COMMUNICATION DESIGN//WHAT WE WE ARE SUE, DOUG, MATT, CHAD AND KRISTIN, THE COMMUNICATION DESIGN DEPARTMENT AT CCS. OUR CURRICULUM COMBINES TRADITIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGN, WITH INTERACTION DESIGN, AND MOTION DESIGN SO THAT STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO SOLVE ANY DESIGN PROBLEM USING A VARIETY OF DIGITAL AND ANALOG MEDIA. This interdisciplinary approach helps us THINK,

DO... PLAY, and MAKE in new and unex-

pected ways using whatever tools are needed to communicate an idea. Our students are very resourceful and curious, finding inspiration from simple drawing tools to mini computing devices, discovering that their creative potential is limitless. CD Students, draw, paint, print, type, cut, photograph, print, connect, wire, code, move, gesture, touch, video, capture, record, document, write, and build dynamic design solutions for the 21st century.

WHAT WE MAKE... @CCS//CD

03.

COMMUNICATION DESIGNERS MAKE THINGS THAT YOU SEE AND INTERACT WITH EVERYDAY. WE DESIGN PHYSICAL OBJECTS, DIGITAL EXPERIENCES, EMOTIVE MESSAGES THAT CONNECT AND COMMUNICATE WITH SPECIFIC USERS IN MIND. Every project starts with a communication goal(s) and works from our research to THINK through a concept and strategy from an informed place. From there we PLAY around with the idea, visualizing it in a variety of ways, so that we can test out our idea and work iteratively to solve the problem at hand. From there we decide if the project is best serves as an object or experience that is digital or analog. As a result, we MAKE books, packaging, corporate branding for dynamic and static environments, magazines, signage, websites, mobile apps, navigational systems real and digital, user interfaces, movie title sequences, and exhibitions at museums or trade shows. Many projects evolve to connect with architectural spaces, urban planning, mobility, and social practice. WE ARE UNLIKE ANY OTHER DESIGN DEPARTMENT LOCALLY OR REGIONALLY. We stand apart from our competition because we provide students with a holistic curriculum that prepares them for a professional career in Communication Design, with experience in Graphic,

HOW WE LAUNCH... @CCS//CD WHILE DIFFICULT TO TRACK, OUR RECORDS INDICATE GRADUATE PLACEMENT RATES ARE QUITE HIGH WITHIN THE PROFESSION, WITH SOME YEARS REACHING 100%. It is not just a high placement rate, our graduates are also finding excellent job opportunities that also pay well. We find our graduates’ starting salaries begin at the national career average for the profession. Yes, the career average! The figure is in the neighborhood of 50k*. The top salaries for recent graduates can be twice that amount. This year, as in past years, at the department’s annual career event the recruiters out numbered the students. We also have an excellent Career Services Department on campus that works with students to launch their careers and alumni who need help advancing their career goals.

OUR COMMUNICATION DESIGN ALUMNI NETWORK OFFERS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW GRADUATES. OUR CCS/CD ALUMNI KNOW THE SKILLS DEVELOPED IN OUR PROGRAM. THEY SEEK CANDIDATES OF LIKE MIND. *Salary figures, AIGA ANNUAL SALARY GUIDE

RE/PROGRAM IS A SUMMER STUDY PROGRAM IN EUROPE. STUDENT’S ALSO TRAVEL ANNUALLY WITHIN THE U.S. TO VISIT STUDIOS AND ATTEND CONFERENCES. TRAVEL HELPS TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE OUR STUDENTS LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

The department hosts an annual European summer study program based in the Netherlands. The program is three weeks and students receive 3 credits for the experience.

Travel is coordinated by our two student groups, AIGA Students in Design + Women In Design with the support of faculty and staff. The student leadership teams of both groups set the travel agenda, organize fund raising opportunities, coordi-
