90 institutions that provides access to 48M items plus 140 databases, 9,000 e-journals, and significant digital collections. CCM extends beyond the main campus locally and globally. It is the largest single source of performing arts presentations in the state of Ohio. The annual calendar boasts nearly 1,000 events, ranging from solo recitals to fully staged opera, musical theater, dance, and drama productions. CCM Prep, a $2 million annual program, offers pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 classes and preparation for college study and a future in the arts. Several Prep students have been featured on NPR’s “From the Top” and have appeared in Broadway touring productions and competitions. The CCM Summer Program in Italy, based in Lucca from 1996 until 2008, was re-launched in June 2010 as the CCM Spoleto program, offering a five-week summer venue for singers, instrumentalists, and theatre technicians drawn from around the world to Spoleto, Italy.

Reporting to and working with the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and in coordination with the Deans from other colleges, the CCM Dean has responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support CCM’s vision and its role within the University of Cincinnati. In autumn 2008, the University embarked on a major fundraising campaign with the expectation that the goal for CCM is at least $45 million (with current efforts now achieving around half of that figure). The Dean will play a critical role in this ongoing endeavor, which ends June 30, 2013. The campaign is intended to take the University, and its colleges, to a new level of excellence by strengthening and expanding resources, scholarship funds, faculty development, and programs in transformational ways.

The City of Cincinnati Nestled among the hills of the Ohio River Valley, Cincinnati was the first American boomtown in the heart of the country to rival the larger coastal cities in size and wealth. Also known as the “Queen City of the West,” it blends small town charm with big city amenities, producing one of the most comfortable places in the country to live. Cincinnati has a diverse range of neighborhoods from the more urban and cosmopolitan areas of Mt. Adams or Downtown to historic suburbs such as Hyde Park or Clifton to newer or more rural areas such as Northern Kentucky or Eastgate. All of these places are located within minutes of the main campus, making commuting easy. The greater metropolitan area is home to over two million people. The downtown area offers a variety of restaurants and museums, including the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The city’s river, parks, and activities are a short walk from the downtown landmark, Fountain Square, including Great American Ball Park (home of baseball’s oldest franchise, the Reds), Paul Brown Stadium (home of the Bengals), and U.S. Bank Arena (home of the city’s minor-league hockey team, the Cyclones). The city also is host of an international men’s and women’s tennis tournament, the Western & Southern Open. The Cincinnati Zoo, one of the country’s most respected, is located one block from the medical campus. Noted for the white Bengal tigers and the reproduction of endangered species, the zoo provides activities for all seasons. Newport, the city’s neighbor across the river, is linked to Cincinnati by the pedestrian Purple People Bridge. The “Newport on the Levee” complex provides an extensive collection of entertainment venues and restaurants as well as the Newport Aquarium. Cincinnati has a vibrant commercial base and is home to many major corporations such as Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, Macy’s, Inc., American Financial Group, Convergys, Chiquita Brands International, Great American Insurance Company, Fifth Third Bank, Western & Southern Financial Group, The E. W. Scripps Company, Cincom Systems, Cincinnati Bell, Kendle International, DunnhumbyUSA, and Kao Corporation. Toyota also has many operations in the Cincinnati area with U.S. headquarters of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America in the suburb of Erlanger, Kentucky. Altogether, the region ranks in the nation’s Top 10 markets for number of Fortune 500 headquarters per million residents.

Cincinnati has pride in its rich heritage. The city’s geographical position on the border of the southern and midwestern states defined much of its history, as did the arrival of large numbers of German and Italian immigrants in its early days. As a result, the city has one of the larger collections of nineteenth-century Italianate architecture in the country and, in Over-the-Rhine, one of the largest districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city was also eventually a destination of choice among African-Americans migrating north. The current demography of the city is 49.3% Non-Hispanic White, 46.5% African-American, 2.0% Asian and 1.7% Hispanic. Arts and Culture in Cincinnati

The City of Cincinnati is home to a vibrant arts community, an environment in which collaborations and innovations flourish. Cincinnati’s rich history is steeped in the arts with an orchestra, opera company, ballet company, art museums, theaters, and more. Founded in 1895, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the fifth oldest orchestra in the U.S. and represents an evolution of 200 years of musical tradition in the Queen City. The Cincinnati Opera is the second oldest opera company in the United States, having its first performance in 1920. The world of art can also be enjoyed at the Cincinnati Art Museum, located in Eden Park, and at the Taft Museum of Art and the Contemporary Arts Center, both of which are located in the downtown area. The Contemporary Arts Center, founded in 1939 as the Modern Art Society and one of the first institutions in the U.S. dedicated to exhibiting the art of our time, opened its groundbreaking new building in May 2003. These are only a few of the more than twenty cultural organizations that are a part of the rich environment that makes Cincinnati a world-class city. These organizations provide many opportunities for the University of Cincinnati and CCM to build innovative partnerships and interdisciplinary collaborations to benefit university students and faculty as well as the local and regional community.
