About Identity & Brand

Purpose and Value of a Brand & Identity As a district leader that strives for excellent communication, Community Consolidated School District 181 sends out a tremendous amount of correspondence each day. It is important that we consider brand & identity in all our communication whether it be within our District, to our students and their families, or to our community. By creating communication standards, we build a consistent, stable brand true to our District. Brand & identity may be described as ‘consistent use of communication rules that builds a feeling about or relationship with an organization’. Identity are the communicaiton rules, a form of standardization with an extensive amount of thought and creativiy given to each element that becomes part of those standards; a brand is the result of consistent use of those creative, standardized elements of communication, the result being an emotion, feeling or thought regarding an organization. We have taken steps towards building an identity and resulting brand. We first put our focus on our goals and purpose. We then create and apply rules to various areas of District, School and Self identities considering graphics, language, presentations, and promotions. In the end, we create templates and document rules that all District staff may follow. The result is a consistent .... our District brand.

Typeface or Font Our typeface is Avenir, pronounced ‘av-en-eer’. A font is a document on your computer that has instructions for a particular weigt and style of a typeface. So Avenir is our typface and you may have a font on your computer for Avenir Bold Oblique or Avenir Light.

Leading and Line Spacing Leading and line spacing are terms used to describe the space between lines. Leading is a printers term used to describe a particular measurement between lines. A paragraph’s leading is written like a fraction with the font’s point size over the number of points from baseline to baseline. For example, this paragraph uses the font Avenir Book at 10 points with 11.5 points of space from baseline to baseline. We would write that as 10/11.5. Both Pages and Word use default line spacing that does not equal to single space or one point leading. For example, Mircrosoft Word (version 2013) uses a default line spacing that is equal to 1.08 lines.* Not only is this larger than a single space, it is not one point of leading. Be aware too, that some programs may use a percentage of the font size as spacing. (*https://support.office.com/en-in/article/Changethe-line-spacing-615b5334-d7cb-4c8c-9a4b-1b771ecf4f8b) D181’s stationery template uses the default line spacing, but when you need to squeeze in more text on a page, feel free to use 10/11 (ten over eleven) for your leading. When using bullets, you may use solid leading or 10/10 for example.

Word Spacing To double space after a period or not is the question; the answer is ‘not’. Double spacing after a period expired when the days of typewriters expired. Please use a single space after a period. Double spacing creates distracting gaps for the reader.

To Whom It May Concern: This is our new template for our District 181 stationery. Please customize this template by adding your own information in the footer below, but be sure not to touch the logo or District information in the footer. Margins: Margins are set to: Top 1.4”, Bottom 1.07”, Inside 1”, Outside 1”, Gutter 0, Header .3”, Footer .4” and Mirror margins is selected. As you type and move off the page, Word will automatically set up the next page with the header and footer. Font: Our official font is Avenir. In this particular document, we are using Avenir Light at 10 point with 12 point line spacing (called leading). The proper way to write that is 10/12 and stated as “ten over twelve”. This means that you have 2 points of space between lines or 12 minus 10. To make a line or header bold, use Avenir Heavy. Changing the leading in Word: To adjust the line spacing or ‘leading’, select the text you wish to change. Go to format > paragraph > line spacing. Select ‘single’ and you’re done. If you want more control over the leading, select ‘exact’ and change the leading to whatever you wish. Phone numbers: To format phone numbers correctly, we use periods instead of dash marks (i.e. 630.861.4900). It is part of our new branded look. If you asked for preprinted stationery, you will receive that within the next few weeks. Thank you! Sincerely,

Paper Weight / Thickness There are more than several categories of paper including: bond, text, cover, index. Paper thickness is described in pounds (lb.) per 500 sheets; but in the US, each paper category (i.e. bond, text) is weighed at a different size. So a 70lb text can be the same g/m2 as a 28 lb. bond.
