ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The 5th Biennial FootPrint International 2014 results from a competition for fine-art prints that are exactly one foot square. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of 20th century abstraction. Rectangular horizontal and vertical shapes for landscape and portraiture, respectively, were, and in fact still are, the norm. For one thing, composing in the square is an artistic challenge. FootPrint International 2016 presents an opportunity for contemporary printmakers to address the square in 12 inches by 12 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm). FootPrint International is held every other year, alternating with CCP’s Biennial International Miniature Print Competition.

PRINTED WORLDS When I look at prints I often remember a conversation I had a long time ago with Eugene Carroll, an art historian of the Italian Renaissance and print connoisseur, who observed, “Great prints always seem larger in our imaginations than their actual size.” You can test this by trying to describe the size of a famous print such as Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia I by defining two sides with your hands. I guarantee you will come out with something larger than the 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches of the original. In any other medium, a work of this size would be considered in the category of miniatures, but no one has ever described Melencolia I as small. It contains a world – a place so absorbing that after five centuries it continues to draw us in. That is what I look for in a print. At one foot square, the works in FootPrint are considerably larger than Dürer’s masterpiece, but the size is still modest compared with much contemporary art. Within this format, each piece I selected opens up a vista to a world of the artist’s imagination created in terms particular to the language of prints. Using aspects of Dürer’s print as a touchtone, we can see how the artists in this exhibition create intense personal statements. Recalling the vast ocean view with the comet and rainbow in Melencolia I, the landscapes of Frances Ashforth, William Waitzman or Shirley Bernstein open up deep spaces for contemplation. Like Dürer, DeAnn Prosia harnesses an infinite number of marks to reveal an extreme, almost hallucinatory focus in her view of city life. Many artists explore open-ended figural narratives. Just as the ultimate meaning of Melencolia I has eluded viewers for generations, we will never fully unwrap what is happening in the scenes presented by Jordan Shea Crumbley, Louise Gros or Tom Bennett. The power of a single figure or face to evoke a broad range of human emotion is evidenced in prints by Anne Desmet, Nicci Haynes, Christina Keller (her print actually entitled Melancolia), Kristina Norvilaité and Cleo Wilkinson. Others, such as Ahlam Al Arif, Alberto Balletti, Myles Calvert and Sirje Eelma explore the ability of individual objects to convey symbolic meaning, bringing to mind the mysterious elements in the foreground of Dürer’s engraving. While most of the prints selected for the exhibition are representational, some artists exploit pure mark-making to articulate an involving visual world. This is certainly the case with Joanna Anos and indeed with Dürer. Part of the persistent allure of Melencolia I and the prints in this exhibition is that they can be looked at on so many levels - composition, content and facture. I invite, viewers to delve deeply in the worlds created by these artists’ FootPrints. —ANDREW RAFTERY, Professor, Rhode Island School of Design
