“ X E N ITH D N A” (LEFT) WILLIAM TURNER ’18, PRODUCT DESIGN

DNA was a collaborative project done with Xenith, where the students were asked to explore style and protection in a football helmet. Turner really wanted to focus on what the DNA of a football player is when he was designing this football helmet. He wanted to give Xenith a project that explored different facets of design and practical product integration that benefits the player. Turner collaborated with a student at CCS by the name of Zeke Anderson who has given him valuable insight into being a football player. DNA’s design was inspired by the intimidation when looking into the eyes of a cheetah, its elegant and graceful lunge when attacking prey, and also its sleek and slender form. Other aspects of the helmet that focus on the practical product integration include a spring-loaded hinge attached to the facemask that gives the player quick and easy access to their face as well as a centralized location where a ratchet tightening system is placed in the chin cup of the helmet, giving the player the flexibility to tighten or loosen the fit of the helmet on a whim.

“Bubble,” a collection inspired by bubble-wrap and its protective nature, was designed with leather. A new system was created in order to design the “bubble leather.”

COL L EGE FOR CR E ATI V E ST U DI ES COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES

Welcome to the 36th Detroit International Wine Auction benefiting the College for Creative Studies. I want to thank Chairs Danialle and Pete Karmanos and the Leadership Committee for making this year’s event an unforgettable experience at the Downtown Boxing Gym. Danialle and Pete’s tremendous support for CCS over the years includes a recent $1 million pledge to match the sponsorship dollars raised tonight. Wine auction proceeds support student scholarships and free art programs for Detroit youth. The Karmanos’ match will support the College’s new Fashion Accessories Design program. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Marta Delfa, Brand Ambassador & Educator for Bodegas Torres, our Featured Vintner for this evening. Bodegas Torres is one of Spain’s oldest wineries, founded in 1870 and run by the fifth generation of the Torres family today. I thank Marta and Bodegas Torres for their generosity tonight. My thanks also go to Lear Corporation for its Presenting Sponsorship and longstanding significant partnership with the College and its students, and General Motors, which is once again our Lead Sponsor and continues its legacy of support for the school from which it recruits so many talented designers. This event has grown to be one of the largest wine auctions in the country. You, our donors, have made this happen through your generosity, and your commitment to advancing the creative spirit in Detroit. Scholarship support is the number-one need of the College; ninety-eight percent of our students receive some sort of financial aid, and your gifts allow the College to nurture and enrich the talent of promising artists from metro Detroit and around the world. This evening is a celebration of creativity, generosity and support for an outstanding institution. Tonight, savor the fine wines, unique setting, and please, raise your paddles in support of this outstanding institution. On behalf of the College for Creative Studies Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and most importantly, the students, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Keith E. Crain Chair

T H A N K YOU!

College for Creative Studies gratefully recognizes the generosity of Danialle and Peter Karmanos, Jr. who recently pledged $1 million to match the sponsorship funds raised for tonight’s event, to support CCS’s Fashion Accessories Design program. DA N I A L L E K A R M A N O S PETER KARMANOS, JR.

What if? Two words that can … and will … change everything. At CCS, students are provided with the opportunity to look at the world and wonder. What if?

The Fashion Accessories Design program prepares students to work in the global fashion industry, educating them in the design and manufacturing of products, including footwear, handbags, leather goods and accessories hardware. It links creative development with knowledge of manufacturing, trend forecasting, market research and merchandising for a comprehensive view of the industry. This investment will help us recruit and support the most talented students from around the country and the world — the next generation of great accessories designers.

That is where change begins and ideas become action. We are honored to chair the 36th Detroit International Wine Auction. The College for Creative Studies embodies innovation, fearlessness in the face of hesitation and — quite frankly — ideas that drive Detroit. It is a privilege to collaborate on tonight’s experience with one of Detroit’s original thought leaders. We chose the Downtown Boxing Gym, first and foremost, because it is simply a very cool place run by some very cool people doing some very cool things. But there’s more to it than that — much more. The Gym represents another set of attributes that truly resonates with us: Toughness, determination, stamina, optimism. Characteristics that immediately come to mind when those in the know think of the Motor City. On the surface, CCS and the Gym seem worlds apart, but they are two sides of the same coin, a combined strength that epitomizes what Detroit has always been, what it is today, and what it will be for generations to come. We hope you enjoy the event, and we are eternally grateful for the support. What we are doing together is so critically important. Your contributions will go directly to assist CCS students who really need the help. Not only are you enabling dreams to be realized, but you are also helping ensure talent does not go unrealized — talent destined to make the world a better place. Your support also allows CCS to bring the gift of art through free programs to more than 4,000 children in Detroit, inspiring the next generation of CCS hopefuls. So, let’s raise our glasses and toast to the continued success of CCS and what it means to the students, our community and, yes, the world.

Danialle and Peter Karmanos, Jr.

Before finishing college she also spent time abroad in Ireland improving her English. Marta began working directly at the Miguel Torres winery in 2007. Experienced in presentations, wine tourism, client relations and with a very well-developed knowledge in Spanish wine, in 2011 she was promoted to the Torres Global Brand Ambassador. In late 2014, Marta embarked upon a new adventure being expatriated to the U.S. to take on a key role as the Torres Brand Ambassador & Educator. Marta is a Sommelier by trade and a tremendously passionate wine enthusiast at heart. Ever since she started working in the wine business, she has participated in numerous wine tastings, seminars, food festivals and continually taking wine and spirits educational courses. The twin brothers rose out of their humble beginnings at The Colburn School of Performing Arts, as they began to explore, master and revamp different interpretations of tap dancing by blending quick footwork with a punch of attitude. Mirroring not only the physical appearance of the other, the Scott boys possess an extraordinary amount of dance chemistry that explodes into electrifying performances. With their recent appearances on Disney’s hit television show, Shake It Up and Nickelodeon’s Yo Gabba Gabba, Sean and John prove to be entertainers with an X-factor and overflowing passion for their craft.

Fritz Hatton and his immediate family own Arietta, one of Napa’s top producers of Bordeaux-style blended wines. He is also the nation’s most experienced wine auctioneer, having begun his career in Christie’s Wine Department in 1980. After a 12-year management career for Christie’s in North America and the Far East, Hatton took a musical sabbatical on the West Coast in the early 1990s, and conducted his first auction for the Napa Valley Vintners in 1992. Out of his musical and wine country experiences with his winemaker friend John Kongsgaard emerged a wine brand with a musically inspired name: Arietta. In 1995 Hatton headed to Christie’s New York to serve as Director of Christie’s U.S. Wine Auction Department. In 1998, he returned to California to launch Arietta with his wife, Caren. He remained with Christie’s as Consultant and Principal Wine Auctioneer before joining Zachys Wine Auctions in 2002. He continues to conduct all commercial wine auctions for Zachys, as well as numerous charity wine auctions nationwide, in addition to overseeing the production and sales of Arietta. Fritz and Caren Hatton reside in Napa, California, with their two daughters, Libby and Hattie. A native of Michigan, Hatton is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and a summa cum laude graduate of Yale with a degree in English Literature. He returned to Yale as one of the first students to enroll in the Yale School of Organization and Management, from which he received an MBA in 1979. Apart from family and wine, his major interest is classical music, and he is just as happy playing the piano as he is encouraging bidders to turn cash into collectible wine. This is Fritz Hatton’s 16th time serving as auctioneer for the Detroit International Wine Auction, and we welcome him back!

Donated by James Dicke Money Road Ranch is a 40-acre vineyard in the heart of Oakville, among the vines that produced Napa Valley’s first 100-point Cabernets. The Gargiulo family, making their first Cabernet from here in 2000, are now among the most highly regarded Cabernet producers in Napa Valley. The 2007 Cabernet is opulent, balanced and structured thanks to the region’s hot days and cool nights. Bright, succulent cherry and blackberry fruit, signatures of their wines, develop into rich plum, cassis, dark cocoa and tobacco. Their Merlot shows a delicate balance of bright blue and black fruit, oak, tobacco and dark chocolate, a voluptuous wine with depth, complexity and length. Continuum, a partnership between Tim Mondavi, his sister Marcia Mondavi Borger and their late father, Robert, was founded in 2005 to produce a single estate wine, recognized among the world’s finest. Sourced from grapes grown on Pritchard Hill in the western hills above Oakville, Continuum is a striking wine, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance a blend of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. It offers gorgeous aromatics and intense, beautifully expressive fruit of dark berries, chocolate, graphite, flowers, licorice and sexy caramel-tinged oak.

Since its founding in 192 by the Wagner family, Caymus has produced some of the world’s finest Cabernets, nationally and internationally acclaimed. The Caymus Special Selection is considered to be one of the top Cabernets made in California, debuting in 1975 when Charlie Wagner and his son Chuck chose their best barrels for the limited production Special Selection, a 100% Cabernet bottling. Both wines are classically proportioned, richly flavored, amazingly complex, deep, concentrated, full-bodied and extremely long. The 2001 displays beautiful aromatic complexity redolent of ripe plum, coffee, blackberry, mineral, slate, chocolate and cedary oak. The 2003 offers copious amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, spice box, new leather and oak. It is rounded, mouthfilling, textured and multi-dimensional.

Their diverse portfolio comprises 17 wines and 5,000 cases. Friends since childhood, they founded their operation in 2001 in Healdsburg, focusing on small-lot, single-vineyard Cabernet, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They want wines that offer more delicate nuance with added layers of complexity, and so often ferment their wines with whole clusters. The Cabernet from their Clajeux Vineyard is rich and fruity thanks to a long, slow flavor development. The Cabernet from Fellom Ranch on Montebello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains is voluptuous, offering balanced grapes with intense concentration and varietal purity, black and blue fruit, laced with licorice and cassis. Clary Ranch wines have soaring aromatics, high natural acidity, lively and complex red and dark fruit, with notes of earth, spice and herbs. The little-known red Trousseau grape from France’s Jura region, grown in the Luchsinger Vineyard in Clear Lake AVA, shows dry strawberry compote, essence of raspberry and a juicy finish. The Old Vine White is an heirloom field blend of Sylvaner, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, producing grainy acidity and fresh juice. The Gamay Noir, an homage to Beaujolais, displays bright strawberry, balsamic, rose petal, raspberry and red cherry. The Watson Ranch Vineyard is the source of great Chardonnay of singular character, with herbal-tinged grapefruit and honeyed fruit. Chardonnay from the Trout Gulch Vineyard in Santa Cruz Mountains, made from the Wente clone, reveals great natural acidity, notes of peach, pear, apple and orange zest, a very age-worthy wine. Peter Martin Ray Vineyard, son of the legendary California vintner, Martin “Rusty” Ray, in Santa Cruz Mountains, is the source of rich, mountain- grown fruit, flowers and bayberry for distinctive aromas and flavors. The Cabernets from Montecillo Vineyard on the ridge line high above Kenwood offer great structure and balance, and age gracefully for decades. The late-ripening, low-alcohol wine from Que Syrah Vineyard is spicy, with an aromatic personality, brilliant color and vibrant briary fruit.

They aim for bright, racy Pinots and precise, chiseled Chardonnays of mouthwatering and saturated fruit; wines that capture the freshness and energy of the region, kissed by cool fogs and ocean breezes of the Pacific, matching the beauty of the vineyards with the wilds of the redwoods. Their watchword is simplicity, allowing the vineyards to be the teachers, with winemakers the students. Elliott Vineyard Pinots have a dynamite nose, liqueur-like of pure red cherry, laced with florals, herbs and spice. The wines are deep, rich, dark and loamy, elegant and silky. The Costalina Pinot is spectacular, displaying a classic Burgundian nose combined with red Sonoma fruit, that is echoed on the palate, ending in a smooth, velvety finish. The Marena Chardonnay is a blend of young vine fruit from Porter-Bass, Charles Heintz and a parcel on Occidental Road. Aromas and flavors of apricot, peach, white flowers and chamomile are soft, open-knit, exquisite and balanced. The Porter-Bass Chardonnay features racy aromas of lemon curd and a shale minerality, with refined but expressive flavors of pear, fresh meadow flowers segueing to more lemony nuances, white pepper and mineral, producing a vivid, crystalline personality.

Donated by Friends of CCS Professional race car driver, Randy Lewis and his wife, Debbie, established a small, totally hands-on winery in Napa Valley in 1992, making Cabernets that are bold, rich, structured and polished. The 2013 is a hedonistic, supersized, pedal-to-the-medal, open-throttle expression of flavor, with a seductive interplay of plump grapes and jazzy oak. Scents and tastes offer elegant tiers of plum, blackberry, currant, licorice, vanilla and mocha are pure and graceful on a long aftertaste. The Beaux Freres Pinot is supple, expressive and multi-layered with aromas and flavors of plum, currant, pomegranate and violet that come together harmoniously persisting in to a long, well-balanced finish. The Produttori del Barbaresco coop, which only produces wines made from Nebbiolo, requires its members to bring all of their grapes to the coop. The fruit is valued by quality to ensure the finest grapes are in the wines. Intense aromas of cherry, rose, licorice and tar pick up tobacco, spice and mineral elements on the palate. Concentrated, yet elegant and expressive with more to give, it ends with a long aftertaste of fruit, underbrush and mineral. English gentleman, tech-millionaire turned vintner Peter Michael has built a stellar reputation on Sonoma County wines, prized for their luscious mountain-grown fruit, are elegant and powerful, yet graceful and harmonious, emphasizing vineyard terroir. But this bottling proves his deft touch extends to Napa. Having acquired the vineyard in 2009, this classically structured Napa Cab shows a lavish use of New French oak, adding graceful, textural allure and heightened aromatic presence. Pure and supple with explosive dark and red berry flavors, it is silky with a polished texture and the gravelly crushed rock profile adds a dimension of dust and mineral. Evening Land, known for compelling, terroir-driven Pinots and Chardonnays, but this is Oregon’s highest scoring wine to date. Seductive, silky and supple, gorgeous plum, currant, blueberry and spice flavors are layered on a lithe frame, coming together harmoniously on a long, expressive finish.

These wines are from one of the greatest vineyards in Burgundy and very difficult to acquire in this country. The vintage of 1964 was a good one and 1966 was outstanding. The wines from these vintages are fully mature but aging gracefully and they still have a chance of offering drinking pleasure, with some aromatics and subtle sweetness. With older wines, one can’t be sure but that’s what makes wine interesting. The 1971 Latour is the wine of the Medoc and arguably the wine of the vintage. It has evolved beautifully over the years, offering extraordinary aromatic complexity and surprisingly deep, concentrated flavors atypical for the vintage. Rich, structured, elegant, yet complex, it has a sweet mid-palate of black fruit, dried herbs, cedar, smoke and coffee, carrying through to a long, concentrated finish. Playfulness is a reoccurring narrative throughout Cook’s work. He is working on expanding themes of playfulness through sculptural works, paintings and installations. Typically allowing the mediums to speak for themselves, Cook allows playfulness to come through by maintaining a formalist focus on color principles, line quality, shape and form, and abstracted representations of symbols and signs.

Kevin McCoy is currently an artist in residence at Fortress Studios located in the Northend neighborhood of Detroit. McCoy’s art is an investigation of the self. His inspirations vary from western and Japanese calligraphy, the movement of tai chi, and the work of modern painters ranging from impressionists to graffiti artists. Due to the overload of information in today’s world, McCoy’s connection to painting is compulsive in nature and comments on the complexity of language and the role of letters in communication, or lack thereof. Using letters to structure his mark-making, he creates non-objective images out of obvious forms.

Robert Madvin was first introduced to glass while enrolled in high school by his older brother, Andrew Madvin, also a successful glass artist. He later studied glass-blowing at CCS and the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii. Madvin’s primary inspiration derives from nature; his artwork focuses on natural elements, textures and color that he encounters in his travels and his day-to-day endeavors. While Madvin was studying in Hawaii he developed his most prominent glass sculpture series called “Pohaku,” meaning “rock” or “stone.”

Andrea Del Rio’s ideas come from the beauty in nature, fashion and anything that sparkles. She uses various mediums, like acrylic, ink, watercolor, resin and digital software. Layering all these mediums helps her achieve the right style and idea. The motivation to keep going as an artist has been instilled in her by a multidisciplinary education in Illustration, Fibers and Fine Art. What she has learned in these fields allows her work to be trans-media and versatile.

Drought was not to blame; the cause was largely an unusually long period of bloom which resulted in an uneven set, and fewer and smaller bunches. Like “only children,” the grapes received more attention the they typically do, scored high on the SATs, and were bottled into the Ivy League (or U of M Honors College). Arietta’s bottling of large formats was one-third of normal, and only the flagship H Block (Cabernet Franc and Merlot) and Cabernet Sauvignon made it into imperial (6L) format. We are delighted to honor the College for Creative Studies by offering the first of these imperials, the Arietta H Block #1/10 and the Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon #1/5, along with a tasting for up to eight guests in the Arietta caves in Napa Valley. Guest accommodation comprises three independent residences within the former estate cottage. Each is named after local grape varieties: Kotsifali, Malvasia & Liatiko. The cottage has been completely renovated with stylish, luxurious residences that all feature modern comforts and amenities. A large hall is also available for private dining, celebration events and corporate meetings. With three luxurious residences configured as suites, the cottage has been a feature of the estate for centuries. A previous owner attempted to dispel pirates from the area with myths of ghosts. This legend adds to the considerable charm and history of the property, which is totally private and can accommodate three separate couples or a group of six people. Private terraces give guests the opportunity to unwind amidst the spectacular views of this estate. Each dwelling is named after a grape varietal and wine-tasting is included as part of each stay for all guests to make the experience of Scalani Hills and the Boutari winery estate unique. Each morning, a delicious breakfast of local Cretan delicacies is prepared for you by our dedicated kitchen team, all home-made, and with further fresh snacks available throughout the day. Particular items on offer include grape jams and must biscuits. Dinner can also be arranged in advance, drawing on local cuisine, regional specialities and, of course, wine — all prepared in accordance with your own tastes and preferences, and naturally paired with the renowned Boutari wines of the estate.

After touring the caves and learning the rich history of Schramsberg, followed by an explanation of traditional method of making sparkling wines, you will be guided through a fun exploration of the nuances between wine and food and how each of these can affect the way you taste and experience flavors. You will taste five of their limited-production sparkling and still wines paired with select cheeses. The 2014 bubbly has a bright, fresh lemon-meringue, green apple, apricot and orange blossom fragrance that is intermingled with hints of honey and lemon zest that segue to a palate of peaches, pear and bright pineapple that carry through to the long, tangy, buttery, creamy finish, etched with baking spices. The J. Davies Cabernet, a gem from Diamond Mountain, is juicy, plush, ripe and racy, offering finesse and charm. The wine exhibits floral, black and red currant notes, raspberry jam, blackberries, dark cherries, licorice, spice and black pepper, nuanced with oak and earth, for a harmonious, well-balanced mouthfeel and long, lingering, full-bodied finish.

Nils’ vision of excellence is well-known in the Napa Valley and beyond as he produced the first 100-point rated Cabernet Sauvignon when he worked at Groth Winery from Robert Parker. Nils’ and Diana’s son, Kirk, since 2008, is now owner and winemaker of Venge Vineyards. Kirk has proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build on the family legacy. You will enjoy a visit to the Venge winery ranch house in the Palisades Mountain range overlooking the valley where seated tastings are privately hosted. The Chardonnay offers aromas of honey, marmalade, citrus zest, toasted pine nuts, crisp lemon drop, pineapple, green apple and coconut. These fresh and savory notes are mirrored on the palate in a balance of bright acidity and full body that is lush and bold with a hint of oak. The Cabernet, a cross-AVA blend from mountain benchland and valley floor vineyards, shows velvety tannins that caress the palate from a full-bodied, beautifully fruited wine laced with blueberry, black currant and spring flowers. A classic wine, very impressive, it is charming and irresistible. The Scout’s Honor is a gorgeous, concentrated assemblage of aromas of stone fruits, herbs, violets, cherry, anise and honeysuckle. The palate is rich from old-vine Zinfandel and shows loads of super ripe blackberry, pepper, char and tannin from Syrah, Charbono and Petite Sirah, culminating in an extra-long finish of mouthcoating deliciousness.

Renowned for its incredible richness, opulence and longevity, it is the King of Sauternes, the world’s greatest sweet wine. At Yquem, they proudly boast that only one glass of wine per vine is produced, and it shows. In 1855, Chateau d’Yquem, the Sauternes appellation’s most prestigious estate, was ranked in a class by itself as a Premier Grand Cru. The 1996 is very scented, heady and concentrated, with a glorious creamy rich texture combined with great elegance and length. It has brilliant and powerful fruit, with roasted nuts, creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade and peaches. The 1997 is a sensational Yquem, light gold in color, offers a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously textured, it has good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin. The hedonistic 2003 is subtle, racy, full, refined, massive and dense, showing great class and length. Intense aromas and flavors feature lemon rind, vanilla cream, pineapple, dried apricot and papaya that culminate in a vanilla-coconut finish. The 2004 is a glorious Yquem, with a creamy, honeyed nose, tinged with almond, apple blossom and hazelnut. The palate displays flowers, honey, plum, pineapple, lemon, peach and caramel. It is balanced, refined, racy and complex, with an elegant finish. The harvest of 2005 was so extraordinary that Yquem not only made wine but also made a special bottle. The 2005 shows superb focus, exquisite balance, perfect acidity and is full, round and velvety with pure and juicy flavors. The beautifully perfumed and rich palate offer honey, flowers, vanilla, almond, green plum, ginger, heather, pineapple and apple, all blended together, leading to a long finish etched with flowers, dried citrus, honey and pear tart. Chateau d’Yquem Ygrec “Y”, a dry white wine, has a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The 2008 is pale, golden yellow with lovely brilliant highlights. The intense bouquet features white peaches, linden blossoms, boxwood with toasty and mineral overtones. Aromas develop in aeration in the glass, while retaining the initial intensity, thereby producing a white wine of unusual intensity.

GALA DINNER LIVE AUCTION

Donated by Ann and James B. Nicholson This is a stellar collection of top Bordeaux from 1982, a vintage renowned for producing some of the most concentrated and potentially complex and profound wines from virtually every appellation. Despite some wonderfully successful years since, the 1982 remains the modern-day reference for many of the greatest wines in Bordeaux. The 1982 Leoville, a 100-point from Robert Parker, is huge, well delineated, extremely concentrated, fresh and hedonistic, a monumental effort, full of lead pencil, sweet black cherries and currants, caramel and minerals, with a jammy character. The 1982 Haut Brion offers the classic scents and tastes of cedar, tobacco, minerals, sweet red and black fruits, in a medium-bodied, opulent texture and a rich, yet elegant style. The 1982 Mouton, another 100-point wine from Parker, reveals rich, unctuously textured, jammy fruit and enormous flavor concentration, a massive and powerful wine, redolent of cedar, chocolate, sweet cassis, tobacco, minerals and exotic spice. The 100-point 1982 Latour, precocious, jammy and forward, it is delicious no matter when the cork is pulled. Sweet, smoky, roasted aromas combine with jammy levels of black currant, cherry and prune-like fruit that segue to a palate of cedar, tobacco, coffee and ripe fruit, ending in a finish that goes on forever. The 1982 Margaux shows huge extract and richness, is seamlessly integrated, full-bodied, large scaled and concentrated, offering up notes of incense, sweet truffles, smoke, black currants, flowers and damp earth. The 1982 Yquem is a rich, massive, sweet, seamless classic, filled with honey-dripped coconuts, pineapple, caramel, crème brulee, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, dried herbs, smoke, peach and apricot, a brilliant wine, absolutely delicious.

Donated by Friends of CCS Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select is a wine of place, produced each vintage from selected blocks of hillside vineyards surrounding the winery. The Hillside Estate Vineyard is 54 acres on steep, amphitheater-like rocky outcroppings and knolls, resembling a box canyon. Virtually non-existent top soil is the reason for the intense flavors. The wine spends 32 months in 100% new French oak, but the wines exhibit no woody taste. The family-run winery remains one of the most admirable operations in California and Hillside Select, with its gorgeous track record as one of the world’s most prodigious Cabernets. Hillside Select Cabernets consistently express voluptuous fruit, rich flavors and velvety texture, all characteristic of grapes grown in the Stags Leap District. The 2006 Hillside Select, densely purple in color, has notes of earth, cedar, forest floor, red and black currants and toast in the nose. Full-bodied, ripe, rich and firm, flavors of dark berry, mocha, anise, bay leaf, almonds, mineral, mint and lead pencil are powerful, dense and chewy, ending in a very long finish. Rating this wine 95 points, James Suckling stated “I’m thinking Pauillac but tasting California.”

The Torres family name has been connected with wine for over three centuries. The secret of the making of the great family wines has been passed on to Celeste, 100% Tempranillo, created in our Ribera del Duero winery at almost 3,000 feet above sea level. The Fompedraza estate is located in the central-eastern part of the Duero river valley, close to the town of Fompedraza and the Durantón River, a tributary that joins the Duero near Peñafiel. The relief of the landscape is gentle, and high plateaus traversed by steep, narrow valleys characterize the area, giving the region its distinctive morphology. The area’s altitude significantly influences the region’s climate as well as its winegrowing vocation. The area shows a predominance of Tertiary and Quaternary continental deposits. Specifically, the estate sits atop deposits from the Upper Miocene and Quaternary periods. The main lithology of the Upper Miocene is based on gray limestone interspersed with loam, whereas clay predominates in the Quaternary areas. The soils that form on top of these materials tend to exhibit medium to fine textures and are very rich in carbonate.

This wine is an homage to the monks of the courageous Carthusian order, who arrived in Priorat in 1095, where they cultivated vines. In 1835, a violent crowd destroyed the work of a lifetime and sacked the monastery, events which later culminated in the auctioning of church lands known as the Desamortización de Mendizábal. In 1996, the Torres Family began work on the planting of vineyards on the slopes of Priorat, strewn with the hard, black slate-like Licorella stone. TA S T I N G N O T E S Wonderfully intense on the nose, with predominant notes of dark cherry and plum jam, against a mentholated eucalyptus backdrop and notes of toast. Sweet on entry, very velvety palate, and well-structured, culminating in an elegant, fresh finish.

Since 1946 the Torres family has been making Floralis Moscatel Oro, one of the Mediterranean’s most characteristic dessert wines, nectar with an unmistakable floral perfume and a voluptuous and sensual palate. TA S T I N G N O T E S This sweet wine is made from one of the Mediterranean’s most classical stocks. The Greeks called it “Anathelicon Moschaton” and the Romans “Apianae,” because it attracts the bees that, from the Muscat flowers, make the delicious nectar of their honey. Muscatel has an unmistakable aromatic perspective that is highly characteristic of its variety, with seductive floral perfumes of rose, geranium, and lemon verbena. On the mouth it is voluptuous, concentrated yet light, full and with a delicate character. WINEMAKING Fermentation: Stainless-Steel Aging: One year in stainless-steel tanks, 2 – 4 months in bottle

826 National is a nonprofit started in 2001 by Dave Eggers. It is a family of seven nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, with expository and creative writing. The idea behind Wendzinski’s take on the 826 brand for this city is illustrated in the store This and That. The store sells bits and pieces of products that are meant to be put together to work effectively. Playing with language and a unique, wide variety of products, the idea is that people and objects work better when they work together.
