Competitività fa rima con residenzialità. E il “vivere bene” è un indubbio fattore d’attrazione per il nostro territorio. Siamo di fronte a profonde trasformazioni nel contesto economico come pure nella vita sociale. Trasformazioni spesso indotte da quell’innovazione tecnologica che, come sottolineano gli studiosi dei fenomeni sociali, è da sempre il più formidabile fattore di cambiamento. Talvolta fatichiamo ad assecondare un ritmo del mutamento che sembra più veloce delle nostre stesse capacità di adeguamento. Eppure, Varese ancora una volta sta dimostrando che possiede una grande virtù: sto parlando di quella straordinaria capacità di trasformare il cambiamento in opportunità che caratterizza i suoi operatori economici e le sue imprese fin da quando, alla metà dell’800 proprio qui, lungo l’asse dell’Olona, uomini capaci diedero vita al primo nucleo dell’industria italiana. Adesso questa capacità di adattamento è messa alla prova dalla rivoluzione della telematica. Una delle possibili strade per far vincere, ancora una volta, Varese è allora quella di puntare con decisione sulla qualità ambientale che lo caratterizza. Favoriti da una natura benigna che ci ha dotato di laghi e corsi d’acqua che s’insinuano nel paesaggio prealpino garantendo una bellezza inestimabile al nostro territorio, oggi stiamo valorizzando sempre più l’elemento della residenzialità. “Vivere bene” a Varese si può anche perché, sul piano altrettanto importante dell’accessibilità, c’è una rete di collegamenti molto articolata che conta sulla presenza dell’aeroporto di Malpensa: un’infrastruttura che - nonostante le indubbie difficoltà legate a scelte politiche discutibili - continua a essere una formidabile “porta d’ingresso al mondo” a pochi passi da casa nostra. Che questa sia una terra del “vivere bene” ce lo confermano le storie di uomini e donne provenienti da diverse parti d’Italia o del mondo che, una volta giunti in provincia di Varese, ne hanno individuato delle qualità particolari tali da far decidere loro di non allontanarsi. Di scegliere, insomma, le nostre città o i borghi delle vallate prealpine quali sede dove vivere con una qualità residenziale più alta che altrove. Un’attrazione fatale, i cui caratteri vogliamo illustrarvi nelle pagine che seguono. Sarà piacevole leggere le testimonianze di questi autentici “ambasciatori” del nostro territorio. Persone che, per il “vivere bene”, vogliono Varese. E sono orgogliosi di dirlo a tutti!

Competitiveness should rhyme with residency. And the "good life", in fact, is certainly one of our land's most attractive aspects. Our area's economic context and social life are certainly undergoing significant changes. And, as highlighted by scholars, these changes are often induced by technological innovations, which have always been the most powerful driving force behind social change. We sometimes struggle with the way changes seem to take place more quickly than we are able to adapt to them. And yet the province of Varese has once again proven itself to possess an important virtue, or rather the incredible ability to transform change into opportunity: an ability that dates back to the 1800s, when capable men along the banks of the Olona river gave life to the first Italian industries. This adaptability is now being challenged by the revolution of telematics. One of the possible ways to ensure Varese's success, therefore, is to focus upon the quality of its environment. With splendid lakes and magnificent streams flowing through the Alpine foothills, our territory offers unrivalled beauty, and this has allowed us to begin exalting the residential living possibilities.

The "good life" in Varese is also owed to the territory's ease of accessibility, with an intricate network of connections that even boasts the presence of Milan's Malpensa airport just around the corner: an infrastructure which, despite the difficulties that have arisen due to questionable political choices, remains a formidable "gateway to the world". The "good life" offered by this territory is evidenced by numerous stories of men and women from both Italy and abroad who, after discovering the particular features of the province of Varese, have decided to make this land their permanent home. In short, people choose to live in our cities, as well as the up-scale towns and the villages in the pre-alpine valleys, because they appreciate the higher quality of residential living that these areas offer as opposed to elsewhere. It's the story of a sort of fatal attraction, the protagonists of which are illustrated in the pages to come. We hope that you'll enjoy reading the testimonials of these true "ambassadors" to our territory. People who have discovered the "good life" in Varese and its surrounding province. Vivere soltanto o “vivere bene”? di Andrea Ciotti*

«...Nel Nord Italia, a poche decine di chilometri dal confine svizzero, coordinate GPS 45°49’18”, esistono luoghi meravigliosi, adagiati su un’orografia collinare, caratterizzati da parchi e giardini, compresi dal 1927 nella provincia di Varese... Un territorio del buon vivere, immerso nel verde, con numerosi laghi, colline che arrivano al confine elvetico, sullo sfondo la catena del Monte Rosa che dipinge il territorio piemontese, poco distanti le attraenti metropoli di Lugano e Milano, a qualche ora di auto la Liguria con il suo bel mare. Nelle sue città numerose famiglie hanno insediato le loro attività produttive e industriali e parallelamente hanno edificato le loro dimore, belle, decorate in stile, sfarzose, segno evidente di una borghesia illuminata, ingegnosa, attenta e perennemente concentrata sul fare». ...suona la sveglia, sono le sette del mattino e la mia sceneggiatura s’interrompe. In questa pubblicazione si traccia un focus importante sulla residenzialità nel territorio varesino; tutto sommato la mia sceneggiatura non era poi così casuale. Vogliamo comprendere quali siano le ragioni che spingono numerose famiglie a stabilire la loro vita nei luoghi del territorio varesino. Un’area ricca di case bellissime, di epoca Liberty, moderne e contemporanee, ognuna con la propria storia caratterizzata da spazi e soprattutto persone.

Quell’epoca grandiosa che rivive nell’oggi Il territorio varesino ha vissuto una stagione “grandiosa” nei primi decenni del Novecento con la costruzione di numerose strutture dedicate alla ricettività e al turismo e, negli anni successivi, molte famiglie varesine e milanesi hanno contribuito a rinsaldare la reputazione della nostra provincia a livello internazionale insediando numerose fabbriche affiancate a case chiaramente borghesi. Questo è stato il vero fenomeno catalizzatore, un territorio dalle forti valenze paesistico ambientali in cui era bello vivere, lavorare, ma soprattutto a pochi passi dai centri nevralgici del business e della cultura. E oggi che succede? Molti di voi giustamente diranno: «Ma in fondo il territorio varesino non si è spostato... che differenza c’è rispetto alla gloriosa stagione d’oro varesina degli anni Venti/Trenta e Cinquanta/Sessanta del Novecento?». Apparentemente sembra tutto identico al recente passato, ma l’avvento delle nuove tecnologie, le modalità low cost di viaggio, unite a una radicale revisione delle attività produttive, ci costringono a un doveroso ripensamento della mission territoriale e, di riflesso, del concetto di residenzialità. Varese come “nodo” È necessario iniziare a pensare a una Varese non più territorio “capolinea”, bensì a una Varese “nodo”, punto notevole di una rete infrastrutturale di livello europeo che collega Zurigo a Milano e Parigi a Venezia. E Varese è proprio qui, dove scorrono due assi di collegamento fondamentali a livello continentali quali il Sempione e il Gottardo. A fronte dei sopra citati fenomeni di mutamento antropologico e sociologico, è in atto una forte virata di pensiero e di progettualità legata al tema dell’housing. Trasformazioni culturali di rilievo che si stanno radicando nella nostra provincia. E allora, come valorizzare le numerose residenze di epoca Liberty e le bellissime ville borghesi arroccate nei punti notevoli del nostro territorio? Oggigiorno l’abitare dovrebbe seguire i nostri stili di vita: tutto sembra essere più fluido, tutto

viene costantemente messo in discussione, tutto viene mescolato in ricette inusuali, flessibili, agilmente modificabili all’occorrenza. Viviamo il movimento! Siamo tutti in movimento, tutto è in movimento, vogliamo movimento! Le nostre case non sono più per “sempre”, viviamo un’epoca all’insegna della temporaneità, dello spostamento. E allora nel mondo le residenze si trasformano spesso in scenografie del contemporaneo, dei gusti del momento, abitiamo case ufficio e uffici con spazi destinati al buon vivere. Le fabbriche e i laboratori artigianali dismessi si trasformano in loft, in atelier per gli artisti, in headquarter di rappresentanza, in centri per la creatività, in show room vibranti e luccicanti, in musei, in auditorium, in centri per la cultura, in ristoranti, bistrot... Si abitano i vecchi bacini in cemento armato destinati alla raccolta dell’acqua, le chiese sconsacrate, si vive nelle ciminiere in mattoni delle obsolete industrie siderurgiche, si costruiscono case in legno nei boschi, in riva ai laghi e ai fiumi. L’abitare è intriso di design, dalle più recenti produzioni industriali all’artigianato acquistato appositamente in un viaggio toccata e fuga al mercato del vintage della domenica a Stoccolma. Il tessile è ambientato a stretto contatto con mirabolanti texture tridimensionali di pietra, metallo, vetro e legno ottenute grazie alle più innovative tecnologie robotizzate. Rimettere in gioco le esclusività Suggerisco però un grande sforzo comune, un cambio repentino di mentalità: i confini si sono allargati, anzi sono quasi estinti, dobbiamo guardare al mondo, siamo cittadini del mondo, ci confrontiamo quotidianamente in real time con i cinque continenti, e sempre di più lo faremo con i pianeti presenti nello spazio. Dobbiamo guardare al futuro, proiettare i nostri sguardi in avanti, anche e soprattutto salvaguardando i valori veri del nostro territorio, quelli paesistico ambientali, rendendoli più contemporanei, maggiormente attrattivi, appetibili e apprezzabili. La frase chiave allora è «...sono orgoglioso di vivere a Varese perché... e in futuro vorrei...». vorrei...» Innestiamo il layer “contemporaneità”, continuiamo il processo di stratificazione storica aggiornando i contenuti e gli obiettivi. Rimettiamo in gioco, insomma, le nostre esclusività!

«...In Northern Italy, at just a few dozen kilometres from the Swiss border, at the GPS coordinates 45°49'18'', magnificent places can be found nestled among the hilltops, with splendid parks and gardens, all of which have been reunited in the province of Varese since 1927... A land immersed in greenery where the good life reigns, with numerous lakes, hills extending all the way to the Swiss border, the peaks of the Monte Rosa massif looming over Piedmont in the background, with the bustling urban centres of Lugano and Milan just around the corner, and Liguria's magnificent seaside within easy driving distance. Many industrious families have established their businesses in the local towns, likewise building their magnificent lavish homes, which can be seen as symbols of an enlightened bourgeoisie, ever-aware and dedicated to getting things done...». ...the alarm clock sounds, it's seven o'clock in the morning and the scene is interrupted. This publication will be focused upon the important issue of residency in the Varese area. All things considered, the screenplay running through my head was by no means random. Our aim is to gain a fuller understanding of the reasons for which so many families have chosen to settle in the territory of Varese. The area is abounding with splendid homes,

both Art Nouveaux style and modern, each with its own history in terms of space and, above all, individuals. The grandiose era that lives on to this day The Varese area enjoyed a “grandiose” era during the first decades of the twentieth century with the establishment of numerous hospitality and tourism structures. In later years, many families from Varese and Milan helped to consolidate our province's reputation on an international scale by constructing a large number of factories alongside their bourgeois homes. This was the phenomenon that served as the true catalyst, resulting in an excellent living and working environment immersed within a splendid natural landscape, with bustling business and cultural centres just around the corner. So what's the situation now? Many would rightly say, «when it comes down to it, the Varese area hasn't moved..... so what's changed with respect to the glorious golden era that Varese enjoyed during various decades of the twentieth century?». While nothing would appear to have changed with respect to the recent past, the advent of new technologies and low cost means of travel, combined with a radical overhaul of the local production activities, have forced us to re-evaluate the territory's mission and, consequently, the concept of residency as well.

Just living, or living the "good life"?

Varese as a "node" We must stop thinking of the territory of Varese as “point of departure”, and begin thinking of it as a “node”, an extremely important point within a European-wide infrastructure that connects Zurich to Milan, and Paris to Venice. And Varese is right there, situated alongside two transit routes that are essential to continental trade: the Simplon and the Gotthard. In light of the previously mentioned phenomena of anthropological and sociological change, significant changes are also taking place in terms of housing. Important cultural transformations are taking root within our province. So what do we make of the numerous Art Nouveau style homes and magnificent bourgeois villas perched atop some of the most prominent points throughout our territory? Nowadays, our ways of life should match our lifestyles: everything seems to be more fluid, everything is constantly questioned, everything is mixed according to unusual and flexible recipes that can be easily modified, if necessary. Let's live in the movement! We are all in movement... everything is in movement... we seek out movement! Our homes are no longer “forever”... we are constantly on the move, living in an era in

which that which is temporary prevails. And in this world, therefore, our homes are often transformed into scenes of modern living, featuring the trends of the times: we live in office homes and office buildings designed for the good life. The abandoned factories and workshops are being transformed into lofts, art studios, representative headquarters, centres of creativity, vibrant show rooms, museums, auditoriums, cultural centres, restaurants and bistros... People are setting up their homes in deconsecrated churches and old water collection facilities made of reinforced concrete... they're living in the brick chimneys of obsolete steel factories, building wooden houses in the forests and along the banks of rivers and lakes. Our manner of living is steeped in design, from the most recent industrial products to various artisan crafts, perhaps purchased on a Sunday trip to the vintage market in Stockholm. The textile industry is delving into the incredible new threedimensional textures of stone, metal, glass and wood, obtained via innovative robotic technologies.

expanded to the point that they are almost non-existent, and we need to take a step back and look at the world from afar. We are citizens of the world, dealing with the affairs of the five continents on a daily basis in real time, with other planets on our notso-distant horizons. We must look ahead to the future while at the same time safeguarding the true values of our territory, or rather those which are linked to the landscape and the environment, modernizing them, rending them more attractive, appealing and appreciable. That which we must say to ourselves, therefore, is: «...I am proud to live in Varese because..., and in the future I would like...». Let's apply a layer of “modernity”, continuing the process of historical stratification while at the same time updating the content and the objectives. In short, let's bring our exclusivity back into play!

Bringing exclusivity back into play I would suggest, however, that we make an enormous common effort, a sudden change of mentality, if you will: the boundaries have

Varese non finisce mai di Matteo Inzaghi*

Mi piace stare per conto mio. Adoro passeggiare in mezzo alla gente. Mi piace il lago, amo la montagna. Mi piace visitare chiese, monumenti e antiche fortezze. Trovo emozionante perdermi in panorami senza tempo, dove l’uomo è piccolo e la Natura è (il) Tutto. No, non preoccupatevi. Non sono impazzito. Nessuno sdoppiamento di personalità, nessuna schizofrenia, nessuna crisi di identità. Solo un comune, e piuttosto pigro, senso della vita. Quello che riesce a dirsi appagato solo quando riscopre l’umano stupore, l’insostituibile incanto davanti alla bellezza. Varese è un po’ così. Insospettabilmente varia, eterogenea, sorprendente. La conosco da sempre. La riscopro ogni giorno. Il suo territorio è vasto, ma talmente diversificato da contenere mille scenari, mille orizzonti, mille sensazioni. Volete un consiglio? Risparmiate tempo. Trovatevi un salvadanaio o un cassetto sicuro in cui custodire ore, minuti e secondi. Perché sono quelle le vere ricchezze che quest’epoca folle ci ha portato via. E se poi voleste spendere tutto in una volta. Ho qui pronto un programma per voi. Attenti, però. Ci vuole entusiasmo. Ci vuole curiosità. Ci vuole amore. E ci vogliono scarpe comode. Pronti? Partiamo. Prima di tutto, se avete un po’ di fiato, godetevi il cammino delle Cappelle. Affacciatevi dalla terrazza del Mosè, affondate i piedi nella prima neve del Campo dei Fiori. E poi, senza pensarci due volte, tornate a bassa quota. Un salto a Sant’Ambrogio, due passi a Villa Toepltiz. Una deviazione a Biumo, un tuffo nei giardini di Ville Ponti e una scorpacciata di arte a Villa Panza. Poi il ritorno verso il centro, dove batte il cuore verde di Varese. Dove l’esplosivo splendore dei Giardini Estensi sfida il fascino discreto di cortili nascosti. Dove bar ed erboristerie, altrove anonimi, qui serbano profumi e aneddoti di vite lontane. Non siete ancora stanchi? Allora precipitatevi alla Schiranna, che atleti di ogni provenienza hanno eletto capitale del canottaggio. E poi avanti tutta, dribblando i gioielli alati del Volo a Vela, sfiorando le sofisticate geometrie del Chiostro di Voltorre, salutando a distanza la vetta di Orino e le cascate di Cittiglio, fino ad approdare sulle sponde signorili del silenzioso Verbano. Destinazione, Santa Caterina del Sasso. Tornati sulla terra ferma, percorrete la strada che collega Laveno a Luino. Fermatevi a Castelveccana, scendete a Caldè. Guardate la superficie dell’acqua: vi troverete riflessi spicchi di cielo e cime spettinate dal vento. E se la vostra energia non avrà ancora acceso la spia della riserva, puntate di nuovo in alto: verso i Mulini di Piero e, da lì, a Monteviasco, per una scorpacciata di delizie adagiate sul soffice cuscino delle valli alberate. A questo punto, vi direte, ho visto tutto. Non ho altro da chiedere. Non ho più desideri da esprimere. Peccato, vi risponderà qualcuno. Perché la provincia di Varese è lì che vi aspetta: ha tante altre storie da raccontare, centinaia di pagine ancora da sfogliare. Varese never ends

I like being on my own. I love walking among people. I like the lake, I love the mountain. I like visiting churches, monuments and ancient fortresses. I find it exciting to get lost in timeless landscapes, where man is insignificant and Nature dominates Everything. Don't worry about me. I'm not crazy. There's no split personality, no schizophrenia, no identity crisis. Just a commonplace and rather lazy conception of life. One which is only capable of feeling satisfied upon rediscovering the wonders of humanity, the boundless enchantment of beauty. Varese is a bit like that. Surprisingly varied, diverse and unpredictable. I've known it all my life. I rediscover it every day. Its territory is vast, but diverse enough to contain a thousand different scenarios... a thousand horizons... a thousand sensations. Want some advice? It'll save you time. Find a piggy bank or a safe drawer to store away the hours... the minutes... and the

Panza. Then return to the town centre, where the green heart of Varese continues to beat. Where the explosive brilliance of the Estensi Gardens rival the discreet charm of the hidden courtyards. Where the bars and herbalists, elsewhere anonymous, here exude exotic fragrances, telling tales of faroff lands. Not tired yet? Then head down to the Schiranna, which has been nominated the capital of rowing by athletes of various origins. And from there it's full speed ahead, weaving through the winged marvels of the gliding district, skimming through the refined geometries of the Cloister of Voltorre, hailing from afar the summit of Orino and the waterfalls of Cittiglio, ultimately making landfall on the stately banks of Lake Maggiore itself. Our Destination? Santa Caterina del Sasso. Having returned to the mainland, you follow the road that leads from Laveno to Luino. Stopping in Castelveccana, you get off in CaldĂ¨. The surface of the water reflects the sky and the

seconds. Because those are the true riches that these crazy times have taken away from us. And then, if you want to spend it all at once... I've got the perfect plan for you. Be careful, though. It takes enthusiasm. It takes curiosity. It takes love. And you'll need comfortable shoes. Ready? Let's go. First of all, if you think you can handle it, enjoy the walk up to the Chapels. Enjoy the view from the terrazza del MosĂŠ, walk barefoot through the first snowfall in the Campo dei Fiori. And then, without hesitation, go back down. Check out Sant'Ambrogio and take a stroll through Villa Toepltiz. Visit Biumo, wander through the gardens of Villa Ponti and marvel at the artworks in Villa

mountain peaks, dishevelled by the wind. And if the warning light of your energy reserves has not yet turned on, look further above: towards the Windmills of Piero and, from there, towards Monteviasco, where a feast of delights lies atop the soft cushion of the wooded valley floors. At this point, you might say to yourself, I've seen it all. There's nothing more I could ask. There's nothing more I could wish for. That's too bad, someone might reply. Because the entire province of Varese is right there at your fingertips, with many more stories to tell, and hundreds of pages yet to explore. And you, my friends, have not even seen the least of it!

Tiziano Sclavi, il papà di Dylan Dog vive nel verde di Mario Chiodetti

Abita a Pianbosco, una località di Venegono Superiore immersa completamente nel verde. Prima di approdare quasi per gioco in provincia di Varese, Tiziano Sclavi, l'autore del fumetto Dylan Dog, ha vissuto per vent’anni a Milano. «Mia moglie e io abbiamo pensato di prenderci una casa in campagna per i weekend e le vacanze - racconta l'autore - Arrivati per caso a Pianbosco, ci siamo innamorati del posto, dove ci siamo trasferiti definitivamente nel 2000». 2000». Il grande giardino circondato dal bosco ha permesso alla famiglia Sclavi di non escludere dalla loro quotidianità il contatto con gli animali, attualmente hanno sette cani e due gatti che convivono tra loro pacificamente: «Ci hanno insegnato molte cose: ora tutte le nostre risorse, per quanto possiamo, sono dedicate alla beneficenza per gli animali. A Milano forse non sarebbe mai successo». L'aspetto che Sclavi ama di più della sua scelta è la sensazione di isolarsi dal mondo e allo stesso tempo, grazie a internet, avere tutto ciò che si desidera. Una doppia e per niente contraddittoria condizione di connessione-disconessione che lo aiuta a gustarsi la pace della natura senza dover rinunciare al rumore di sottofondo che proviene dal mondo, spesso fonte di ispirazione per i creativi. E anche se oggi il papà di Dylan Dog è in pensione, il successo della sua creatura, che è arrivata a vendere anche un milione di copie a numero, forse risiede in questa rara e caparbia capacità di vivere nella contemporaneità senza sacrificare la qualità della vita. Un equilibrio che la scelta di Pianbosco, oasi straordinaria in un crocevia molto trafficato che collega le province di Varese, Como e Milano, ha in qualche modo favorito e continua a favorire: «Qui c'è la condizione ideale per godermi la pace e la tranquillità della natura, quindi non cambierei niente di questo luogo, e spero che non cambierà mai niente. Del resto Pianbosco fa parte del Parco Pineta, una zona superprotetta: mi auguro che non sarà mai invasa dal cemento e dalla confusione».

Perché la Manchester d'Italia e non la “fashion” Milano? «Perché sono per la concretezza - dice il figlio Gianluigi Cimmino - e quindi lontano da un certo fashion system». All'ombra della basilica di San Giovanni Battista hanno sfidato (e battuto) i cinesi nel tessile: una partita che molte industrie italiane hanno perso. Loro l'hanno stravinta. Non solo: il legame con la provincia di Varese è ben andato oltre. È grazie anche alla famiglia Cimmino se a Busto Arsizio si è vinto l'ultimo scudetto pesante in uno sport di squadra, quello della pallavolo femminile. È il 2012 e quell'alloro viene impreziosito da 2 coppe Cev, una Coppa Italia e una Supercoppa italiana. Non basta, perché i Cimmino realizzano anche i costumi più “veloci” al mondo, vestendo anche Federica Pellegrini. Un successo dietro l'altro, confezionato nella “boutique dei trionfi” di Busto Arsizio.

«Il legame con Varese è antico, la mia famiglia era proprietaria di villa Mirabello, la casa dei nonni materni, così negli anni della guerra ho abitato lì e dal 1948 anche frequentato le scuole in città fino al liceo, il Cairoli. Perciò mi è difficile raccontare il perché del vivere a Varese, è la mia casa, anche perché mamma, vedova di guerra - mio padre Alberto cadde a Isbuscenskij, nell’ultima carica del Savoia Cavalleria - sposò in seconde nozze Carlo Mozzoni, fratello dell’architetto Guglielmo e proprietario della villa di Biumo Superiore dove oggi vivo». Il marchese “Gibì” Litta Modignani fa la spola tra Milano, dove ha abitato tra gli anni ’60 e ’70 e mantiene una “base”, e il colle di Biumo, alla magnifica dimora che vede ancora ospite, soprattutto in estate, Guglielmo Mozzoni, oggi novantottenne, ex partigiano e architetto dalle utopistiche accensioni. «A Varese ho molti amici, alcuni dei tempi del liceo, da ragazzo montavo a cavallo assieme al sindaco Attilio Fontana, e i cavalli ancora mi legano al Varesotto, perché tengo i miei, Socrepes e Cassinari, al centro ippico di Vergiate, la sede della Società milanese per la caccia a cavallo. Lì vicino sono rimasti piccoli paradisi, come i boschi del Vigano, da Sesona a Golasecca, in cui il sottobosco è di muschio molto compatto e alto, una meraviglia per i cavalli, che passeggiano come su un tappeto», tappeto», spiega “Gibì” Litta Modignani. Che di Varese ama la tranquillità e gli splendidi dintorni: «sarebbe ancor più bello con una vera stagione operistica. Abbiamo poi luoghi bellissimi, come il Sacro Monte o Castiglione Olona, che meritano un’attenzione ancor maggiore da parte dei tour operator internazionali. Certo anche Biumo è cambiata chiude con una nota melanconica - una volta c’erano i Panza, i Veratti con cui trovarsi e passare l’estate, ognuno aveva ospiti in villa e c’era molta più animazione» animazione»..

«I have many friends in Varese, some dating back to my high school years. As a child, I rode on horseback alongside the mayor Attilio Fontana, and my ties to Varese are maintained to this day by my horses, Socrepes and Cassinari, who I keep at the equestrian centre in Vergiate, the headquarters of Milan's horseback hunting association. Nearby, little corners of heaven have remained, like the forests of Vigano, from Sesona to Golasecca, where the mossy undergrowth is thick and compacted like a carpet, offering an exceptional terrain for horseback riding», explains "Gibì" Litta Modignani. That which he loves most about Varese is its serenity and the beautiful surroundings: «All that's missing is a true opera season. There are so many magnificent destinations, like Sacro Monte and Castiglione Olona, which should be promoted to a greater extent by the international tour operators. Renato Pozzetto, ragazzo di campagna, ti piace più Varese o la metropoli? di Adriana Morlacchi

«Varese è un posto fortunato». Sarà anche un comico, ma questa volta è serio, anzi serissimo, Renato Pozzetto, che a Laveno-Mombello è proprietario di un’abitazione e della Locanda Montecristo. Proprio quella dove lavora il cuoco piemontese Massimo Torrengo, vincitore del premio “Chef d’Autore 2013”. La famiglia di Pozzetto è arrivata sul Lago Maggiore durante la guerra, dopo che Milano era stata bombardata. A Laveno, Pozzetto ha vissuto fino a sei anni, poi è tornato nella metropoli. Ma ha continuato a trascorrere le vacanze estive sul Lago Maggiore, dove ha conosciuto Cochi Ponzoni, anche lui sfollato da Milano a Gemonio. Entrambi hanno costruito la loro carriera artistica a Milano, partendo dal Derby come tanti cabarettisti di quegli anni. Il duo Cochi e Renato è diventato una leggenda. E a Varese - si direbbero Severino e Artemio, protagonisti del film “Il ragazzo di campagna” - è come essere in città? «Per me Varese è un luogo di relax - risponde Pozzetto -. Conosco il Lago Maggiore come le mie tasche. L’altro giorno sono stato mezz’ora in barca e sono stato felice come un bambino. Mi piace andare in mezzo al lago, sentire le voci diventare lontane, fino al momento in cui mi circonda un silenzio enorme. Chi è del lago mi capisce». Il lago, in effetti, crea dipendenza: «Tutte le volte che posso vengo a Laveno - continua l’artista -. Le persone che abitano lì, all’ombra delle Alpi, possono avere un contatto speciale con la natura. L’arrivo del maltempo si intuisce dal colore dell’acqua del lago. Gli stranieri ne rimangono abbagliati». E la locanda? «Sono molto affezionato a quel locale, ma non sono io a dirigerlo - puntualizza Pozzetto -. So che è pieno di gente e che si mangia bene. Ma non è lì che ho preso ispirazione per la mia arte. Noi cabarettisti siamo figli di Milano, del Sessantotto, dei momenti difficili che cantavano Jannacci e Gaber. Abbiamo vissuto anni pieni di fermento. Poi mi piacciono i laghi e i tramonti, le montagne e il vento. Anche se la carriera me la sono giocata a Milano, sono innamorato del Lago Maggiore».

The Pozzetto family came to the Lake Maggiore area during the war, following the bombing of Milan. After living in Laveno for a number of years, Pozzetto returned to the city when he was six years old. But he continued to spend his summer holidays on Lake Maggiore, where he met Coco Ponzoni, who had also left Milan to settle in Gemonio. Both men built their careers in Milan, starting out at the Derby, as many comedians did in those days. The duo of Cochi and Renato has since become a legend. So as the protagonists of the film Ragazzo di Campagna ("Country Boy"), Severino and Artemio, might say, is Varese like being in the city? «For me, Varese is a relaxing place», Pozzetto replies. «I know Lake Maggiore like the back of my hand. The other day I was out in my boat for a half an hour, and I was happy as a clam. I like going out on the lake, listening to the voices as they grow more distant, until I'm eventually surrounded by an immense silence. Those who are from the lake area will understand what I mean». The lake, in fact, creates a kind of addiction: «I come to Laveno whenever I get the chance", the artist continues. "The people who live there, in the shadow of the Alps, have a special form of contact with nature. You can predict the arrival of bad weather based on the colour of the lake's water. Foreigners are really impressed by this». And the Inn? «I'm really fond of that place, but I don't manage it», Pozzetto explains. «I hear that it's always full of people and that the food is great. But that's not where I get the inspiration for my art. We comedians from the class of '68 are bound to Milan and the hard times that Jannacci and Gaber sang about. We lived through troubled times. Sono passati sedici anni dal giorno in cui l’olandese Johan Bode scelse di vivere con la famiglia a Varese, dopo una parentesi comasca. Bode, che di professione è partner della società di consulenza Kpmg, dice che quella decisione venne presa per i figli che allora frequentavano la Scuola Europea. «All’epoca io facevo avanti e indietro da Voghera, dove lavoravo. Era un sacrificio compensato dall’aria pulita, dall’ambiente, dal verde e dall’atmosfera particolare che si respira in questa città, più piacevole rispetto a Como». Secondo Bose, all’inizio non è facile per uno straniero fare breccia nel cuore dei varesini per un motivo molto semplice: le esperienze fatte negli anni con gli stranieri del Ccr di Ispra, della Philips prima e della Whirlpool dopo, in qualche modo giustificano questa diffidenza: «Gli stranieri arrivavano e dopo poco se ne andavano via, quindi perché mai i varesini avrebbero dovuto investire affettivamente su di loro?». La fortuna di Bode, che è piuttosto alto, è avere incontrato sulla sua strada la squadra di basket del gruppo sportivo Montello dove ha militato per molti anni: «All’inizio mi hanno preso un po’ per i fondelli, ma poi sono nate vere e proprie amicizie. Ho conosciuto il mitico Bob Morse, siamo diventati amici e ogni volta che torna a Varese viene a trovarmi. Non è da tutti girare per la città con un’autentica leggenda della pallacanestro». Bode giudica buoni i servizi offerti dall’amministrazione comunale, mentre critica la mobilità e il traffico diventato caotico e asfissiante, dove le automobili hanno il sopravvento su tutto il resto, pedoni compresi. Lui alla bicicletta preferisce il motorino, ma si ritiene fortunato perché, abitando a soli dieci minuti dal cuore della città, può muoversi facilmente a piedi: «Ho una casa con un giardino di mille metri quadrati a due passi dal centro, un particolare non molto frequente in Europa. A 59 anni e molto vicino alla pensione il mio nuovo futuro lo immagino sempre a Varese».

Johan Bode makes his way, thanks (also) to Bob Morse Sixteen years have passed since the Dutchman Johan Bode first decided to bring his family to the Varese area, following a brief stint in Como. As a partner with the consulting firm KPMG by profession, Bode explains that he made this decision for his children, who at the time were attending the European School. «Back then I was commuting back and forth from Voghera, where I worked. It was a sacrifice that was compensated by the clean air, the environment, the greenery and the special atmosphere that one feels upon entering this city, which is much more pleasant than that of Como». According to Bose, it's rather difficult for a foreigner to make his way into the hearts of the citizens of Varese for one simple reason, and his experiences over the years working with the foreigners of the CCR in Ispra, and later for Phlips and Whirpool, have confirmed this time and again: «The foreigners leave almost as quickly as they arrive... so why on earth should the people of Varese become attached to them?» Bode's rather good fortune, however, lay in the fact that he happened to cross paths with the basketball team of the Montello sports club, where he served for many years: «At first I was taken for a bit of a ride, but I later established some true friendships. When I met the legendary Bob Morse, we soon became friends, and he comes to visit me whenever he's in the Varese area. Not everyone gets the chance to hang out with an authentic basketball legend». While Bode is happy with the services offered by the municipality, he is critical of the chaotic viability and the overwhelming traffic, in which cars seem to have the right of way over everything else, including pedestrians. He prefers to ride a scooter rather than a bicycle, but considers himself lucky since he only lives ten minutes from the heart of the city and can easily get around on foot: «I have a house with a one thousand square metre yard within walking distance of the city centre... that's not very common in Europe. At 59 years of age and approaching retirement, I have no plans to leave Varese in the near future».

Giorgio Lotti, Varese per fotografare con amore Viveva a Milano Giorgio Lotti, autore di quel ritratto del primo ministro cinese Ciu En Lai che è considerata una delle foto più diffuse di sempre con 90 milioni di esemplari. Poi ha incontrato Laura e la sua vita è cambiata. Varese è stata lo scenario di questa trasformazione: «Originariamente abitavo a Porta Ticinese - racconta il fotografo -. Lavoravo per Epoca e Panorama come inviato ed ero sempre in giro per il mondo. Pensavo che traslocare a Varese mi avrebbe messo in difficoltà. E all’inizio è stato così, perché ho dovuto fare il pendolare. Ogni giorno fino alla Mondadori e ritorno. Poi pian piano ho conosciuto Varese, ho imparato a leggerne il territorio. E adesso non tornerei mai più indietro». Come mai? «Varese è una città a misura d’uomo, dove i rapporti umani sono “stretti” - spiega Lotti -. Quanto esci di casa sai che ti capiterà di fare due chiacchiere con qualcuno, magari anche con il sindaco. A Milano, dopo cinque anni che vivevo nella stessa palazzina, ho deciso di suonare il campanello al mio vicino di casa per presentarmi. Se non lo avessi fatto, non ci saremmo mai salutati». Lotti vanta un archivio di un milione e mezzo di fotografie, tutte scattate trovandosi al posto giusto al momento giusto. Questo per dire che il luogo dove ci si trova è importante e che la vita di provincia può apparire noiosa per chi è abituato ai ritmi frenetici della metropoli. E così capita che amici giornalisti gli chiedano: «…e così adesso non vai più a teatro?». Domanda a cui Lotti risponde così: «Se ho voglia prendo la macchina e vado a Milano. Non vedo dove sia il problema. Detto questo, anche a Varese, a teatro, ci sono cose interessanti e la programmazione è di buona qualità». «Varese mi piace per il verde, così tanto non ne avevo mai visto in vita mia - continua il fotografo -. Ci sono alberi e giardini da tutte le parti. Poi c’è il Lago di Varese. Mi ci sono appostato molti giorni con la mia macchina fotografica, dalle sette del mattino alle undici di sera. Ho osservato la natura e i colori. Forse un giorno riuscirò a fare un libro con quegli scatti. A Varese abbiamo i laghi, le montagne, il Sacro Monte, i paesaggi. Certe volte la città vuole pensare un po’ troppo in grande e si ritrova invece a fare cose modeste, ma qui rispetto a Milano è un altro modo di vivere».

Giorgio Lotti and his love for photographing Varese Giorgio Lotti, the renowned photographer of one of the most famous photographs of all time depicting Chinese Prime Minister Chou En Lai, with 90 million copies distributed, once lived in Milan. His life changed, however, when he met Laura. This transformation took place in Varese: "I originally lived in Porta Ticinese", the photographer explains. «I worked as a correspondent for Epoca and Panorama, and I was always travelling around the world. I thought that moving to Varese would have been difficult. And it was initially, because I had to commute. All the way to Mondadori and back, every day. Then I gradually got to know Varese, and I learned to appreciate the area. I would never go back now». Why is that? «Varese is a man-sized city, where people develop "close" relationships», Lotti explains «When you leave the house, you know you'll probably end up stopping to chat with someone, perhaps even with the mayor. In Milan, after living in the same building for five years, I finally decided to ring my neighbour's doorbell to introduce myself. If I hadn't done that, we never would have met». Lotti boasts a personal archive of 1.5 million photographs, all taken precisely in the right place at the right time. That is to say that the place where you live is important, and provincial life may seem boring for those who are more accustomed to the pace of the big city. In fact, his journalist friends will sometimes ask him: «... so you never go to the theatre anymore?" To which Lotti usually replies: "If I want to, I just jump in my car and go to Milan. I don't see what the problem is. That being said, the theatre in Varese also offers interesting and goodquality programmes». «I like Varese for the greenery, I've never seen so much in my life», the photographer continues, «Everywhere you look, there are trees and gardens. And then there's the lake. I've spent many days down there with my camera, from seven in the morning until eleven at night. Watching the natural surroundings and the colours. Perhaps one day I'll even be able to publish a book containing all those shots. The Varese area is home to lakes, mountains, forests, Sacro Monte... there are so many marvellous landscapes. In the city, things tend to get a little too big sometimes, and you end up finding yourself doing things on a smaller scale... but compared to Milan, this is an entirely different way of life».

Then, when our children began leaving the nest, some heading to Milan and others abroad, we decided to move here permanently, leaving the house in Milan to one of our daughters», explains Annacarla Bassetti. «As I continue to make the commute between the tailor's shop in Piazza del Carmine and Azzate, I always find myself so happy to return to this countryside, enjoying the magnificent view of Monte Rosa reflecting on the lake, and the close contact with nature. My husband Alessio succeeded in the difficult task of restoring the vineyard to its former glory, and our cellars are now home to an exceptional quality wine».

Alla morte di mamma abbiamo preso in carico la proprietà recuperando l’antico vigneto. Poi quando i figli hanno iniziato a volare via dal nido, gli uni all’estero, gli altri a Milano, abbiamo scelto di risiedere qui, lasciando la casa di Milano a una delle figlie - spiega Annacarla Bassetti - Continuando a fare la pendolare tra la sartoria di piazza del Carmine e Azzate, provo un piacere indicibile nel ritrovare questo paesaggio di campagna, godendo della splendida vista sul Monte Rosa che si riflette sul Lago di Varese, a pieno contatto con la natura. È il personaggio famoso che, negli ultimi anni, è maggiormente identificato con il Varesotto. Max Laudadio non è infatti soltanto un volto televisivo che ha scelto le colline prealpine per vivere meglio. Qui ha portato avanti una serie di iniziative, soprattutto legate alla tutela dell'ambiente, che stanno avendo successo. Tutto è iniziato con “l'incontro” con l'Alpe Tedesco, a Cuasso al Monte: «Sono originario della provincia di Pistoia - racconta l'inviato di Striscia la Notizia - e dopo vent'anni di vita a Milano non ce la facevo più. Quindi, con mia moglie e mia figlia, abbiamo cercato una sistemazione in una città di medie dimensioni. Poi casualmente ci è stata proposta una casa in mezzo al bosco, sotto il Monte Poncione. Un cambiamento estremo. Ci abbiamo provato: prima ci passavamo i weekend, poi ci andavamo dal venerdì mattina e infine anche il giovedì e il lunedì. Alla fine ci siamo detti «Proviamo a vivere qua». Ora non lo cambieremmo con nessun altro posto al mondo». Quello coi faggi e i castagni della Valceresio è amore vero. Ma la simbiosi non si è creata soltanto con la natura: «Qui ho riscoperto l'amore per i rapporti con le persone. Mi piace parlare con la gente e Cuasso è una realtà molto vicina a questa mia esigenza. Se poi voglio andare a teatro, al cinema o in un locale, Varese è abbastanza vicina e si può girare senza subire il caos di una metropoli». L'affetto dell'inviato di Striscia per il Varesotto è andato ben oltre le parole. Con il suo impegno e quello dell'associazione ON, fondata nel 2010, Max Laudadio ha contribuito in modo determinante alla costituzione del Parco delle Cinque Vette, oltre alla sistemazione dei primi 4 km di 40 chilometri che saranno recuperati nei prossimi mesi. Un “cammino” che culminerà alla mezzanotte del 31 dicembre 2013, quando sul Monte Poncione tornerà a illuminarsi la croce portata lassù cinquant'anni fa. Più che Laudadio, per il Varesotto Max è stato un “dono di Dio”.

Max Laudadio, from Striscia la Notizia to the woodlands of Valceresio He's the celebrity who's most been associated with the Varese area in recent years. In fact, Max Laudadio is not merely a television personality who has chosen the Alpine foothills for the quality of life. He has also promoted a series of successful local initiatives, mainly dedicated to the protection of the environment. It all began with his "encounter" with the German Alps, in Cuasso al Monte: «I'm originally from the province of Pistoia», says the correspondent for Striscia la Notizia, «and after twenty years of living in Milan, I just couldn't take it anymore. So my wife, my daughter and I went off in search of a smaller city in which to settle. At a certain point we were told about a house in the middle of the woods, at the foot of Monte Poncione. It was an enormous change. But we decided to give it a try: first we spent our weekends there, and we later we began heading out on Friday mornings. Ultimately, we ended up staying there from Monday through Thursday as well. In the end we said, "Let's try living out here." Now we wouldn't trade it for any other place in the world». He has developed a true love for the beech and chestnut trees of the Valceresio area. But this synergy extends to more than just the environment: «Here I rediscovered my love for interpersonal relationships. I like talking to people, and Cuasso has proven to be a friendly environment in which to indulge this desire. And then again, if I want to go to the theatre, the cinema or a club, Varese is just around the corner, and I can go there without having to deal with all the traffic and chaos of the big city». And his affection for the Varese area goes much deeper than words alone. Both on his own and in collaboration with the association ON, which was founded in 2010, Max Laudadio has made a significant contribution to the establishment of the Parco delle Cinque Vette ("Park of the Five Peaks"), even contributing to the repair of the first 4 out of a total of 40 km that will be recovered over the course of the next few months. It's a "journey" that will culminate at midnight on December 31st 2013, when the cross that was brought up to Monte Poncione fifty years ago will once again be illuminated. In short, for the Varese area, Max Laudadio has been a gift from God.

Leigh Roberts, dall’Irlanda con un sogno di Michele Mancino

She has a dream. Lei ha un sogno: rimanere a vivere a Varese anche in futuro, nonostante Leigh e suo marito Colin siano arrivati appena un anno fa dall’Irlanda del Nord. Lui è un maggiore dell’esercito inglese, di stanza a Solbiate Olona e ora in missione in Afghanistan; lei un ex ufficiale delle forze speciali in congedo con la passione per le lingue. Completano il quadretto della famiglia Roberts due figli di 8 e 5 anni. «Non conoscevamo nulla di Varese - racconta Leigh - Ma quando siamo venuti in avanscoperta per due giorni l’impressione è stata ottima e così abbiamo deciso di stabilirci ad Avigno. Qui si vive molto bene grazie anche a un buon rapporto con i vicini perché trovo che la nostra mentalità sia molto simile alla vostra». Sono tanti i fattori che hanno influenzato la scelta di questa famiglia, a partire dall’ambiente naturale e dal clima: «Da noi piove molto di più - continua Leigh - però ci sono atmosfere che ricordano molto l’Irlanda. La cosa straordinaria è che qui c’è tutto: laghi, montagne e un patrimonio storico da visitare. E poi avete il Sacro Monte che per noi è veraramente un’attrazione: è la prima cosa che facciamo conoscere quando ospitiamo amici irlandesi». Altro fattore determinante è stata la vicinanza con la scuola Montessori di Calcinate del Pesce, frequentata dai figli che, oltre all’inglese, parlano un buon italiano. I laghi sono il vero parco divertimenti dei Roberts, che organizzano gite in canoa e frequentano corsi di barca a vela sul Verbano: «Mi piacerebbe avere più percorsi nella natura per organizzare camminate ed escursioni e piste ciclopedonali in città per favorire la mobilità alternativa». Non poteva mancare un riferimento alla cucina: tra i piatti preferiti in famiglia c’è la pasta con i fagioli e con le vongole. Appena il marito tornerà dalla missione militare, si riproporrà la questione della permanenza: «Non dipende solo da noi - conclude la signora - Di certo, chiederemo di rimanere almeno per altri due anni, anche se un futuro varesino è un sogno che Colin condivide con me».

Leigh Roberts, from Ireland with a dream

She has a dream: although Leigh and her husband, Colin, only came here one year ago from Northern Ireland, Leigh dreams of living in Varese for years to come. While her husband is a major in the British army, who's stationed in Solbiate Olona and is currently on a mission in Afghanistan, Leigh herself is a former special forces officer on leave, with a passion for languages. The Roberts family portrait is completed with two beautiful children, aged 8 and 5 years. «We didn't know anything about Varese», Leigh begins, «but when we came out here for a couple of days beforehand, we were

discovered. And then there's Sacro Monte, which for us is an enormous attraction. In fact, it's the first thing we show our Irish friends when they come to visit». Another determining factor was the proximity of the Montessori school in Calcinate del Pesce, which the children attend. In addition to their English, in fact, both children are picking up Italian quite quickly. The Roberts family enjoys spending much time at the lakes, organizing canoe trips and taking sailing lessons on Lake Maggiore: "I'd like to have more trails for taking nature walks and hiking, as well as cycling and

very impressed with the area and decided to settle in Avigno. We really love our life here, also because we've developed a nice relationship with our neighbours... in fact, I've found that our mentality is quite similar to that of the locals». This family's decision was influenced by various factors, starting with the natural environment and the climate: «It rains much more back home», Leigh continues, «but there are nevertheless numerous places around here that remind me of Ireland. The extraordinary thing is that this place has it all: forests, lakes and mountains, not to mention a rich cultural heritage to be

foot paths in the city to promote alternative forms of transportation». And naturally, there's also something to be said for the cuisine: some of the family's favourite dishes include pasta with beans and pasta with clams. As soon as her husband returns from his military mission, the question of remaining in the area will come up once again: «It doesn't depend on us alone», she concludes. «We will certainly ask to remain for at least another two years... even if Colin and I both agree that a permanent future in Varese would be a dream come true».

Ci sono luoghi, colori e profumi che non si possono dimenticare perché sono legati all’infanzia e quello che si è vissuto da bambini s’imprime per sempre nella memoria. Per Francesco Aletti Montano - già esponente di spicco del mondo finanziario e ora l’uomo che ha fatto rinascere il Borgo di Mustonate, una sorta di “Vareseshire” a due passi dal lago - la trasferta da Milano durante le vacanze aveva un significato speciale: «Mio nonno aveva vissuto a Lissago e a Biumo e quindi trascorrere qui i mesi estivi era una tradizione famigliare. È inoltre risaputo che per i milanesi avere una villa a Varese era come avere un palco alla Scala. Oggi, invece, torno a Milano solo nei fine settimana». Aletti Montano però non vive solo di ricordi. Per uno che aveva vissuto la stagione più autentica della campagna varesina, era un dovere preservarla come uno scrigno prezioso: «Mustonate rappresenta la realizzazione di un sogno che ha ridato dignità a una terra, ma è tutta la provincia che ha le carte in regola per presentarsi come un luogo affascinante in grado di cogliere in pieno l’appuntamento di Expo 2015». La crisi obbliga tutti ad aprirsi al mondo e alle sue opportunità, anche se non è per niente semplice ripensare i propri prodotti, soprattutto se si parla di enogastronomia, ma a fare la differenza, secondo Aletti Montano, sarà proprio lo spirito di questi luoghi: «Nel Varesotto c’è una bellezza che aspetta solo di essere condivisa e riscoperta. Da noi si possono fare milioni di attività, ci sono sette laghi, c’è una forza visionaria delle imprese ancora molto viva e che ha prodotto il benessere di cui godiamo. Dobbiamo solo riaprire gli occhi e non dare per scontata una qualità della vita ancora molto alta». La scelta di un imprenditore, discendente di una famiglia di banchieri, di dedicarsi alla terra ha il sapore di una sfida lanciata al mondo che in qualche modo in quel borgo c’è già arrivato. All’esterno degli uffici delle scuderie di Mustonate c’è una targa dedicata alla fondazione Robert F. Kennedy che si occupa di diritti umani, sogni inclusi.

Francesco Aletti Montano, the place where the heart is Certain places, colours and smells cannot be forgotten, as they are linked to our childhood... and children's experiences remain in their memories forever. For Francesco Aletti Montano, already a leading figure in the world of finance and now also known as the man who has succeeded in reviving the village of Mustonate (a sort of "Vareseshire" at just a stone's throw from the lake itself), leaving Milan for this area during the summer holidays always had a special meaning: «My grandfather lived in Lissago and Biumo, so it was a family tradition to spend our summers here. Moreover, for a family from Milan, having a villa in the Varese area was like having a booth at the La Scala theatre. Today, however, I only go back to Milan on weekends». Aletti Montano, however, does not live through his memories alone. For someone who experienced the golden age of the Varese area first hand, he feels the duty to preserve it, like a treasure chest: «Mustonate represents the realization of a dream that has restored dignity to this land, but the entire province boasts the same charm and credentials, and certainly stands to take full advantage of the upcoming Expo 2015 in Milan». The economic crisis has forced everyone to open up to the world and the opportunities that present themselves, even if rethinking one's products can be an extremely difficult task, above all when it comes to food and wine. In Aletti Montano's opinion, however, the local spirit will make all the difference: «The beauty of the Varese area is just waiting to be shared and rediscovered. With seven lakes and millions of business opportunities, the good life that we enjoy is a result of the visionary strength of the local enterprises, which is still very much alive to this day. We just have to open our eyes again, without taking the high quality of our lifestyle for granted». The decision of an entrepreneur, the descendant of a family of bankers, to devote himself to the land, has the air of someone who wants to take on the world: a spirit which has somehow already arrived in that same village. Outside the offices of the Mustonate stables, there's a plaque dedicated to the Robert F. Kennedy foundation, which is devoted to safeguarding human rights, dreams included.

Gianluigi Nuzzi, ritemprarsi all’ombra della Rocca Borromeo di Michele Mancino

«Angera è un luogo dove le lancette del tempo scorrono secondo il mio bioritmo». Il giornalista Gianluigi Nuzzi trascorre ogni estate sul Lago Maggiore in una casa di famiglia, un momento a cui non rinuncerebbe per nient'altro al mondo. La dimensione provinciale infatti non solo non gli va stretta, ma lo aiuta a ritrovare una parte di sé importante quanto quella del cronista abituato alle inchieste giudiziarie, politiche e finanziarie che agitano le vite degli italiani. Insomma, l'uomo che ha denunciato nel libro “Vaticano Spa”, un best seller tradotto in 12 lingue, gli affari sporchi della curia romana, si ritempra all'ombra della Rocca dei Borromeo: «In quella casa c'è un'atmosfera capace di ridare profondità all'esistenza: i letti di fine Ottocento, il legno che cigola, i grossi ragni sui muri che portano soldi. I miei figli rivivono quello che vivevo io durante la mia infanzia in Trentino». Un piccolo paese di provincia, secondo Nuzzi, è ancora in grado di valorizzare i rapporti umani e di proteggerli dalla invadenza della globalizzazione che tende a velocizzare ogni aspetto della vita, anche quando non ce n'è alcun bisogno. E se da una parte le relazioni tra persone sono l'espressione più autentica della provincia italiana, dall'altra la natura gioca un ruolo determinante nel facilitare questo rapporto. «Il lago dà una prospettiva allo sguardo e al cuore, dona profondità alla nostra esistenza perché genera un ritmo diverso. La lentezza aiuta a sedimentare un linguaggio che si rischia di perdere perché sovrastato dal rumore di fondo generato dal mondo». Nuzzi non cambierebbe nulla della sua oasi estiva, ha un solo desiderio: ascoltare più concerti di musica classica e jazz, piuttosto che concerti di hard rock, un genere molto lontano dal suo gusto musicale: «Io farei delle dimore del silenzio perché, a differenza di quanto comunemente si pensa, il silenzio è un modo di comunicare».

Gianluigi Nuzzi, unwinding in the shade of Rocca Borromeo «Angera is a place where the hands of time move according to my own rhythms». Journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi spends every summer at his family's home on Lake Maggiore... it's a time of the year that he wouldn't trade for anything else in the world. Not only is he extremely fond of provincial life, but it helps him rediscover a part of himself that's just as important as his professional life, in which he regularly deals with the judicial, political and financial affairs affecting the country. In short, the man who's book entitled "Vatican SpA" exposed the dirty affairs of the Roman Curia (a best seller that went on to be translated into 12 languages worldwide), enjoys unwinding in the shade of Rocca Borromeo: «There's an atmosphere in that house that gives depth to existence: the late nineteenth century beds, the creaking wood, the large spiders on the walls, that bring good luck. My kids have the chance to enjoy the same experiences I had during my childhood in the province of Trentino». In Nuzzi's opinion, small provincial towns are places where greater importance is placed upon interpersonal relationships and where people are protected against the onslaught of globalization, which tends to speed up every aspect of life, even if there is no need. And while personal relationships represent one of the most genuine expression of Italian provincial life, nature nevertheless continues to play a key role in facilitating these relationships. «The lake gives perspective to both the mind and the heart... it gives depth to our existence because it creates a different rhythm. This slow pace helps to consolidate a language that's at risk of being lost, or rather drowned out by the background noise generated by the rest of the world». While he wouldn't change anything about his summer oasis, Nuzzi nevertheless has one wish: to hear more classical music and jazz concerts rather than hard rock... a genre that's far removed from his personal taste in music: «I would create sanctuaries of silence, because, in contrast to what most people think, silence is a magnificent form of communication».

Krisma, nel Varesotto per incrociare Steve Jobs di Nicola Antonello

Fra Londra e New York, hanno scelto Sarigo, frazione di Castelveccana. In un luogo dove si penserebbe di trovare un coro alpino, in realtà vivono i Krisma, il duo musicale composto da Christina Moser e Maurizio Arcieri famosissimo in Italia e nel mondo per le sperimentazioni artistiche e per essere stati la prima formazione punk del Bel Paese. I due artisti risiedono sopra il Lago Maggiore, con vista sul Monte Rosa, da decenni. Ed è proprio qui che hanno trovato ispirazione per alcune musiche che li hanno resi celebri nel mondo. Eppure a creare il “sodalizio” vincente con la sponda magra del Verbano, è stato un episodio spiacevole: «Mia moglie - racconta Maurizio - abitava in uno chalet a Gignese Stresa. Poi un incendio distrusse la casa e allora ci siamo spostati sulla riva lombarda. Questi luoghi sono considerati come la sponda povera del lago ma, in realtà, nel Luinese abbiamo più ore di sole e la vita è decisamente più umana. Certo, per me che sono di Milano città, il trasloco non è stato facile, ma tornare nel Varesotto dopo i concerti in mezzo mondo è sempre stato piacevole». Non solo: anche fonte di ispirazione: «In questi luoghi - aggiunge la voce maschile dei Krisma - abbiamo composto tante canzoni. Mi ricordo per esempio “Prendo la moto” dell'album “Non ho denaro”». Maurizio Arcieri la canticchia e poi parla dei nuovi progetti: un tour con Den Harrow e Alberto Camerini e, forse un altro album. L'ennesimo, dopo i successi che li hanno proiettati nella storia della musica. Nella loro carriera hanno sperimentato di tutto: pionieri elettronici, sperimentatori in televisione, a partire da Krisma Tv che ai tempi sembrava uno Youtube ante litteram. Nei loro viaggi alla ricerca dell'avanguardia hanno incrociato anche la strada di Steve Jobs. Erano gli anni Settanta e il creatore dell'iPhone chiese ai Krisma di fornirgli alcune applicazioni musicali per il progetto Lisa, il “nonno” del computer Mac. Anche in questo Christina e Maurizio sono stati dei geni.

Krisma, from the Varese area to a meeting with Steve Jobs Between London and New York, they chose Sarigo, an outlying village of Castelveccana. While seemingly a place where one would expect to find an Alpine choir, this is actually the home of Krisma: the musical duo comprised of Christina Moser and Maurizio Arcieri, who are famous worldwide for their artistic experimentation, as well as for being Italy's first punk group. For decades, the two artists have lived in a home overlooking Lake Maggiore, with a splendid view of Monte Rosa. And it is precisely in this place that they found the inspiration to write a number of their most famous tracks. This winning "partnership" that arose along the shores of Lake Maggiore, however, began with an unpleasant episode: «My wife», Maurizio explains, «lived in a chalet in Gignese Stresa. When the house was destroyed by a fire, we moved to the Lombard shore. Although this area is considered to be the poor side of the lake, the Luino area enjoys more hours of sunshine, and the lifestyle is much more enjoyable. Being from Milan, the move was naturally not very easy for me, but it was always nice to come back to the Varese area after having been on tour». And that's not all... it's also been a source of inspiration: «We composed a lot of songs in this area», Krisma's male vocalist adds. «There was 'Prendo la Moto', for example, from the album entitled 'Non Ho Denaro'». After humming a verse or two from the song, Maurizio Arcieri begins talking about his projects for the future, which include a tour with Den Harrow and Alberto Camerini, and perhaps even another album. It would be the latest in a long line of successes that have made music history. They have done a bit of everything over the course of their careers, from pioneers of electronics, to champions of television, even including Krisma TV, which was a sort of Youtube ahead of its time. During their travels in pursuit of the latest technologies, they even crossed paths with Steve Jobs. It was the 1970s, and the creator of the iPhone asked the duo to provide him with a number of musical applications for the Lisa project, the "grandfather" of the Macintosh computer. And as always, Christina and Maurizio came through with flying colours.

Morotti: meglio Daverio del salotto buono di Milano Vivevano nel salotto buono di Milano, ma hanno preferito “accomodarsi” a Daverio. Troppo inquinamento, troppo grigio, troppo caos nel capoluogo lombardo. Meglio la pace del Varesotto, la vista sul Lago di Varese, gli scorci e i tramonti del Monte Rosa in lontananza. Se una volta i “signori” milanesi costruivano sotto il Sacro Monte la casa delle vacanze, Franco e Monica Morotti hanno deciso di trasferirsi stabilmente. La loro è una residenza attiva, un arricchimento straordinario per tutta la provincia, visto che oltre allo showroom di Villa Morotti Arredamenti, la loro dimora è aperta a tutti. Con una scelta illuminata dei proprietari, il portone gentilizio conduce in un centro catalizzatore di eventi culturali, concerti, reading di poesia, di iniziative del Fondo per l'Ambiente e altro ancora. «Stufi della vita caotica milanese - racconta Monica Morotti - cercavamo una casa grande in cui trasferirci. Ci innamorammo subito della dimora di Beonio Brocchieri, inviato del Corriere della Sera, che era in vendita a Daverio. L'abbiamo acquistata, restaurata e poi ci abbiamo portato il negozio di arredamento di Milano. Per me fu uno shock terribile: avevo 19 anni, mi ero appena sposata e lasciare la città non fu facile. Ora non mi muoverei per niente al mondo: adoro la tranquillità, il verde e i panorami mozzafiato che ogni giorno ci regala la nostra terra. Anche i miei figli amano questo luogo: ogni venerdì ci ritroviamo per la classica cena di famiglia». Entrando nella villa settecentesca si ha subito l'impressione di trovarsi in un ambiente realmente vissuto e non in un semplice spazio espositivo. Divani, sedie, tavoli, librerie, camere da letto: ogni elemento d'arredo si trova nel suo “habitat naturale”. Entrando nel cortile d'onore si può inoltre ammirare la splendida cornice offerta dai porticati e dal verde del cortile, che lascia spazio alla suggestione di saloni dai soffitti a volta magnificamente affrescati. Un gioiellino sapientemente personalizzato dall'eleganza e dal buon gusto di Franco e Monica Morotti.

Morotti: better Daverio than the high society of Milan Despite living among Milan's high society, they preferred to "settle down" in Daverio. In Milan, there's too much pollution, too much grey and too much chaos in general. With its magnificent lake, and the panoramas and sunsets of Monte Rosa in the distance, the serenity of the Varese area is difficult to surpass. And while the members of Milan's high society once built their vacation homes at the foot of Sacro Monte, Franco and Monica Morotti decided to move there permanently. In addition to the Villa Morotti Arredamenti showroom, in fact, their residence is open to all, representing an active presence in the area and vastly enriching the life of the entire province. Thanks to a stroke of genius on behalf of the owners, the magnificent front door opens up onto a beautiful cultural centre that has played host to numerous concerts, poetry readings, initiatives for the Environmental Fund and much, much more. «We had grown tired of the chaos of Milan Milan»,, explains Monica Morotti, «and we were looking for a large house to move into. We immediately fell in love with the home of Beonio Brocchieri, a correspondent for the Corriere della Sera newspaper, which was up for sale in Daverio. We therefore decided to purchase it and, once the renovations had been completed, we transferred our furniture shop in Milan to the new location. The move was a shock for me: at just 19 years of age and having been recently married, leaving the city wasn't easy. But now I wouldn't move away for anything in the world: I've fallen in love with the serenity, the greenery and the breathtaking views that this landscape has to offer on a daily basis. My children love it as well, and we get together every Friday for a traditional family dinner». Upon entering the 18th-century villa, one immediately gets the impression of an actual home environment, rather than a simple showroom. Sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases and complete bedrooms: each piece of furniture is displayed in its own "natural habitat". After touring the suggestive halls with their magnificent frescoed ceilings, guests can head outside to admire the beautiful arcades and greenery of the courtyard. The residence is a true architectural gem that's been cleverly personalized according to the elegant taste of Franco and Monica Morotti.

Nanni Svampa, quel “Gufo” sul Lago Maggiore di Mario Chiodetti

«Perché ho scelto di vivere a Porto Valtravaglia? Papà era di Cannobio, la mamma di Sangiano, i suoceri di qui, mi è parso un buon compromesso. E poi loro ci tenevano le bambine quando andavamo in tournée». Scherza Nanni Svampa sul buen retiro in riva al Lago Maggiore, la sua casa da oltre dieci anni «da quando ci hanno sfrattato da Milano», anche se la frequentazione di questi luoghi è molto più lontana nel tempo. «Certo, il paesaggio è splendido, chi vuole camminare ha sentieri a volontà, chi pedala un’ampia scelta d’itinerari, però ogni tanto ci si sente un po’ in un altro mondo, in mezzo a tedeschi e olandesi che qui hanno i loro villaggi. È un turismo residenziale il loro, con le villette tramandate di generazione in generazione», generazione», dice Nanni, impagabile traduttore delle canzoni di Georges Brassens in dialetto milanese e grande protagonista della stagione dei Gufi, uno dei principali gruppi musicali italiani, dialettale milanese e cabarettistico, a metà degli anni Sessanta. «A Milano conservo un pied-à-terre, alle volte ci si ferma dopo un concerto o una serata tra amici, e devo dire che mia moglie Dina un poco di nostalgia per la metropoli ce l’ha, anche se non tornerebbe ad abitarci in modo continuativo. A Porto ci sto bene». Gran pescatore di pesci persici in passato «la barchetta non ce l’ho più, un po’ la salute un po’ che ci son meno pesci», oggi il Nanni coltiva l’orto di casa con grande passione e competenza: «è un bello svago, ormai non faccio più nemmeno le vacanze estive, e poi ci tengo ai miei pomodori, quest’anno in ritardo, anche se con il passare degli anni la terra diventa sempre più bassa. Ogni tanto qualche collega amico, come Flavio Oreglio o Roberto Brivio arriva fin qui a trovarmi, si chiacchiera dei vecchi tempi, ormai progetti se ne fanno pochi».

Nanni Svampa, the “Owl” of Lake Maggiore «Why did I decide to come live in Porto Valtravaglia? My father was from Cannobio, my mother was from Sangiano and my in-laws lived not far from here... so this seemed like a good compromise. What's more, they used to watch the kids when we were on tour tour».. Nanni Svampa went on to joke about how he came to live in this beautiful getaway on the shores of Lake Maggiore, which has been his home for over ten years now... "ever since we were evicted from Milan", he explains, even if he had already been frequenting the area for many years before that. «The area certainly offers a splendid landscape... there are countless trails for hiking enthusiasts and numerous cycling routes. However, the area is also home to various vacation spots frequented by the Germans and the Dutch, so every once in a while you get the sense of being in a foreign country. Theirs is a sort of residential tourism, with little villas being handed down from generation to generation», explains Nanni, the renowned translator of Georges Brassens' songs into Milanese dialect, and protagonist of the Stagione dei Gufi, one of Italy's most popular musical and comedy groups of the mid-1960s. «I still have one foot on the ground in Milan... we sometimes remain in the city for a while after a concert or an evening with friends. I must admit that my wife, Dina, misses the big city a little bit, even if she'd never want to live there again. We're happy here in Porto». Although he was once a passionate perch fisherman, Nanni explains «I don't have a boat anymore for a couple of reasons... there are fewer fish out there now and my health isn't quite what it used to be». Today, Nanni has taken up the hobby of cultivating his own vegetable garden: «It's a nice way to relax... I don't take summer vacations anymore, and I like taking care of my tomatoes, which are a bit late this year. The land, however, is getting lower as the years go by. Every so often, an old friend or colleague comes to visit me, like Flavio Oreglio or Roberto Brivio, and we'll talk about old times... there aren't many new projects in the making nowadays».

Pietro Anastasi, il campione s’incontra allo stadio di Mario Chiodetti

«Vediamoci allo stadio, è quella la mia casa», dice al telefono Pietro Anastasi, che non ha mai abbandonato il quartiere di Masnago da quando, nell’83, decise dopo il ritiro dal calcio giocato di stabilirsi in città. Casa in via Caracciolo e “Franco Ossola” a un passo, così il centravanti che ne fece tre alla Juventus in quel celeberrimo 4 febbraio 1968 del 5-0 «due li piazzai proprio in questa porta», torna volentieri sul prato dei trionfi con il Varese di Giuan Borghi, «certamente il più forte mai visto». Il bomber di Juventus, Inter e della Nazionale - 25 presenze e otto goal, memorabile quello contro la Jugoslavia che ci diede l’Europeo nel ’68 - a 65 anni mantiene un fisico invidiabile, «anche se oggi faccio il pensionato e mi accontento di vedere le partite del Varese e dell’amata Juve». Il suo arrivo a Varese data 1966, “catturato” al volo da Casati che l’aveva visto giocare per un caso alla Massiminiana di Catania, ma “Pietruzzu”, che in squadra rimase solo due anni, portato via dalla Juventus di Heriberto Herrera per la cifra record di 660 milioni, mise su casa qui nel 1977, dopo il primo anno all’Inter «ero in affitto alla Brunella» Brunella»,, e poi definitivamente sei anni più tardi. «Con mia moglie Anna Bianchi, di Valmarchirolo, conosciuta a Varese a 19 anni, lei ne aveva 18, decidemmo di lasciare la casa di Torino, peraltro affittata a Trapattoni quando arrivò ad allenare la Juve. Così da trent’anni esatti viviamo qui, i nostri figli sono ormai sistemati - Silvano è sposato in America e fa l’architetto, Gianluca è poliziotto a Varese - e ci troviamo bene, la città è tranquilla, la gente rispettosa, c’è tanto verde e tutto quello che serve, Milano e Lugano sono a due passi, se si vuol fare “vita di società” non ci sono problemi». Pietro ha una casa di vacanza vicino a Messina, dove trascorre le estati e fa rimpatriate con i vecchi compagni della Massiminiana, complice Nino Massimino, uno dei nipoti di Angelo, storico presidente del Catania.

Pietro Anastasi, a meeting with the champion at the stadium «Let's meet at the stadium, that's my home», Pietro Anastasi says on the phone. After retiring from football in 1983, in fact, he left the city and has since never abandoned the his home in Masnago. The striker, in fact, who scored three goals against Juventus during the famous 5-0 match on February 4th 1968, lives in a house on Via Caracciolo, just around the corner from Franco Ossola. «I put two right in this goal", he says proudly upon returning to the field of Varese's old glories under Giuan Borghi. "That was certainly the strongest team that's ever been seen in these parts». As a former attacker for Juventus, Inter Milan and the Italian National team (with 25 games played and eight goals, including a memorable match against Yugoslavia that saw Italy win the European Championship of 1968), he remains in great shape, even at 65 years of age. «I still like to stay in shape, even if I'm retired now and have to make do with just watching the Varese and Juventus matches». He first came to Varese in 1966, having been “captured” on the fly by Casati, who had happened to see him playing for Massiminiana in Catania. And although “Pietruzzu” only remained on the team for two years, having been taken away by Juventus under Heriberto Herrera for a record amount of 660 million lire, he nevertheless moved here in 1977 after his first year playing for Inter Milan («I was renting at the Brunella», he recalls), ultimately building himself a permanent home in the area six years later. «My wife, Anna Bianchi, is from Valmarchirolo. We met in Varese when I was just 19 and she was 18. Together, we decided to leave our house in Turin, which we actually rented to Trapattoni when he came to coach for Juventus. So we've lived here for exactly thirty years. Our children are now settled... Silvano is married and works as an architect in the United States, and Gianluca is a policeman in Varese. We're happy here. The city is quiet, the people are nice and there's lots of greenery... what more could you ask for? Milan and Lugano are just around the corner, so it's no problem if you want to get out and do something social». Pietro has a vacation home near Messina where he spends his summers and gets together with his old team mates from Massiminiana, not to mention Nino Massimino, a grandchild of Angelo Massimino (the ex-president of the Catania football club).

Lo incontro nel suo atelier all’interno del capannone dismesso dell’ex cotonificio di Besozzo sulla strada per Bogno. Dipinti, sculture, colori, trucioli. Rod Dudley, umile come tutti gli artisti degni di questo nome, lavora senza assistenti intagliando il legno, dipingendo, trasferendo la vanità umana in opere d’arte pregne della vena ironica e dissacrante che lo contraddistingue. Australiano di Melbourne, ha lasciato l’Oceania nel ’65 per venire a perfezionare il suo talento in Brera: «Facevo pratica come professore d’arte e durante il tirocinio mi fu offerta una borsa di studio del Governo Italiano. A quei tempi ogni nave in partenza da Sidney aveva un posto riservato a un artista, ma quando giunsi al porto di Sidney, scoprii che era già stato attribuito. Ormai deciso a partire, spesi tutti i miei risparmi per il biglietto e mi imbarcai sulla Galileo per raggiungere Milano ove frequentai Brera nella classe di Marino Marini. Mi rimanevano solo 300 dollari australiani per sbarcare il lunario e avevo sempre una gran fame! Per mia fortuna lo scultore Sangregorio necessitava di un aiuto per sbozzare i pezzi di marmo e granito. Lavoravo con lui al mattino e a mezzogiorno mi dava un pasto caldo. Di pomeriggio potevo dedicarmi alla mia arte nella stanzetta affittata sulle alture di Sesto Calende. Poi conobbi mia moglie Christina, qualcuno ci parlò di una casa a Besozzo e decidemmo di stabilirci qui». Cinquant’anni di vita varesina per questo grande artista celebre a livello internazionale, ma cosa può averlo attratto, proprio qui in terra insubre? «Prima di tutto la natura, splendida, opulenta e poi i laghi. Amo pranzare sulla terrazza del Bar Lido che io chiamo il mio salotto personale con una vista mozzafiato sul Lago Maggiore, uno dei tre laghi della mia vita con il Kaiafas greco e Swan Bay a Victoria». 54

Rod Dudley, an Australian in Varese I met him in his studio in the old abandoned warehouse of the Besozzo cotton mill, on the road to Bogno. Paintings, sculptures, colours and wood shavings. As humble as any artist worthy of the title, and with the ironic and irreverent tone that sets him apart, Rod Dudley works alone, instilling his wood carvings and paintings with an element of human vanity. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he left Oceania in 1965 to come and perfect his talent at the Brera Art Academy in Milan: «I was studying to become an art professor, and was offered a scholarship by the Italian Government during my internship. In those days, every ship sailing from Sydney had a place reserved for an artist, but when I arrived at the port of Sydney, I found out that it had already been assigned. I had already decided to leave, however, so I spent all my savings for a ticket on the Galileo to reach Milan, where I studied under Marino Marini at the Brera Art Academy. All I had left over was 300 Australian dollars, and I was always starving! Luckily for me, the sculptor Giancarlo Sangregorio needed help roughing some pieces of marble and granite. So I would work with him in the mornings, and he would give me a hot meal for lunch. During the afternoons, I dedicated myself to my artwork in the room I was renting in Sesto Calende. Then I met my wife, Christina, and someone told us about a house for sale in Besozzo, so we decided to settle here». After fifty years, therefore, how does this internationally renowned artist describe what first attracted him to the Varese area? «Mostly it was the splendid and opulent nature, including the lakes. I love having lunch on the terrace at the Lido Bar, which I refer to as my own personal living room, where I can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore... together with Kaiafas Lake in Greece and Swan Bay in Victoria, in fact, it's one of my three favourite lakes worldwide».

La fondatrice di “Children First” ha scelto di lasciare la Germania natale per risiedere a Varese in una splendida proprietà sulle alture della città. «Mio marito ed io da sempre adoriamo l’Italia - dice Sylvia Eibl - e questo territorio, porta d’accesso tra il Nord Europa e il Mediterraneo, risulta il posto ideale per noi. Decisiva è stata la presenza della Scuola Europea, per noi indispensabile visto il numero di figli e la nostra cultura cosmopolita». Dolce e fragile all’apparenza, Sylvia è capace di smuovere montagne di solidarietà. La nobile mission dell’Associazione da lei varata oltre dieci anni fa è venire in aiuto ai bambini delle zone toccate dalle guerre e dalle catastrofi naturali. Bimbi orfani, bisognosi di cure. L’ultima iniziativa è stata in Pakistan per attrezzare un laboratorio audiologico nella regione dello Swabi, insegnando al tecnico locale come produrre la “chiocciola” e sintonizzare gli apparecchi acustici. Un progetto che riguarda 27 bambini di età tra 0 e 9 anni con gravi patologie dell’apparato uditivo che frequentano la “Jan School” nel villaggio rurale Yaqoobi. Questo progetto è stato reso possibile grazie alla preziosa collaborazione di un centro audioprotesico milanese e di un’impresa che ha donato 54 apparecchi retroauricolari di ultima generazione. Il tutto in sinergia con la “Comunity 360” e con l’imprenditore di Cardano al Campo Bruno Mocchi: «Grazie alla sua grande generosità abbiamo potuto sostenere le spese di viaggio, il materiale, l’attrezzatura scolastica, i 3 logopedisti che rivestono nella scuola il ruolo di insegnanti oltre al pullman che ogni mattina raccoglie i 27 bambini, da 7 diversi villaggi, li porta a scuola per 3 ore e poi li riporta a casa. Grazie a Bruno Mocchi la partecipazione al mantenimento di questa scuola è garantita per 5 anni». Cosa pensa Sylvia Eibl della nostra città? «Varese è una città pulita, ordinata, molto vivibile e con i laghi in vicinanza. Le persone sono cordiali, certo questo dipende da come ci si presenta: in Germania si suol dire “come tu urli nel bosco così ti torna l’eco”».

Sylvia Eibl, the blonde angel of "Children First" The founder of "Children First" left her homeland in Germany to come live in a beautiful home overlooking the city of Varese. «My husband and I have always loved Italy», Sylvia Eibl explains, «and this area, which serves as the gateway between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, is the ideal place for us both. One of the most decisive elements was the fact that there's a European School here, which is indispensable for us given our large number of children and our cosmopolitan culture». Despite her sweet and gentle appearance, Sylvia is capable of moving mountains in terms of solidarity. The Association that she founded over a decade ago is dedicated to helping children in war-torn and disasterstricken areas. Orphans and children in need of medical care. Most recently, the Association sent a team to Pakistan in order to provide equipment for an audiology laboratory in the Swabi region, as well as to teach the technical staff how to produce the "spiral" and to tune the hearing aids themselves. The project involves 27 children from 0 to 9 years of age with severe auditory problems, who are attending the "Jan School" in the rural village of Yaqoobi. This project was made possible thanks to the precious collaboration of a hearing centre in Milan, as well as a company that donated 54 BTE hearing aids of the last generation. All in complete synergy with "Comunity 360" and with Bruno Mocchi, an entrepreneur from Cardano al Campo: «Thanks to his generosity, we were able to sustain the costs for the travel expenses, the materials, the school equipment, the 3 speech therapists who serve as teachers at the school, and even the school bus that picks up the 27 children from 7 different villages every morning, brings them to school for 3 hours and then brings them beck home in the afternoon. Thanks to Bruno Mocchi, the school's activities will be able to be maintained for at least another 5 years». So what does Sylvia Eibl think of our city? «Varese is a very clean and orderly city, and the nearby lakes render it an excellent place to live. The people are friendly, but this naturally depends on how you interact with them: as they say in Germany... "the sound of your voice in the woods will echo back to you just the same».

«Le Prealpi hanno come caratteristica i boschi e si dice che quando piove tanto c'è molto verde. Ma per chi ama questi luoghi, soprattutto se viene dalla città, anche la pioggia ha la sua bellezza. La nebbiolina e le gocce di umidità di questo periodo mi danno un senso di rilassamento e creano un'atmosfera che aiuta a staccare con i ritmi della metropoli e a meditare». Questo è uno dei motivi per cui il milanese doc Michele Mozzati, socio del celebre duo “Gino e Michele”, ha scelto di vivere part-time a Orino. E per uno che di professione fa lo scrittore e l'autore televisivo, trovare un luogo dove poter creare e sperimentare nuove idee, in tutta tranquillità, non è un particolare di poco conto: «La mia casa mi aiuta a pensare e a scrivere. A Orino abbiamo fatto le riunioni di redazione della "Smemoranda" e sempre qui sono nate alcune puntate di "Zelig" con gli artisti, i musicisti e i ballerini che provavano nelle varie stanze. Sembra un luogo fatto apposta per accogliere e confrontarsi sulle idee». Orino, una delle porte di accesso al Parco del Campo dei Fiori, offre una natura dominante, addolcita da passeggiate e sentieri modellati dal tempo. Insomma, il luogo ideale dove anche un autore metropolitano come Mozzati può mettere radici senza dover rinunciare ai privilegi della globalizzazione. Nonostante il mondo sia diventato molto piccolo, sottovalutare la provincia perché ritenuta triste e marginale è un errore. Lo aveva capito Piero Chiara, che Mozzati definisce «un vero intellettuale», lo ha ribadito un altro famoso autore contemporaneo, Andrea Vitali, spesso accostato al celebre scrittore di Luino. «Ho scelto di vivere tra il Lago Maggiore e quello di Varese perché mi danno allegria - conclude Mozzati - Allo stesso tempo però non potrei mai rinunciare alla mia città. Quindi trovare un equilibrio tra questi due mondi, così diversi tra loro per ritmo e tempi, è un’esigenza sia del corpo che della mente. Io questo equilibrio l’ho trovato a tre quarti d’ora da Milano».

Michele Mozzati, with “Gino and Michele”... the birth of “Zelig” «The Alpine foothills are thickly forested, and when it rains a lot everything gets very green. But for those who love this area, above all if they're from the city, even the rain has a beauty of its own. During these periods, the mist and the water droplets give me a sense of relaxation, creating an atmosphere that helps me to meditate and forget the chaos of the city». This is one of the reasons why Milan native Mozzati Michele, a member of the famous duo "Gino and Michele", decided to live part-time in Orino. And for someone who works as an author and TV writer, finding a peaceful place where you can create and experiment with new ideas is extremely important: «My house helps me think and get my ideas down on paper. My place in Orino has hosted editorial meetings for "Smemoranda" and has even given rise to a number of episodes of "Zelig", with the artists, musicians and dancers rehearsing in the various rooms. It's like it was specifically designed to welcome guests and to discuss different ideas». As one of the gateways to the Campo dei Fiori park, Orino offers magnificent natural surroundings, with numerous walking and hiking trails having been carved out over time. In short, it's an ideal place where even an urban writer like Mozzati can plant his roots without having to forego the benefits of globalization. Even if the world has become quite small, it would be a mistake to underestimate the value of provincial life, writing it off as marginal and sad. This has been understood by the likes of Piero Chiara, who Mozzati defines as "a true intellectual", and has even been repeated by another famous contemporary author, Andrea Vitali, who's often compared to the famous writer from Luino. «I chose to live between Lake Maggiore and Lake Varese because they cheer me up - Mozzati concludes - and at the same time I could never abandon my city entirely. Finding a proper balance between these two vastly different worlds, therefore, was a necessity on both a physical and mental level. And I found this balance at just 45 minutes from the heart of Milan».

È una situazione che sorprende perché molto diversa dall’immagine che si ha fuori dell’Italia. Io gioco a golf, ma qui si può fare ogni tipo di sport: penso a quelli sull’acqua, dalla vela al canottaggio, ma anche il ciclismo, per il quale Varese è nota un po’ in tutto il mondo». Far parte di una piccola comunità, per Martin è importante. Una buona qualità della vita non può infatti prescindere dalle buone relazioni tra le persone, meglio se inserite in un ambiente naturale sano: «Mi piacciono molto le montagne e i laghi perché offrono opportunità di divertimento tutto l'anno: dalla nuotata rilassante, dopo una calda giornata estiva passata in ufficio, alla passeggiata con tutta la famiglia nelle giornate più fredde». Ma quello che potrebbe convincere molti giovani ricercatori a rimanere in provincia di Varese, secondo Martin, è una prospettiva economica: «La costituzione di un parco tecnologico per le aziende high tech, a integrazione di un tessuto imprenditoriale di prim’ordine, creerebbe un circolo virtuoso di nuovi posti di lavoro e ulteriore sviluppo per tutta l'area».

Sandra Caldeira, Nigel Taylor e Martin Poljansek sono tre scienziati del Jrc di Ispra e arrivano rispettivamente da Portogallo, Irlanda e Slovenia. Venire a vivere in provincia di Varese non è stata una vera e propria scelta, quanto una conseguenza del loro lavoro. Ma il caso, a volte, è più lungimirante della volontà perché oggi tutti e tre non solo amano la terra dei laghi, ma concordano sulle ragioni di questo amore e in parte anche su quello che si dovrebbe migliorare. «Sono felice di essere qui - dice Sandra - perché amo la natura, il cibo, le persone e il loro modo di relazionarsi con disponibilità. I servizi sono efficienti anche se i trasporti andrebbero migliorati e non sempre permettono a chi è senza automobile di scoprire questa provincia». Anche Nigel sottolinea la bellezza del paesaggio - soprattutto le colline che gli ricordano l’Irlanda - e l’efficienza dei servizi. «A Varese c’è una combinazione di fattori positivi che è ideale per le famiglie: da una parte ci sono la natura e i laghi, dall’altra una buona organizzazione - spiega il ricercatore irlandese.

Ispra&Scienza, a fatal attraction Sandra Caldeira, Nigel Taylor and Martin Poljansek are three scientists working for Jrc in Ispra, and respectively come from Portugal, Ireland and Slovenia. For these individuals, coming to live in the Varese area was a career decision rather than a lifestyle choice. But fate is sometimes more far-sighted than the mind, and today all three have not only fallen in love with this land of lakes, but are also in agreement as to the reasons for this love, as well as what could be improved upon. «I'm happy to live here», Sandra says, «because I love the natural surroundings, the food, the people and their friendly mannerisms. The municipal services are efficient, even if the means of public transport could be improved upon, as they do not always provide people without cars full access to the entire province». Likewise, Nigel is also impressed with the beauty of the natural landscape, above all the hills, which remind him of Ireland, as well as the efficiency of the public services. «Varese offers an excellent combination of factors that are ideal for families: on the one hand, there's the natural environment and the lakes, while on the other hand there's the excellent organization», the Irish researcher explains. «It's a surprising situation, because it's in stark contrast to the idea of Italy that many people have abroad. While I play golf, here you can do any kind of sport you like... including water sports like sailing and boating, not to mention cycling, for which the Varese area is renowned all over the world». For Martin, being part of a small community is important. Good interpersonal relationships are an essential component to a quality lifestyle, and a healthy natural environment makes a big difference as well: «I love the mountains and lakes because they offer opportunities for leisure activities all year round: from a relaxing swim after a hot summer's day spent in the office, to taking a relaxing stroll with the entire family on the colder days of the year». According to Martin, however, some of the most important factors that could convince many young researchers to remain in the province of Varese are the economic prospects: «The establishment of a technology park for hightech companies, along with a top-notch entrepreneurial environment, would create a virtuous cycle of new jobs and would further the development of the entire area».

Antonio Di Domenico, lo stilista affascinato dalle Prealpi

«Dopo 10 anni nella grande Milano, ho visitato Varese e ne sono rimasto affascinato». Così dice Antonio Di Domenico, stilista napoletano di Stone Island, il brand di abbigliamento che fa capo a Carlo Rivetti. Le radici “tessili” della nostra provincia avranno sicuramente fatto la loro parte per conquistare lo stilista, ma a farlo innamorare è stato il Brinzio. «Lo chiamo “piccolo villaggio” racconta Di Domenico -. È una vera perla che ti permette di essere immerso nella natura. Io sono sempre in giro per l’Italia, tra Milano e Modena, rientrare a casa è il mio toccasana». «Milano è un grande supermercato - continua - La metropoli va usata: ci si va, si prende quello di cui si ha bisogno e si ritorna a casa. Io non ho obblighi di orario. Fisso appuntamenti dopo le 10 del mattino, così ho il tempo di arrivarci. Vivendo al Brinzio mi godo il paesaggio, i colori e il cambio delle stagioni». Tutta linfa creativa per un artista: «Nelle città si imparano tutte le tonalità di grigio. Qui, invece, ci sono i rossi aranciati, i verdi, gli azzurri». L’abitazione dello stilista, dall’esterno, è la tipica corte di campagna. Ma all’interno l’appartamento è arredato come se fosse in città, con rovere e ardesia brasiliana. «Per i miei colleghi sono un pazzo che è scappato da Milano per approdare in un piccolo villaggio - continua Di Domenico -. Sono scettici, ma poi rimangono colpiti dalle atmosfere e dalle sagre. E così vengono spesso a trovarmi per divertirsi e rilassarsi. Meraviglioso, in inverno, passeggiare nel bosco innevato. Io la chiamo “la magia del Brinzio”. O anche: “la mia boule de neige” ». Nel futuro? «Prevedo di fermarmi parecchio al Brinzio. Ma nei mesi più freddi, per non dovermi alzare due ore prima a spalare la neve, ho comprato a Varese un piccolo appartamento. Ho scelto il quartiere di Bosto per l’assonanza con la città di Boston. Con un terrazzo, indispensabile per Rocco e Romeo. Si chiamano come il figlio di Beckham e il figlio di Madonna, ma sono un Jack Russell e un bassotto a pelo ruvido».

Antonio Di Domenico, a designer impassioned by the Alpine foothills «After 10 years in Milan, I was fascinated when I visited Varese». These are the words of Antonio Di Domenico, Neapolitan designer for Stone Island, the clothing brand owned by Carlo Rivetti. And while our province's roots in the textile industry certainly did their part to win the designer's affections, that which truly conquered his heart was Brinzio. «I call it the 'little village'», Di Domenico explains. «It's a true gem immersed in the beauty of nature. I'm always travelling around Italy, mainly between Milan and Modena, so returning home is a blessing for me». «Milan is an enormous supermarket», he continues. «The big city certainly has its uses: you can go there, get what you need and head back home. I don't have many time constraints. I make all my appointments for after 10 in the morning so I'll have time to get there. What I love about living in Brinzio is the landscape, the colours and the changing of the seasons». For an artist, it's all about inspiration: «In the city, you can learn about every shade of grey. Here, on the other hand, there are shades of orange and red, intermingling with greens and blues». From outside, the designer's home looks like a typical country courtyard. But inside, the apartment is decorated in the style of an urban residence, complete with oak and Brazilian slate. "My colleagues think I'm crazy to have left the Milan to settle in a small town", Di Domenico continues. «They're skeptical, but once they see it they're impressed by the atmosphere and the local festivals. They often come to visit, in fact, to have some fun and relax. It's hard to describe how it feels to take a walk in the snowy woods during the wintertime. I refer to it as "the magic of Brinzio" Or even: "my 'boule de neige'». So what are his plans for the future? «I plan on spending a lot of time in Brinzio. But in the colder months, just so I don't have to get up two hours early to shovel the snow, I bought a little apartment in Varese. I chose the Bosto neighbourhood because the name reminds me of the city of Boston. It's got a nice terrace for Rocco and Romeo. I named them after the children of David Beckham and Madonna, but one is a Jack Russell terrier and the other is a wire-haired dachshund».

«Nella ricorrenza della Festa nazionale, promossa da una Società di giovani varesini, intitolata “Voluntas”, costituitasi per la fusione in bronzo del monumento patrio ai Cacciatori delle Alpi, il tenore Francesco Tamagno presiedette all’ordinamento artistico della Grande Mattinata Musicale. Vi cantarono gentilmente le Signore: Cruz Augusta, soprano e Monteith Florence, soprano, e i signori Arimondi cavalier Vittorio, basso, e Bianchi cavalier Giovanni, baritono, e Tamagno commendator Francesco, tenore». La puntuale cronaca di Pompeo Cambiasi, storiografo della Scala, ci riporta al fastoso concerto tenuto al Teatro Sociale di Varese il 20 settembre 1895, complice Tamagno Tamagno,, tenore allora celeberrimo e all’apice della carriera (nel 1887 era stato il primo “Otello” verdiano) che aveva scelto di vivere nella nostra città, nella splendida villa Albuzzi Del Pero di Giubiano, acquistata nel 1885, ribattezzata Margherita in onore della figlia, e arredata con le sue splendide collezioni, tra cui quella di lepidotteri, conservata oggi nelle sale dei Musei civici di Villa Mirabello e quadri d’autore, compresa una tela di Nicolas Poussin. Uomo cordiale e generoso, figlio del popolo che compiva i suoi esercizi di canto sotto il ponte della Dora, con i piedi nella ghiaia, Tamagno amava improvvisarsi giardiniere, ortolano e impagliatore, come ricordò Edmondo De Amicis, come lui piemontese, nei suoi “Nuovi ritratti letterari e artistici”. Spesso la mattina il celebre tenore partiva in carrozzella per recarsi in piazza Porcari, ad acquistare il giornale da Marco Pontiggia e passare dal Sociale a dare le ultime direttive per le serate musicali. Amò moltissimo la figlia Margherita, che pare fosse nata dalla relazione con una nobildonna di casa Savoia, tanto che le prime dieci copie dei dischi di Tamagno erano inviate in omaggio alla Casa Reale. Il tenore è forse il più illustre tra i grandi personaggi del mondo delle arti innamorati del Varesotto tanto da stabilirvisi in permanenza, affascinati dalla bellezza del paesaggio e dalla quiete, ma anche dalla vicinanza con Milano e la high-society che allora si dava convegno nella grandi ville e negli alberghi della riva piemontese del Lago Maggiore, dove di lì a qualche anno, nell’Isolino di San Giovanni, avrebbe villeggiato Arturo Toscanini. Per rimanere nella Varese di Tamagno, e spostandoci soltanto di pochi chilometri, incontriamo a Barasso un altro personaggio cardine del mondo musicale non soltanto italiano, l’editore Giulio Ricordi Ricordi,, che spesso usciva dalla sua Milano per raggiungere la figlia Ginetta - la preferita da Giuseppe Verdi - andata sposa al nobile Luigi Origoni, proprietario di una

splendida villa al curvone della via per Comerio. Il “sciur Giuli” quando villeggiava a Barasso amava dipingere ad acquerello scorci del paese e si intratteneva amabilmente con gli abitanti, raccontando spiritosi aneddoti sulla vita musicale meneghina. Da Varese passò anche il primo italiano a ricevere il premio Nobel nel 1906, il medico Camillo Golgi Golgi,, legato alla nostra città dall’amicizia per il suo maestro Giulio Bizzozero, il padre dell’istologia italiana, del quale sposò la nipote Evangelina Aletti con la quale abitò per qualche tempo dietro la piazza della Motta, in una casa recentemente demolita. Il grande ricercatore, nato a Corteno in val Camonica, legò il suo nome alla scoperta della cosiddetta “reazione nera” che consente di colorare selettivamente le cellule nervose. Già agli inizi del ‘900, le grandi famiglie della borghesia imprenditoriale milanese, come i Pirelli a Casciago e gli Zambeletti a Velate, lasciarono segni importanti nel territorio, con l’architettura di ville imponenti e la formazione di circoli culturali privati, di cui fecero parte i più bei nomi della letteratura e della poesia italiana del dopoguerra. In tempi più recenti, e purtroppo meno spensierati di quelli della Belle Époque, quando Varese era considerata uno dei più rinomati centri di villeggiatura d’Europa, diversi intellettuali trovarono rifugio dalle nostre parti per sfuggire al fascismo o ai bombardamenti dei grandi centri. Da Elio Vittorini Vittorini,, ospite alla Settima Cappella del Sacro Monte nella villa di Ginetta Varisco - poi diventata sua seconda moglie - ad accogliere le staffette partigiane, a Giovanni Raboni, Raboni, giovinetto a Sant’Ambrogio nel periodo bellico, che fuggiva da Pontiggia ad acquistare i libri di Guido Piovene e Massimo Bontempelli, le poesie di Vittorio Sereni e Carlo Betocchi, fino a Renato Guttuso ispirato dal silenzio di Velate. Scrive Raboni: «Io venivo ogni sera incontro a mio padre che arrivava qui davanti con il tram da Varese, dopo aver preso il treno da Milano a Varese. E poi da qui, come da una sorta di palco, si assisteva al rito annuale del pellegrinaggio al Sacro Monte, con i pellegrini che passavano la mattina festosi sotto il sole e tornavano ogni pomeriggio, sempre, regolarmente sotto la pioggia: perché questo è il clima di questi luoghi». Diamo invece la parola a Giorgio Soavi, autore nel ’79 del volume “Nei luoghi di Guttuso” per raccontarci una giornata velatese del pittore di Bagheria: «A Velate come a Roma lo serve un cameriere, Aldo. La villa ha due atelier ma poi ce n’è uno in fondo al giardino per i grandi quadri. (…) Davanti al cancello di casa, la gente è in attesa come di un pediatra di chiara fama. Perché tutti i bambini dai quaranta anni in

su vogliono avere qualche briciola a favore di loro stessi o di lontane congregazioni: molta gente si chiede se Renato farà quel lavoro che essi vorrebbero. (…) Qui il mese scorso, siamo stati insieme fino alle due di notte. Lui beveva il suo whisky, io il vino. L’indomani mattina, alle otto e mezza, eravamo in cucina a fare colazione, poi giù di corsa nello studio a veder nascere i disegni preparatori per i grandi quadri e acquarelli di omaggio a Picasso che Renato sta costruendo in questa estate 1973». A Induno Olona, nella grande villa del “Bidino” viveva Guido Piovene con la moglie Mimy, legati ai Guttuso tanto che quando Renato e Mimise tornavano da una visita a Picasso li invitavano a Velate per raccontare aneddoti e spettegolare un po’. Lo scrittore vicentino era affezionato cliente della pasticceria Ghezzi, da cui acquistava una speciale torta con pere e cioccolato, e della salumeria Valenzasca. A Daverio, in quella che oggi è villa Morotti, abitò un personaggio difficilmente catalogabile, campione di stranezze, genio e sregolatezza: Vittorio Beonio Brocchieri Brocchieri,, filosofo, giornalista, scrittore, viaggiatore e trasvolatore, poeta, pittore e occultista, nonché docente universitario e autore di dotti saggi su Nietzsche e Spengler. Nella grande villa settecentesca, Beonio Brocchieri coltivò le ultime passioni della vita, la scrittura e l’occultismo, tant’è che ancor oggi c’è chi giura di sedute spiritiche tenute nei saloni della ricca dimora. Poco distante, a Galliate Lombardo, vissero Mario Apollonio Apollonio,, storico del teatro, saggista e bibliofilo (la sua biblioteca è oggi di proprietà del comune di Galliate) che insegnò anche al liceo “Cairoli” di Varese, e in anni più recenti Ugo Tognazzi, proprietario di un villone, abitato per molto tempo anche dal padre, dove allestiva i suoi pranzi luculliani. Nella Casetta Rossa di Gavirate, Guido Morselli Morselli,, di origini bolognesi, montava l’inseparabile Zeffirino in lunghe cavalcate nei boschi e Liala, alla Cucciola di via Montello, zona residenziale esclusiva di Varese, inanellava un romanzo dopo l’altro. E l’elenco potrebbe continuare con la rivale di Liala, Maria Volpi Nannipieri, in arte Mura Mura,, vissuta a Gavirate, scrittrice di gusto raffinato e giornalista di costume, come Gianni Rodari,, insuperato inventore di favole e Annie Vivanti, Rodari Vivanti, sorella del medico condotto locale e musa del vecchio Carducci che l’accompagnava da Veniani a sbocconcellare tra un verso e l’altro qualche “Brutto e Buono”.

From Nobel Laureates for medicine to Tognazzi, everyone is drawn to “Varese Living” «In order to mark the National Holiday, an event promoted by an association of young people from Varese entitled "Voluntas", which was constituted for the purpose of overseeing the bronze casting of the national monument to the Hunters of the Alps, the tenor Francesco Tamagno assumed the role of artistic director for the Grande Mattinata Musicale (the "Great Musical Morning"). The event saw the participation of various noteworthy performers, including: Augusta Cruz (soprano), Florence Monteith (soprano), Vittorio Arimondi (bass), Giovanni Bianchi (baritone), and Francesco Tamagno himself (tenor)». The words of Pompeo Cambiasi, historian for La Scala, take us back to the lavish concert held at the Teatro Sociale in Varese on September 20th 1895 featuring the famous tenor Tamagno, who was at peak of his career at the time (having taken on the role of Verdi's first "Othello" in 1887). Tamagno, in fact, had decided to make our city his home, at the splendid Villa Albuzzi Del Pero in Giubiano, which he purchased in 1885 and renamed in honour of his daughter, Margherita. The villa was later furnished with his splendid collections, including the moths collection, which is now preserved in the halls of the villa Mirabello civic museums, as well as various splendid paintings, including a magnificent canvass by Nicolas Poussin. As fellow Piedmont native Edmondo De Amicis recalls in his work entitled Nuovi ritratti letterari e artistici ("New literary and artistic portraits"), Tamagno was a friendly and generous man who loved gardening and taxidermy, and practised his singing beneath the bridge over the Dora river, with his feet in the gravel. In the morning, the famous tenor would often head down to Piazza Porcari in a horse-drawn carriage to buy the newspaper from Marco Pontiggia, and would then pass by the Teatro Sociale to impart his latest instruction for the evenings' musical events. He was extremely fond of his daughter, Margherita, who is said to have been born from a relationship that the tenor had with a lady from the House of Savoy. The first ten copies of Tamagno's albums, in fact, were sent as gifts to the Royal House itself. He is perhaps the most illustrious of the numerous great artistic personalities who have decided to relocate to the Varese area over the years, attracted by the serenity and beauty of the landscape, as well as by its proximity to Milan. High-society gatherings, in fact, were often held in the large villas and hotels on the shores of

circles, which included some of the greatest names in post-war Italian poetry and literature.

Not far from the area in which Tamagno had settled lies the village of Barasso, which often hosted yet to another famous personality from the international music scene, editor Giulio Ricordi, Ricordi, who regularly left Milan to visit his daughter Ginetta (Giuseppe Verdi's favourite). Ginetta, in fact, had married the nobleman Luigi Origoni, who owned a splendid villa along the road to Comerio. While staying in Barasso, Giulio Ricordi loved to paint watercolour landscapes of the countryside, and amiably interacted with the locals, often telling witty little anecdotes about the music scene in Milan.

In more recent and, unfortunately, less carefree times than those of the Belle Ă&#x2030;poque, when Varese was considered to be one of Europe's most renowned holiday resort areas, numerous intellectuals came to these parts in order to escape from fascism and the destruction of the war in general. These included the likes of Elio Vittorini, Vittorini, who stayed at the Settima Capella of Sacro Monte in the villa of Ginetta Varisco (who later became his second wife) and provided accommodations to the partisan couriers. Not to mention Giovanni Raboni Raboni,, who was a youth at Sant'Ambrogio during the war and escaped from Pontiggia to purchase the literary and poetical works of Guido Piovene Piovene,, Massimo Bontempelli, Vittorio Sereni and Carlo Betocchi, and even Renato Guttuso Guttuso,, who was inspired by the serenity of the Velate area. In the words of Raboni: "I came every evening to meet my father, who took the train from Milan to Varese and arrived here by tram. From here, as if from atop a stage of some sort, we would watch the annual pilgrimage to Sacro Monte, with pilgrims festively passing by in the morning sunlight and returning every afternoon in the rain, always, as if by clockwork: because that's how the climate is in this area." The words of Giorgio Soavi, on the other hand, who in 1979 authored the book entitled Nei luoghi di Guttuso ("In the places of Guttuso"), provide us with a detailed description of a day in the

Varese also regularly hosted the first Italian physician to be awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine (in 1906), Camillo Golgi. Golgi. He was bound to our city, in fact, by his friendship with his mentor Giulio Bizzozero, the father of Italian histology, whose niece, Evangelina Aletti, he married and lived with for some time behind Piazza della Motta, in a house that has recently been demolished. This great researcher, who was born in Corteno in Val Camonica, is credited in part with the discovery of the so-called "black reaction", which allows nerve cells to be selectively stained. Many of the large entrepreneurial bourgeois families of Milan, like the Pirelli family in Casciago and the Zambeletti family in Velate, had already left their marks on the territory by the outset to the 20th century, building impressive villas and forming private cultural

life of the painter from Bagheria: "In Velate, like in Rome, he has a personal servant, Aldo. The villa has two studios, but there is yet another at the end of the garden for the large paintings. (...) In front of the gate to the house, people are waiting as if for a renowned paediatrician. Because all the children from forty years of age and up want to receive a few crumbs for their own benefit or even for more distant congregations: many people wonder if Renato will do the job that they are hoping for. (...) Last month, we stayed here together until two in the morning. He was drinking his whiskey, myself wine. At eight thirty the next morning, we made breakfast in the kitchen and then hurried down to the studio to observe the preparation of the initial drafts for the large canvasses and watercolours that Renato was painting to pay homage to Picasso that summer of 1973."

professor and author of acclaimed essays on Nietzsche and Spengler. Brocchieri cultivated some of the greatest passions of his later years, including writing and occultism, precisely in this magnificent eighteenth-century villa, to the point that some swear sĂŠances continue to be held in the richly adorned rooms of his residence to this very day. The nearby town of Galliate Lombardo was home to Mario Apollonio,, a theatre historian, writer and bibliophile (his library is Apollonio now owned by the town of Galliate), who even taught at the "Cairoli" high school in Varese. More recently, the same town was also home to Ugo Tognazzi, who owned a large villa in the area (inhabited at length by his father), which he often used as a venue for hosting his lavish luncheons.

Villa â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bidinoâ&#x20AC;? in Induno Olona was home to Guido Piovene and his wife Mimy, who were so close to the Guttuso family that when Renato and Mimise came back from a visit to Picasso, the couple invited them to Velate to hear about their trip and to chat for a while. The writer from Vicenza was a loyal customer of the Valenzasca delicatessen and the Ghezzi pastry shop, where he often purchased a special cake made with pears and chocolate.

At the Casetta Rossa in Gavirate, Guido Morselli (originally from Bologna) enjoyed taking his beloved horse, Zeffirino, on long rides through the woods, and wrote one novel after another at the Cucciola on Via Montello, an exclusive residential district of the Varese area.

And the list could go on with his rival Liala, as well as Maria Volpi Nannipieri, known as Mura Mura,, a refined writer and respected journalist who lived in Gavirate, not to mention Gianni Rodari, Rodari, the famed writer of fables, and Annie Vivanti, Vivanti, sister of the local medical officer and muse of the old Carducci, who accompanied her to the Veniani pastry shop to enjoy a few "Brutti e Buoni" between one verse and the next.

Il giardino come cardine del “vivere bene” di Fabio Minazzi *

Tutto ciò che è noto non per questo è evidente. L’apparente paradosso di questa affermazione si scioglie tenendo presente come ciò che è noto, proprio per il fatto di essere sotto il naso e gli occhi di tutti, non necessariamente è poi effettivamente conosciuto. Il passaggio da ciò che è noto all’evidenza implica, infatti, la capacità di saper dimostrare come evidente ciò che appare come noto. In altri termini l’evidenza implica la capacità di conoscere le ragioni che rendono evidente ciò che fino a quel momento era semplicemente noto. Lo sguardo dal Sacro Monte Questo aspetto concernente la conoscenza può essere richiamato anche per comprendere il paradosso della nostra “città giardino”. La nostra è una “città giardino” nella quale, tuttavia, la stragrande maggioranza dei nostri concittadini sembra non possedere alcuna effettiva conoscenza di questa molteplicità di giardini. O, meglio ancora, i giardini presenti a Varese sono a tutti ben noti, ma pochi sembrano poi conoscerne la loro evidenza, ovvero pochi ne sanno spiegare la genesi, la storia e anche la loro attuale potenzialità. Insomma, in una parola, non li conoscono affatto. Certamente basterebbe andare una sola volta al Sacro Monte e guardare dall’alto la nostra piccola città per rendersi conto di come quest’ultima viva e si sviluppi in mezzo al verde, con gli edifici intrecciati e quasi abbracciati dalle piante. Come giustamente sempre sottolinea un botanico e giardiniere varesino di vaglia come Daniele Zanzi, se si guarda Varese dall’alto è proprio il colore verde che predomina e si impone in tutto il suo rilievo. Tuttavia, proprio questo fatto ben noto, non diviene poi patrimonio conoscitivo per la stragrande maggioranza dei varesini che convivono quindi con questo verde senza rendersi ben conto di cosa possa mai significare vivere e lavorare in una “città giardino” e ne trascurano, di conseguenza, tutte le potenzialità intrinseche. Quel “verde” come patrimonio collettivo Eppure, basterebbe passare da una mera visione cromatica di questo verde alla sua conoscenza analitica e storica per rendersi subito conto che il “verde” di Varese costituisce un patrimonio per tutta la collettività e una risorsa veramente

straordinaria. Un patrimonio, a partire dal quale bisognerebbe saper ripensare, positivamente, costruttivamente e anche innovativamente, tutta la vita e il lavoro che si svolge a Varese. Il che andrebbe affermato non solo per chi si occupa direttamente di giardini, di strutture urbane, di piani regolatori et similia, ma dovrebbe coinvolgere tutti i settori di attività e di vita degli stessi varesini, in ogni ambito e settore. In questa prospettiva andrebbe insomma operata un’autentica rivoluzione culturale, sociale e civile, partendo proprio dal verde dei giardini varesini. E, di conseguenza, andrebbero sviluppati innovativi progetti di vita e di sviluppo sociale e civile, in grado di valorizzare e tutelare questo patrimonio, trasformandolo in una risorsa fondamentale per la vita stessa della città e di chi, appunto, vive e lavora a Varese. Ma per far questo - onde comprendere come il giardino possa trasformarsi in un elemento strategico decisivo per lo sviluppo, il radicamento e la diffusione di una pratica sociale del “vivere bene” - occorrerebbe cambiare, ab imis fundamentis, quest’approccio culturale. Giovani e ritmo della natura Un’operazione certamente non facile e agevole, che, tuttavia, dovrebbe essere senz’altro inaugurata prendendo le mosse anche e soprattutto dagli anni della formazione, aiutando i più giovani nostri concittadini a non cadere negli errori degli adulti, aiutandoli a conoscere questi giardini, e a goderne, quotidianamente, la vita, lavorando in sintonia con i ritmi della natura e il variare, continuo, delle piante, dei cespugli, dei fiori e dei prati. Bisognerebbe così far nascere una nuova sensibilità civile e storico-naturalistica in grado di aiutare tutti i concittadini a vedere nei giardini una risorsa del “vivere bene”, contro ogni forma di vandalismo perpetrato nei confronti del verde, dei campi, dei prati e dei boschi cittadini. Solo in questa prospettiva i moltissimi luoghi comuni incredibili che, anche a Varese, si sentono ripetere (gli alberi “sporcano”, le piante vanno tagliate ogni vent’anni, le piante sono pericolose...) potrebbero lasciare il posto per una ben diversa concezione della natura e della città, in cui il cittadino riuscirebbe a trovare un’armonia di vita che ora ci è preclusa. In fondo, non è forse vero che Socrate stesso amava discutere con i suoi allievi sotto l’ombra di un platano in riva a un fiume?

The garden as a cornerstone of the "good life" Just because something is known, this does not make it evident. The apparent paradox of this statement melts away if we consider that what is known is not necessarily and effectively understood simply because it is lies right under our noses or stands right before our eyes. The transition from that which is known to being evident, in fact, implies the ability to demonstrate how that which appears to be known is in fact evident. In other words, evidence implies the ability to understand the reasons for which that which was simply known up until that time has now been rendered evident. The view from Sacro Monte This aspect of knowledge can also be invoked in order to gain a better understanding of the paradox of our "garden city". Ours is a "garden city" in which the vast majority of our citizens nevertheless do not seem to have any real knowledge of this multiplicity of gardens. Or, better yet, the gardens present in Varese are well known to all, but few seem to have knowledge of their origins, their history, or even their current potential. In short, they know nothing about them at all. If you go up to Sacro Monte just once and look down at our little city, you'll realize how it is alive and continues to grow among the greenery... its buildings surrounded and nearly embraced by the trees. As the renowned botanist and Varese-native Daniele Zanzi rightly likes to emphasize, if you look at Varese from above, the entire landscape is dominated and pervaded by the colour green. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Varese's citizens are not entirely conscious of this otherwise well-known fact, and continue to live among this magnificent greenery without much awareness of what it means to live and work in a "garden city", even neglecting all the inherent potential of their surroundings.

Likewise, innovative social and civil development projects should be established in order to enhance and protect this heritage, thus transforming it into a vital resource for the life of the city itself and for those who actually live and work in the city. But in order to do so... in order to understand how gardens can become a strategic element crucial to the establishment, development and diffusion of a social culture based on the "good life"...a fundamental change must take place in our cultural approach. Young people and the rhythms of nature This process certainly won't be smooth nor easy, as it must be instilled through initiatives to be enacted at a scholastic level. We must help our younger citizens avoid committing the errors of their predecessors, teaching them about these gardens and showing them how their daily lives can be rendered so much more enjoyable by working in harmony with the rhythms of nature and the life cycles of the plants, shrubs, flowers and meadows themselves. We must therefore establish a new civic, historical and naturalistic awareness that will help all our citizens to see our gardens, our greenery, our fields our forests and our meadows as important aspects of the "good life" offered by our territory, which must be protected against every form of vandalism. This might be the only way to do away with the incredible clichĂŠs that even abound in the Varese area ("trees get everything dirty... they're dangerous...they need to be cut down every twenty years"), and to replace them with a different outlook on nature and the greenery in the city itself: perhaps even an outlook that will allow the citizens to rediscover a harmonious lifestyle that has hence been precluded. After all, didn't Socrates himself have the chance to enjoy discussions with his students beneath the shade of a sycamore tree on the banks of a river?

Our "greenery" as a collective heritage And yet, by merely switching from a chromatic view of this greenery to the historical and analytical knowledge of its existence, one immediately comes to the realization that the "greenery" of Varese constitutes a collective heritage and a truly extraordinary resource for the community itself. It's a heritage that we could use to positively, constructively and even innovatively rethink our ways of living and working in Varese. One which should be reaffirmed not only for those directly involved in the gardens, the urban structures and the zoning activities et similia, but also within every aspect of life and work in the Varese area itself. In short, what we need is a true cultural, social and civil revolution, starting precisely with the greenery of Varese's

Un approccio che valorizza lo splendido ambito naturale del Varesotto dolcemente mosso, verde e lussureggiante. E il senso più profondo dell’architettura di qualità di ogni epoca - non solo del Liberty - è la capacità, tutta moderna, di instaurare un dialogo profondo tra l’artificio e il naturale, senza ricorrere a forme storiche consolidate più o meno vernacolari o, peggio, di mimesi. Pioniere di questo genere di architettura è Mauro Rivolta, giovane architetto varesino che nel 2002 apre lo Studio Ecoarch. Da precursore intuì in tempi non sospetti quale sviluppo potesse avere da lì a poco l’architettura bioecologica, vera e propria rivoluzione culturale che in pochi anni ha rimesso in discussione modi di progettare e di operare ormai desueti e del tutto inadatti a rispondere alle nuove sfide del futuro, incentrate sul tema della sostenibilità del vivere contemporaneo. Un’architettura bioecologica che, lungi dall’essere destinata a un'élite, ha come obiettivo la salvaguardia del nostro ambiente, del nostro territorio, di noi stessi.

Emblematico di un approccio progettuale sensibile all’ambiente, al paesaggio e al contesto storico e architettonico, è il recupero di Casa FR nei dintorni di Varese: un piccolo edificio rurale da cui si gode della vista del Lago di Varese e del Monte Rosa, localizzato in un territorio incontaminato e ricco di vegetazione.

«Il progetto di ristrutturazione - spiega l’architetto Mauro Rivolta - prevede una diversa distribuzione interna, il recupero del sottotetto, l’aggiunta di un soppalco al piano primo e di una serra solare al piano terra. Internamente gli spazi si susseguono senza soluzione di continuità dall’ingresso al soggiorno fino alla cucina con la serra solare che si trasforma in veranda/sala da pranzo e che apre totalmente alla vista sul parco di proprietà. La scala, aerea e leggera, porta al piano primo dove di nuovo la fluidità si percepisce nella continua sorpresa di spazi che si concatenano. Tutto è aperto, tutto è connesso, tutto è libertà di movimento. Ogni ambiente ha viste sul parco e sul paesaggio attraverso aperture libere o incorniciate da filtri in pannelli di muratura ‘a traforo’. Questi ultimi, in parte nascosti da interventi precedenti, sono stati tutti ‘liberati’, finestrati e restituiti alla percezione dall’interno: la loro funzione originaria - permettere il passaggio dell’aria per l’asciugatura del fieno - viene sostituita da quella di controllo della luce e del calore e regala all’abitazione un’atmosfera umbratile e vibrante, ricca di richiami con il passato ma con un forte senso del vivere contemporaneo nel succedersi degli spazi».

Esempio di uno stretto rapporto con il paesaggio, è Casa CB, che da una posizione incantevole sul Verbano domina un territorio montano per lo più integro. Scorci sul lago impreziosiscono la vista donando a questa piccola abitazione una grande bellezza paesaggistica. «Vista da lontano - continua Rivolta - si erge come un solido bianco posto su un crinale collinare. Al piano terra la zona giorno, illuminata con grandi aperture a sud, si configura come open space in modo da percepire visivamente in continuità i vari ambienti interni (cucina, soggiorno, studio) ed esterni (deck in legno, giardino, paesaggio). Una scala in acciaio bianco e legno di rovere massello, conduce ai piani superiori dove si trovano le camere da letto, una loggia, una terrazza panoramica, un atelier di pittura, uno studio. La luce è il tema di questo progetto: dall’interno si percepisce un senso di “spazio scavato” mentre la luce diffusa invade serenamente l’interno manipolando lo spazio sempre bianco. La casa è bioecologica, prefabbricata in legno e ha ottenuto la Certificazione Minergie ECO per l’alta qualità, a conferma dell’attenzione dei progettisti per l’architettura bioecologica». Attenzione per la storia della città e rispetto del contesto: questo è il tema del progetto di recupero di una corte in totale stato di abbandono nella vecchia Biumo Inferiore, all’interno del tessuto consolidato di Varese. «Il progetto si pone come obiettivo la conservazione delle caratteristiche tipologiche dell’edificio e l’adeguamento alle esigenze abitative contemporanee, soprattutto in termini di qualità dei materiali -perlopiù naturali-, di risparmio energetico e di utilizzo di energia da fonti rinnovabili. Il restauro conservativo della muratura originaria, il rifacimento di solai e tetti con nuove strutture in legno, il forte isolamento di pareti perimetrali e tetti, l’impianto di riscaldamento geotermico (probabilmente il primo realizzato a Varese e forse l’unico nel suo centro storico), l’impianto elettrico domotico, i nuovi terrazzi in acciaio e legno, sono gli elementi che hanno fatto di questo intervento un progetto pilota per il restauro e il riuso di edifici storici». Adagiata sulle pendici montuose del Lago Maggiore, Casa BM si affaccia sul panorama delle Prealpi e, in lontananza, del lago. «Il progetto per rinnovare e ampliare la casa - conclude l'architetto Rivolta - stabilisce un dialogo sottile tra la tradizione vernacolare di cui è espressione e una concezione contemporanea dell’abitare. La scelta di ampliare il fabbricato mediante la sopraelevazione con struttura in legno di un piano, diviene occasione per rivisitare il volume esistente, ridefinirne i materiali, generando due appartamenti distinti. Al centro dei due alloggi, diventano elementi ordinatori dello spazio le grandi stufe in maiolica attorno alle quali si dispongono con rigore cartesiano gli ambienti del piano terra, mentre al piano primo spazi fluidi non completamente definiti si dilatano gli uni negli altri: le stufe assumono in sé il significato simbolico di legame e cuore delle due abitazioni».

The Varese of the future? A perfect balance of architecture and environmental sustainability In the residential profile of the Varese area, the future is already here, and environmental sustainability is the word of the day. This is a fundamental and ethical duty that we have towards the planet and its inhabitants. An approach that enhances the lushness and greenery of Varese's splendid natural environment. In fact, the more profound meaning behind the quality architecture of every era (not merely that of Art Nouveau), is the entirely-modern ability to establish a meaningful dialogue between the artificial and the natural, without resorting to more or less vernacular historical forms, or worse, imitations. The architecture must be capable of reading the history, the landscape and the environment, and connecting this cultural and environmental reading to the typical needs of our times, which are linked to the rationalization of energy needs and the sustainable use of building materials. One pioneer of this type of architecture is Mauro Rivolta: a young architect from Varese who, in 2002, founded Studio Ecoarch. As a pioneer, he soon came to realize how ecological architecture needed to evolve. This led to a veritable cultural revolution that, over the course of just a few years, began to challenge the obsolete design and working methods in use. These traditional methods, in fact, were entirely unfit to meet the new challenges of the future, in which the issue of the sustainability of modern living would play a central role. It's an eco-friendly form of architecture that, rather than being bound to an elitist mentality, is aimed at safeguarding our environment, our territory, and even ourselves. One symbol of a design approach that's sensitive to the environment, the landscape and the historical and architectural context, is the renovated Casa FR on the outskirts of Varese: a small rural building immersed the lush vegetation of an uncontaminated wilderness, which offers a splendid view of Lake Varese and Monte Rosa. «The renovation project», explains Architect Mauro Rivolta, «foresaw a different internal layout, the recovery of the attic area, the addition of a mezzanine on the first floor, and the addition of a solar greenhouse on the ground floor. Internally, the spaces are seamlessly interconnected, from the entrance to the living room and on to the kitchen, where the solar greenhouse is transformed into a conservatory/dining room, which opens up to afford a magnificent view of the gardens. The light and airy staircase brings the visitor up to the first floor, where the same fluidity of interconnecting spaces is perceived once again. Everything is open... everything is connected... everything has freedom of movement. Each room has views of the garden and the surrounding landscape, which are afforded through either free openings, or openings framed by perforated masonry filter panels. The latter, which had been partly hidden by previous renovation efforts, have now all been 'liberated', fitted with windows, and rendered visible from within: their original purpose (to allow the air to pass through in order to keep the hay dry) has now been replaced with that of controlling light and heat, while at the same time providing the house with the shadowy and vibrant atmosphere of a former era... and all with a strong sense of modern living thank to the continuity of the living areas». on the other hand, is Casa CB, which stands atop a largely uncontaminated mountainous area overlooking Lake Maggiore. This little house's scenic beauty, in fact, is rendered all the more breathtaking by the views that it offers of the shimmering lake below. When seen from a distance, it appears as a solid white spot standing on a hilltop ridge. The ground floor living area, which is illuminated by large south-facing windows, is laid out as an open space in order to allow for the various interior (kitchen, living room and study) and exterior areas (wooden deck, garden and landscape) to be viewed simultaneously in their entirety. A staircase in white steel and solid oak leads to the upper floor, which houses the bedrooms, a balcony, a rooftop terrace, a painting studio, and an study. The main theme of this project is light: the visitor gets a sense of the space having been "carved out", while the diffused light quietly pervades the interior, manipulating the white space itself. With its pre-fabricated timber frame, the house is entirely eco-friendly and was even awarded Minergie ECO Certification for its exceptional construction quality and the

attention to the environment demonstrated by its designers. Maximum awareness of the city's history and complete respect for the environment: these were the themes of the project for the restoration of an old abandoned palace in the historical district of Biumo Inferiore, which constitutes part of the consolidated urban fabric of Varese itself. The goal of the project was to preserve the building's characteristics, while adapting it to the needs of modern living, above all in terms of energy-savings, the use of renewable energy sources, and the quality of the construction materials (most of which were entirely natural). Some of the elements that have rendered this intervention a pioneering project for the restoration and reuse of historical buildings include the conservative restoration of the original masonry, the rebuilding of the floors and roofs with new wooden structures, the high degree of insulation in the outer walls and roof structures, the installation of a geothermal heating system (likely the first in the province of Varese and perhaps the only one of its kind in the historic centre), the electric home

automation system, and the new steel and wooden terraces. Perched atop the mountainous slopes surrounding Lake Maggiore, Casa BM overlooks the panorama of the Alpine foothills, with the lake shimmering in the distance. With the project to renovate and expand the house, the designers succeeded in establishing a subtle dialogue between the vernacular tradition that the structure itself represents, and a more contemporary concept of modern living. The decision to enlarge the house by including an additional storey with a wooden structure, became an opportunity to review the building's existing layout and to redefine the construction materials, ultimately resulting in the creation of two separate apartments. The living areas on the first floor are not so well-defined, with fluid spaces extending into one another. On the ground floor, on the other hand, the two residences are centrally organized around large earthenware stoves, with the rooms laid out in a rigorously Cartesian fashion: here, in fact, the stoves serve as the central and binding elements between the two apartments.
