Using a workshop model, students who’ve completed first and second grades will begin each day with hands-on math instruction, aligned with District 181’s Singapore math, “Math in Focus” concepts and skills learned in grades 1 and 2. Learning will focus on reviewing completed grade level concepts and previewing each child’s upcoming grade’s math concepts and skills. Math time will be followed by both a reading workshop and a writing workshop. In both reading workshop and writing workshop, students will participate in daily mini lessons, followed by individual reading and writing time, with individual coaching, strategy lessons, and peer sharing. Writing workshop additionally will encompass mini lessons that teach your child to think, plan, write, and add to a piece. No more need for organizers! Your child will learn strategies that will enable him/ her to organize and grow a piece with independence. Writing workshop will encompass the study of personal narrative as well as nonfiction writing and will include taking at least one piece of writing to publication. Come with us on a journey that will “GROW YOUR MIND!”

4,5 We Will Thrive

Our class will include differentiated mathematics, writing, and reading. We will delve into math games that help students become math thinkers. Plays and novel study will be integrated into our ELA class. Activity breaks will be incorporated within the session. We are thrilled to introduce PALS (Peaceful, Aware, Leaders, Students) by mentoring the “1,2,3 Let’s Grow” class to build positive relationships and leadership skills. This is a two-hour class running from 8am-10am and 10am-12pm.

This class welcomes incoming 6th graders to middle school and offers tips and tricks to become acclimated with a new school. We focus on executive functioning strategies and SELAS lessons to make their next three years successful.

Using RUSH curriculum, students will participate in various activities related to executive functioning, including: self assessment of skills, organization of materials and time, understanding directions, goal setting, goal monitoring, and understanding the brain.

Will Jack get down a zip-line to escape the giant? Can the princess really feel the pea? Will the bridge support the billygoats? Explore and experiment with fairy tales. Students will read, participate in hands-on STEM activities, perform, and create projects to bring fairy tales to life.

Have you ever wondered how you make paper from a tree, how many stars are in the universe, or why donuts have holes? We will explore the answers to many everyday questions like these. You will also have the opportunity to find the answers to your own “wonders” using the website, “Wonderopolis,” and other online sources.

Use sketches, lines, and words to make the most of your learning. Learn strategies to deepen your learning using both digital and paper/pencil techniques.

Students will explore mythology from around the world. We will compare and contrast various myths and determine their influence on our culture and language today.

Speak up! Be more confident when you are speaking and improve your writing, too! Also, students will collaborate with a team to research and debate different topics.

Students will be introduced to the plays of William Shakespeare. We will read, interpret, and perform plays including a comedy, a tragedy and a history.

This course curriculum will address motivation, effort, overcoming obstacles in positive ways, and providing a rationale for trying your best.

Foreign Language Students will be immersed in Italian culture through art appreciation and history while learning introductory Italian.

Students will be immersed in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries through art appreciation and history while learning introductory Spanish.

In this class, students will consider how individual perspectives are shaped by knowledge and memory. Through the study of dystopian literature and related texts, students will explore common themes, characters, and contrasting points of view. Students will compare various texts to evaluate whether perfection is worth a sacrifice. Students will have reading assignments outside of class.

4 5

This class will teach students about survival in the face of grave danger and overwhelming odds. Students will evaluate survival stories to learn about the importance of positive thinking, slowing down to think clearly, problem solving, and constant vigilance when facing any situation, especially a life threatening one. They will also study characters in literature to learn about the struggle of man versus nature and the life lessons we can learn from others’ survival situations. Students will have reading assignments outside of class.

Builders! Astronauts! Superheroes and so much more! This class will incorporate a daily theme using picture books, crafts and games to get boys excited about reading.

Students will dive deeper into a text by learning and applying close reading strategies. Students will focus on integrating Common Core reading standards with complex informational and literature texts. Students’ comprehension, word decoding, and fluency will improve through this engaging reading class!

The ELA Prep course is designed for 5th grade students entering a 6th grade Enriched Language Arts course. Students will begin to explore and develop necessary critical thinking and analytical skills that parallel those exercised through the ELA curriculum.

Students will listen to wonderful literature read aloud each day in order to inspire their own writing. We will read and write in the genres of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. At the end of the four-week session, students will have several completed writing pieces.

Fundations makes learning to read fun in a multisensory way! Students will strengthen their phonemic awareness skills, work on handwriting formation and practice high frequency words, with all of these skills working together to become more fluent readers. Chefs, artists, scientists and so much more! This class will incorporate a daily theme using picture books, crafts and games to create excitement about reading.

This integrative teaching approach will engage students in creative art projects based on children’s literature. Student will conclude the session by creating their own version of a children’s book. Parents will be invited to an open house on the last day to view the projects. In this unified teaching approach, students will explore children’s literature while gaining an understanding of math concepts that evolve from the literature. Students will become aware of the everyday situations in which math presents itself.

Have a “role” in practicing your fluency. Students will have the opportunity to rehearse together and create props to put on a play. Reader’s Theatre will encourage expression and fluency attributes such as pause, intonation, and inflection. This course supports the development of fundamental comprehension and critical thinking strategies. Students practice before-, during-, and after-reading techniques in order to sharpen the skills needed to read confidently and analytically. Techniques emphasized include annotating, framing intelligent questions, and writing to think.

Students will have the opportunity to read their middle school suggested summer reading novels. Students will create a reading schedule, learn and use annotation strategies, and analyze and discuss literature all while getting their summer reading out of the way.
