Abstract The city is constituted by numerous architectures, while building is a small microcosm of the city; there is an ambiguous boundary between the relationships of two, especially in Asian cities. Unlike well-organized western cities, cities of Taiwan is one of the most interesting places as there are always plenty of chaos and unintelligible division between public and private area. From another perspective, the fuzziness between architecture and city can be seen by discussing the linkage of architectural site and urban context. Boundaries exist visible and invisible, tangible or intangible, from more broadly definition, even could become abstract concepts. The relationships between people, the site, and even the city are important issues of architectural design, and involved three different scales. This portfolio attempts to take these three different scales of boundaries as the basis of index. With rational and logistic analysis, the boundaries are divided into three tabs from small to large-scale. For the purpose of analysis current relations, and finding the design approach to the boundaries. Tag 1 : Boundary of Human Perception and activity Human perception and activities are beyond the tangible boundaries, their occurrence therefore shape the relationship between architecture and the city. For example, a sheltered space makes people feel calm, and open space thus drives people to move; Both the quality of capaciousness and stability form the feature of boundary from an observation point overlooking the view. One can understand how people comprehend the environment with needs, perceptions and emotions by thinking man’s perception as a starting point of architectural design. Thus, human and the city are linked by connecting the urban landscape and the human circulation. The activities define the private sphere in the public area, for example, a group of people talking on the plaza, the private field is generated by the intimate interaction between people. If we try to separate the different levels of publicness of daily living, there is a possibility to maximize the publicness of private place, then the activity towards the city defines the boundary of architecture and the urban space.
Tag 2 : Boundary of Site Two densities of site context differ, one of them is surrounded by dense neighborhood and small alley, while the other is low-density, pressed from both sides of river and viaduct, the leftover of the city. How to fill these to different situations is an issue. With the flexibility to fit in the leftover, and with the linkage of the neighborhood to activate the interface of the boundary. Tag 3 : Boundary of City Urban logistics system is used to find the potential site on the excising urban context, by seeking the architecture as yeast or a progenitor cell, and expanding it to a larger level. Architecture is here a component to invade to the urban scale. It is no longer a singular object but a unit that can be arrayed or expanded. The boundary is defined by the service of urban system. The three tabs, starting from an aspect of taking architecture as a singular object, try to fuzzy the boundary and even expand to the city; then zoom out to the scale of site context, no matter what the density is, to fill or fix the boundary of a site. Both of the first two tabs discuss either fuzziness or repairs the boundary, and believe the existence of boundary. The last tab, however, concerns going beyond the boundary. Logistics are not only the method of rational deduction, but also the information of urban system. The logistic system transcends the tangible boundary, not just the activities, or the site, that is free and boundless. On the other hand, it is logical and traceable, constantly changing with the entire factor in the city. The logistic index is now beyond all the tabs. The city itself is an organism, the flow of information, and the consumption of daily living. The boundary can disappear, and withstand on the mobility.

Traditional Courtyard Culture The spatial hierarchy of traditional Taiwanese courtyard houses is the representation of the hierarchy of family members. In a family of three generations, the grandparents occupy the very inner space in courtyard, and also enjoy the maximum of privacy. The courtyard shared by all members is located in the center of a house and enclosed by rooms and other fixed service programs such as dining room, kitchen and sanitary rooms. That is to say the other flexible activities of a family such as ceremonies and agricultural behaviors are likely taken place in here. Providing the occurrence of social activities, the courtyard is a very important element as it agglomerates the family awareness and bringing all members closer to each other. In addition, the courtyard is normally semi-open at the daytime for neighbors or people from the community. This space is in-between public plaza and private property, and it is a place where people are very easy to come and chat with family members. In a village, the courtyard of one family is a place for social activities with welcoming atmosphere, hospitality, kindness and mutual support spirits of traditional communities.
The Furniture Defines Activities The spatial type of traditional courtyard houses is concentric. Since everyone entering the house must pass through courtyard, spontaneously social activities will occur in here. The courtyard is a blank space where a set of wooden benches can transform it into a living room; a cozy deck chair turns it to a napping spot. When harvest season comes, it can be changed to a drying rice field.

Public or Private?
Flexible Space
In the modern society, urbanization shrinks the size of a family, brings about the weakened structure of family relationships. One thing that remains is the requirement to the privacy of certain daily life. Looking closely to the different needs of privacy of daily life, we can layer the activities into several hierarchies. First of all, the living area can be treated as the extensive public area for particular scale of communities, where it can be supervised and welcomed to the neighbors. Secondly, dining area is where the social activities of a household taking place, but it is private to the public. Finally, bedrooms are ultimately private spaces for even the family members.
The field that all kinds of social activities taking place on regular basis is defined as a “flexible space”, in another word, the “courtyard”. The incidents in a house are routines and have a strong correlation to the object in spaces. The occurrence of an event very likely depends on furniture setting in a space. For instance, a simple platform will turn the courtyard of a traditional house into a theater; with some stands and the nice sun and wind, the courtyard will become a perfect place for drying out the rice noodle.
Once the hierarchies of privacy are settled and the ultimate private spaces being enclosed, we can strengthen the social activities into its massive form. Traditional
New urban
Courtyard
Courtyard
However, comparing to a countryside house, the demand of seasonal use of space is no longer needed in urban life. The activities in city housing have become very monotonous. Because of the limited space, each usage of rooms has become designated, and the flexible space has died away. As a consequence, the seasonal or spontaneous activities disappeared. We brought out a new typology of urban courtyard houses, based on different demands for privacy. Each level of privacy is enclosed by walls. Like a cabbage, the more inner has the more privacy. Each layer of cabbage rotates a certain angle. The flexible space is the triangular void in-between the walls, generated by every layer of rotation, and initiates the social activities. The flexible spaces themselves also have the hierarchy of privacy. The very outer ring is merged with the urban space. From the urban scale, because of the ambiguous characteristics, the flexible space can release the massive public space to the city, and the angle within the block creates the mobility of people, bringing the interesting events to the city.

The walls enclose each space layer by layer, give different privacy to every triangular courtyard. The story level also plays the role for increasing privacy. For instance, bed rooms are on the top level, and the very inner space.

It is irrational to neglect the numerous needs of housing in the rising urban society. In the FAR (floor area ration) of 100%, one typical city block of Taipei City is 100m* 35m, containing 8 units of typological courtyard house that allows 16 families in each city block. The privacy rises horizontally to the inner unit. When the need for houses expands, in the FAR of 200%, the privacy develops from horizontally to vertically; one typological unit contains 4 families, meaning 32 families in a city block. The first flexible space is linked to the city on the first floor, as the level raised, it gains more privacy. Doubling the FAR from medium density to 400%, and arraying the mid-density typology with newly created semi-private platform, we have highly density courtyard houses. The circulation shows the evidence of hierarchy of privacy, and derivates the new order of courtyard houses.

Urban Infrastructure_ Super-Low Densityexhibition Context Except for the invisible boundaries formed by social activities, the boundary’s attendance of this water-front site is a tangible and knotty administration one. The site is sandwiched by a viaduct and the river. The viaduct is so gigantic and close to the riverside that even located in the prosperous city; its context density is still so low. Without any disturbance, it is like an isolated scene as Garden of Eden. On the land the viaduct stands so firmly, and creates the space underneath this monument, the remaining space of the mechanical age. The remaining space can hardly count as a building site, it is merely a void volume sited by the boundary of the infrastructure. Comparing to the relatively eternal existence of viaducts, architecture is a highly mutable object. We utilize attachable and adaptable structure to respond to the remaining space coming from the infrastructure, as the filling and repairing to the void.

The Site There was a time when people believed that the great architecture saved the city, the economy, the society, the art, and even the human being. This myth is destined to fall with the end of Modern Architecture. The arrogance of elitist architecture bringing dead monuments to the city, at some point of the time, we have to admit that an architect is no longer mighty. Take the Grand Hotel as an example; starting from 1952, the Grand Hotel has once been the landmark of Taipei City. The exaggerating style and expensive cost made it stand out and become the highest ranking hotels in Taiwan, not to mention the political situation of the time, no doubt was allowed under authoritarian control. Standing on the waist of Yuan Mountain and facing Keelung River, one of a million chooses of the site. It is not exaggerating to say that the Grand Hotel was the product of heroism. However, as soon as the Shin-sheng Viaduct started operation in 1983, the Grand Hotel became a mortal. The hotel lost its divinity because of the block of view to Keelung River, and the constantly heavy traffic sending commuters back and forth daily. The significance and eternity of the architecture was questioned.

Strategy Taiwan Architecture Center (TAC) aims to create a center combining the collection of architectural document, exhibition, and educating workshop. TAC provides the opportunity to brainstorm the inspiration, so it is flexible and ever changing. Unlike the authoritative architecture as Grand Hotel, nor the “star” architectures’ fair as Green Expo, the importance of TAC is that it is owned by the people who are using it. This center is not built with immense cost, and it emphasizes the event that is happening here. We try to take advantages of the viaduct as the foundation of the structure of TAC, fixing the remaining space by choosing an adaptable attached structure. It is humble and conforms to the conditions of the site. Different functions of program such as exhibition, collection, workshops, and administration has its own patterns of flexibility.

This site is in the center of a highly density old town context of Taipei. Smallscaled alley runs into this rectangular site, and is rich of charming nostalgic living atmosphere of Taipei. The small alleys are the extension of living scene, especially the old ones, which are the precious heritage of the city, and the common memories of neighborhood. Trying to locate the activities’ path of the community, and linking them with the circulation of museum is the concept of this project. With this concept, diversities of people, including visitors and residents will be brought to the site, and motivate activities along the paths. 23 The Logistic Index of Urban Boundary ROUTE 1 ROUTE 2 ROUTE 3 ROUTE 4

This project started with a representation cube of Taipei City, my approach to this representation was defining each of the six sides as a specific aspect of seeing Taipei, including 1. back alley, fissure 2. moving, mobility, network 3. climate, humidity, umbrella gesture 4. living scene 5. belief, icon, smell 6. landscape, water system The cube consists of 4 pyramids of folded collage triangles; each of the pyramid represents one aspect. When the 4 pyramids wrapped together, the colors on the collage are filtrated by the settled filter, and a kaleidoscope takes shape. The kaleidoscope projects the Taipei impression in my view.

Tainan_ the Historical City
The Opportunity to Regenerate
Tainan is the oldest city of Taiwan, and the abundant heritages make the city rich of culture and give the relaxing atmosphere for living. The old town of Tainan has its history that can be traced back to Chin Dynasty, and the history left a lot of old town elements such as brick wall ruins, old trees, narrow alleys, temples, traditional style of doors and windows and so on. These are the elements that build the old city’s atmosphere. The old town had been expanded like an organism since Chin Dynasty; it was not until the Japanese Colonize Era did this changed. The Japanese government brought in modern city planning, as a consequence, strict and geometrical straight road cut through the old town. At last, the old town elements were hidden in the street blocks.
Nowadays, because of the old town’s crowded condition for street blocks, people start to forget how wonderful it was to live in the relaxing old town. The house vacancy rate in Tainan old town is quite high. The living style and the old town elements are facing the danger of extinction; it is quite possible that in the near future, a top down city renewal, which might be bold and decisive, will erase the valuable pleasure of Tainan city. The extremely convenient public transportation sends people north to south on Taiwan island, and starting a second new living area has become possible. Tainan is a city ideal for people who are willing to get away from the busy north metropolis, and stay for a relatively long time to explore the city. As a result, a new group of people has emerged: the immigrants from other cities in Taiwan. They came here to pursue a nostalgic lifestyle, and bringing cultural activities to the desolate street blocks. With the new rise of cultural activities in Tainan old town, such as gallery, studios, an opportunity to renew the old town has emerged. The renting spaces coming from renovation of historical buildings are ideal for these programs.

Alley Cooperation
Roof Style
Alley Cooperation is a possible type of organization to renovate the old town with a down to top solution. Even with the high vacancy rate for houses in the street block, it is still difficult to rent houses from landlords. People don’t know who to reach. The organization will be the agent bringing landlords and immigrants together. In order to keep the inviting atmosphere, the organization set rules to renovate old buildings, or even be the consultant for regenerating the buildings.
Strategy The strategies of the organization charging the street block renovation are as followings: (1) Identify old town elements, and try to utilize them as much as possible. (2) Merge locals and new immigrants to create the welcoming atmosphere. (3) Locate urban elements and attractions in larger scale.

The Locals Local people’s living scene is happening along the path. In this project, the paths in this street block are Yue Emperor Temple Street (嶽帝廟街) and Fang Stream Street (枋溪 街), two important paths credited by the religious parade and a previous stream. The narrations of stories of locals in the space are directive.

The Wanderers The behaving patterns of wanderers are random. The goal is to create a indicators scattered in the block. When the wanderers became astray in the alley, the finding of indicators is like treasure hunting.
The Grid The grid in the street block is the reference of indicators; it comes from the force of larger landmarks of the city, for example, roundabouts in Tainan (the design in Japanese Colony Era), traditional markets, tourist attractions, and the cross-sections of streets.
The Immigrants The grid is another reference of choosing the settlement locations for immigrants. With this method, the locals and immigrants can be merged together. 35 The Logistic Index of Urban Boundary

I move to Tainan to start my new career. To begin with, I rent a place for 6 months. To get to know the city and local people, they said its an ideal place to start with.
someone is lying on the deck and reading, enjoying himself with such a nice sunny day.
the traditional market just 5 minutes away by walking. The food is fantastic because of the fresh ingredient.
“OK, here is the key of the main door and your room, just go straight to this alley, you will find it.“ The owner said. So I do what he said.
I unpack my stuff, and bringing my towel down stairs. Having a bath will take away my fatigue during the journey. Other guests is cooking themselves dinner, and they invite me to join them, I tell them I will after the bath.
After the dinner, we watch a movie with the projector in the common area. All the rooms are facilitated with minimum furniture, so everyone enjoy their time at the common area.
There is a beautiful brick wall at the end of this alley, looks hundreds of years old, and through the hole of the wall, my new roommate waves to me.
With the beautiful brick wall and a tree, the courtyard is very cosy. My roommate is taking a nap under the tree. I didn’t bother him, went down straight to the bath.
I walk along the wall, step onto the entrance deck,
Other guests bought the grocery at Tainan East Market,
The next morning, I study on the roof top. It is quite nice here, you can have a great view from here. The temple and the traditional Taiwanese houses is just under your feet, and it is very quiet here.

I went to the market this morning, while I was wandering in my neighbourhood, I found a gallery near to my place. The entrance is far on the back of the building, while walking in, another beautiful brick wall on the side.
exploration in the small alley. The first exhibition room has a big window, so you can adore the beauty of the roof with Tainan signature blue sky.
What a quiet place!
Walking further, the wooden doors also has the angle with the building, indicate the direction. The library behind looks very cosy.
Once I enter the gallery, a strange texture of a straight path is leading my way. The woman in the reception tells me this is the indicator of direction in this street block. There are plenty of buildings doing so in the neighbourhood. Follow this direction, you will enjoy your next
I go upstairs to watch the exhibition in room no. 2, as soon as I arrive 2nd floor, through the window, I see a man admiring the wall from the garden, this wall certainly is a art piece. It is as precious as the artwork, as it survived through such a long time.

05 LOGISTIC FARM The Urban System Component Academic Project_ Optional Studio, 2012 Autumn Personal Work Adviser_ Daisuke Nakatomo, Minnie Jan Type_ Facade System Location_ Xing-Yi District (Taipei City)
[Study Model 1/50]
The Regional Service of Logistic System The logistic system is a complicated system that supports the distribution of goods in the city. The logistic system is a city-scaled and adaptable like an organism. It is the application of using invisible information such as road system, usage zoning, industrial structure, the population density and activities of people that made this delicate system function so well. The warehouse of the system is often setting at the edge of the metropolitan in order to save the expensive rent of inventories in city center. Before the logistic truck is ready to departure, all the cargo that need to be sent in one delivery are packed, and the route considering time, traffic and gasoline consumption is settled. Therefore the delivery order and route of a logistic truck indicate a regional boundary of invisible information. The boundary resembles the network, unseen and indiscernible, complicated while accurate and efficient. It is the evidence of the industrial structure and land use, at the same time influence each other within the logistic system. 47 The Logistic Index of Urban Boundary

The Hidden Process
When we eat the salad bought from the convenient stores or picking which cookie we should buy, all the information on manufacturing, fish tank nutrition etc. is written briefly on the tag of a product. This series of simplifying and flatness in manufacturing process information makes the shelf of convenient stores a display of catalogue. Since products that have different conditions are displayed on the same platform, the consumers often need to select the products by themselves based on the information provided on the tag. Going to the convenient store on the corner is just like browsing the Your Neighborhood Refrigerator_7-11 catalogue near you. Unlike the traditional market or supermarket, convenient stores On the other hand, the convenience coming with the logistic system don’t have a regular replenishment time. Each logistic truck of is gradually making the source of food unseen and unreliable. This convenient store has its assigned service reach and distribution project tries to make a system that reveal the process of food stores. Different products are classified based on different making, utilizing the façade space above ground floor of the store, temperature demands, and the timetable of distribution and and demonstrating a visible process of food growing system. The urban component is a flexible framework that can be changed by various conditions. This project tends to initiate with the network of the logistic system, trying to find out the prototype of the urban component. Taking an urban aquaponic vegetable farm as the 50 cm noumenon of the framework setting on logistic system, this project attempts to transform the urban landscape at Xing-yi district of Taipei under this logistic era.

Except for the road adjacent condition, the illumination demand of plant is significant. Instead of choosing buildings that have high stories, the horizontal extension is very welcome. The best choice is the apartment of 2-5 stories, the feature of this kind of street house is that they are often an array along the street, and their faรงades are getting aged and need to be regenerated. Convenient stores only need to rent a single unit on the first floor, and the faรงades of their neighbors can function as the logistic farm.

The aquaponic system is a nitrogen cycling cropping system combining hydroponic and aquaculture. The vegetable growing with aquaponic method can improve productivity and shorten the growing cycle. It utilizes the solution as the source of nutrient, 8 cm of depth and can be easily verticalized, which is suitable for urban HARVEST AMONG WEEKLY HARVEST PANEL AMONG planting. In this project, theWEEKLY completed seeding PANEL transplanted to 8 cmcarry of depth the raft, and the logistic truck the raft from suburb to the8 cm of depth 50 cm city-centered stores. Next, all it takes is to place the raft onto the façade system, and the vegetable will be ready to fully grow. According to the possible installation methods, I analyzed the The Floating Raft potential conditions of the location. Because of the certain 50 cm 50 cm distance of popping out from the original façade, the opening type, awning, terrace type, walkways can be crucial factors.

The plant system is a refillable framework consists of tra nsp la columns of structures. Every 50cm is one vertical unit, sowing nt plant under 30cm and 6 units combine a floor level. Each of the columnsneeded unit: 1 September on the faรงade is a close harvest bed, and the column can be arrayed horizontally. The plant height differs from species. In viewing this, I came out with three categories of height: June beneath 30cm, between 30-80cm, and above 80cm corresponding to 1 unit, 2 units and 3 units, and use oct this criterion to fill the framework. The growing bed skips the windows of the building. The farmer (in this tomato project, the clerk) utilizes the height of truck to harvest 120cm the crops on the second floor.

Re-Thinking Exhibition – The Exhibit Inlaid In The Land We would love to break the conventional way of doing exhibition-the visitors enter the controlled territory and admire the collection or objects within the artificial environment. We propose a new concept-wandering and circling, in which we suggest a new watching experience that is different from the existing one in a large interior space. The new way of watching will happen in an outdoor/semi-outdoor environment where visitors could as well feel the touch of the landscape. Different types of tracks set out from the core area where the fastened facilities are found, and then unfolded into the whole site area. Along with these tracks, people find different types of movable exhibition rooms. The movable rooms designate different exhibit. The exhibition locations vary from time, demands, activity arrangements‌etc. In the other words, there is no fixed program and official mode in this museum. There are not only the exhibited objects, but also the whole span of landscape and civil life as a complete package of exhibition.

Pulsate With Local Civil Life Response to the character of the chosen site in Sansia and Yingge, we believe the character of the museum would be easily accessible, open and lovable, like a grand park with diverse art settings and closely connected to civil life. The core area where houses those fixed facility plays the role of entrance; within the park, visitors could take stroll, wander and rest, participate theme activities or simply enjoy the atmosphere popping into the eyes. The relationship between visitors and the exhibited would be diverse. We would expect more interactions with the exhibited than just watching pictures on the wall. 63 The Logistic Index of Urban Boundary
