Early Childhood Summer Camp (Pre-Kindergarten) Theater Camp 2016: “Once Upon a Dream”

Join us for a week of singing, dancing and staging some of Disney’s most memorable songs and moments. Students will learn large production numbers and have the chance to be featured in a special way, as well. The week will culminate with a performance for our adoring fans (a.k.a. parents). This opportunity is open to all D181 students in Grades 4-8 (2015-16 school year). All campers will receive a show T-shirt. Indicate size on registration form.

Please join us for ECE Summer Camp, offered for children currently enrolled in the ECE program. Children from the ECE program will participate in structured games, sports, and activities. Through these activities, the children will be working on gross motor development, following directions, taking turns, and working in teams. There are 20 slots available for this camp Class Number: M3 Location: Held indoors & outdoors (weather permitting). Date / Time: June 13 - July 1, Please send your child in Monday through Friday sunscreen, appropriate clothing Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 for the weather, gym shoes, and with a water bottle and snack. Cost: $400 (This is a 2 1/2 hour class)

District 181 Band & Orchestra Classes June 6 - July 1

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience private lessons with your band or orchestra instrument this summer! Classes are taught by professional musicians carefully screened by our District 181 instrumental music staff, specializing in each of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass. Class Number: M1 Instructor: Professional musicians screened by D181 staff Date/Time: Lessons begin June 6 and are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students will receive four lessons, one per week, each 30 minutes. The student’s schedule will be determined by the private instructor and parent. Instructors will contact parents in regard to date and time preferences after registration is complete. Grade: 4-8 (Current D181 Students Only) Location: Clarendon Hills Middle School Cost: $100 Refund & Make-Up Policy: A refund can only be given if the teacher is unable to accommodate a specific time request for an entire series of lessons. With advance notice, teachers will make up one lesson. If a student needs to miss more than one lesson, please make arrangements with the instructor. Registration & Payment: All District 181 students and interested age appropriate students outside the D181 community are invited to enroll in the 2016 Summer Learning Program. Registration is now open to all D181 residents and opens for out of district residents on May 9, 2016. The form and payment are due no later than May 20, 2016. Students are not considered registered for the Summer Learning Program until class payment is received in full. Closings/Cancelations: Classes close once a maximum enrollment is reached. Classes will be canceled if a minimum enrollment is not reached. Registrants will be notified of cancelations and will have the opportunity to register for another class at no additional charge. Unless a class has been closed or canceled, no refunds will be given. There will not be make-up days for any reason (i.e. weather). This class will focus on fiber art forms. Students will explore weaving using yarn and fabric, apply various types of stitching to create a soft sculpture, and create a needle felted project using wool. Parents and students are invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class!

Students will go through the writing process to write a creative story. Once the stories are complete, students will use stop motion animation to bring their stories to life on the screen.

Foreign Language Enrichment This course is for students who speak Spanish regularly, and/or excelled in their 6th or 7th grade Spanish course during the school year. The focus of the course will be on developing conversation skills in Spanish as well as fluency in speaking. There will also be a class component that examines Spanish cultures around the world. Students should have a passion for Spanish to take this course. (6th graders must have prior Spanish speaking experience other than fifth grade Spanish). This class previews vocabulary, grammar concepts, and speaking/listening skills for students who will be starting Spanish in 5th or 6th grade. This is not a course for students who already know Spanish, but rather a preview for students who will start Spanish in the fall. This class is designed for students who will be entering 7th grade or 7th grade Spanish for the first time in the fall, for students who missed some or part of 6th grade Spanish and students who would like to review the 6th grade Spanish curriculum before 7th grade. This is a two-hour class and will cost $350. Students will be immersed in Italian culture through art appreciation and history while learning introductory Italian.

Students will be encouraged to create innovative creations that can move, light up, and make sound! Students will be introduced to, or continue learning, how to use block coding programs to create commands and solve problems. Students will guide their own learning to ultimately create a game in Play Lab.

Enhance your stories through digital storytelling! Students will use images and text to create a storyboard and then use it to create a digital story on an iPad. The students will create a variety of digital stories using Book Creator and Shadow Puppet Edu that will allow them to narrate and record their stories.

1,2,3 Let’s Grow

The children will enjoy watching chicks hatch, cool science experiments, and playing problem solving games. Our student-centered learning climate will include differentiated mathematics, science, writing, and reading. Physical education will also be incorporated into this two-hour session offering high energy activities and lessons in cooperative learning. This is a two-hour class and will cost $350.

1,2,3, Let’s Read, Write, and Learn

Using a workshop model, students who have completed Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade will begin each day with hands-on math instruction, aligned with District 181’s “Math in Focus” concepts and skills. Learning will focus on reviewing completed grade level concepts and previewing upcoming concepts and skills. Math time will be followed by both a reading workshop and writing workshop time. Students will participate in daily mini-lessons, followed by individual reading and writing time, with individual coaching, strategy lessons, and peer sharing. Writing workshop additionally will encompass minilessons that teach your child to think, plan, write, and add to a piece. No more need for organizers! Your child will learn strategies that will enable him/her to organize and grow a piece with independence. Writing workshop will encompass the study of personal narrative and nonfiction writing. The children will take one piece to publication. Come with us on a journey that will “GROW YOUR MIND!” This is a two-hour class and will cost $350.

6th Grade Boot Camp

This class welcomes incoming 6th graders to middle school and offers tips and tricks to become acclimated with a new school. We focus on executive functioning strategies and SELAS lessons to make their next three years successful.

Active Learners

Everyone get active with engaging and fun physical activities! Physical activity is a tool that helps ready the learner for all core courses. Students will participate in a variety of high energy, cooperative activities that will foster skill development and fitness.

This course is for current 5th graders recommended for 6th Grade Enriched Language Arts this fall. This is not a course to advance students for the fall of 2016. This is a twohour class and will cost $350.

This class is for students at all experience levels. Students who have little or no experience playing guitar will learn to strum, pick, and play melodies. Basic guitar skills and note reading will be taught. Older students who have no guitar experience or who have a little guitar experience and want to develop their skills can cover more material at a faster pace. District-owned instruments can be provided and kept at the school. Students who have their own instrument are invited to use them.

Reading Workshop

Students will ignite the spark of their imaginations through lively and creative writing experiences. This class will introduce the ‘must-know’ forms of real-life writing, including lists, signs and labels, how-to procedures, messages, ads, cards, e-mails, letters, and thank-you notes. Engaging practice activities for each writing form will be spotlighted.

Read, write, and discuss a variety of poems, stories, and essays. Connect writing with art to deepen your understanding of both. Do you like to write? Do you like to use your creativity? Why not combine both? Come join fellow middle school students and work on a variety of creative writing prompts and styles. The class will create and “publish” a literary magazine on a secure website.

Have a summer adventure! Get lost in the pages of stories and build your reading, writing, and vocabulary skills.

Create meaningful responses to literature with engaging, hands-on art and writing projects. Children will enjoy creating colorful art activities and using the writing process to form reading responses to well-loved picture books.

Have a “role” in practicing your fluency. Students will have the opportunity to rehearse together and create props to put on a play. Reader’s Theatre will encourage expression and fluency attributes such as pause, intonation, and inflection.

Students practice before, during, and after-reading techniques in order to sharpen the skills needed to read confidently and analytically.
