Historical Transformation

01 Here to Stay_ Tainan Living & Wandering Proposal Tainan is the oldest city of Taiwan, and the abundant heritages make the city rich of culture and give the relaxing atmosphere for living. The old town of Tainan has its history that can be traced back to Chin Dynasty, and the past Chin Dynasty Before 1896

left a lot of old town elements such as brick wall ruins, mature trees, narrow alleys, temples, traditional style of doors and windows and so on. These are the elements that build the ancient city’s atmosphere. The old town expanded like an organism since Chin Dynasty; it was not until the Japanese Colonize Era did this change. The Japanese government brought in modern city planning, as a consequence, strict and geometrical straight road cut through the old town. At last, the old town elements buried in the street blocks. The site is a beautiful neighborhood but is desolate and worn down throughout the years because the majority of the house owners no longer lives there. The houses not only needs to be renovated but also requires rejuvenated. This project is an urban renewal proposal aiming to preserve the old town atmosphere by a bottom-up urban renewal proposal. I went to the market this morning, while I was wandering in my neighborhood, I found a gallery near to my place.

The entrance is far on the back of the building, while walking in, I saw a beautiful brick wall on the left side.

What a quiet place!

A special texture of path is leading my way. The woman in the reception tells me this is the indicator of direction in this street block. There are plenty of buildings doing so in the neighborhood. Follow this direction, you will enjoy your next exploration in the small alley.

The first exhibition room has a big window, so you can adore the beauty of the roof with Tainan signature blue sky.

Walking further, the wooden doors also has the angle with the building, indicate the direction. The library behind looks very cozy.

I went upstairs to watch the exhibition in room no. 2.

Through the window, I see a man admiring the wall from the garden, this wall certainly is a art piece.

“OK, here is the key of the main door and your room, just go straight to this alley, you will find it.“ The owner said.

There is a beautiful brick wall at the end of this alley, looks hundreds of years, and through the hole of the wall, my new roommate waves to me.

I walk along the wall, step onto the entrance deck, someone it laying on the deck and reading, enjoy himself with such a nice sunny day.

I unpack my stuff, and bringing my towel down stairs. Having a bath will take away my fatigue during the journey. Other guests is cooking themselves dinner, and they invited me to join them, I told them I will after the bath.

With the beautiful brick wall and a tree, the courtyard is very cozy. My roommate is taking a nap under the tree. I didn’t bother him, went down straight to the bath.

Other guests bought the grocery at Tainan East Market, the traditional market just 5 minutes away by walking. The food was fantastic because of the fresh ingredient.

After the dinner, we watch a movies with the projector in the common area. All the rooms are facilitated with minimum furniture, so everyone enjoy their time at the common area.

The next morning, I studied on the roof top. Its quite nice here, you can have a great view from here. The temple and the traditional Taiwanese houses is just under your feet, and its very quiet here.

02 Hive Hotel Facade Renovation HIVE Hotel is a renovation project located in front of Luodong train station where the downtown area is. Luodong is a historical township attributed to the logging industry. The existing building was built around the 1960s and has expressionism style canopies and facade with the dedicated constructed quality that cannot be duplicated nowadays. The client intends is to transform the old hotel into a destination for young travelers. Our concept is to keep the precious old facade on the side and introduce a new screen facade on the front. The screen needs to represent the modern personality of the hotel, but at the same time stand for the historical character. We choose bricks, the traditional material of the place, but create a contemporary expression to it.

The Brick Set Out Solution To test the construction’s feasibility, we built a mockup wall with 470cm wide and 250cm high in size to test the in and out tolerance and the construction time consumption. In order to set out the curved surface brick wall, we first print out every layer of brick with dimension

Mock-up Wall- Testing the Surface & Bricklayers

annotation for the craftsman. They then set cable as a virtual plane as a reference to set out every brick. Lay-outing the bricks alongside with the set back of the cement mortar took craftsmen way more time than we expected, and the estimated construction time cannot meet the duration of the construction. Inspired by the observation of the set-out process, we found it was the set back of cement mortar that took the craftsman the most time. We then came out an idea of laser cutting a templet for both setting out bricks and the mold of the setback cement mortar.

The Brick Set Out Templet

Every layer of the brick has a unique outline specified by every layer, to achieve the large number of it, the outline is generated by coding from the 3D model.

The City Telescope Room

A Site on the Path We already have a city called Taipei, why do we need a "city" museum? Despite to the museum collection that shows the transformation, history, culture, and wellknown people of the city, I believe wandering in the town without preconception taking no matter good or bad given by the city, is the best way to understand a city. Taipei city Museum aiming to become the extension of the city context, the vision to this museum should be like the complicated context of this charming historic city. Locate in the oldest area of Taipei; the museum is at the center of many featuring spots of the place. One of the feature elements is the traditional townhouse of Di-Hua Street (迪化街). The cluster of the townhouses have apparent linear context and distinguish roof treatment. By inserting a city telescope program to the museum, the museum has become a tunnel or a wormhole for visitors to observe the city.

About the Site This site is in the center of a high-density old town context of Taipei. The small-scaled alley runs into this rectangular site and is rich in the charming, nostalgic living atmosphere of Taipei. The small lanes are the extension of the residing scene, especially the old ones, which are the precious heritage of the city, and the collective memories of the neighborhood. Trying to locate the activities’ path of the community, and linking them with the circulation of the museum is the concept of this project. With this idea, diversities of people, including visitors and residents will be brought to the site, and motivate activities along the paths.

04 Logistic Farm The logistic system is a complicated system that supports the distribution of goods in the city, and it is a city-scaled and adaptable like an organism. The warehouse of the system often set at the edge of the metropolitan to save the expensive rent of inventories in the city center. Before the logistic truck is ready to departure, all the cargo that needs to be sent in one delivery are packed, and the route considering time, traffic and gasoline consumption is settled. Therefore the delivery order and path of a logistic truck indicate a regional boundary of vague information. The border resembles the network, unseen and indiscernible, complicated while accurate and efficient. It is the evidence of the industrial structure and land use, at the same time influence each other within the logistic system. The urban component is a flexible framework that can be changed by various conditions. This project tends to initiate with the network of the logistic system, trying to find out the prototype of the urban component. Taking an urban aquaponic vegetable farm as the phenomenon of the framework setting on the logistic system, this project attempts to transform the urban landscape at XingYi district of Taipei under this logistic era.

Your Neighborhood Refrigerator_7-11 Unlike the traditional market or supermarket, convenient stores don’t have a regular replenishment time. Each logistic truck of convenient store has its assigned service reach and distribution stores. Different 8 cm in Depth products are classified based on different temperature demands, and the timetable of distribution and frequency is decided by the neighborhood of the store, such as school district, commercial district etc. 50 cm Taipei City has the highest density of convenient stores; you can imagine the large scale of the logistic system behind them. In response to all the ever-changing information in urban life, the location, services provided, scale and amount of the convenient store change as well. With the concept of “just around the corner” and “24 a day, 7 days a week”, convenient stores in Taipei have become the “neighborhood refrigerator” in urban life. Double-income families may not have to do the weekly grocery shopping anymore because of the benefit brought from the phenomenon; therefore the neighbor unit has been redefined. Convenient stores spread to every corner of the city. The plant height differs from species. In viewing this, I came out with three categories of height: beneath 30cm, between 30-80cm, 3.66 Facade and above 80cm corresponding to 1 unit, 2 units and 3 units, and use this criterion to fill the framework. The growing bed skips the windows of the building. The farmer (in this project, the clerk) utilizes the height of truck to harvest the crops on the second floor.

Taiwan Architecture Center (TAC) aims to create a center combining the collection of architectural document, exhibition, and educating workshop. TAC provides the opportunity to brainstorm the inspiration, so it is flexible and everchanging. Unlike the authoritative architecture as Grand Hotel, nor the “star” architectures’ fair as Green Expo, the importance of TAC is that it is owned by the people who are using it. This center is not built with immense cost, and it emphasizes the event that is happening here. Comparing to the relatively eternal existence of viaducts, architecture is a highly mutable object. We try to take advantages of the infrastructure as the foundation of the structure of TAC, fixing the remaining space by choosing an adaptable attached structure. It is humble and conforms to the conditions of the site. Different functions of the program such as exhibition, collection, workshops, and the administration have its own patterns of flexibility.

The Story There was a time when people believed that the great architecture saved the city, the arrogance of elitist architecture bringing dead monuments to the city. Take the grand hotel as an example; starting from 1952, the grand hotel has once been the landmark of Taipei city. It is not exaggerating to say that the grand hotel was the product of heroism. However, as soon as the shin-sheng viaduct started operation in 1983, the grand hotel lost its divinity because of the block of view to Keelung river, and the constant heavy traffic sending commuters back and forth daily.

Trolley Museum Re-Thinking Exhibition – The Exhibit Inlaid In The Land We would love to break the conventional way of doing exhibition-the visitors enter the controlled territory and admire the collection or objects within the artificial environment. We propose a new concept-wandering and circling, in which we suggest a new watching experience that is different from the existing one in a large interior space. The new way of watching will happen in an outdoor/ semi-outdoor environment where visitors could as well feel the touch of the landscape.

Trolley Trail Semi-Outdoor Space/ Pavillions

Plaza

Different types of tracks set out from the core area where the fastened facilities are found and then unfolded into the whole site area. Along with these tracks, people find different types of movable exhibition rooms. The movable rooms designate different exhibit. The exhibition locations vary from time, demands, activity arrangements…etc. In the other words, there is no fixed program and official mode in this museum. There are not only the exhibited objects but also the whole span of landscape and city life as a complete package of the exhibition.

The client wanted his resident to fit the neighborhood atmosphere, which is the utilize of red brick, stone tile, and wooden facade. We brought out a proposal, on the street side using multiple materials such as wood, brick, stone, and mud, bringing the privateness. On the other side, the glass wall layers make space total transparent, and the reflection represents the shine of the diamond. View from the entrance
