MARY LU AND DICK AFT Cincinnati became home to Dick and Mary Lu Aft in 1987 when Dick began his 14-year presidency of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. That was also the year that Mary Lu began 28 years of Friends of the Public Library Leadership. As Dick continues to teach, consult and write books about United Way history, Mary Lu still spends three days each week volunteering as a Library Friend. She is also Vice Chair of the Fifty Year Club alumni association of their shared alma mater, Knox College. Dick serves as a member of the CCMpower Executive Committee and Chair of the Community Advisory Board of UC’s Hoxworth’s Blood Center. Mary Lu and Dick consider CCM “their conservatory” and believe it to be one of the best in the world. They should know, as they have enjoyed performances all over the world while working as a volunteer team committed to increasing non-profit services to people in need.

ABOUT
ABOUT MACK SENNETT Known as “The King of Comedy,” Mack Sennett was born Michael Sinnott on January 17, 1880, in Danville, Quebec, to Irish immigrant farmers. When he was 17, the family moved to Connecticut, and he became a laborer at American Iron Works. He met actress Marie Dressler in 1902 and through her went to New York City to attempt a career on the stage. He managed some burlesque and chorus-boy parts. In 1908 he began acting in Biograph films where he was directed by D.W. Griffith and performed with Mary Pickford and Mabel Normand. By 1910 he was directing. In 1912 he and two bookies-turned-producers, Adam Kessel and Charles Bauman, formed the Keystone Film Company. Sennett brought Normand with him and soon added “Fatty” Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin to the roster of notable comedians. He told Chaplin, “We have no scenario — we get an idea, then follow the natural sequence of events until it leads up to a chase, which is the essence of our comedy.” At Keystone he invented the slapstick chases of the Keystone Kops, the physical allure of the Bathing Beauties and the young-at-heart Kid Komedies. Comedy moved from improvisational slapstick to scripted situations. Stars like Bobby Vernon and Gloria Swanson joined him. When Sennett returned to Paramount in 1932, he produced shorts featuring W.C. Fields and musical ones with Bing Crosby. After directing his only Buster Keaton film, The Timid Young Man (1935), he returned to Canada a pauper. In 1937 he was awarded a special Oscar — “to the master of fun, discoverer of stars...for his lasting contribution to the comedy technique of the screen.” Sennett died at age 80 on November 5, 1960, and was interred at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. For his contributions to the motion picture industry, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. – IMDb Biography by Ed Stephan

ABOUT
ABOUT MABEL NORMAND In an era when women were deemed “not funny enough,” Mabel Normand was one of the comedy greats of Hollywood. In her films, moviegoers first saw the Keystone Cops, Charlie Chaplin’s tramp and the pie-in-the-face gag. She co-starred with both Chaplin and “Fatty” Arbuckle in a series of shorts. She was a star in the first Keystone Comedy as well as the first feature film comedy. She was the only comedian to work with Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, Mack Sennett, D.W. Griffith, Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Hal Roach, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Fred Mace, Fred Sterling and John Bunny. Born in Staten Island, New York, she started out as an artist model for Charles Dana Gibson (creator of the Gibson girl). Friends suggested she try out for the new medium of film, and she did, working with Mack Sennett on comedic shorts that would eventually turn into Keystone Comedies. Normand and Sennett were lovers, close friends and co-workers. All of Sennett’s early ideas seemed to revolve around Normand. His creation of Keystone was contingent on Normand joining him; though he would underpay her as he underpaid everyone he worked with, he insisted she have credit and a say in the company. When Normand left Keystone for Goldwyn, Sennett left soon after. The relationship between Sennett and Normand was tumultuous, filled with fights and reconciliations. Sennett was the love of her life, and she, his. Normand had been diagnosed with tuberculosis when she was 10 and her health was precarious. She drank heavily and was rumored to be addicted to drugs. In 1922 the murder of her friend William Desmond Taylor became a media circus. Although Normand was cleared of involvement (she was likely the last person to see him alive), the association tarnished her reputation and made her a subject of the tabloid press. As Normand’s health deteriorated, she was committed to a sanitarium. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 38. – IMDb Biography by Jo Noite

THE VILLAGE NEWS ALUMNI APPLAUSE Immediately following her graduation from CCM, Christy Altomare (BFA Musical Theatre, 2008) landed a role in the national touring cast of Spring Awakening, and she hasn’t stopped since. She made her Broadway debut in 2012 as Sophie Sheridan in the Winter Garden Theater’s production of Mamma Mia!, and she was recently cast as Anya (better known as Anastasia) in the new Broadway musical Anastasia. She performed excerpts from this show at CCM’s Moveable Feast previously this year. Betsy Wolfe (BFA Musical Theatre, 2004) has been seen in many productions on Broadway and Off-Broadway since her graduation, including her current role as Cordelia in the Broadway revival of Falsettos, as well as performing as a soloist in over 35 orchestral concerts. She also appeared in Die Fledermaus with the Metropolitan Opera and in the film version of The Last Five Years. Recently, Wolf was named the recipient of the CCM Musical Theatre Young Alumni Award for 2017. Raven Thomas (BFA Musical Theatre, 2016) is fresh out of CCM’s doors, but she’s already gotten a job as an ensemble member in the touring company of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning show Hamilton: An American Musical. She will also serve as understudy to the three Schuyler sisters when the tour kicks off in March.
The musical works of Brian Katona (MM Choral Conducting, 2002) have been heard in a vast range of places, including his score for the Emmywinning documentary The Town That Disappeared Overnight and his new musical Empress, created in collaboration with Tony-nominated lyricist and librettist Barry Harman. Katona is on the music faculty at Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts and recently made his Lincoln Center debut with his new holiday tune, “Don’t Say Merry Christmas.”

COLLEGE-CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
LINKS gathers instruments and then places them with needy children in local elementary, middle and high school bands and orchestras, as well as with students in CCM Preparatory. The instrument can be new, used and even in adequate condition. Buddy Roger’s Music generously donates the time to carefully restore, tune and clean each instrument.

GENERAL INFORMATION CCM BOX OFFICE: Located in the CCM Atrium, the Box Office is open Monday through Friday, noon-5:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon-4 p.m.; and one hour prior to curtain for Mainstage performances. MasterCard, Visa and Discover cards are accepted. CCM Box Office, P.O. Box 210003, Cincinnati, OH 45221-0003; 513-556-4183. PARKING: Convenient parking is available in the CCM Garage at the base of Corry Boulevard off of Jefferson Avenue. Additional parking is available in garages throughout the UC campus. Any questions concerning on-campus parking should be directed to UC Parking Services at 513-556-2283. TAX CREDIT: If you find that you cannot attend your performance, your tickets may be donated for tax credit as a charitable contribution. Simply notify the Box Office prior to the performance to release your seats, and give your name and address. A tax donation receipt will be mailed to you. EMERGENCY CALLS: If you are likely to receive an emergency call during a performance, please leave your name and seat location with the House Manager. If you have a beeper, we also request that you leave it with the House Manager along with your seat number so as not to disturb the audience and performers. In case of emergencies, this will help us locate you as quickly as possible. LOST AND FOUND: 513-556-9413 HOUSE POLICIES: The House Manager has been instructed to minimize the disturbance to patrons already seated when accommodating latecomers. The director and producer of each production select times that are least likely to interrupt the performance, and latecomers will be seated only during these times. Latecomers who miss these opportunities will not be admitted until intermission. Children under the age of six will not be admitted. CAMERAS, PHONES AND RECORDING DEVICES: The use of cameras, with or without flashes, recording devices, cellular phones and other electronic devices inside the theater is strictly prohibited. Please leave them with the House Manager. SMOKING AND REFRESHMENTS: Smoking and refreshments are not permitted in the theater. Effective January 1, 2006, smoking is prohibited inside all buildings, athletics facilities and vehicles owned,

operated or leased by the University of Cincinnati. Smoking is also prohibited within 25 feet of all university building entrances, exits, air intakes and operable windows. Smoking shall not be permitted on any bridge, overpass or enclosed walkway. HEARING ENHANCEMENT: Telex listening devices are available for checkout during performances in both Patricia Corbett Theater and Corbett Auditorium. Please inquire at the Box Office. WHEELCHAIR SEATING: Wheelchair seating is available in both theaters. Seating is limited, so reservations should be made with the Box Office when ordering tickets. These seats are subject to availability. GROUP SALES: The Box Office can accommodate groups for major productions and concerts.
