DIRECTOR’S NOTE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What a perfect time to sit and revel in the humanity, wit and heart of playwright Wendy Wasserstein. As a recipient of the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Ms. Wasserstein was a unique force in American theatre. She articulated the voice of a generation through the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s, and she did so from a woman’s perspective. The characters she created, with a spotlight on the baby boomer generation, struggled with the shifting demands and definitions of self, unique to a time and place. This play, which premiered in New York in 1988, chronicles an exciting time in American history when women demanded the equal rights they deserved and were long denied. Wendy struggled with the dual feelings of superiority and inferiority her entire life. This theme weaves cleanly through her work, an admission of the complexities of life. With a sense of humor and heartbreaking clarity she shares the naked thoughts we’d rather not express. The Heidi Chronicles takes us on one woman’s journey from 1965 to 1989. What would Wendy think of life in America in 2015, where we still must deeply question this country’s commitment to racial and gender equality? It is often hard to be a woman in the world we have created. Some of the student actors in this production were born in 1996. This play is a period piece now, but for many in the audience, this is the story of your lives. Welcome to The Heidi Chronicles. We are so glad you chose to spend your time with us. Richard Hess, Director

Professor Emerita, created an endowed trumpet scholarship As first generation Italian-Americans with limited education and means, my parents were extremely supportive of my desire to pursue a career in music and were determined to give me every opportunity to succeed. It is with that spirit, dedication and selfless devotion that I have chosen to name an endowed scholarship in trumpet in loving memory of my parents, Mary and Salvatore Speziale.

BM ’64 Trumpet Cincinnati, Ohio

MARIE SPEZIALE Acknowledged as the first woman trumpeter in a major symphony orchestra, Marie Speziale retired from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in November of 1996 after having served as its Associate Principal Trumpet for thirty-two years. Since retiring from the orchestra, she has remained active as a performer, teacher and clinician. Ms. Speziale has directed a percentage of her retirement portfolio from her estate to create the scholarship.

Your gift could provide the missing LINK… Through CCM’s Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids or LINKS, you can donate your used instruments to promising young musicians who cannot afford to rent or purchase their own. LINKS gathers instruments and then places them with needy children in local elementary, middle and high school bands and orchestras, as well as with students in the CCM Preparatory Department. The instrument can be new, used and even in adequate condition. Buddy Roger’s Music generously donates the time to carefully restore, tune and clean each instrument.
